National Guard extends testing deployment The National Guard has extended its deployment to continue offering COVID-19 testing at Blackhawk Technical College in Janesville through March 10, officials announced last week. The free community testing is available from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays at the college’s central campus, 6004 S. County Highway G. People should enter the testing site using the U.S. Highway 51 entrance to the campus. Pre-registration is strongly recommended but people may register themselves on-site if necessary. To register, go online to register.covidconnect.wi.gov. “This is a drive-thru testing site and anyone getting tested must stay in their vehicle,” a news release said. “A nasal swab will be used to collect a sample by a uniformed member of the Wisconsin National Guard.” A Spanish-language interpreter will be available for those who don’t speak English. About 650 tests will be administered per day and the testing site will close for the day once 650 tests have been given. Testing will not take place on Dec. 24 or Dec. 31. The first day of testing in 2021 will be Wednesday, Jan. 6. Testing is open to anyone age 5 and older, but especially encouraged for those experiencing symptoms. COVID-19 symptoms include: • Cough • Fatigue • Sudden loss of taste/smell • Shortness of breath
• Sore throat • Congestion or runny nose • Fever • Muscle pain • Nausea or vomiting
• Chills • Headache • Diarrhea “We continue to closely monitor the impacts of COVID-19 and pro-

Jeremy Pinnow & Associates Inc. in Brodhead recently made a $1,000 donation to the fund used to support Brodhead School District students who do not have proper clothing for winter weather. Pinnow, third from left, presents the check to Albrecht Elementary School Principal Dave Novy. Brodhead Superintendent Lenny Lueck and Jeremy Pinnow & Associates staff members Melissa McNeece and Amy Harding also were on hand for the presentation. “Many children in our district do not have adequate winter apparel such as coats, boots, gloves and snow pants,” according to a news release. “This year, the need for these essential items has drastically increased.” People may donate to help provide winter clothing by sending a donation to the school district and specifying it for the “district school supply account.”

Start new year with a hike The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is joining with America’s state parks to encourage the First Day Hike program on New Year’s Day. “Hiking is a great way to explore the outdoors, remain physically fit and have a chance to relax and unwind,” Diane Brusoe, DNR Fish, Wildlife and Parks deputy division administrator, said in a news release. “Start the year out right with a hike at a Wisconsin State Park.” The latest issue of Wisconsin Natural Resources magazine highlights several state properties around Wisconsin that are perfect for winter hiking and snowshoeing. Due to COVID-19, the First Day Hike will be a self-guided experience to help keep guides and park visitors healthy and safe. Hikers are encouraged to share their adventures by using the hashtags #OutWiGo and #FirstDayHike. For those looking to enjoy Wisconsin state parks in a different light, the DNR encourages visitors to hike under a full moon or with a headlamp or flashlight instead of attending the annual candlelight events held at night, which have been canceled to avoid attracting crowds. To help slow the spread of COVID-19, people are encouraged to hike at properties within their communities with people from their household and practice social distancing. A vehicle admission sticker is required to visit state park system properties. Stickers may be purchased online, by calling 888305-0398 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at individual properties via selfregistration stations, electronic kiosks or drive-up window service (select properties only). For more information about Wisconsin state parks, go online to dnr. wisconsin.gov.

Cookies and other treats seem to be everywhere this time of year, but officials at the Wisconsin Dental Association are advising people to watch what they eat and to stay vigilant about brushing and flossing routines.
• Never use your teeth as a tool. When it comes to all the packages to open, bottles to uncork and nuts to crack, use the right tools for the job — and your teeth aren’t one of them. Over time, using your teeth for these tasks can weaken your enamel and fragile tooth edges, which can lead to cracks and breaks. • Snack smart. Hard candies and cookies are just some of the sticky and starchy treats you’re sure to encounter each year. It’s important to avoid overdoing these kinds of snacks, as they tend to stay on teeth longer than most other foods. While most things are fine in moderation, it helps to eat these foods during or shortly after a meal when saliva production is high and helps wash food particles away. Holidays or not, it’s always a great time to start thinking about healthier habits. Try implementing healthy options — like cheese, fruits and vegetables — into your
snacking. You’ll be doing a service for your teeth and the rest of your body, as well. • Don’t delay treatment. If you’re scheduled for an appointment during the holidays, honor it and don’t wait to make your oral health your New Year’s resolution. It’s better to catch and fix problems now rather than potentially allow them to worsen by postponing treatment. If you’re overdue for a cleaning or need work done, don’t use the busyness of the holidays as an excuse – call your dentist today to schedule your next visit. If traveling and in need of emergency care, don’t hesitate to contact a local dental office. Practicing good dental care is important not only for maintaining a healthy mouth, but for overall wellness and quality of life. For more information about oral health, go online to www.Mouth Healthy.org.

