Is FINANCIAL FEAR making it difficult for you to give? have a short-term strategy. More than three-quarters do not work with a financial adviser, and more than half don’t have life insurance, a retirement fund or disability income insurance. The spirit to give continues Yet despite the concerns about their own financial stability, Americans – particularly millennials – are still committed to being generous with their money. Seventy-one percent consider themselves more generous than the average American, and 59 percent think donating time makes a bigger impact than donating money. Sixty-four percent – and 70 percent of millennials – regularly volunteer for a nonprofit with most of those volunteer hours being spent at churches and other organizations that help those in poverty.

Only 10 percent felt they had more money than they needed. The survey also showed many Americans struggle with their finances in other ways. Giving oneself the stability to give back While the importance Americans place on generosity is commendable, research shows many need to shore up their own financial situations as well. What do you do to give back? Do you volunteer your time, your skills or your knowledge? Do you pride yourself on being a generous person? Generosity has always been seen as a positive virtue, and new research from Thrivent Financial shows Americans are placing more emphasis on being generous than ever before. Sixty-one percent of Americans said they would rather be called generous than financially successful, according to the 2015 Money Mindset Report, and a third said they think the purpose of the money they make is to give back, either during their lifetime or afterward. That’s positive news, but the same research shows that while many Americans want to be generous, they aren’t preparing financially for the future. They’re lacking in long-term financial strategies, advice and tools, and this is generally true regardless of how much money a person makes. “The data from our 2015 Money Mindset Report shows that a majority of people want to be generous, but may not be making other decisions that help them down the path of being wise with money,” says Brad Hewitt, CEO of Thrivent Financial. “As people improve their money habits – by spending less than they make, being wise with debt, having short- and long-term

BEST HOLIDAY GIFT FOR SENIORS – Teach them how to use tech to stay connected

If you’re thinking of buying grandma her first ever smartphone or tablet for the holidays, but aren’t sure she’ll be able to handle the technology make that purchase. Studies show technology can lead to the deeper levels of social engagement associated with improved mental and physical wellbeing in older adults. But there’s a catch – you need to help grandma learn how to use that mobile device in order for her to reap the full benefits of social technology. “Simply having technology isn’t what leads to greater life satisfaction for older people,” notes Dr. Kevin O’Neil, chief medical officer of Brookdale Senior Living, and a clinical professor of aging studies at the University of South Florida. “Using technology for meaningful social engagement is what counts, and the rewards can be life-altering for many seniors.” Ample research shows social interactions are good for older people, yet more than a third of Americans older than 80 don’t use technology for social networking, a study by Brookdale and the Stanford Center on Longevity found. Sixty-three percent of seniors do use technology to stay connected to loved ones. Seventy percent who use technology, such as cell phones and computers to stay connected, say it improves their communications with loved ones. And those who do use technology say they feel happier, more satisfied and their health is better, the study found 85 percent said they were satisfied with life, and 72 percent said they were in good or excellent health. “Feeling overwhelmed by the complexities of new technology was the top reason older

people said they didn’t try new technologies,” O’Neil says. “Fortunately, that’s a fairly easy fix. All that’s really required is some assistance from more tech-savvy younger loved ones to help seniors learn how to use new technologies to enrich their social and intellectual lives.” Brookdale, America’s largest provider of senior living communities, has developed programs to help residents learn to use new technology so they can stay socially connected to their loved ones as part of the company’s efforts to use technology to enrich the lives of seniors known as “Rewiring Aging.” O’Neil and the aging experts at Brookdale offer some tips to help seniors overcome barriers to technology use. • If you’re buying technology for an older loved one, remember simple is better and less is more. Forty-one percent of older people polled in the Brookdale study said new technology is too complicated. If you want grandma to be able to make calls, text and access her Facebook account, she probably doesn’t need a smartphone with all the other bells and whistles. Look for a device that does only what she needs and not much more. • Look for devices that are larger, with screens that will be easier to see, such as a tablet versus a smartphone, or a laptop with a larger screen. • Assist with setup of the device. Increase the on-screen font size and use bold to help older eyes more easily see text on small device screens. • Screen colors can affect readability so pay attention to the color of the font and background. Avoid pastels and light colors that are difficult to see. Adjust the device’s background theme to be minimally

