Cooking and eating outside are among the great joys of warm weather, and kitchens are a popular improvement to outdoor living areas. There are many options for creating an outdoor kitchen from building a simple frame and sliding a standard gas grill into it, to a more elaborate stone installation complete with an oven and multiple burners. Save money by using online guides and renting tools to build your own backyard kitchen.
Over-the-top

outdoor improvements for DIYers A beautiful backyard has become a suburban status symbol much like a brand-new car in the driveway. Upgrading your outdoor space is not only uplifting, it’s practical, too. A great backyard expands your living space, enhances your enjoyment of your home and can boost resale value. Anyone can plant some flowers or put in a patio. To truly take outdoor spaces to the next level, though, look to projects that offer a big “wow factor.” Many are well within the capabilities of most do-it-yourselfers. You can find detailed instructions online, and all the tools you’ll need are at your local American Rental Association member rental store. Here are five warm-weather projects to turn your backyard into an enticing oasis this spring and summer:
FILE PHOTO Lake Living
What’s more relaxing than napping in the shade with a soft breeze as your blanket? Constructing a suspended bed swing as an easy weekend project that requires the rental of only a few simple tools. When you’re done, you’ll enjoy testing the fruits of your labor with an afternoon nap.
Create a fire pit area Metal fire pits and chimineas are available in home improvement stores, but to create a truly memorable outdoor experience, consider building your own fire pit. Rather than simply being another portable accessory cluttering up your outdoor space, a built-in fire pit becomes an ambience-boosting design element in your yard. To create a fire pit, you’ll need a good-sized circle of level ground in your yard, tools for digging, stones or bricks for construction, and implements for hauling sand, stone and bricks.
Plant a vertical garden Gardening is a popular summer pastime, one that can fill your yard and home with beautiful blooms, lush greenery and nutritious, low-cost produce. If you don’t have a great deal of room for a spacious garden plot, or if you want a garden that’s more visually striking than raised beds or containers, consider a vertical garden. Virtually any unadorned outdoor wall can accommodate a vertical garden. Depending on how you choose to affix plants and containers to the wall, you may need to rent nail guns or construction-grade staple guns. Set up superior seating Anyone can buy some patio furniture and put it on the deck, but built-in seating takes outdoor relaxation to the next level. Adding built-in seating can be as simple as building a wooden frame along a deck railing and adding plush cushions, or as elaborate as creating a sunken pit from field stone and patio pavers. Look online for inspiration and ideas that will fit with your space and design tastes. Whatever project you decide to tackle, renting the tools you’ll need is a cost-effective way to get the job done without overspending. Plus, when you’re done with the tools you won’t have to worry about finding somewhere to store them. To find a local rental store, visit www.rentalhq.com. (BPT)

What’s in your pool water?
You hit the diving board, get some air and tuck up for the biggest cannonball of the season. It feels good to be back in the pool again. Or so you think. Because the truth is, if you knew what was in the pool water you were jumping into, maybe you wouldn’t be jumping in the first place.

Backyard swimming pools make for an enjoyable place to congregate when the weather is hot. Do the proper research and ask the necessary questions to make a pool installation go more smoothly.
Spring swimming pool installation tips
Now that the weather is warming up, many homeowners’ thoughts are drifting toward relaxing days spent soaking up some sun by the pool. Early spring is a great time to install a pool so the family has a go-to hangout by the time summer arrives. Installing a pool is a large financial investment, and homeowners considering adding a pool should not take that decision lightly. When attempting to determine if a pool is for them, homeowners may want to ask themselves the following questions. Is my yard suitable for a pool? Some yards may not be large enough for pools, while others may not meet the zoning requirements set forth by the town. Still other yards may have soil that’s not suitable for putting in an inground pool, or may have a high water table that can delay construction. What is the average weather? Will a pool be enjoyed enough to warrant the cost? Homeowners who live in areas that get many hot days will likely get their money’s worth. But if the climate suggests that a pool will sit unused more often than not, perhaps a pool is not the best investment. Can we afford it? A pool can range from a few hundred dollars for inflatable or self-installing models to many thousands for elaborate inground designs. You budget will dictate which type of pool you can afford to install. How will we use the pool? Decide if you’re putting in a pool for the kids, to entertain the family or to make an architectural statement in the yard. Having a clear sense of purpose will help to guide the decision-making process. Who will maintain the pool? Many homeowners tackle the day-to-day maintenance required to keep their pools clean and safe. Others hire pool
cleaners to maintain their pools and ensure the water is properly balanced. Maintenance can cost additional money, so consider this potential cost when determining if a pool is for you. Are there any safety concerns? Parents of young children may be hesitant to install a pool, but today’s pool installation codes consider many of the potential hazards of a pool and attempt to eliminate them. Fences surrounding inground pools with self-locking gates, as well as locking ladders for above-ground pools can eliminate accidental falls into unattended pools. Your municipality will have a list of requirements for pools, so peruse the list prior to making your final decision. If the decision has been made to move ahead with a pool, it can be helpful to understand a few facts about the process of installing a pool. Always work with a pool-installation company that has earned positive reviews and has a stellar record of service. While this does not guarantee that the job will not encounter problems, contractors with glowing reviews tend to have earned those reviews. Read reviews from unbiased, online customers as well as any friends or family members who have used a particular pool company. It’s important that homeowners recognize that the installation of a pool may require some heavy machinery, which can damage lawns. Fence panels may have to be removed to let in excavation equipment. Sand, soil backfill or gravel may be needed to level out a landscape, and things may get noisy and messy when the installation hits full swing. Some homeowners can handle installing above-ground pools on their own, but less DIY-savvy homeowners may want to leave the installation to a professional installer to ensure the job is done right. Always secure the proper permits and inspections prior to using the pool. This not only ensures the safety of swimmers, but also guarantees the pool is legal. (METRO CREATIVE)
A crowded pool Swimmers and pool owners alike know pools are full of chemicals such as chlorine, but pools that lack proper maintenance allow for plenty of unwelcome guests as well. Pathogens, bacteria, algae and other invaders can all call a pool’s water home without proper cleaning. “The importance of pH and alkalinity levels are often overlooked,” says Matt Giovanisci of Swim University. “The balance of the water is one of the most important things.” Giovanisci says that while maintaining proper pH and alkalinity levels are a key first step that will allow the chlorine to do its job, many pool owners just aren’t too excited about the maintenance side of pool ownership, increasing the threat of pathogens contaminating the water. Today’s technology makes it easy Pool ownership today is vastly advanced from just 10 years ago, offering pool owners easy solutions to cleaner pools, without relying solely on chemicals. Older methods of pool cleaning include the use of pole vacuums and either suction or pressure side cleaners. Today however, the market is decidedly shifting toward robotic pool cleaners, and Giovanisci says it’s easy to see why.