Holiday feasting and fun not only does a number on your waistline, but it can also take a toll on your teeth, according to officials at the Wisconsin Dental Association. “No matter the time of year – your oral health should always be a priority,” WDA President Dr. Paula Crum, said in a news release. “With all the festivities and indulgences that come with the holidays, it can be easy to get carried away and neglect your teeth. Many don’t take into consideration all the extra sugary foods and drinks they’re consuming. “Brushing and flossing regularly, even after meals, and setting snacking limitations for yourself can go a long way toward improving your overall health and carrying a healthy smile into the new year.” The WDA offers these tips for keeping your mouth and teeth healthy this holiday season: • Keep your routine. The holiday season is filled with plenty of hustle and bustle that can easily throw you off your oral health care routine. It’s also a time for sweet treats and starchy foods — which can lead to plaque buildup and tooth decay — so it is important to brush for two minutes at least twice a day, and floss once each day. If you’re traveling and want to keep good habits on the go, pack a toothbrush and small tube of toothpaste to use after meals. If brushing isn’t an option, chewing sugar-free gum is a great alternative that helps to clean debris from your teeth. • Limit alcohol intake. There are a number of ways that alcohol can damage your teeth, so it’s important to choose what and how much you consumer. Sugar-heavy beverages, like some wines, fuel harmful bacteria in your mouth and can be a major risk factor in tooth decay. Dehydration, a common side effect of alcohol consumption, can produce the same damaging outcome by decreasing saliva flow and allowing bacteria to cling to enamel. If enjoying a few drinks in your festivities, alternate your alcohol with a glass of water to keep your mouth rinsed and hydrated.

District, health officials continue monitoring as classes go online until Sept. 18
Green County public health officials reported Monday that seven Brodhead High School students have tested positive for COVID-19. The school district immediately implemented a full virtual plan
for the high school, to last through Sept. 18, according to a post on the district’s Facebook page. The Brodhead School District was made aware of a student gathering that occurred the weekend be-
fore school started and later learned that one high school student had tested positive as of Sept. 4, according to the health department news release. “The district completed contact tracing and sent home approximately 25 students that were considered to be close contacts at school,” the release said. “The district was also able to identify several students that had been in attendance at the student gathering and these students were sent home as well.” Since then, several more students who had attended the gathering have tested positive, prompting the health department to identify the situation as an outbreak, the release said. The high school was to undergo a deep cleaning Sept. 8 and Sept. 9,
Brodhead Superintendent Leonard Lueck said in the news release. “The school board will be discussing their next steps at the September 9th board meeting,” Lueck said. “The Green County Public Health Department is working with Brodhead School District leadership and staff to conduct a thorough investigation to track, trace and contain the virus,” said RoAnn Warden, health officer. “We want to assure the community, students and staff of Brodhead High School, and their family members, that extra steps are being taken to protect students and staff to minimize the spread of COVID-19.” According to the release, “Investigation of an outbreak of
COVID-19 in any setting involves the same basic public health principles: detection of cases, isolation of ill persons, contact tracing, quarantine of cases and close contacts, laboratory testing and infection control measures in the setting to prevent additional transmission.” Public health and school district staff members remain in daily communication. “Additionally, surveillance for ill students or staff are being tracked by the schools and reported regularly to public health,” the release said. “School and public health staff are working together to identify close contacts, notifying close contacts of their potential exposure, and asking them to quarantine.”

Free COVID-19 testing will be available for anyone 5 years of age and older. Individuals who need to be tested are asked to register online prior to getting tested. This is to ensure a smooth and efficient process for everyone, according to a health department news release. Testing will be available while supplies last at the drive-thru sites, which are at the Monroe National Guard Armory, the former Brodhead Fitness Center and the Swiss Center of North America in New Glarus. Anyone 5 to 17 years old must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian authorized to give consent for the COVID-19 test on their behalf. People who can be tested at their doctor’s office are encouraged to do so, the release said. To register for testing, people are asked to follow these steps: • Pre-register for your test as