distracting. • Help your older loved one create user names and passwords, and write them all down to be stored in a secure location. Be sure to address security settings on social media accounts. Limit who can contact your loved one through social media, and make sure your older loved ones understand why they must never accept online invitations or interactions from people they don’t know in person. • Show your loved one how to use email and text messaging, attach or open photos. Again, stress the importance of never opening an attachment in an email from someone they don’t know. • For seniors with dexterity challenges, a

separate, larger keyboard can make device use much easier. Or, consider showing your loved one how to use voice-to-text applications so typing is unnecessary. • Load some fun brain games onto the device to help stimulate your older loved one’s mind. “Technology can be a wonderful way to enrich older people’s lives, allowing them to stay connected with loved ones regardless of distance and mobility,” O’Neil says. “Helping your older loved one learn how to connect with their loved ones via technology can be a wonderful holiday gift that will benefit them all yearlong.”

Five DIY holidaycrafts

Page 6

GIFT GUIDE THIRD EDITION

DECEMBER 2015

It’s time to deck the halls with tinsel, snowflakes and, of course, a steaming cup of holiday cheer. Get in a festive mood and gather the family to craft unique DIY holiday decorations – and make some fun memories together, too. Festive holiday garland What better way to welcome the season than with holiday garland? Drape it over the fireplace or the Christmas tree, or even in the front window for all to see. First, cut small squares, stars or hearts out of red and green tissue paper. Using construction paper cut out letters from your favorite holiday saying. Place one letter on each shape and attach to twine with clothespins. Feel free to glam it up with sparkles or glitter, too. This craft is an easy classic and will be a hit for holidays to come. Waste not – want not Make use of old wine bottles to create a joyful decoration that is so easy to make, you’ll wonder why you’ve waited so long to get crafting. Simply remove the labels, spray paint three similar bottles and decorate each with one letter of the word “joy.” Keep letters similarly styled with stencils from a local craft store. For extra flair, wrap the neck of the bottles with twine and tie together with a hot glue gun.

Mason jar snow globe Mason jar snow globes are a quick craft, perfect for passing the time on a billowy winter afternoon. The first step is collecting items for the inside of your globe. If you dare, venture outside and find pine cones. For those wishing to stay warm, a snowman or Christmas tree figurine works just as well. Once you’ve decided what you’d like to include, glue the items to the inside of the Mason jar lid. Next, fill the jar with glitter, water and a few drops of glycerin to allow your “snow” to fall more naturally. Finish it up by securing the lid shut with a glue gun. It’s as simple as that. Candy sleighs A craft fit to please your sweet tooth – candy sleighs are a holiday treat the kids can help create. Have you ever noticed the curve of candy canes mirrors that of Santa’s sleigh? For a sweet replica of the big man’s ride, hot glue six to eight candy canes together side-by-side. When finished, add a piece of licorice rope for reins or stockpile with brightly wrapped pieces of candy to mimic presents. A mess-free cleanup Crafting means messy hands, messy counters, messy everything. Why dirty up one more thing, when you can effortlessly turn your faucet on and off without touching

it? The Delta Tesla Faucet featuring Touch2O.xt Technology allows you to do just that. The entire faucet acts as a sensor, activating the water flow when you need it. Equipped with a 4-inch sensor, the faucet automatically shuts off within seconds once

Easy ways to combat holiday stress

The holidays should be joyful and relaxing, filled with quality family time, but with all the pressures of gift buying, parties and traveling, you might view the season a bit differently. Whether you’re worried about money, checking everyone off your gift list or sending your holiday cards, it seems there’s never enough time to get everything done. But the season doesn’t have to bring about feelings of stress and anxiety. When you focus on all the happiness the season brings, you can get back to enjoying what the holidays are all about. Here are some tips to help you beat the many holiday stressors and enjoy this time of year: Get organized Never underestimate the power of list making and planning. Use a planner or your phone to keep track of all the tasks and events on your to-do list. Crossing items off as you go will help keep your stress levels in check.

Be sure to also check your wallet for gift cards you may never use, because bright yellow Coinstar Exchange kiosks offer instant cash when you sell your gift card and are conveniently located at grocery stores. Be realistic You can only make it to so many parties and events in a given time frame, so don’t overdo it. You don’t have to be the perfect holiday host or please every one of your family members. Instead, focus on the traditions and holiday events that mean the most to you. If family events tend to overwhelm you, remember it’s OK to set a time limit for any event or visit.