Aquabot robotic pool cleaners filter the water as they clean, reducing the need to rely solely on chemical solutions. They also have power-washing jets to power wash surfaces and help vacuum small particles like silt and sand.
TOP SUMMER 10 TIPS LIKE A LAKE LIVING
for smooth boating safety
When hitting open waters this season, safety should be a top priority for passengers AND the boat itself! Before setting sail, check out these 10 helpful tips to keep everyone onboard and your boat safe. 1. Use and maintain the right safety equipment required by law. Have a U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket for each person onboard and one approved throwable device for any boat 16 feet and longer. Keep a fire extinguisher handy for unexpected flames. 2. If you are doing any water sports or out-ofboat activities, make sure someone is in the boat watching everyone in the water and keeping an eye out for any issues. 3. Make sure your boat lights are in working order and always test them before the boat leaves the dock. Carry extra batteries and flashlights. 4. Create an emergency supply kit and keep it handy. Items to include: cell phone, maps, flares, shelf-stable snacks and a first aid kit. Store in a floating pouch in an easily accessible area of the boat. 5. Keep a close eye on the weather and bring a radio. If bad weather is approaching, get off the water early to avoid possible disaster. 6. Before heading out, tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return. 7. Apply protective sunscreen on exposed AND covered skin. Renew it every couple of hours and after going in the water. 8. Keep your boat shipshape and clean and protect its surfaces with products developed specifically for boat maintenance. Use 303 Citrus Cleaner & Degreaser to safely clean vinyl, leather and plastic. It also offers UVA/ UVB blockers for protection from the sun. 9. To restore power, maximize fuel economy, prevent ethanol damage, clean the fuel system, and for better water removal from marine engines, many boaters turn to STA-BIL 360° Marine. 10. Remember to not pollute, as debris could affect wildlife and other boaters. For more advice, go to www.goldeagle.com. (NAPS)

With the plethora of lakes in the area, boating is a popular summertime activity. It’s not necessary to own a boat to enjoy the lakes; there are rental sites available. If new to the boating world, however, it’s a good idea to take a Department of Natural Resources approved boating course.
Four easy ways to go boating Perusing social media or flipping through a magazine, it’s common to see famous faces like George Clooney or Taylor Swift cruising around on fancy boats, but guess what? You don’t have to be rich and famous to enjoy boating. Get your feet wet this summer just like the stars without breaking the bank. The National Marine Manufacturers Association reports 71 percent of boat owners have an annual household income of less than $100,000. That means boating is more accessible than you may think – just ask the 87.3 million Americans who go boating each year. “It’s a common misperception that boating is mega yachting, but that’s not the case – 95 percent of the 12 million boats on the water in the U.S. are under 26 feet in length,” says Carl Blackwell, president of Discover Boating. “Whether it’s fishing, wakesurfing, sailing, riding personal watercraft or cruising – there are ways for everyone to go boating on a budget and make memories out on the water.” Whether you’re planning a vacation or looking for a new hobby close to home, Discover Boating has insider tips for getting on the water: Test the waters Rental options can be found on most waterways and provide access to a variety of boat types on an hourly or daily basis. Rental outfitters provide a tutorial on how to operate the boat, safety instructions and suggestions on where to go. New to market are peer-to-peer rentals that go directly through boat owners and can include captains for hire and insurance.
Proper boat safety is the smart way to start your water adventure. Be sure to have a U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket for each person onboard and one approved throwable device for any boat 16 feet and longer.

