FOR THE RECORD FOUR OUT OF FIVE? REMEMBER THAT ONE?

Do you remember those old commercials that said “four out of five dentists recommend sugarless gum for their patients who chew gum?” That’s actually great advice – although we always wondered exactly what the fifth dentist recommended! But here’s another statistic that’s actually much more important. Four out of five adults over the age of 35 have some form of gum disease! That’s pretty scary isn’t it? Gum disease (or as we call is “periodontal disease”) occurs when bacteria in the mouth cause the gum tissues to become inflamed and infected. And since our mouths are already loaded with bacteria (including healthy strains), periodontal disease is quite common. As it gets more severe, gum disease will cause the tissues surrounding the teeth to become red and puffy, and they may bleed easily. The infection may progress to where it actually starts to eat away at the bone that holds the teeth in place! That’s why gum disease is the #1 cause of tooth loss in adults – more than cavities, accidents, or anything else! To make matters worse it causes horribly bad breath! In its early stages, gum disease can only be detected by the team of dental professionals. That’s why we sometimes call it “the silent killer”. You also may have heard of recent studies that suggest gum disease is linked with heart disease, diabetes, low birth weights, and many other threatening health conditions. There is good news! In most cases gum disease can be successfully treated right in our dental office without the need for a gum specialist or surgery. Of course it will take some work on your part (you knew it was coming – proper brushing and flossing), but the path to treatment begins with your dentist and dental hygienist. If you are in need of or overdue for your dental exam and cleaning, don’t wait – call now! We will perform a thorough check of your gums to make sure they are healthy. Don’t worry and don’t delay – we are here to help you save your teeth!

Any questions? At Rockton Dental Care your health and comfort come first! Feel free to give us a call at 815-624-2626 to schedule an appointment or to discuss any dental health matters

On Jan. 7, at about 10:50 p.m., members of the Rockford Specialized Community Oriented Police Enforcement team (SCOPE) were on patrol in the area of Arbor Court and 15th Avenue when they observed a Chevrolet Impala disobey a stop sign. Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle but the driver did not stop. As the driver turned north onto 11th street from 15th Avenue, his path was blocked by an on-coming train. The driver then turned west onto 11th Avenue where he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a snow embankment, where the Impala became disabled. Officers were able to make contact with the driver, who was identified as 31-year-old Rockford resident, Dontrail Givens. Officers located a handgun inside the vehicle. Further inspection of the firearm revealed that the serial number had been defaced. Officers also learned that Givens was wanted on two warrants; one for

Domestic Battery and one for Retail Theft. Givens was taken into custody without further incident. Givens was charged with the following offenses: Stop Sign Violation, Aggravated Fleeing to Elude, Driving With a Suspended/Revoked Driver’s License, Resisting/Obstructing Police, Aggravated DUI, Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon, No FOID Card, Criminal Defacement of a Firearm, Domestic Battery Warrant, and Rockford Warrant for Retail Theft. Givens was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for his injuries. Upon his release from the hospital, he was transported to the Winnebago County Jail. This is an on-going investigation. No further information is available at this time. The charges against Givens are merely accusations. He is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

What to do when the phone acts up? Research and eat candy! aming a song on the radio. Snapchat? Nope. I don’t even Instagram. And a 4K headset for VR? Uh, no. I’ve sampled some Virtual Reality things like roller coasters and skydiving, and as crazy fun as they may be (more fun watching others bobbing and weaving and swatting at air), I still am a relic that prefers the real experience. Nothing can truly take your breath away, literally, like jumping out of a plane except jumping out of plane. For storage options for smartphones, this blurb is from a blog post on androidcentral.com: “To put it in less nerdy terms, that means the space taken up by the OS on a Nougat-shipping phone could be double that of a comparable model on Marshmallow.” Marshmallow? I don’t know what sugary sweet my phone is running on. Caramel? Dark chocolate? Snickerdoodle? The other thing I use my phone for is to take photos, of course. I read the best phone for pictures is the Google Pixel. I do not know its storage space (or its partitions) or what sweet treat it’s powered by. Hmmm. All this research has me hankering for a snack.

I imagine the phone can do a gazillion things that I do not know or have forgotten. Maybe it’s time for that tutorial I promised myself I would do when I got the thing. Let’s see. Here’s the specs, OS: Kit Kat. My operating system is KitKat! I used to love Kit Kats! I think that’s a sign I

A couple more clicks and I see all kinds of Note4s - my phone - for sale on eBay, new and used, and not cheap. So maybe this phone is still “cool”. Folks are selling them for almost three hundred bucks. Maybe I just need to see why my phone is shutting itself off and locking up. Maybe it needs a new battery? Could it be that simple? I originally got this phone because of the S Pen. I like to take notes by hand and my son thought I could get used to jotting right on the phone. I think I’ve done that twice. I have recently recalled that the phone does have the ability to have more than one window going at the same time. I can be on the phone chatting and look up a phone number for someone without having to hang up and text the number to them. Magic!