Take time for yourself Sixty-six percent of holiday shoppers can name at least one thing they’d be willing to do to ensure they can purchase gifts for everyone, Avoid taking on debt including eating out less, spending less on Money worries are one of the biggest entertainment and taking on credit card debt, triggers for holiday stress, but that doesn’t according to the Coinstar Holiday Survey mean you have to go into debt. FIVE WAYS TO RECONNECT

with your loved ones this holiday season

For many people, reconnecting with loved ones is the highlight of the holiday season. This is especially true if it’s the only time of the year they see distant friends or family. Enjoying time with loved ones near and far poses unique challenges, but the rewards are certainly worth it. Get inspired by the ideas below and you’ll be ready to celebrate the holidays with your loved ones, no matter where they are. Celebrate the year The holidays are a wonderful time to focus on the now, but they’re also a great time to reflect on everything that has happened over the past year. Ask distant family to send you their fondest memories of their year and share them with everyone after presents have been opened. This activity is a great way to make relatives, who are only connected digitally, feel included and their photos and emails create a timeless keepsake.

Make it easy for seniors to stay connected If you have an older parent or grandparent in your family you wish you could connect with digitally, technology experts are making it easier than ever for seniors to connect in a safe way designed just for them. One such solution is grandPad, the first digital tablet and network to privately connect the core family with a platform built for seniors 75 and older. It’s a tablet device that every family member can connect with via a smartphone app or website, allowing seniors to video chat with the family, check emails in real-time, share

photos, play games, listen to music, make phone calls and more ($60 per month, grandpad.net). It also makes for a great holiday gift for the senior in your life.

Create a Christmas tree that’s one of a kind There’s no family quite like your family so celebrate that uniqueness with a one of a kind Christmas tree. Instead of the traditional store-bought ornaments and tinsel, ask each family member to make their own ornament and use them to decorate the tree. And if your family isn’t so crafty, have everyone submit a picture of themselves and create ornaments from the photos – thus truly creating a family Christmas tree. Make lasting memories with DIY projects You only get so long to spend with your loved ones, but the memories you create will far outlive the season. This year, try coming together for a family project and use a DIY tool like the Cricut (starts at $179, cricut.com), an electronic cutting machine with cloudbased design software to create an endless array of stunning masterpieces. With Cricut you can cut fabric, leather, vinyl, cardstock, iron-on pieces and more. It’s perfect for creating holiday party invitations, cake decorations, elegant and colorful gift packaging, incredible table centerpieces, festive stickers and creative decals for clothing and throw pillows. Whatever ideas your family has in mind, Cricut can help your creativity flourish

together. Give back and give together The holidays are the season of giving and what better time to do so than with your entire family around. Whether you work together in a soup kitchen, donate clothing, toys or food or you sing carols to those who love to hear them – giving back during the holidays defines the

season and will bring your entire family closer together. The holiday season is that special time of year when we take time away from the daily grind to focus on the important things in life like family and friends. Employ the tips above and you’ll make those celebrations as enjoyable as they are memorable.

DECEMBER 2015

How to be a great holiday guest and host The holiday season is chaotic enough without the added stress of entertaining. Whether you open your house to family and friends, or attend parties hosted by others this season, these tips will help you keep tensions low and stomachs full wherever you celebrate. Don’t show up empty-handed Although the invitation didn’t specifically say to bring a gift, don’t let that be your excuse to show up empty-handed to your family or friends’ holiday festivities. Host gifts don’t need to break the bank. Do a little research about what your host would enjoy – maybe it’s a decorative candle, a cute ornament, their favorite homemade peanut brittle or an assortment of naturally good Arla Havarti and Gouda cheese alongside festive jams and spreads. These options don’t have to cost a pretty penny – just enough to show your host you appreciate all of the hard work and money put into hosting the party. Your thoughtfulness will not go overlooked. Save time and money with a holiday potluck When you are the host, instead of trying to do it all, look to your guests to help build the perfect holiday party menu. It’s customary for the host to supply the main dish and beverages, while the guests bring the rest. To ensure your potluck doesn’t turn out to be all cookies and pie, create a sign-up sheet