It’s time to rev up for the summer entertaining season. With simple planning tips and fun décor ideas, you can play host to the season’s most delicious party.
Wow your guests’ taste buds
at summer dinner parties Warm weather begs for an outdoor dinner party with good friends, delicious food, and plenty of wine. It’s all in the details to elevate a typical get together into a summer celebration feast with friends. Here are some easy and tasteful tips to take your next summer barbecue or dinner gathering to the next level without making you, or the wine, sweat.
DON’T RUN DRY
Acquiring the right amount of wine for your party can be challenging and you don’t want to run out before the party is over. To help determine the proper wine quantity needed, Maison Louis Jadot, specializing in quality French wines from Burgundy, offers a free online party calculator to ease the planning process: www.LoveJadot.com/mobile/partycalculator.php. Your guests will thank you for the tip in planning their own parties.
MENU PLANNING
A menu is not truly complete if not accompanied by complementary wines, so make sure your food and wine pairings work well together. For choosing wines that pair well with a variety of summer dishes and promise to become crowd favorites, stick with the classics. For example, Maison Louis Jadot’s Mâcon-Villages is a light and crisp Chardonnay, perfect for summer salads, lobster rolls, grilled fish, or shrimp. For red wine loving guests, consider Maison Louis Jadot’s BeaujolaisVillages, which is a lighter style red, ideal for warm weather. Easy drinking and versatile with many different foods, your guests will have fun discovering this old world classic wine made from the Gamay varietal. Also don’t forget to have plenty of
hearty bread on hand between courses and on your appetizer table to clean guests’ palates and prepare taste buds for the next dish and wine pairing.
DÉCOR
Create décor that wine lovers will take notice of, such as homemade place cards made of wine corks. They are simple and easy to make: save corks from old wine bottles, make a thin slit with a small knife on one side of each cork, and slide the place card inside. To encourage guests to try your delicious food and wine pairings, prepare a chalkboard that lists out the night’s menu and guides guests to each combination. Or, help guests explore interesting pairings on their own with handwritten placards in front of each dish that includes flavor descriptions. (STATEPOINT)
Tips for enjoying different types of wines
There’s a wide world of wine out there to discover. If you find yourself reaching for the same few varietals time and again, consider expanding your range with different types that you might not necessarily think to pair with your meals. For example, Port, which is thought by many to be just an afterdinner or dessert wine, is versatile in itself and can be used before, during or after meals. “Port is not just a wine to enjoy after dinner,” says David Guimaraens, head winemaker for Taylor Fladgate, Fonseca and Croft. “The range of styles means you can enjoy Port as an aperitif, with dessert, or at a party.” Port is one of the world’s great classical wines and is made in Portugal’s Douro Valley since the late 1600s. Portugal is the birthplace of true Port, which is defined as a fortified wine made from Portuguese grape varieties and the addition of neutral grape spirit. Depending on how it is aged, Port comes in a spectrum of styles, each of which can beautifully complement meals or special occasions, and can be enjoyed year-round. The most popular styles of Port are Ruby, Tawny and White. Here are a few tips and recommendations for getting the best use of them. • Ruby Port such as Fonseca BIN 27, made by one of the most revered

How to clean your grill during summer party season Grilling season has arrived, and amateur grill masters everywhere are gearing up for another summer of backyard barbecues and family dinners outside under the summer sun. But once you fire up that grill and cook your first hot dog of the season, your work is not quite done. Cleaning the grill after you have eaten makes it easier to prolong the life of your grill and ensure the foods you eat are safe to consume. Turn the grill off Unless you own a charcoal grill, chances are your grill has dials that govern how hot the grill gets when cooking. Make sure these dials are turned to the off position before you start cleaning. If yours is a gas grill, disconnect the gas while wearing gloves to reduce your risk of accident or injury. Use the residual heat to make cleaning easier The sooner you start cleaning the grill FILE PHOTO Lake Living after you cook, the easier it might be to make Take advantage of the barbecue heat after cooking on the grill and the cooking surfaces sparkle. That’s because clean off the grate before it cools down. the residual heat can make it easier to remove
any leftover buildup from barbecue sauce or seasoning that stuck to the grill after you removed your food. Use a wire brush to clean the cooking grates Wire brushes are ideal for cleaning cooking grates. Such brushes can quickly remove grease and food particles, saving grill owners the trouble of scrubbing away with traditional sponges. Once the wire brush’s work is done, you can then clean the grill with a soapy sponge. Remove food that fell into the well Food inevitably falls into the well of a grill no matter how skilled a grill master might be. If left to fester in the well, such foods can pose a safety risk and promote the growth of bacteria. Clean the remaining areas of the grill Marinade, sauce or condiments may find their way onto areas of your grill, and if left unattended, such substances can make a grill very dirty over time. Remove these substances after each barbecue to keep your grill looking new through the summer.

The materials you decide to use can affect the project in numerous ways, from the initial investment to maintenance years from now. Deciding between wood and composite decking can seem complex. You may have heard composite is superior but costly. You also may have heard that wood is greener yet more susceptible to bugs. Get the facts when it comes to wood versus composite so you can make the right choice for your home.
COST
Building a deck with composite materials will cost more than virgin wood initially, but not as much as most people think. The substructure is the same cost for either option and the remainder of the project could cost about 25 percent more for composite. That cost, though, is often recouped over time because there is little maintenance required with composites, while maintaining a wood deck can cost hundreds of dollars each year. Want to see how the numbers compare? Visit www.epa.gov and check out the EPA’s GreenScapes
Tools Excel Decking Cost Calculator and an example that compares the cost of building a new deck with composites versus conventional wood.
MAINTENANCE
Low maintenance is in high demand for homeowners, and decking is no exception. Wood decks require major maintenance every one to two years. Nail pops and splinters are common safety hazards with wood decks, as are cracked, warped and rotted boards that need to be replaced. Plus, wood decks must be refinished every year or two, a project that can cost $450 to $850 per year and take an entire weekend or longer to complete. Capped composite decking from Fiberon will never splinter, crack or require staining, unlike wood decking. This composite decking is so durable that it comes with the industry’s first stain and fade warranty for up to 25 years. Typical maintenance requires just a few hours a year to clean the surface with a deck brush or power sprayer. Visit www.fiberondecking.com to learn more.
ECO-FRIENDLY
Many people believe wood is a more environmentally friendly option than composite decking. In actuality, the opposite is true. Composites are created from recycled
materials and keep waste out of landfills. Fiberon alone prevents more than 50,000 tons of plastic and other waste from ending up in landfills or incinerators every year. Composite decking also saves trees. In addition to using locally sourced plastics, Fiberon composite decking includes wood scraps acquired from nearby cabinet and door manufacturers. Furthermore, just because it’s wood doesn’t mean it doesn’t contain chemicals. In fact, most wood lumber is pressure-treated with different chemicals to boost its integrity and make it last longer. Additionally, because wood is susceptible to bugs like termites, you might need to treat the space to prevent infestation. Termites, of course, are not a concern with composite decking.
APPEARANCE
Wood is undeniably beautiful and always blends nicely with the natural elements of the outdoors. But thanks to advanced technology, composites mimic real wood so closely that often you can’t tell the difference. This is particularly beneficial if you want the look of an exotic species without the upkeep. Today, capped composite technology allows for realistic wood coloring and embossed grain patterns.

