Fair Fun in 2021! Racine County Fair returns July 28 to Aug. 1 By Tracy Ouellette EDITOR
After a heartbreaking cancellation of the Racine County Fair in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic, this year’s fair is moving full-steam ahead and getting ready to host tens of thousands of guests on the fairground in Union Grove. While the fair did hold its animal auction virtually last year, many of the area’s youth didn’t get to show their projects in the other fair competitions which highlight the area’s youth and agriculture. This year, the fair is back with all its competitions, animals, carnival, live entertainment and more. Reigning over this year’s fair is the new Fairest of the Fair is Kynzi Cole, who was crowned June 4. According to Racine County Fair officials, the Fairest of the Fair program provides multiple opportunities for individuals to represent the Racine County Agricultural Society and the Racine County Fair for a one-year term. The Fairest of the Fair is the official ambassador to welcome patrons to the Racine County Fair. This individual also assists in promoting the fair industry and get involved at community events. The fair royalty assists the Fairest of the Fair at the Racine County Fair, and welcoming fair patrons throughout fair week. This individual also attends community events to help promote the Racine County Fair. See Page 7 for more information about Cole and the other fair royalty for 2021. Raising awareness of the County Fair, agriculture industry by

aising awareness of the Racine County Fair and the county’s agriculture industry hasn’t been easy amid the COVID-19 pandemic. But Racine County Fairest of the Fair Jessica Noble and Agriculture Ambassador Chase Pirocanac have both found ways to navigate through uncertainty. Noble, a 2017 Burlington High School graduate, is in her unprecedented second year as Fairest of the Fair after organizers canceled the 2020 Racine County Fair. “My first year serving was very typical, I was able to follow the schedule that many (Fairest of the Fairs) before me have,” she said. But last spring, when the COVID-19 pandemic reached intensity, Noble found herself with an uncertain schedule and decided to transition promotions to an online format, or to not hold them at all. Instead of meeting children inside classrooms, which closed because of the pandemic, Noble opted to represent the Racine County Fair on Zoom videoconferencing platform. “I was able to visit classrooms as fairest over Zoom, and stay engaged over Facebook with the community,” she said. “This part of the year showed myself and the rest of the Fairest committee how to adapt these uncertain times.” When the Racine County Fair, like other neighboring fairs canceled last summer, local organizers asked Noble to remain as Fairest of the Fair through 2021. For Noble, crowned Fairest of Fair in 2019, she didn’t expect to serve for two years. However, the recent University of Wisconsin-Madison graduate with a degree in dairy science said she eagerly accepted maintaining the crown, noting it allowed her more time to connect with the community. “When I was asked to serve another year, I thought to myself, ‘Wow, first time someone has been able to serve for two years,” she said. “But then I quickly realized that I am happy they kept me for another year as the fairest.” The Racine County Fair, while offering livestock shows and auctions in 2020, did not have a traditional fair with the public in attendance.
Some hesitation
Pirocanac, named agriculture ambassador last September, will serve a term of one year. Initially, Pirocanac admits some hesitation to accepting the position, noting the pandemic would have hindered how she connects with the community.
Jessica Noble, 2019 Racine County Fairest of the Fair, accepts the crown from predecessor Kayla Wilson during a ceremony two years ago. Noble has served an unprecedented twoyear term as Fairest of the Fair because of the COVID-19 pandemic. JASON ARNDT Racine County Fair

“Originally, I was a little timid to step into the position because I wasn’t sure how it was going to look,” she said. Pirocanac, however, decided to take the post because she exhibits a passion for agriculture. She was involved in Burlington Back 40 4-H Club for 13 years and Burlington High School FFA for three years, including one year as treasurer. She also spent years showing animals and other projects at the Racine County Fair. She comes from a seven-generation family farm, which started in dairy production, and later became a hobby farm. “That is how I got my start and interest in agriculture,” she said. Pirocanac, a 2020 BHS graduate who attends UW-Whitewater, said she wanted to help the agriculture industry while sharing tidbits of information with the public. Using a Facebook page, Pirocanac spends time visiting farms and businesses focused on agriculture, ranging from an ice cream store to local butcher, Harry
Hansen’s Meat Service. “I wanted to make an impact in the position, so that is where the Facebook page took a huge part,” she said. “Through the Facebook page, I was able to share what I was doing.” Pirocanac said the benefits of visiting farms are two-fold, especially since the agriculture industry took an economic hit last year, when restaurants closed and disrupted the supply chain. Pirocanac said it is important for people to support local businesses, including farmers. “Buy local, Pick ‘n Save and Walmart both have the ‘I’m local’ tags because it is really important,” she said.
More than dairy
When people envision agriculture, they often picture cows and dairy, but Pirocanac said the industry goes beyond the dairy farm. Pirocanac, who has visited dairy farms, has also ventured out to Jasperson Sod Farm in the Town of Norway and shared with her Facebook followers on how
Jasperson produces grass for customers and commercial businesses. “When people picture agriculture, they think of the dairy farm or something like that, so I try to broaden their horizons on what the definition of agriculture is,” she said. “I love visiting places that people don’t usually consider agriculture.” Piroconac, whose term continues through September, has more plans to share agriculture throughout Racine County and at the Racine County Fair this summer.
Better days ahead
While the last year brought uncertainty, Noble believes better days are ahead, noting some activities are slowly returning to normal. “It seems that things are starting to get back to normal, and with that means that summer events like the Racine County Fair will come back in full swing,” she said. Noble said many old favorites as well as new features will come to the Racine County Fair in 2021. “We have a few new things this year including a monster truck show,” she said. “This is a completely new grandstand show to us and I think that the community will truly like that.”

Newly crowned Fairest of the Fair Kynzi Cole looks forward to representing the Racine County Fair scheduled from July 28 through Aug. 1 in Union Grove. Cole, a 2020 Muskego High School graduate, earned the crown during a June 4 coronation ceremony on the Racine County Fairgrounds among three finalists. The crowning, unlike previous years, happened before scheduled Racine County Fair to allow the Fairest of the Fair an opportunity to promote the event and jumpstart the summer season. Richelle Kastenson, Fairest of the Fair Committee member, said Cole underwent a challenging process to become the 2021 Racine County Fairest of the Fair. “The process of becoming Fairest of the Fair is no easy task,” she said. “It is similar to that of job interview, so the contestants do individual interviews, • CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

events announcements, they have group interviews, dinners.” On June 4, Cole and other contestants presented audio commercials promoting the Racine County Fair, delivered a brief self-introduction and answered impromptu questions. Cole, according to Kastenson, garnered a $1,000 scholarship from the Racine County Agricultural Society and will represent the Racine County Fair at the annual Fairest of the Fairs convention held in January. Additionally, Cole earned a lifetime pass to the Racine County Fair. Cole, who is studying Animal Science at Iowa State University, said receiving the crown from predecessor Jessica Noble felt amazing. “It is really great. I am really excited,” said Cole. She added that she did not expect to earn the crown and simply filled out the application to become a better interviewee. Cole has shown projects at the Racine County Fair for nearly nine years as a member of the Burlington Back 40 4-H Club. Projects include shooting sports, foods and nutrition, vet sciences, music, photography, rabbits, poultry and sheep. At Iowa State, Cole is involved in many organizations, including the Rodeo Club, Beginning Farmers Network and Block and Bridle. The daughter of Jesse Geboy and Dana Cole grew up in the Muskego area and has showed at fairs in Washington, Waukesha and Racine counties. According to Cole, she found the Racine County Fair most enjoyable, crediting the Racine County Agricultural Society. Taylor Schaefer became Fair Royalty as runner-up and earned a $500 scholarship.
