Welcome to

Our Town! T

he Village of Union Grove and the greater area that includes the towns of Yorkville, Dover/Kansasville and Raymond is what we call “Our Town.” While a growing community, we work hard to maintain that small-town charm we’re known for. No matter where you are, you’re within minutes of shopping, restaurants, local activities and more. This is a close-knit community and we think of each other as neighbors, whether we live a few blocks or a few miles down the road. That feeling of connectedness is reflected in the area’s service organizations, local governments, schools and our commitment to community. As our local events show, we love to celebrate. From the annual Fourth of

July Parade to our summer block party and street dance to the Main Street Car Show, to the popular Fall Festival complete with pumpkin chucking. There’s almost always something fun and interesting going on. Union Grove also plays host to the Racine County Fair with the fairgrounds downtown. Every summer we welcome exhibitors and guests from all over the state to our small town. Winter doesn’t stop the fun, either, with the Chamber of Commerce’s Christmas celebration setting the tone for the season the first Saturday in December. There’s always something to do no matter what time of the year. We invite you to come for a visit and find out what’s so special about Our Town. We hope to see you around!

How it all began

UNION GROVE OUR TOWN 2015

he history of Union Grove extends back to 1838, when John E. Dunham came from the east and purchased 80 acres of land, on which he built the village’s first house and barn. His homestead was located in what is now downtown Union Grove, where the Chartier Hotel once stood a block or so from the railroad tracks. Here are some Union Grove historical highlights: • In 1846, the first “union” school house was built, bringing together students from a number of outlying school districts. • Gov. Dodge then named the village by combining the school’s name, “Union” with “grove,” for the beautiful grove of burr oak trees he found on the west side of Highway 45. • The first church in Union Grove was organized six years after the Sunday school started. On June 1, 1893, the Rev. Frank Dexter and his wife, the Rev. Mabel Dexter, served the Union Grove Congregational Church. • The first brick school was built in 1882, with its west wing added sometime during the 1890s. In the 1920s, that building became the Union Grove Masonic Temple. • On July 14, 1902, the Old Settlers Society incorporated and purchased a 12-

4

acre park, aptly known as Old Settlers Park to this day. It is adjacent to the Racine County Fairgrounds along Highway 11. The park features numerous chainsaw sculptures of people, produce – even a bottle of milk – in honor of the area’s past and present. • The State Bank of Union Grove incorporated in 1903, and built a structure on the east side of Main Street. • One year later, on June 24, 1904, fire destroyed a number of Union Grove establishments, including the Commercial Hotel, Myers Opera House and Weiler’s Saloon. Long-distance phone service came to the area in 1906, when the Union Grove Telephone Company contracted with the Wisconsin Telephone Company to bring long distance to each patron. • Union Grove found itself in a pickle – figuratively speaking, of course – in 1910, when Meeter’s Kraut Factory was built. G.R. “Bob” Cornell was the plant manager. The factory produced sauerkraut as well as pickles and tomatoes. • Union Grove faced its most disastrous fires when the downtown burned on Friday, March 24, 1916. Eleven of the village’s most important and centrally located businesses on the west side of Main Street were destroyed. • In 1917, the Racine-Kenosha Joint

County Training School for Teachers was established in Union Grove. By 1920, enrollment in teacher training was 34 – but by 1922, the school burned. • The Union Grove Graded School was built on 14th Avenue in 1925, where it still stands today. • In 1928, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hackett came to Union Grove and began publishing the Union Grove Sun. • Ernie Swantz purchased the hardware store in the 1100 block of Main Street in 1936. The store offered hardware, wood heating stoves and kerosene. • On Dec. 8, 1941, when World War II was declared, the village organized for civil defense emergencies. Six months later, a group of women were appointed to distribute ration books that allotted each person a certain amount of sugar, meat, fats and oils. • The same year – 1942 – the rescue squad formed. • Immediately following the War, in 198, the showroom of Martin’s ChryslerPlymouth-Dodge was enlarged to accommodate the post-War new car sales. • An addition to the high school was built in 1949, and additions to the Graded School were built in 1950.

The Village of Union Grove has a long and rich history that began back in 1838 when John E. Dunham came from the east and purchased 80 acres of land, on which he built the village’s first house and barn. SUBMITTED PHOTO Our Town

Shepherds College grads make wedding plans BY

young man and woman meet at college, become best friends, fall in love and get engaged – sounds like a pretty typical love story. And for Kyle Engdahl, Oak Creek, and Gloria Pavuk, Union Grove, that is exactly how it happened. However, their relationship poses unique challenges they are working through together, in anticipation of their October wedding. Gloria and Kyle, both age 25, are graduates of Shepherds College in Union Grove. Gloria graduated in 2011, Kyle in 2012. Shepherds College is the country’s leading three-year, post-secondary school for students with intellectual disabilities. The couple became friends during Gloria’s third and final year of college. “We were both student leaders of small groups – we were paired together,” she said. And, both agree, they quickly became best friends. Even after Gloria graduated, and Kyle still had another year at Shepherds, the friendship stayed strong. “I graduated but he still had my back – like a best friend would,” she said. Gloria works as a baker at the Country Rose Bakery and Cafe, Yorkville, where she also held an internship while at Shepherds College. She also works part time at the Olive Garden Restaurant in Racine. Kyle works at Lucas-Milhaupt, Inc., a metal fabricator in Cudahy. He does cleaning, packaging and anything inbetween. He’s been there nearly three years and is proud to say he just got a raise.