One of the biggest trends in home landscaping is the move to create an outdoor oasis in the backyard – a peaceful getaway just outside the patio doors. More and more homeowners are creating outdoor living spaces as a way of countering the stress of daily life.
outdoor sanctuary at home
How to create an The wildly popular outdoor-living trend has inspired homeowners across the country to add value and comfort to their properties by revitalizing their backyards. In an increasingly hectic world, having a peaceful place at home where you can enjoy nature and fresh air has become a top priority. But when you look at your outdoor space, is it more boring than beautiful? By adding a few key elements you can transform any yard into a stunning retreat that is ideal for spending more time outdoors and disconnecting from stress. Add natural elements The visual components that make up your outdoor space dramatically affect the emotion it conveys. To create a relaxing atmosphere, add low-maintenance touches that reflect Mother Nature. Try blending softer elements, such as containers of flowers, with hardscape elements, like landscape rocks. Because real rock can be expensive and difficult to move, opt for Fiberlite Landscape Rocks that are light, affordable and hand-painted for a realistic appearance. Increase comfort To make your outdoor spaces comfortable, think about how you’ll be using it most often. For entertaining, you’ll want to add a table, chairs and umbrella for dining al fresco. If you’ll be relaxing solo most often, set up a plush chair and comfortable accents like blankets and pillows. If you have a garden or large yard, create meditative spaces with strategically placed chairs or benches for quiet contemplation. Eliminate the negative Every yard has features that are less desirable. Things like utility boxes, air-conditioning units, HVAC
compressors and hoses are necessary, but these items are eyesores that detract from the ambience of an outdoor space. Fortunately, it’s easy to conceal unsightly yard features with vinyl outdoor fencing from Outdoor Essentials. This durable decorative fencing hides the negative while adding a decorative accent that is visually appealing. Create solace with sound An outdoor sanctuary should go beyond what you see to tantalize all the senses. Sound is a key consideration that can help the space feel like a true escape. That’s why adding a water feature is an excellent investment. A burbling water fountain is a beautiful decorative piece that also provides a soothing sound. Wind chimes are another option for adding serene sound to outdoor areas. Create attractive focal points Gardening is a popular pastime that provides respite from life’s demands. Whether you plan to grow vivid blooming flowers or scrumptious vegetable plants, you can transform your garden into a gorgeous focal point in your yard with a raised bed. Outdoor Essentials’ vinyl raised garden beds frame and raise your garden masterpieces for easier access while simultaneously providing a stunning focus within the yard. One final thought – while these steps will transform your backyard into a peaceful sanctuary, make sure to incorporate personal touches to make the space feel like your own. Choose decor, color palettes and patterns that speak to you. That way when you step outside your door, you’ll feel like you’ve entered a personalized oasis. (BPT)

Curb appeal can set your home apart from others, and improving curb appeal doesn’t have to be expensive.
ways to add curb appeal Curb appeal can help a home get noticed in a bustling real estate market. Curb appeal also can contribute to the aesthetics of a neighborhood for residents who plan to stay put, and many homeowners feel an attractive exterior is just as important as a comfortable interior. Homeowners do not have to spend a fortune to improve the curb appeal of their homes. With these strategies, anyone’s home can take on a more appealing look.
CLEAN UP
A messy, untamed front yard can detract from a perfectly acceptable home. Cleaning up your yard and home’s exterior is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to give the place a makeover. Cut back overgrown shrubs, plants and trees. Make sure the front door is clearly visible and that any walkways are edged and accessible. Store garbage pails behind a barrier and keep trash out of sight. Store children’s toys in the backyard rather than strewn across the front lawn. These simple steps can improve curb appeal instantly.
SPRUCE UP THE LAWN
A well-manicured lawn can go a long way to making a home more appealing. If your thumb is anything but green, hire a professional lawn and garden service to help you establish a lush, green lawn.
DRESS TO IMPRESS
The entryway to a home is the first thing visitors will see. Be sure the front door and entryway are in good repair. A pop of color can’t hurt, either. If you do not like the idea of painting the door a vivid hue, dress it up with a colorful wreath or another decorative accent. Carry your interior design style to the outdoors as well. Welcoming accents, such as cushioned chairs or potted plants, also add curb appeal. Consider painting house numbers on a terra-cotta pot and filling it with plants. The pot will be decorative and functional.
RELY ON SYMMETRY
Symmetry is pleasing to the eye and easy to arrange. Use it to frame your entryway and throughout your property. Symmetrical use of lighting fixtures, plants, trees, and decorative items really can have an impact.
DON’T FORGET LIGHTING
Outdoor lighting adds appeal and safety to a property. Use lighting to accent a special landscaping feature or to illuminate a walkway. Few people enjoy approaching a dark home, and outdoor lighting can ensure your property always is well lit. Remember, curb appeal is applicable both day and night. Improving on curb appeal can make a difference in how others view your home. (METRO CREATIVE)

Keep a top of mind when choosing a new home
Make the flat screen the focus When it comes to TVs in a man cave, bigger is still better. Big alone won’t do, though – the flat screen needs to have the latest technology so it can provide the best picture of the game or movie. To make the room look more professional, put the flat-screen TV in a built-in entertainment center that can also house the stereo and gaming systems. Keep the drink station handy Many man caves will have a built-in bar or mini-fridge, but sometimes the space just isn’t available. Clayton Homes has customization options like a hidea-way wet bar to keep your space open
while leaving room for all the amenities you want in the man cave. This way you can access everything when refreshments are needed without taking up too much space. Add an element of warmth While a fireplace hasn’t always been included in man caves, adding one to today’s room is a good idea. Not only does it give the room some comfort and style, it also opens the room up for multiple uses, like hosting company. Entertain movie-theater style Add surround sound and the high quality of your flat-screen TV, and you’ll never want to go to the movie theater again.

