Storm no match for teamwork of competitors on hand
The 50th anniversary of the Wisconsin State Waterski tournament started out with a bit of excitement from Mother Nature when a strong wind storm hit the tournament site late in the afternoon July 21, nearly destroyed the venue, according to members of the local team. Dozens of trees were uprooted, portal-potties turned over, tents toppled and the judges stand

– including an 800-pound metal stairway – were all upended in the wind/rain storm. “For those of you that were there when the storm hit Thursday afternoon, you know the devastation that the storm caused. I am not only impressed, but also so very proud of the way that people from all teams came together and pitched in to help the (Wisconsin Rapids) Aqua Skiers clean up the mess and helped
rebuild the site to make it as good as new,” Chris Coupland of the Wisconsin Water Ski Federation, said. “…Not only did we start on time, but there were barely any signs left of the damage the storm brought the day before. It was a true testament to the hard work and dedication of so many dedicated volunteers. I am proud and thankful to be involved in an organization that contains so
many caring and incredible people,” Coupland added. The tournament, held on Lake Wazeecha in Wisconsin Rapids, went on without a hitch. “Thankfully no one was injured and all teams came together as one to begin immediate cleanup of the debris and the water ski shows went on as planned for the weekend,” Tammy Tomomitsu said. The competition, including
The
23 teams, was divided into three categories typically based on a team’s size. The Minneiska Ski Team, with a total of 60 members ranging in age from 9 to 71, earned enough points to secure a second place victory at the tournament in Division 3. But that’s not where the accolades ended for the local team.

Minneiska members Brandon Schleicher and Lawton Lohff won the most original/ unique act award for the second year in a row. “They did this with Brandon’s amazing wake board skills, flipping and flying over the jump, and then ending with a bomb out bare foot run,” Tomomitsu said. Wisconsin’s overall top female skier for 2016 went to Minneiska’s very own Susi Schleicher, who also earned the award in 2010. “Susi was awarded this for her multiple talents on the water including: centering the teams four-high pyramid; basing a three-high pyramid; swiveling; trick skiing; team ballet line; and the 360 around the boat act,” she said. The final highlight of the tournament was the construction of an all-team pyramid comprised of at least one member from every team that competed in this 50th milestone
event. “Hunter Abramson, 15, proudly represented Minnieska in the pyramid. This was especially meaningful after seeing how all these different teams pulled together after the storm to make sure the tournament and the ski shows were able to perform,” Tomomitsu said. In addition to ski performers, she said the team is comprised of boat drivers and riders, safety people, stage and sound crews. “There is something for everyone to do. Ask any ski member how you can get involved,” she said. The ski team’s final performance of the season on Whitewater Lake at Scenic Ridge Campground, W7991 R&W Townline Road, will be at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 6 p.m. For more information, visit www. whitewaterskiteam.org.

Sable House founder shares its history By Tom Ganser CORRESPONDENT
Dan Sable provided members of the Whitewater Rotary Club with a history of “Sable House” at the July 19 meeting at 841 Brewhouse. A resident of Whitewater for more than 50 years and a retired biology professor from the University of WisconsinWhitewater, Dan and his wife, Jean, a recovering alcoholic who died in 2008, founded the Sable House in 1989 as a not-for-profit safe and sober location for people recovering from alcoholism or other forms of substance abuse. Dan credits Jean with the idea of founding the house. Jean also wrote a one-act play called “One Mother’s Story” to tell the true story of her family’s experience with resisting the effects of drug and alcohol abuse. She performed in the play, including performances in Japan. The proceeds from the play performances went directly to help fund Sable House. Sable House is in the former Starin Mansion at 131 N. Fremont St. in Whitewater. The house was built in 1856 for civil engineer and land speculator Frederick Starin, a prominent figure in the history of Whitewater. With a smile and a familiar twinkle in his eyes, Dan said that in the 1840s Starin’s wife, Jane, had no interest in living in Whitewater because it had only one store, but by the 1850s, the presence of three stores helped change her mind. Originally a two-story cream brick house, the Starin house became much larger when a

mansard roof was added to a third story, making a fourth floor ballroom. It was also used for housing of UWW students for many years. Dan told Rotarians the Sable House has 73 steps “from the tunnel and secret room in the basement to the ghosts and bats in the attic.” Sable House began as a 90day treatment program. As an
agency of the United Way of Jefferson County and northern Walworth County starting in the early 1990s, Dan said the current program offers transitional housing for four people, is a site for four Alcoholics Anonymous meetings a week and offers “sober social activities” on all major holidays, as well as a bit of education and a liberal drop-in policy.

Police give insight to Fairhaven residents By Heather Ruenz STAFF WRITER
Part of Brian Robinson’s job, he said, is to keep the residents at Fairhaven engaged and in tune with the local community and he recently found a way to take that engagement to a new level, by teaming up with the Whitewater Police Department. “Ever since I started my job and reached out to Chief (Lisa) Otterbacher, she and the staff have been a pleasure to work with and extremely accommodating to Fairhaven,” Robinson, Leisure Services Director at Fairhaven, said. About a year ago, Robinson said he and Officer Bill Oliver began talking about setting up a citizen’s police academy for seniors at
Fairhaven. Once the sessions began – in June – the attendance is testament to the interest level by those at Fairhaven. “On average we had around 25 residents attend each presentation with topics including: drugs, fraud, the K-9 unit and Officer Boomer, being an extra set of eyes and ending with a show-and-tell of police equipment,” Robinson said. For those that attended all three of the presentations at Fairhaven, they were invited for a tour of the Police Department and received a certificate of completion of the Whitewater Senior Citizens Police Academy. “My role was simply to provide a tour of the department and present the certificates of course completion. It was great meeting
all of the participants. They had a lot of great questions during the tour,” Meyer said. Fairhaven residents also gave positive feedback on the academy. Don Ellerman said he enjoyed the “excellent presentations, especially Boomer.” Ellerman said he didn’t realize how a dog like Boomer is trained and the amount of continuous training that takes place within the department. Gloria Weigandt said the experience “made me realize how much more
demanding and complex and dangerous law enforcement is today than it formerly was.” Betty Schoonover said by following the news, people have a good idea of what the job of police officers consists of, but she noted it’s “very dangerous and yet must be rewarding,” adding that it must be extra challenging in a college town with the increase in drug problems. “I was shocked at the increase in the variety of drugs they have to keep up with,” she said.
