The perfect patio – and hours of outdoor enjoyment – is within reach this and summer.

FILE PHOTO Lake Living

7 steps to

patio perfection

Petunias bloom brightly by the back door, temperatures are balmy, cookout season is on the horizon and you’re ready to give your outdoor living space a breath of fresh air. Great patios and decks enhance your enjoyment of summer, and boost home value, so it’s well worth the investment to update and upgrade your home’s exterior living space. Patio (or deck) perfection can be within your reach this season. Simply follow these seven steps to create an outdoor environment where you’ll be proud to entertain all summer long.

1. Update your patio furniture Whether your current patio set is worn out, you need more seating or are just in the mood for a whole new look, new patio furniture can change the way you feel about your outdoor environment – and how much time you spend there. Whether you want traditional wicker, durable metals or exotic woods like

Eucalyptus, you can find the right dining set, settee, chaise lounge, glider, ottoman, coffee table, rocker or swing among the 50,000 individual home decor items carried by every At Home store.

2. Replace cushions on your current set If your current patio furniture is in good shape but just in need of some freshening, it’s easy enough to give it new life with small tweaks like updated patio cushions. Cushions are the crowning touch to catch the eye on patio furniture, and you can find hundreds of patterns, shapes and styles of patio pillows and cushions at At Home.

3. Add a water feature One of the best ways to create your own oasis can be with a water feature. Easy to find and simple to set up accessories like a fountain can bring the harmony of water to your outdoor environment. For example, those with a waterfall feature immediately create a feeling of Zen and help drown out the noise of everyday life.

4. Make some shade

6. Lighten up

When you need a break from the sun, but aren’t ready to head indoors, shade can help you stay outside so you can enjoy the fresh air longer. You can add shade in many ways, from installing a retractable awning over the deck or patio to strategically planting trees or climbing vines on a trellis. And of course, the simplest way to add shade is to use patio umbrellas, which are available in a wide range of hues, patterns and styles.

When you’re having a great time outdoors, who wants to go inside just because it’s dark? Add some lighting to your outdoor living space to create ambiance and allow you to enjoy your patio long after the sun goes down. You can invest in hard-wired patio or deck lights, go eco-friendly and easy with solar lights, or choose from an array of battery-powered or candle-fired lanterns.

5. Heat up your grilling station What outdoor environment would be complete without a great grill? Accessories make grilling fun and easy, and ensure you’ll look and operate like a pro when whipping up summer fare. From grilling mitts to barbecue tool sets, burger and kabob grilling baskets, grill toppers and even taco shell baskets, you can outfit your grill station with everything you need for a great grilling experience.

7. Use decor to create a theme

Just as your home’s interior has a design theme, choosing a theme for your patio or deck can pull the look together. Whether your taste is Boho Chic, Tribal or Weekend Getaway, you can find decor items that underscore the theme. Wall decorations, outdoor rugs, decorative planters and flowerpots, wind chimes and statuary all work together to create a look you’ll love throughout the summer. Five innovations in homebuilding everyone is talking about HOMES & DESIGN

In the last 10 years, televisions have become flatter, video rental stores have nearly disappeared, and phones have become devices that are more like a computer than a phone. There’s good reason that when most people think about changes in technology, they tend to think about the digital world. After all, with the news full of reports of driverless cars, it’s easy to forget that some of the most important technological advancements are happening around us in ways we may not be aware of – namely – in our homes. Here are five of the most exciting innovations.

Sound-dampening drywall

Everyone wants to go home to some peace and quiet, but in a busy household with televisions, video games and music playing out of surround-sound systems, it can be hard to find quiet. Some look to noise canceling headphones or sound-muffling curtains, but engineers at CertainTeed Gypsum have discovered that something as simple as the

right drywall can do wonders in canceling out noise. Their SilentFX QuickCut noisereducing drywall puts a blanket over sound energy and significantly blocks the amount of sound carried through walls and ceilings.

A new lease on lumber

Cross-laminated timber is a material made by gluing together smaller pieces of timber to create large slabs that serve as an alternative to steel and concrete. As strong as steel, and in many ways even more fireproof, CLT allows for contractors to put up incredibly durable buildings incredibly fast. With computer-aided design programs, architects can design a building and send the exact specifications to robotic routers that cut the exact dimensions for each piece so that the entire building can be assembled like a big piece of furniture.