It used to be that the man’s room – or man cave – was relegated to the basement or the garage. Now homes are being designed with the man cave already in mind to give men a place to call their own. Man caves have changed over the years, becoming a part of the home itself instead of a corner in the basement or garage. They’re still a sanctuary where the man of the house can get away to catch his favorite show or game, but now they make for a great place to host friends for a card game or to throw a sports party. Many homeowners looking to change homes this year will be thinking about including a man cave. If you’re in the market, check out the following suggestions from Clayton Homes:
At left: As a finishing touch, choose some camo-patterned wallpaper to really transform the room from just another entertaining area to a true man cave. Below: Consider including darkened curtains to cover the windows, and a leather furniture movie-theater seating arrangement so you can really enjoy the action.
Bring in the comfortable furniture Leather furniture is always a hit and will give your man cave the comfort you want and deserve. Plus, the smell of leather is very masculine. From leather couches to recliners, make certain your man cave has the perfect seating to cater to your comfort. Give it the manly look Other decorative touches could include sports team items, hunting and fishing decorations and bar lights. Including a man cave in your home plans gives the gentleman a space to call his own. There are so many ways to customize a space, you can be sure the entire family will enjoy it. (BPT)
Preserve indoor air quality during your remodeling project Are you beginning a remodeling project? Well, take a deep breath because your air is about to be affected in a major way. Is this preventable? It can be, if you take action. The most important time to act is before you begin your remodeling project, especially if you are staying in your home during the process. It is your job to make sure your contractor has your family and overall indoor air quality top of mind before workers start invading your home and creating a dust storm. This is a vital concern for homeowners, especially if someone in your home has breathing difficulties, such as asthma or another chronic medical condition. In the past, contractors used patchwork dust-control solutions that are ineffective at preventing hazardous dust from traveling throughout the home. Today, more contractors are remodeling smarter and cleaner by providing livable remodeling to their clients. Here are three ways to ensure that
your contractor understands your need for excellent IAQ and protecting your livability within your home: Learn about the dangers of dust Remember the last time you kicked up a lot of dust? Your eyes itched. Your throat burned. You might have even felt dizzy and fatigued. Those are common signs of indoor air pollution. You need to understand exactly what your family and pets could be inhaling while a contractor builds your dream kitchen. An example of harmful substances that might be uncovered during your remodel: • Materials such as drywall, cement and sawdust • Dangerous substances such as silica, asbestos and lead • Mold and mildew • Dirt and debris of many sizes, including ones you can’t even see • Organic matter like rodent feces and

The amount of traffic a room gets and whether that room is accessible from the outdoors are important factors to consider when selecting a floor covering.
IVC GROUP Lake Living
From top to bottom The right flooring can make all the difference
If you’ve repainted the walls, added new furniture and changed your sofa pillows, yet something is still amiss in your home, consider that large surface area – the floor. Floors set the tone of your living space. To avoid surprises and unexpected costs, try these tips from the World Floor Covering Association. Find the right flooring When it comes to selecting the most appropriate flooring for your home, consider how it will be used and how often. A high-traffic room demands materials that can stand up to wear and tear. High-quality flooring is essential. And buying from a reputable retailer – one who knows their products, gets to know their customers and will be there to stand behind what they recommend and sell – is going to pay off down the road. Not all flooring is the same. In every
category –carpet, tile, resilient, laminate, hardwood – there are products of varying quality. It is important to do your research and, just as important, to work with a retailer who has firsthand history with the flooring products they sell and the manufacturers that make them. Maintenance is another key consideration. Some floors require more upkeep than others. For instance, some types of hardwood can become dull if not swept or mopped daily. If you have kids or pets, consider the following: multi-colored, textured carpet to hide blemishes and wear, engineered wood offering diamond-hard surface treatments to avoid abrasions, or resilient vinyl, which can be made to look like many other types of flooring and is very durable and easy to clean. Ceramic tile is another good option for high traffic. The area of the country in which you live has an impact on the flooring you choose, too. How much sunlight does
the room get? Many flooring materials won’t fade, but some – including carpet – might. Humidity can affect durability. Some floors are fine in humid environments, but others – such as wood – are not. Are you considering radiant heat under your floors? Not all surface materials are compatible with this option. Working with a knowledgeable retailer will be very helpful when making final decisions. Considering overall design Think about how the room will be furnished. Would you like to warm up the room with a carpet or cool it down with ceramic? Do you want a patterned or brightly colored floor to liven up neutral furniture or a quiet background to help statement pieces stand out? Cultivate your own design ideas then call on the knowledge and experience of a reliable flooring retailer to see it through.
Your path to purchasing Check out your flooring options in person. Online research is important, but talking with a professional who deals in flooring every day is essential. Plus, there’s no substitute for seeing and touching the flooring you wish to purchase. There are a few more things to consider. The following list of questions prepared by the World Floor Covering Association can help you make an informed choice and avoid unexpected costs and surprises: • Does the retailer offer a complimentary inspection prior to installation to determine what kind of substrate you have and whether it is flat? • What does the retailer charge to remove and dispose of old flooring? Removing flooring can increase costs substantially, so you may want to find