Symptoms may appear two to 14 days after exposure to the virus. • Individuals who have been in close contact (within 6 feet for about 15 minutes) with a person with COVID-19, regardless of symptoms • Individuals without symptoms who have been instructed by public health or a health care provider to get a COVID-19 test for the purpose of preventing the spread of infection. Brodhead High School senior Kaitlyn Welsh is turning to the local community to help children and families in Haiti. As her senior project, Welsh is organizing the Walk for Family on Saturday, Sept. 26. The two-mile walk will begin at 9 a.m. at the start of the Sugar River Trail in Brodhead. Community members also may opt to participate by taking their own walking route and collecting donations for the cause, Welsh said in a news release. The walk will raise money for One Gift, One Child, a ministry of former Brodhead residents Natalie and Pierre Charlotin. Natalie Charlotin is a Brodhead graduate. “One Gift, One Child serves to prevent orphans and reunite families in the impoverished country of Haiti,” the news release said. “As a ministry, it provides orphaned children, or those put in orphanages by their families, safety from abuse, poverty, rejection, slavery, trafficking and hatred. “Their end goal is to provide every child a safe environment and eventual reunion with their family. If they do not have a family, they are placed into a foster home that allows them a safe, loving environment to grow up in.” To receive a Walk for Family sponsor sheet or get more information, send an email to Welsh at welshkai@ brodhead.k12.wi.us. Sponsor sheets and monetary donations will be collected on or before Sept. 26 and presented to the Charlotins for One Gift, One Child.

Walk set for Sept. 26
In the 16th century in northern Europe, after the reformation, the stories and traditions about St. Nicholas became unpopular. But someone had to deliver presents to children at Christmas, so in the UK, particularly in England, he became Father Christmas or Old Man Christmas, an old character from stories and plays during the middle ages in the UK and parts of northern Europe. In France, he was then known as Père Nöel. In some countries, including parts of Austria and Germany, the present giver became the Christkind, a golden-haired baby, with wings, who symbolizes the newborn baby Jesus. In the early USA his name was Kris Kringle (from the Christkind). Later, Dutch settlers in the USA took the old stories of St. Nicholas with them and Kris Kringle and St. Nicholas became Sinterklaas, or as we now say Santa Claus. Many countries, especially ones in Eu-
rope, celebrate St. Nicholas Day on Dec. 6. In the Netherlands and some other European countries, children leave clogs or shoes out on Dec. 5 (St. Nicholas Eve) to be filled with presents. They also believe that if they leave some hay and carrots in their shoes for Sinterklaas’s horse, they will be left some sweets. St. Nicholas became popular again in the Victorian era when writers, poets and artists rediscovered the old stories. In 1823, the famous poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas” or “‘T’was the Night before Christmas” was published. Dr. Clement Clarke Moore later claimed that he had written it for his children. (Some scholars now believe that it was actually written by Henry Livingston, Jr., who was a distant relative of Dr. Moore’s wife.) The poem describes St. Nicholas with eight reindeer and gives them their names. They became really well known in the song “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” written in 1949. Do you know all eight names?
Alliant Energy provides holiday food boxes
A $100,000 donation from Alliant Energy is being using to deliver 2,000 food boxes to families across 14 communities in Wisconsin and Iowa. “This year has been difficult for many families, and we want to do all we can to help, especially during the holiday season,” said Julie Bauer, executive director of the Alliant Energy Foundation. “On behalf of Alliant Energy and our employees, we’re proud to provide meals from our families to yours. Guided by our purpose-driven strategy to serve customers and build stronger communities, we are partnerBY THE COURT: ing with local organizations to help DATE SIGNED: fight hunger.” December 14, 2020 Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Electronically signed by more people are visiting food pan-
tries for the first time. According to Feeding America, more than 80 percent of food banks nationwide are serving more people than last year. In Wisconsin, Alliant Energy’s partnership with Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin provides 1,000 food boxes to families. Alliant Energy purchased the food while Second Harvest packed the food boxes and coordinated the delivery to seven food pantries, including Caritas in Beloit. In addition to the food boxes, families are receiving a gift certificate to purchase meat from a local grocery store. In both Wisconsin and Iowa, the food boxes include items for a hol-
iday meal such as potatoes, turkey gravy, canned vegetables, cranberry sauce and ingredients for sugar cookies. The boxes also contain shelf-stable food, including macaroni and cheese and cereal. Overall, nearly 90,000 pounds of food was provided. As part of Alliant Energy’s continued effort to fight hunger and support communities, the company also recently announced its annual Drive Out Hunger event generated $385,000 to supply more than 1 million meals for local families. Alliant Energy provides electric service in Albany and electric and gas service in Orfordville. For more information about Alliant Energy’s Foundation, visit www. alliantenergy.com/foundation.

Engineering a super sleigh Brodhead Middle School seventh-graders recently worked on a Santa’s sleigh challenge. Whether virtually or in the classroom, they were given the task to create more than one prototype of a sleigh for Santa. Their sleigh may not be more than 25 centimeters, and it must have a spot for Santa and his presents. Some students tested which weight is best. Some tested different runners for the sleigh. Determining the best protection for Santa and the gifts is another option. Students were able to choose what they wanted to test. SUBMITTED PHOTOS Brodhead Independent-Register