for appetizers, side dishes and desserts. That way people get to choose what to bring, but you’ll have an even assortment of delicious food to go around. Add an element of competition by allowing your guests to vote for their favorite dish of the night to earn some holiday bragging rights for next year’s party. Try not to overindulge During the holiday season, it’s easy to get carried away with heavy entrees and sweet treats as vegetable side dishes fall to the wayside. Instead, opt for a dish that feels indulgent even though it’s filled with greens and naturally good seasonal ingredients. This recipe for Apple, Gouda and Farro Salad from the blog Two Peas and Their Pod is a delicious, healthy and hearty addition to any holiday spread. It’s the ultimate cold-weather salad full of flavor and textures from the apple slices, Gouda bits, farro, toasted walnuts, dried cranberries and a simple apple cider vinaigrette. Plus, it takes only minutes to throw together, making it the perfect time-saving side dish for any holiday get-together. Apple, Gouda and Farro Salad Makes 6 servings as a side dish, or 4 servings as a meal Ingredients For the salad –

1/2 cup roughly chopped walnuts 6 cups mixed greens 1 large apple, core removed and thinly sliced 6 ounces Arla Dofino Gouda cheese, cut into cubes 1 cup cooked farro 1/3 cup dried cranberries For the apple cider vinaigrette – 1/4 cup olive oil 1-1/2 Tablespoons apple cider vinegar 2 teaspoons honey 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1 teaspoon minced shallot Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste Directions First, toast the walnuts in a small skillet over medium heat, stirring frequently. Cook until the walnuts turn brown and smell toasted. This will take about 5 minutes. Transfer to a small bowl to cool. Place the greens in a large bowl. Top with sliced apples, Gouda cheese cubes, farro, dried cranberries and toasted walnuts. To make the vinaigrette Whisk together the olive oil, apple cider vinegar, honey, mustard and shallot. Season with salt and black pepper, to taste. Drizzle the salad with the vinaigrette and gently toss. Serve. Note: Honeycrisp or Granny Smith apples are great options, but any apple variety will work. Tips to protect yourself from cybercrime during holiday travel

The period between Thanksgiving and New Year’s is among the busiest travel times of the year. In 2014, more than 98 million traveled over the holiday period, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. These busy, unassuming travelers could be a hacker’s ideal target, as more than half of respondents in a 2015 The Travelers Companies survey say they rarely take precautions, like changing online banking or financial account passwords regularly. “Cybercrime can be at an all-time high during the holiday season, especially as busy consumers move from place to place and don’t take the same precautions with their portable devices that they might normally have at home,” says Dr. Kenneth L. Williams, Ph.D., cyber expert and professor in the College of Engineering & Information Sciences at DeVry University. “Ill-informed travelers are a hacker’s ideal target, so travelers must be accountable for their own protection.” With travel booking on mobile devices becoming increasingly popular, and travelers’ near-constant smart phone use on the road, the threat continues to rise. More than 16 million mobile devices in circulation are infected with some form of malware, a 25 percent increase over the past two years, according to telecoms infrastructure firm Alcatel-Lucent. The high number of malware infections is often is due to a gap in knowledge on how consumers can protect themselves from a cyber criminal’s

attack. Dr. Williams offers these tips for travelers to protect themselves from cybercrime this holiday season: Use personal hotspots. Do not use public Wi-Fi networks as these can be a landmine for cyber hackers. Instead, opt to use your phone or tablet’s personal hotspot. Be mindful on public networks. Don’t share credit card information over hotel networks, like on-demand menus or hotel services, since these systems are easy for hackers to access. Shutdown wireless services you aren’t using. Shut down wireless services, like Bluetooth, if you do not need them. Don’t leave your devices unattended. Protect your devices like cash when you’re in public places like hotels and resorts; thieves and hackers always go where the money is. Charge with Caution. While convenient, avoid charging your mobile devices from a computer or charging station you do not control, like at an airport terminal. “In today’s economy, no one is safe in any irregular circumstance when it comes to their cyber activity,” says Dr. Williams. “New and seasoned travelers alike need to take a step back and notice the new opportunities cyber criminals now have to steal their data.” To avoid being a statistic as one of the 4,000 cyber-attacks that happen each day, holiday travels must take the right precautions to protect their personal data this (BPT) holiday season.