•FLOORING – from Page 17 flooring that can go over your existing flooring. • Will your doors clear your new floors? If not, the doors may need to be trimmed to accommodate the new height, or you might want to choose alternative flooring materials. • Does the retailer charge to move furniture? Be sure to mention heavy items that might not be found in every home, such as a piano. • If the new flooring is going into a bathroom, will the retailer remove the
toilet as part of their installation? • Does your new flooring need to be acclimated prior to installation? • Will the installers clean up after themselves? Prepare for installation The retailer should provide a checklist on how to prepare for installation. In addition, if your renovation project involves painting or staining walls where new floors are going to be put down, the wall treatment should be completed first.
•POOL WATER – from Page 4 “Robotic pool cleaners do three things real well,” he says. “They vacuum and scrub pool floors, some actually scrub the walls helping to remove algae and prevent permanent staining, they have a filtration system built into them that helps purify the water, and they help circulate the water and available chemicals to provide a healthier cleaner pool.” Many owners also appreciate the robotic pool cleaner’s energy efficiency as it only costs about 5 cents a cycle hour to use. Robotic pool cleaners also work independently, just set them in the pool, press a button and off they go, saving pool owners both time and labor. Prices have also come down considerably, making them more affordable than ever. “When it comes to robotic pool cleaners, my favorite brand has to be Aquabot,” Giovanisci says. “They invented robotic pool cleaning and make a really simple and easy-to-use product.” The best

pool cleaners are specifically designed to also filter the pool’s water, helping to remove the harmful contaminants. Aquabot robotic pool cleaners, for example, actually filter water down to two microns, reducing the need to rely solely on chemical solutions. And one innovation that really seems to help are the power washing jets; they channel the clean, filtered water to power wash surfaces and help vacuum small particles like silt and sand. Whatever pool cleaning solution you decide upon, Giovanisci says efficiency is the key. “Purchase from brands you trust and let technology do the work for you. And with all of the options available today, simply invest in the features that are important to you and your pool,” he says. “Enjoy and with minimal effort you’ll have the cleanest, healthiest pool in the neighborhood.” (BPT)

•AIR QUALITY – from Page 15 dead bugs If you have IAQ problems before a remodeling project, they could be magnified by 10 times if a dust management plan is not in place. Visit livableremodeling.com to learn how this dust can be ingested by humans and pets every day during a project. Also, remember that just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it isn’t there. Smaller dust particles are the most hazardous. They are lighter, stay in the air longer and travel farther than larger particles. Make a livability plan As the protector of your household, you need to be armed and ready to ask your contractor some tough questions to make sure your family is safe throughout this long and hard process. Before you hire a contractor, make sure you relay the information you’ve learned about hazardous dust. Create a checklist of discussion points for contractors that can be the basis for your livability plan. For tips, visit http://buildclean.com/ homeowner/tips.php. For example, what is the project timeline? What will be your temporary living arrangements if, for example, the contractor is working on the kitchen or bathroom? And, most importantly, what is the contractor’s plan to control potentially
hazardous dust from invading the rest of your home? Find a “clean” contractor Top contractors across the nation are using new tools and work processes to minimize the dust. Your contractor should have you covered, if you pick the right one. One of the top new practices is to collect dust while it is still airborne, such as with the new BuildClean Dust Control System. Collecting particulates in this manner is the most effective way to capture and virtually eliminate all types of worksite dust – up to 90 percent of airborne dust, to be exact. The result? You can breathe easy. Your indoor air quality can even improve to better than normal levels. Homeowners like Jim Colpi of Northbrook, Ill., appreciate the efficiency and effectiveness of BuildClean. He saw first-hand how BuildClean picked up dust from all stages of his basement remodel – including the wood framing, drywall installation and sanding – and kept it out of his family’s living areas. “It was kind of shocking that there was no dust anywhere. Period,” Colpi says. “It’s as if the project had not even happened.” For helpful tips and important points to discuss with your contractors visit livableremodeling.com.