Quartz – an engineering miracle

While granite countertops and marble bathtubs may be at the top of everyone’s list, the cost can be prohibitive. Quartz,

which is a name for stone that has been engineered by grinding quartz with resins, polymers and coloring, has emerged as a substitute that outperforms granite and marble, for a fraction of a price. Extremely durable and virtually maintenance free, modern engineered quartz comes in a variety of colors and patterns that mimic the erratic design prized in natural stone.

Air-quality control

People spend a lot of time and money ensuring their home has good airflow. However, most people aren’t aware of the role the right drywall can play in ensuring clean, breathable air. Common household products such as carpet, perfume, hairspray, candles, flooring and more actually give off formaldehyde that affects the quality of the air. As part of the new “smart” generation of drywall, AirRenew with M2Tech technology is a drywall that is not only moisture and mold resistant, but actively removes formaldehyde from the air and converts it into safe inert compounds, contributing to a healthier

July 2016

Page 5

home environment.

Bio concrete

Though it’s the world’s most common building material, concrete ages quickly. Changes in temperature, the shifting of the earth, weather and chemicals all contribute to the inevitable cracks and deterioration. Several years ago, scientists in the Netherlands developed a kind of concrete that can repair itself by integrating limestone-creating bacteria that “heal” cracks. This process is similar to the way bones heal themselves when broken. The result for homebuilders is stronger foundations, less seasonal repair and more overall value. While people may not line up outside a store to get these materials the way they do with the newest phone release, these technologies will have positive effects on people’s daily lives. So if you’re curious about what innovative drywall solutions are available today, visit CertainTeed. com/Silent-FX and CertainTeed.com/ CleanTheAir.

(BPT)

From drywall to windows to insulation, home building materials have developed in a way that might seem like something from a science fiction movie. But as more homeowners are getting accustomed to living with these comforts, they wonder how they ever did without them.

THE POWER OF

paddleboards AREA EMBRACES FAST-GROWING WATER ACTIVITY

By Christopher Bennett CORRESPONDENT

ombine the functional side of kayaking with the fun side or surfing and you arrive at paddleboarding. Water enthusiasts from Bermuda to Lake Tahoe and all the way to England are taking note of the world’s fastest-growing aquatic recreation activity. Southeast Wisconsin is doing its part to help drive paddleboarding’s popularity. Paddleboards are available for rent on most area lakes, including Geneva Lake and each of the Twin Lakes in Western Kenosha County. Leslie DiCarlo, owner of Leslie’s Kayak and Paddleboard Rental on Lake Elizabeth in Twin Lakes, did not know how to paddleboard when she started her business. Leslie’s business is next to Sand Bar and Island Grill. DiCarlo is in her second season, and opened this year on May 1. Business is slow, so far – paddleboard rentals are dependent on the weather. “Towards the end of August, I was turning people away,” DiCarlo said of her first season in business. “The more people that are noticed on the lake, the more people get that same mentality.” The more people saw others paddleboarding the more the activity grew, DiCarlo said. According to various published reports paddleboarding’s origins can be traced to Hawaii, where the activity is known as “Hoe he’e nalu.” The Polynesians used stand-up paddleboards to travel between islands. The activity grew in popularity in the 1960s and

again in the 2000s, when windsurfers on Maui took-up the sport. The trend spread to California and eventually the rest of the country and the world. In 2010 the Stand Up Paddle Industry Association formed in Dana Point, Calif., which is centrally located between Los Angeles and San Diego. SUPIA markets itself as the trade organization of all stand-up paddle businesses.

Yoga is among the forms of exercise and recreation that are accommodated by paddleboards.

A versatile option

Michelle Peterson first tried paddleboarding in 2010, and now manages Fontana Paddle Company on Geneva Lake. Peterson said she rents-out eight paddleboards for every two kayaks when the weather is warm and the lake active. “For the person who just wants to be able to get out on the lake, it’s not nearly as intimidating,” Peterson said of paddleboarding. “They’re more versatile than a kayak.” Peterson said the paddleboard offers a differing point of view of the water, a point on which DiCarlo agrees. “It’s basically just a piece of material between you and the water,” DiCarlo said. “You’re really just out there on the water. It’s cool to see the water and be on the lake like that.” DiCarlo often paddleboards on Lake Elizabeth with Gizmo, her Chinese Crested dog. Peterson said she often sees people practicing yoga on paddleboards in the middle of Lake Geneva, and said there are paddleboards designed for activities such as fishing, cross fit, yoga and more. Boards designed for physical activity are wider, Peterson said. An average board is 28 to 32 inches wide. Boards designed for

SUBMITTED PHOTO Lake Living

activities like exercise or fishing can be up to 36 inches wide. Racing boards – of course people race paddleboards – are typically 24 to 26 inches wide.

