Throughout the year, both parishes have undertaken various charitable works and promoted evangelization and educational and spiritual outreaches to inspire everyone to live

their faith and to act on the Corporal Works of Mercy. ers since 1995. Ambitious and community-minded, they serve the area with their involvement in the FFA, hoof-trimming, real-estate, nursing, and now by continuing to offer southern Wisconsin a family-owned, local shop to purchase feed. “We grew up as farmers. We’ve always managed a lot,” Janell said. Before the family took over the business, they owned the building, and when Junior, the previous owner, fell ill, they did not want their community to fall prey to big business. “This is old school, Mom-and-Pop relationships. We offer advice and remove the hassle for people,” Jeb said. Their time spent on the farm around animals has taught them what each breed requires in terms of nutri-

tion, and they pride themselves on being able to meet each customers’ needs with the availability of custom mixes of feed. The decision to take over the business was quick—with ownership being switched and the shop operational within one week. “It’s an opportunity for growth in a different area,” Janell said. Since their opening, the store has maintained the core value of serving the community, and the couple has increased inventory and uphold their promise of being able to serve every customer’s needs to satisfaction. The business is very much a family-oriented establishment. “Someone from our family is here at all times during open hours,” Janell said. Jeb’s

father, Mike, plays many important roles by assisting with in-door sales and delivery tasks. The younger McMahon boys, Grant (15) and Noah (17), are constantly milling about, willing and able to assist their parents maintain the business. The McMahons attempt to run their new business with values they believe are important to community growth; they keep supplies near the farms, where they are needed. “For me, it doesn’t matter whether I’m nursing or here. I’m taking care of people in the best way I possibly can,” Janell said. J’s feed is located at 721 Genesis Drive in Orfordville and is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.

Letter to the Editor

My name is Peder Johanson. In addition to serving this community as pastor to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, I have the pleasure and privilege to serve as a member of Better Brodhead. Our coalition is comprised of citizens representing various sectors of our shared community and works toward a vision we can all agree is worthy of our efforts: a community where everyone is valued and safe. I was part of the initial group and conversations that brought this coalition together, and it is with great satisfaction and gratitude that I continue to support our work in the community. The hope that we can be a community where everyone is valued and safe is of profound importance for me as a Christian minister and as a citizen. No one should ever feel alone in their suffering or struggling with abuse of any kind with substances or within relationships. A lot of what we do falls into the work of prevention. You may have seen some of our printed materials or received information at one of our public events (we host community suppers, forums, and other learning opportunities) and you may wonder how our coalition works together. Our funding comes from a generous federal grant from

the Drug Free Communities (DFC) Support Program. The greatest resource for the coalition, however, is the people. We are generously gifted with energetic, dedicated, and compassionate members of this community. As I mentioned above, we are comprised of such citizens from across the community (schools, business, parents, law enforcement, faith community, etc.), and by bringing those various perspectives together at one table with a common goal, we find that we can do so much more together than any of us could do alone. I write this first to thank you all for the support given to our coalition. We would not have been awarded our grant if not for the strong partnerships we have already enjoyed. Secondly, I ask you to consider what more you might be able and willing to do with Better Brodhead. Whether you are interested in taking a place at “our table” or helping from time to time with particular projects, we would love to welcome you into the coalition! Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 17, at 6:30 p.m. We would love to see you there! For more information, you may email Brielle Powers at brielle.betterbrodhead@gmail.com

Friedrich, 39, of Brodhead, reported that she was eastbound on State Highway 11 when a westbound truck crossed the center line and sideswiped her vehicle. Friedrich reported that she was not injured and was wearing her seatbelt. The airbags did not deploy

The purpose of Christmas By Pastor Russ Doebler LIVING WORD

During this week between holidays, I thought I could sneak in a few more comments about Christmas before we take down the tree and resume dieting. Now that most of the celebrating is subsiding and life is returning to normal, it’s a good time to reflect on—not just the meaning of Christmas (you hear that every year)—but on the purpose of Christmas. Because that continues beyond the holiday. We all know Christmas isn’t supposed to be about Santa and gifts. We don’t need to be reminded of the materialistic secularization of Christmas. And we know it’s more than a serene nativity scene. It’s about the Savior who came to the world. But how he came to the world is what I’d like to draw your attention to. The Christmas story is a birthing story. Every mom has a birthing story. Some are funny, some scary. If Mary was having a coffee with other moms who didn’t know her story, she would share how she gave birth unexpectedly while out of town. In a barn. And was visited by two groups of strangers who wanted to worship her baby. And, oh yeah, she was a virgin when the baby was born. The story is outside the bounds of human logic or imagination. The birth of Jesus set in motion a new movement in knowing God, which we call Christianity. The story of Christianity is also a birthing story. According to John’s Gospel, every follower of Jesus is born again. So all true followers of Jesus have a birthing story describing how they came to life-changing faith in Christ. The birth of a child is a helpful word-picture to describe new life in Christ. Conception is the result of

a relationship between a man and woman. There is a time of development before the baby is born. Birth is a crisis moment. It is a noticeable event. The spiritual parallels are that spiritual birth also begins with a relationship—between a person and God. But just like not every encounter between husband and wife results in pregnancy, not every encounter between a person and God produces new birth. For example, you can go to church, say prayers, read the Bible, even get baptized, but the Scripture itself doesn’t teach that being born again comes from any of these encounters, as important as they all are. God’s desire is that interaction with Him conceives new life that changes everything. In Mary’s case, there was a literal conception that resulted in a literal birth. For the rest of us, God wants to relate to us in such a way that His word is conceived in us and produces a new birth inside us. To be reborn, we must leave our old lives, thinking, and habits for new lives. Sadly, not every church-going person makes it out of the womb. They may be very religious, but there was never a crisis moment, like a birth, that resulted in a new life. Pregnancy cannot continue indefinitely or the life will be lost. Have you had that crisis moment where you have left the confining womb of the world around us and asked God to give you a fresh start? Has your religious experience become so routine it’s stale and lifeless? The purpose of Christmas is that God’s Son was born into the world so that we might be born into the kingdom of God. A new year is a great time for new birth. Why not reach out to God now and ask him to give you a new life?