Kyle said his grandpa worked at the company for many years, a connection that was helpful in his getting a job there. Kyle lives in Oak Creek with his grandparents, who raised him since he was an infant. It was during the summer of 2012 when Kyle called Gloria’s dad, Mark Pavuk, who lives in New Jersey, to ask for Gloria’s hand in marriage. He gladly obliged, and

according to Kyle, said: “If she’s happy, I’m happy.” Kyle’s plan was to propose to Gloria that December, at Christmas time. But he picked a Tuesday in November instead. “I didn’t want to wait ’cause I was so in love!” Kyle explained. He took Gloria to

When they’re not working at their jobs, Gloria and Kyle are working on wedding plans. They already have a church and a pastor and are currently going through premarital counseling. They’ve booked a reception hall, disc jockey and a photographer, and Gloria has picked out her dress. They’re still working on flowers, the cake and honeymoon plans. They plan to have just under 100 guests. Gloria and Kyle have both picked who will be in their wedding party. Gloria will have her two sisters and two friends beside her, and Kyle’s groomsmen will include his brother-inlaw, a cousin and two friends. Gloria and Kyle said both their families have given them their full support, and are helping to pay for and plan the wedding and reception. Once they are married, Gloria said their families will be visiting often to make sure things are going well. “We will need emotional and financial support,” Gloria said. But it’s easy to see these best friends look forward to spending their lives together. “She’s my soul mate – I want to wake up to my best friend each day,” Kyle said.

History of Raymond Community Church

In 1840, a small group of pioneers met in the Walter W. Shumway home in the Town of Raymond, then called Mt. Pleasant, and organized the Mt. Pleasant Congregational Church, adopting the Articles of Faith and Covenant of the Aubridge Church of Massachusetts. These Christian pioneers were Amarylla and Walter W. Shumway, Susan and Leonard Upham, and Betsy and Daniel McPherson. The church’s name changed to Raymond Congregational in honor of one of its members, Alvin Raymond, son of Elisha Raymond, earliest settler in the Town of Raymond. The name was then changed to Raymond United Church of Christ upon the merger of the Congregational Christian and the Evangelical and Reformed Churches to become the United Church of Christ. Daniel McPherson, a farmer and member of the group, was ordained to the ministry on Dec. 9, 1840, and was the first minister

ne of Racine County’s oldest rural congregations, Raymond Community Church, celebrated its 175th anniversary on March 12, 2015. A service with special music performed by Jeanne Demjen, Gerry Drought, Raymond Community Church choir and Sunday school children, communion, video presentation of history up to the present time and rededication of the building and members took place on March 22, followed by a celebratory lunch. “We have a saying in our church that God is still speaking,” said Rev. Manda Stack. “Our job is to listen and respond. We believe that God was speaking when early settlers gathered in March 1840 to form the church that is today known as Raymond Community Church, United Church of Christ. “God was speaking when church members gathered by the Root River for baptisms. God was speaking and the church responded to needs in our community and wider world, touching countless lives. God has been speaking through the years as we’ve been growing in faith and serving in love. Our 175th anniversary is an occasion to not only look back in gratitude but to

Enjoy this portion of Dead Frogs Don’t Jump: Conversations with the Master You have now arrived at constancy. Constancy, sir? Once a parent, always a parent. Open house events Public night open house events are held monthly from April through October and there is no charge for admission or parking. As a non-profit organization that is volunteer run, the observatory encourages a small donation to help us defray the yearly costs of observatory maintenance and care. Families are welcome at these events, but young children need to be supervised as the grounds are not illuminated for better observing. Children should also be instructed to respect the telescope equipment provided by our members. Questions from visitors are expected and welcomed, since part of the Racine Astronomical Society’s mission is to educate and inspire amateur astronomy. The night of an open house there will be a message on the observatory answering machine if the skies are cloudy. The 2015 open house events are: • Spring Astronomy Day, Saturday,

One of the gems in Union Grove is the Modine Benstead Observatory, 112 63rd Drive. The facility has two domed observatories. The main building includes the 16-inch telescope, an observation deck, library and meeting room. The smaller domed building houses our 14inch telescope. The observatory’s main instrument is a custom designed 16-inch NewtonianCassegrain reflecting telescope. The mirror was figured at Kitt Peak Observatory. The telescope was designed and built by club members and local industries. The telescope is mounted on a custom German equatorial mount. Attached to the main telescope is a 6-inch refractor, which is used as a guide scope. A 5-inch astrograph refractor can also be attached to the telescope. The smaller domed building houses a 14-inch Celestron Schmitt Cassegrain reflecting telescope. The telescope is mounted on a Lomansdy German equatorial mount.

UGUHS Band Director Alex Vincer was assisted Saturday by Haley Peronto as the Color Guard instructor. Katrina Hermann served as Drum Major and the Color Guard captains were Cally Hansen and Stephanie Phillips. “I believe that marching band is a terrific activity for everyone involved,” Vincer said afterward. “It encourages students to always think about themselves and their actions in a team setting, and allows them to express themselves musically

and artistically for a large audience.” The UGUHS marching band program strives to instill the values of dedication, responsibility, pride and teamwork in every student’s pursuit of musical and artistic excellence, Vincer added. “I am proud to say that this mission is evident in every single student’s performance on the football field this season, ” Vincer said. Members of the band include: • Horn Line: Heather