Technique matters

Calm days with light winds are best for those who want to become acquainted with using a paddleboard, according to local rental companies.

SUBMITTED PHOTO Lake Living

Using a paddleboard is not as easy as hopping on and going about your merry way. Eventually it can be, but technique is important, especially for beginners. “When I look on the lake and see people paddling by – I see it all the time – half the people I see out there are holding the paddle backwards,” Peterson said. Peterson said if the balls of your feet hurt after paddleboarding, you used improper technique. “The biggest mistake they make is they paddle too far behind,” Peterson said. “You stroke from the front nose of the board to the heel of your foot.” Stroking past the heel of your foot leads to pain in your feet. Peterson said the pain is because you instinctively dig-in with your feet to retain your balance. “On an easy day, take it out and paddle,” Peterson said. “If there’s no wind, you’re going to go forward. The added effort comes into play when conditions are not ideal, and you have winds and waves.” Peterson said she will not rent paddleboards without the user knowing what they are doing, and her staff will offer

instruction to those new to the activity. DiCarlo’s launch is near a nature preserve on Lake Elizabeth. The site affords a spot for peace and quiet on what is normally a busy lake, but also offers beginners a chance to get familiar with the board and paddling in a safe space, which DiCarlo encourages.

Precaution reigns

Safety must remain a concern when paddleboarding. You’re still on the water, and it is never wise to mess with the lake. Use a personal flotation device. Peterson said a light and a whistle are also good ideas. Peterson also said to only paddleboard when there is a combined temperature of 120 degrees between the air and water. The cost of paddleboarding is not prohibitive. DiCarlo rents paddleboards at $15 per hour, or four hours for $50. Peterson rents paddleboards for two hours at a cost of $40. DiCarlo said she made extensive use of Groupon last summer, and Peterson offers pass packages and other ways to lower the cost even further. Each business is on the web. DiCarlo is at lesliedicarlo.wix.com/leslieskayak and Peterson is at www.fontanapaddleco.com. Each business also maintains an active presence on Facebook. Search for “Fontana Paddle Company” for Peterson and “Leslie’s Kayak & Paddle” for DiCarlo.

TIPS TO PUT

on your table

Appetizers and mains

There are many easy ways to put summer on your table in finger foods, salads and even meat and poultry dishes. Light appetizer ideas include fruit and cheese crostini. All you need is creativity and French bread, goat cheese and your favorite summer fruit.

You can add strawberries and a balsamic reduction or honey and raspberries. And consider a twist on prosciutto and melon by wrapping fresh peach slices instead. Or toss watermelon into a salad of tomato, mozzarella cheese and basil, topped with olive oil and salt and pepper. Your favorite main courses can take on different flavor nuances with the season. Consider grilling steak with warm peaches and onions as a topper. Or poach fresh plums and serve with turkey breast or grilled chicken, bringing a tartness to poultry not unlike that from cranberry sauce.

Summer cocktails

It’s no surprise that summer is when some of the world’s best food and beverage companies introduce new fruit-focused offerings. For instance, Alizé is debuting a new passion flavor to its portfolio: Alizé Peach. It is an infusion of ripe, luscious peaches

delicately blended with premium French vodka – just in time to be mixed into light warm-weather cocktails. Don’t just add fresh fruit as a garnish to summer cocktails; consider using fruit-imbued spirits instead of plain ones. Whether blended into margaritas, shaken in martinis, mixed into sangrias, or drizzled atop sparkling wine, fruit-infused vodkas, such as the new Alizé Peach or Alizé Passion with passion fruit, are well suited for summer entertaining. Alizé Passion comes in different flavors, blended with exotic passion fruit, fresh cherries, cranberries, and even a touch of ginger. Summer is the perfect time to live in color with fruit-infused cocktails – whether it’s a simple Bellini mixed with prosecco and Alizé Peach or a more complicated peach punch that blends the infused vodka with gin, elderflower liquor and honey.