Set a few containers on the front or back steps, in the corner of your deck or other location where they can be enjoyed. Try stacking and planting several containers to create a display with greater vertical interest. Check the views when looking from inside the house out as well as when enjoying the space outdoors. Strategically place containers for the greatest viewing pleasure. Save even more space by using railing planters. Melinda Myers You can dress up the porch or deck by filling these planters with colorful flowers and edibles. Make sure they are sturdy and easy to install. Reduce time spent installing and maintaining with easy-to-install self-watering rail planters, like Viva balcony rail planters (gardeners.com). Don’t limit yourself to flowers. Mix in a few edibles and bring some homegrown flavor to your outdoor entertaining. You and your guests will enjoy plucking a few mint leaves to flavor beverages, basil to top a slice of pizza or sprig of dill to top grilled fish. Herbs not only add flavor to your meals, but texture and fragrance to container gardens. And the many new dwarf vegetable varieties are suited to containers. Their small size makes them easy to include and many have colorful fruit that is not only pretty, but delicious. Add a few edible flowers like nasturtium and pansies. Dress up a plate of greens with edible flowers for a gourmet touch. Or freeze a few pansy flowers in ice cubes and add them to a glass of lemonade or sparkling water. Include flowers like globe amaranth (Gomphrena), Lisianthus, and daisies that are great for cutting. You’ll enjoy your garden inside and out throughout the season. And don’t forget to plant some flowers for the butterflies to enjoy. Zinnias, cosmos, and marigolds are just a few that are sure to brighten any space, while attracting butterflies to your landscape. Salvia, penstemon and flowering tobacco will help bring hummingbirds in close, so you’ll have a better view. So make this the year you select a container or two that best fits your space and gardening style. Fill it with a well-drained potting mix and combination of beautiful ornamental and edible plants to enjoy all season long. The additions are sure to enhance your landscape and keep your guests coming back for more. How to attract the most colorful birds to your backyard
Sparrows to doves, mockingbirds to magpies, every bird that visits your backyard this season will bring its unique brand of delight. Yet when a particularly colorful species shows up, you can’t help but feel a special thrill at the beauty of their plumage and song. You can take steps to draw the most colorful species to your feeder and fill your backyard with their vibrant, bright displays throughout the season. First, research what types of birds live in your region. Some species may summer in your area and then winter elsewhere. Some may arrive in spring to breed and raise young, only to move on as fall approaches. Online resources such as the Audubon Society’s bird guide can help you identify the colorful species that may be found in your area this summer. Next, take action to make your backyard attractive to the birds you want to attract. Provide their preferred nesting habitat, plenty of fresh, clean water and a reliable supply of their favorite foods in a style feeder they favor. The bird-feeding experts at Cole’s Wild Bird Products offer some expert tips on common colorful birds found throughout North America and the types of bird feed they prefer:
Cardinals Among the best-known and most-loved backyard beauties, cardinals vary in hue from the brilliant red plumage of the males to the more subdued brownish red feathers of females. Both genders have black markings around the beak and darker feathers on the wings and back. Cardinals are seed eaters and are particularly fond of Safflower and Cole’s patented blend, “Hot Meats,” seed. They are attracted to the bitter taste of Safflower and go nuts for the spicy flavor of Hot Meats. Hot Meats are nutritious sunflower meats infused with fiery hot habanero chilies. A great no-waste, no-mess feed, it delivers more feed per pound, and no need for under-the-feeder cleanup. The chili peppers taste hot to mammals like squirrels, but birds do not feel the heat at all.
Cardinals also appreciate suet, so be sure to serve this high-energy food in different varieties throughout your back yard. Bluebirds Don’t mistake the sassy blue jay for a bluebird. These brightly colored birds sport brilliant blue feathers on their heads, backs and the tops of their wings, and warm russet fading to white on their bellies. Bluebirds stand out not only for their beauty, but also for their taste in feed. Bluebirds love spice and suet, so try a feed with some kick, like Blazing Hot Blend. All natural and chemical free, this blend combines a patented habanero chili oil formula (which appeals to birds but keeps squirrels at bay) with the most-preferred types of seeds. Bluebirds love every form of suet, so serve up Hot Meats Suet cakes, or a specialty suet like Suet Kibbles. They also favor mealworms, so to avoid the “ick factor” of serving live mealworms, try Cole’s dried mealworm version. Goldfinches When one of these bright yellow and black birds visits your yard, it’s like a slice of sunshine has settled at your feeder. With vivid yellow bodies, black masks above their beaks and black and white striping on their wings, goldfinches are among the flashiest, most vivid visitors to backyards. Lure them with sunflower, and niger seeds, or try Finch Friends which combines their two favorite seeds in one mix. Indigo bunting Another beautiful blue bird, the indigo bunting is also known for its boisterous and lovely song. Indigo buntings favor seeds and berries, but will also eat insects. To beckon this bunting to your backyard, try serving White Millet, a favorite seed choice. Baltimore orioles That blaze of brilliant orange, capped by black may herald the arrival of a Baltimore oriole in your backyard. Woo these flashy fellows by serving cut fruit and berries, as well as peanut butter and suet. Cole’s Natural Peanut Suet Cake delivers the peanut butter base that orioles and other songbirds prefer, paired with the energy benefits of nutrient-dense suet. An interesting fact is orioles will try and feed off of hummingbird feeders, they like the nectar.

GROWN GREEN Create a water-conservative garden Families can decorate their homes with colorful flowers and bring healthy, homegrown foods to the table with gardens. Gardening, however, can use quite a bit of water, and in states struck by drought it’s important to conserve as much water as possible. If you’re living in an area of the country under drought advisement, you can still have a garden this year if you carefully plan what you plant, how you plant it, and how you give it the water it needs. Here are some water-conservation tips for growing a garden and using the least amount of water possible: Get the right plants Choose plants that thrive in drier conditions. Vegetables like corn, spinach, mustard greens and some beans are drought-tolerant, and desert rose and snake plant are beautiful landscaping plants that need less water. Water when needed Water only where it’s needed so it doesn’t go to waste. When you use a lawn sprinkler to water your garden, much of the spray misses your flowers and vegetables and ends up on the grass, the sidewalk or the neighbor’s yard. Make certain the water gets to the roots of your plants via a drip-irrigation system like Raindrip. Raindrip irrigation uses 70 percent less water than underground sprinklers and frees the user from
Build beds Build beds that encourage soil to stay damp as long as possible. Some ways to do this include digging the bed deeper to help loosen the soil prior to planting. This gives roots the chance to go reach deeper and gain access to where water might be more available. Also, once planted, cover the bed with a good layer of mulch or compost. This will help keep the soil good and moist.
Use the rainy season Raise vegetable crops during the rainy season. Many areas of the country have a cooler rainy season. Peas, leafy greens, radishes and other vegetables with short growing seasons are great for planting early in the spring and sometimes again late in the fall. Because temperatures are cooler and the early and late seasons tend to produce more rainfall, you can grow FILE PHOTO Lake Living vegetables using less water. Standing water in your yard? Solve your drainage problems in three steps Standing water in the backyard is an unwelcome sight for any homeowner. While it’s unsightly and robs your yard of valuable green space, standing water can also cause excessive damage to your home’s foundation and even damage hardscape areas such as patios. These problems can cause thousands of dollars in repairs if left unaddressed. So what can you do to rid your property of standing water and to prevent long-term structural damage to your home? Start with these steps.
FILE PHOTO Lake Living
Drainage issues can cause serious damage to a home’s foundation. If you have standing water in your yard, figure out what the problem is and take care of it before it becomes costly.
Identify the problem areas The first thing you should do is to identify problem areas that routinely fill with water or could be potential targets for standing water. Look for low spots in your yard, especially areas near the home’s foundation or hardscape. Areas of concern near your home could also be the result of rainwater runoff from the house itself. Check to see that your downspouts are not obstructed in any way and inspect your driveway to see if water is accumulating near the garage door. Water in
this region can easily enter your home. Solve drainage problems Once you have identified the problem areas on your property, it’s time to determine how to fix it permanently. Most people try to move dirt and other simple remedies to save money, however, these fixes are temporary and do not work long term. For a more permanent solution visit ndspro.com/home-drainage-systems to find the drainage answer best for you. They provide you with do it yourself solutions for your drainage problems. If you would prefer to hire a contractor, you can find them on sites such as Yelp and Angie’s List or by using online search tools and key words like drainage and yard drainage. You may have also heard the term “French drains” used as a drainage solution and wondered how that helps. French drains are comprised of a trench filled with gravel and perforated pipe that has been wrapped with a sediment shield fabric to create a void space underground. This prevents water from
puddling above ground. Check out ndspro.com’s resources page for videos on how to install a French drain and more information. Lean on landscaping For standing water danger areas farther away from the home, a landscaping project can offer a scenic solution. Consider building a rain garden in the wet region with prairie plants such as purple cone flowers or blackeyed susans. If you have the space, willow, river birch and bald cypress trees all thrive in areas where their roots will be constantly wet. These landscaping ideas can help you combat standing water problems however you cannot rely on the plants alone to handle your water issue. They will be of some help, but you will need a more permanent drainage solution like those discussed above in order to protect your home’s foundation. Solving your drainage problems starts with understanding the unique situation on your property and acting efficiently.