Vacation foibles

We’d been looking forward to the week for months. We planned and packed and prepared to play. The months of waiting became weeks, the weeks became days and then it was here: vacation! Seven days of perfectly choreographed bliss. Or maybe not. Our trip took us on a journey to visit the world’s most famous Mickey. It’s one of our favorite destinations because it’s a place where grown adults wear silly looking mouse ears on their heads while dining on oversized, overpriced turkey legs and no one thinks that’s weird. Oh, and there are the rides and attractions. Most vacations include a hiccup or two. Ours had several. The problems started before we ever got to the parks. We ordered brightly colored matching T-shirts to commemorate our vacation. I forgot to mention, families wearing silly matching T-shirts are also the norm at Disney. Except our T-shirts didn’t arrive until the day after we left so we never got the chance to take a dorky group photo to post on Facebook. There’s always next year. We arrived at our rental home and prepped to hit the parks hard the next morning. I set my alarm for 6:30, which is much earlier than any family should ever have to wake up when on vacation. All hail the mouse. Before bed, I went to brush my teeth and encountered a mysterious and scary situation. My pink travel toothbrush was already wet. I was vacationing with my husband, three sons, daughter and son-in-law. My daughter had her own bathroom and toothbrush. While perhaps a bit sexist, it seemed obvious that the pink toothbrush would belong to the mom. Apparently not. A wet brush doesn’t lie. I did what I usually do when confronted with a mysterious and scary situation. I quizzed the brothers. “What color is your toothbrush?” I asked. “Pink,” said one who shall not be named to save him from embarrassment. Luckily I had a spare brush. I’m a seasoned mom. A spare brush goes with the territory. Despite my responsible alarm setting, we overslept the next morning.

My phone is acting up. If it is indeed time to upgrade (I have the Samsung Note4), I am clueless and rely on others to steer me. This time I thought I would do a little research on my own before I asked our sons for guidance. I thought I could at least appear to be up to speed. Wrong. “Phones with Nougat out of the box need more space for duplicate partitions.” That was the first sentence I read when I googled an article for 2017 devices. Nougat? Yum! I didn’t know that my phone innards were labeled like confections and I don’t know about single partitions, let alone duplicate ones. I am picturing an office of tiny cubicles inside my phone. Thanks, tiny worker bees in there! The only sentence I understood explained that I should buy a phone with 64 gigs of storage instead of 32. Why? Well, because size matters. Or something like that. Probably not to me though. I don’t stream and I rarely surf. I use my phone for old-fashioned things like texting, looking up the hours to Home Depot, and Shaz-

That’s because I’d set it for p.m. instead of a.m. We scrambled to get out the door and managed to be just 15 minutes off our goal time. “We can do this,” my husband said. He’s the biggest kid in the bunch. The roads in Florida are plastered with purple signs telling you where to turn and which way to go in order to reach the park of your choice. We managed to get lost in the maze of purple signs. The boys found the correct route on their phones and blurted directions from the back seat. My husband gripped the steering wheel, the stress showing just a wee bit in his white knuckles. After a few rights and a couple of lefts, we managed to reach our magical destination, just minutes before the park opened. We exited the vehicle and ran to the gates. Most of us made it through the bag checkers and metal detectors without a hitch, but my husband (lucky guy that he is) got chosen for extra security screening. This caused him to scowl and delayed our entire party by at least 30 seconds. We ran (I jogged) to the ride of choice and prepared to wait in line. It’s what you do at the parks. A woman in a red dress cut through the queue in order to catch up with her party. We let her past and watched her progress. She got to a spot where all that separated her from them was a railing, which she hopped over without further ado. Her dress flew up and we all saw what none of us wanted to see. She wore a red dress – and nothing more. After the viewing, our day was rather ho-hum, and by that I mean filled with great rides and fun-filled family times. That, and a lot of walking. We left the magic tired, spent and fulfilled – until we realized we’d violated a primary rule of the parks. You’ve got to remember where you park. To our credit, we knew which lot we were in, but not which row. Imagine seven weary park-goers walking up and down the immense expanse of asphalt looking for a nondescript crossover vehicle in a sea of nondescript crossover vehicles. By some miracle, the same son who thought his toothbrush was pink found our car, and we didn’t even get lost on way back to our rental house. I’m happy to report that after that we turned the corner on our trip hiccups. Except for the day the son with the pink toothbrush actually got the hiccups, the rest of the week was nearly flawless and for the next six days we went on to make our vacation great again. Which is all that anyone can ask for. Especially a princess who wears mouse ears instead of a crown.