Peach Mule 2 ounces Alizé Peach 1 ounce Vodka 1/2 ounce simple syrup 3/4 ounce lime juice Top off with ginger beer

For a summer feel, use a Collins glass rather than a mug (the traditional Mule vessel), and stir gently. Enjoy in the shade or with a gentle summer breeze.

Gardening is a peaceful activity that eases tension, reduces overall stress and promotes longevity. One long-term study found that daily gardening reduces the risk for both dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. With all of these benefits, there are ample reasons why people of all ages and lifestyles should start digging in the dirt. You don’t need a big yard or lots of room to enjoy a beautiful garden. With so many options for indoor and outdoor container gardening, there’s no limit on the number of gardens you can have. Container gardening is a great way to color up a small space, add depth and height to your yard or easily change up the look of your patio. No matter your skill level, enjoy the benefits of gardening with these container trends:

237750

Petunia tower A petunia tower is a great way to add an unexpected element to your container garden collection. A flower tower is easy to make and sun-loving Tidal Wave Petunias will bloom all season long on a patio, deck or pool area. You will need only three Tidal Wave plants. The Red Velour have great color and texture and make a strong statement. Plant them with good potting soil into a 10 to 12 inch wide plastic nursing pot. Place a three-foot metal tomato cage into the pot. The cage should

be as wide at the bottom as it is on the top. Now slip the entire plastic pot into a glazed pot that’s about one to four inches wider, and voila. Hanging baskets Hanging flower baskets bring your plants to eye-level, where everyone can enjoy their wonderful scents and sights. Add beauty to an otherwise dull porch, wall or rafters. Try planting succulents for a virtually care-free container garden. Petunias, calibrachoa and pansies also make wonderful additions to hanging baskets. Combination containers Who says your container garden can only have one plant? Get creative and play with different color and texture combinations of plants and flowers. You can make up your own mix or search online for combo recipes by other inspiring gardeners. Mix foliage with flowers and use a color scheme to build a balanced and beautiful container. Indoor container gardening Take your favorite hobby inside. Even if you have a small apartment, there’s no need to rule out house plants. Find the best place for each plant, depending on their light requirements. Don’t be afraid to experiment and try different locations until you find the best spot for your indoor containers. For sun-loving plants, just be sure to place them on a windowsill for maximum light exposure. With so many options and room for creativity, container gardening is a trend that’s here to stay. otherwise. “I canceled 17 trips two years ago,” he said. “I just called people up and said don’t come, they’re not biting. Why waste your money.” Likewise, Schalz said in his opinion, there’s not enough walleye on the lake at this stage to justify specifically targeting walleye on fishing trips. However, fishing for bass and panfish, Schalz said he can just about guarantee when he takes a group out he’ll be cleaning 40 to 60 panfish, or even more, each day. “You just tell people the truth and I get about 98 percent return business because of that,” he said. Schalz also noted Geneva Lake is an incredibly clean lake, spring fed with a very minimal watershed, making it a great lake for eating from. Looking towards the future, Schalz said he’s been working with Walleyes for Tomorrow, a non-profit organization with a mission to stock walleyes and improve Walleye spawning grounds in Wisconsin lakes. On Geneva Lake specifically, the group works with the DNR and holds fundraisers and operates a portable walleye hatchery, essentially breeding walleye from the lake. With rock bass, perch and bluegill eating the eggs in the natural habitat, Schalz said having the hatchery has proved to be a success for the lake, increasing the walleye population little by little. While Schalz said only a half of one percent of what they put in will survive, when you look at the numbers, out of about 10 million eggs, that’s actually a lot of fish.

Running it as a business For Schalz’s business, he said the overhead costs are fairly minimal, including essentially the cost of gas, bait, insurance and wear are tear on his boat. When he went full time, Yar-Craft gave him a bit of sponsorship to help him out, something he’s been grateful for. With fees for fishing guide services varying, even on the lake, Schalz said he tries to keep his in the mid-range and