Lawn mowing safety tips
so you can enjoy your free time Enjoying those warm summer and fall afternoons is a luxury, and often the stresses of the office or the yard duties like mowing the lawn get in the way. With zero turn mowers making the time spent mowing the grass more efficient, more and more homeowners are getting to enjoy their afternoons and free time. One thing owners of zero turn mowers should be aware of are the safety guidelines, which are designed to ensure that an afternoon spent mowing the lawn won’t result in injury. Toro provides the following safety tips to help keep homeowners enjoying those summer afternoons: 1. Wear appropriate clothing – Loose clothing and hanging jewelry should be avoided when using a zero turn mower. Instead, wear shoes that cover the toes, long pants, and hearing and eye protection. 2. Avoid obstacles and drop-offs – Riding lawn mowers are designed for flat and unobstructed lawns. If you have a pond, dropoff or slope greater than 15 degrees, use a push lawn mower near these areas. 3. Let machine cool when adding fuel – Always add fuel to your zero turn mower before starting the machine. If you need to add fuel during the middle of mowing your yard, let the machine sit for 15 minutes before opening the tank for refueling. 4. Keep an eye aware – Always look for children, pets or objects on the lawn when mowing with a zero turn mower. Also, know which direction the clippings are blowing so you can avoid hitting property or other people with them. 5. Solo riders only – Zero turn mowers are designed to seat only the operator of the vehicle. It isn’t safe to allow children to sit anywhere on the vehicle. When purchasing your first zero turn mower, carefully read the operator’s manual and then take the machine to a flat and open place so you can familiarize yourself with setting speeds and changing direction. The freedom of being outside in your backyard, soaking up the sun and not sitting in front of a computer at the office is exhilarating. Keep these safety tips in mind as you head out to mow the lawn this week, and you’ll be enjoying the job all summer long. (BPT)

Now is the time to have your central air conditioning unit serviced, before the summer cooling season is in full swing. Clean out the ventilation system in your home and have the AC checked annually by a profession for optimal performance.
Simple
WARM-WEATHER TUNE UPS for your home
Are you revved up for warmer weather? Just as you’d tune up a convertible to drive you into the summer sunshine, now is the time to perform routine maintenance on your home so it’s ready for the hottest months of the year. Use this summer maintenance checklist to get your home in tip-top shape both outdoors and indoors – and to avoid repairs down the road. Do an outdoor inspection Walk around the outside of your home and check for peeling or cracking paint, then patch up the spots to avoid wood rot later on. Inspect your gutter system to see if it’s in good shape or it needs repair. Take a look at your lawn-watering hoses and faucets, and replace as needed. Get outdoor AC units ready While you’re outdoors, remove any debris from the fan area in the outdoor central air conditioning unit, ensuring that it runs efficiently. If you have window air conditioners, remove the covers and change the filters.
FILE PHOTO Lake Living
Don’t take your riding lawn mower down a steep slope or use near a drop-off or pond. They’re designed to be used on flat and unobstructed lawns.
Clean indoor air As much as you love the warm summer air, it can also trigger allergies so this is a great time of year to install an indoor air cleaner. American Standard’s AccuClean Whole-Home Air Filtration System can remove up to 99.98 percent of airborne particles and allergens such as pollen, dust mites, mildew, pet hair and dander, fungus and bacteria from the filtered air, so everyone in your home can breathe easier. Keep indoor temperatures under control Don’t place lamps, TV sets and other heat-
producing devices beneath a wall-mounted thermostat, as rising heat from that equipment can cause your air conditioning unit to overcool the house. Locate the thermostat on an inside wall, where it’s away from windows and doors that give it direct sunlight. People also generate heat, so if you’re planning to host a party, this is the perfect season to get everyone out of the house and onto the deck for a barbecue. Reduce humidity Infiltration of humid outdoor air can be your heating and air conditioning system’s worst enemy, eating up excess energy to keep you cool. Find the places where air can sneak into your home, such as around the foundation, the entrances to doors and windows, and plug them with caulking, weather stripping or plastic. To further reduce humidity, make sure appliances that produce moisture, such as clothes dryers and dishwashers, are properly vented to the outside. Schedule cooling system maintenance Caring for your home’s heating, ventilating and air conditioning system allows it to work smarter for you and your family. A qualified Customer Care Dealer can inspect, clean and make necessary adjustments to your home’s indoor and outdoor cooling units to ensure trouble-free operation and peak performance during the hottest months, when you need it most. By following this checklist, you’ll not only be revved up for warmer weather – but your home will be, too.