attempts to offer a little bit of a break to families to get them out on the water and keep them fishing for years to come. Schalz said he typically tries to stray away from weekends, reserving those for regular only customers only, simply because of the sheer number of people on the lake and the safety concerns it can pose to him and his anglers. “I’ve had water skiers splash water in my boat,” he said. “I’ve been fishing the lake for 40 years and I’ve personally seen two people get killed out here. “You get that many people out on the lake and it’s dangerous.” Speaking of safety, Schalz carries an insurance plan on his business, something he has in place if something were to happen. However, he does everything in his power to prevent something from ever occurring. “I’ve never had an incident and I hope I never will,” he said. Schalz said he doesn’t even want his clients attempting to help with docking the boat and showing up intoxicated for a fishing trip is something that will cause him to end a fishing trip real quickly. “I can’t afford to have something happen, it’s not worth it,” he said. Schalz said it’s OK for anglers to bring a couple beers with them along on the trip, but he doesn’t want clients drinking in excess on his boat. Fishing with Chuck Schalz said the past couple of years have not been great for northern pike fishing with the water being too cold. And in running an honest business, Schalz said he’s not going to tell you

long, Schalz said it only makes up about 15 percent of his clients. In the off months, Schalz spends his time at fishing shows, attracting more clients, even though he already has a pretty busy schedule. “If you coast, you only coast downhill,” he said. “Somebody moves away, somebody dies or for some reason there’s a personality conflict, some people just don’t get along.” Chuck’s Fishing Guide Service is open the first Saturday in May through September, going after all feasible species on the lake. Schalz charges $225 for five hours on the lake for one to two anglers and $25 and hour for additional time. For additional anglers older than 12, Schalz charges an additional $75 each, with the first additional person younger than 12 only costing $40. Once the fishing has ended, Schalz said he drops anglers off, allowing them to go and grab a bite to eat or explore Williams Bay while he heads back to his nearby home to clean their fish and the boat, ensuring when customers are done for the day their fish are cleaned, wrapped up and ready to go. “They can go home and have a

10 points to consider before buying a walk mower Page 14

HOMES & DESIGN

Warm weather means it’s time to get back in the routine of mowing the grass every week. While it’s difficult to find the motivation to do chores when you’d rather bask in the sun, the right walk mower will make the job easier and faster. Before making a purchase, consider these top 10 points to ensure you get the right walk mower for your needs. The result: a beautiful yard and more time to enjoy the glories of the season.

1. Yard size – The size of your yard

may dictate the size of mower you need. A walk mower is adequate for most urban and suburban yards. When shopping, research deck size to determine how much grass is cut in each swipe. The Toro TimeMaster has a large 30-inch deck so you get more mowing done in less time.

2. Terrain – The types of terrain in your yard may require a special type of walk mower. Rough terrain or steep hills will benefit from a specialty mower like the Lawn-Boy All-Wheel Drive mower. This mower has added traction in hilly and sloped mowing conditions, plus it doesn’t require oil changes. FILE PHOTO Lake Living

When purchasing a new walking lawnmower, make sure to get the model that meets your needs and ability.

3. Self-propelled vs. push – A selfpropelled mower will move when the feature is activated by the user. A push mower moves fully by the power

of the person pushing it. Much of the decision relies on personal preference, but if you have a large yard or many hills, a self-propelled may be beneficial.

4. Space/storage issues – How much

room do you have to store the mower? For tight storage spaces, consider compact mowers. The Toro Recycler with SmartStow offers power without the big storage footprint. Because it can be stored upright, it takes up to 70 percent less space than a conventional 22-inch mower with the handle in standard position.

5. Maintenance – You need a mower to maintain your yard, but the fact is you need to maintain your mower as well. Ask about maintenance requirements before making a purchase. Some mowers are designed to require less upkeep, such as having an engine that doesn’t require oil changes.

Different models will have different procedures for starting the engine. Most people are familiar with the traditional pull start. Another option that some models have is an electric push button. Choose based on your preference, budget and physical ability.

10. Options – Finally, look at what options the mower offers. From the range of cut height to options that switch from mulching to bagging, different models will have different features that may appeal to your individual needs.

8. Fuel – Understand what fuel is required before making a walk mower purchase. Using the incorrect fuel will damage the engine and void the warranty. A four-stroke engine typically requires unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 87 or higher. Gasoline with up to 10 percent ethanol (gasohol) by volume is acceptable. Gasoline with 15 percent ethanol by volume is not approved for use. 9. Electric start vs. pull start –

6. Your personal physical condition – Be honest about your current physical condition when researching walk mowers. Some models are created to better suit people with physical needs rather than others who are more physically fit. Ask questions and find the right one for you so you can mow confidently. 7. Accessories – Some walk

mowers will come with a selection of accessories. Research what is included and what will require an additional investment. Things like a striping kit and bagger may be included.
