Author signing at Read Between the Lynes By Anne Eickstadt CORRESPONDENT
On Wednesday, December 28, Susan Mullen, co-author of “We Are Still Tornadoes,” visited Between the Lynes independent bookstore in Woodstock for a book signing. Arlene Lynes went to school with Mullen’s co-author Michael Kun. Kun is an attorney and published author of several novels. He could not be at the signing due to his legal responsibilities in California. “Michael and I met in our first year of law school. He was outside class one day, looking dejected. I stopped to ask him why. He told me about a friend who had lost a loved one. ‘I’m a writer,’ he said. ‘I’m supposed to be good with words and I failed. I didn’t know what to say.’ That incident helped solidify our friendship.” “I haven’t always wanted to write. Michael thought it would be a stronger story if a female wrote the girl’s letters. We are both attorneys. We are both married. I live in Virginia and Michael lives in California. We sent the manuscript back and forth. The book took three years to write.” “If I received an email, even at work, I would open it. I would print out the last eight or nine letters to refresh my memory of their current events. At lunch, I would read them over to see if I needed to ask about friends and other people. I would try to figure out how to progress the story forward in a believable way in writing the reply.” “We scripted a couple of plot points but the story just came along. It ended in a different way than we expected it to. The editor felt very strongly about a crisp, clear ending. We had left it fairly open-ended.” “It’s a unique experience and I am enjoying it for what it is. People ask me how to get a first novel published. I tell them, ‘write it with a published author.’ I have a few ideas about writing my own novel but it would be a far greater endeavor.” “The book is placed in the school year of 1982-83. Cath goes off to college. Scott stays home and works in his father’s clothing store while trying to get his band off the ground. The 1980s was one of the last time periods when people actually wrote letters. Texting and emailing just doesn’t have the same feeling.” “Kirkus Reviews has listed the book as a historical novel. We did reference actual events and researched what the weather was on any particular day.” “The music in the story was very natural to us. We grew up with it. There were some songs I really wanted to use in the book. I would be heartbroken to find out that they were not written until after the end of the story so I had to find other songs instead.” “My daughter and her boyfriend have read the book and it has inspired them to pledge to write letters at least once a week. In the future they will have a record of their relationship.” Read Between the Lynes bookstore holds children’s storytimes on Tuesdays and Saturdays at 10:30 am. They also have three book clubs which meet regularly. To find out more about their upcoming events, visit them online at www.readbetweenthelynes.com or visit them on Facebook

Gingerbread Creation Contest 2016 By Anne Eickstadt CORRESPONDENT
The Downtown Crystal Lake area businesses have once again put their creative baker hats on in behalf of the Salvation Army. Participating businesses in Downtown Crystal Lake created their own Gingerbread Creation to display at their business near a countertop Salvation Army Red kettle. The public was invited to view the various Business Gingerbread Creations. Every dollar deposited in the corresponding Red Kettle became one vote. The business that collected the most money through Christmas Eve will become the winner of the Business Gingerbread Creation contest for 2016. In reality, the real “winner” is The Salvation Army and all the people they serve in our community. Over the past five years, Downtown Crystal Lake has raised nearly
$10,000. All money raised stays local. 2016 Participating Businesses: Benedicts La Strata, 40 N. Williams Crystal Lake Bank & Trust, 70 N. Williams Crystal Lake Natural Health Care, 30 N. Illinois State Police highlight new 2017 laws The new year brings new laws, and the Illinois State Police (ISP) would like to highlight a few that beame effective Jan. 1, 2017. In an effort to protect first responders, Scott’s Law, the “Move Over” law, requires that motorists slow down or change lanes when approaching a stationary emergency vehicle with emergency lights activated. Beginning in 2017 this law will also apply to any vehicle on the side of the road with hazard lights activated. If you see flashing lights ahead, please move over or slow down. When entering a work or school zone, you need to eliminate distractions and make sure you are driving at the posted speed limit. If you decide to speed through a work or school zone after the first of the year, you may end up in jail. Speeding 26 miles per hour or more, but less than 35 miles per hour, is now a Class B misdemeanor, and 35 miles per hour or more in excess of the posted work or
school zone speed limit is now a Class A misdemeanor. If you have been convicted of driving without insurance and you still choose to drive without insurance, your vehicle could be impounded the next time you’re stopped by the police. The law now requires officers to tow your vehicle if you have been convicted of driving without insurance within the prior 12 months and you are receiving another citation for driving without insurance. “The new year usually brings new resolutions and goals,” stated ISP Director Leo P. Schmitz. In 2017 the ISP resolves to continue to work towards strengthening safe driving habits for motorists on Illinois roadways. Our goal is to reduce serious traffic crashes through education and enforcement,” he continued. These are only a few of the new laws that have been enacted for 2017. For a complete list of all the new Public Acts, please go to the Illinois General Assembly web site.
McHenry County Animal Control to conduct lowcost rabies vaccination, microchip clinic Jan. 25 Your pet has a better chance of being reunited with your family if it has a microchip for quick identification and a current rabies vaccination/registration record. McHenry County Animal Control & Adoption Center (MCAC) will host a low-cost rabies vaccination and microchip clinic for McHenry County Residents January 2017, at its Crystal Lake facility, 100 N Virginia St. (intersection of Woodstock Street and Route 14). All pets must be leashed or in carriers. Please do not bring animals that are in heat. Appointments are necessary and can be made by calling MCAC at (815) 459-6222. The
clinic is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 25, from 3 to 5 p.m. Rabies vaccinations are $10 for one year or $25 for three years. Registration tags are required by law; registration fees are separate and required at the time of the rabies vaccination. Discounts for senior residents apply and for pets who have been previously spayed or neutered. Microchips are $15. There is no cure for rabies, and it is almost always fatal. Rabies vaccinations provide your pet with the best protection against this disease. Unlike dog tags and collars which can fall off or be removed, micro-
chips are a more permanent form of pet identification. Animal microchips are about the size of a grain of rice and are typically implanted just beneath the surface of the skin between the shoulder blades. The process is similar to receiving a vaccination through a needle. Adoptions ($80) will also be available. All adoptions include ageappropriate vaccinations, spay/neuter, FELV & FIV testing, microchip, heartworm and a free first Veterinarian visit at participating veterinarians. To view available pets, visit http://www.petfinder.com/

We do anything for the home: custom furniture, window treatments, in home consultations and more.” At Out of the Box, the creation on display is a framework of white bread surrounding a spice jar of ginger. Owner Mary Batson tells me, “I saw it on Facebook a couple of years ago. The past few years we have had a big fancy gingerbread house. This year we went simple.” “We have gotten more comments on this one than on all the others. We have already filled one Salvation Army kettle and had to get a second one. It has been a really fun conversation thing. It puts a smile on people’s faces. The Crystal Lake Bank & Trust is also a regular participant in the Gingerbread Creation Contest. This year’s entry is a North Pole train with Kit Kat tracks, and a load of gold coins and peppermint stick logs. Mary Behrens, owner of Kitchen Outfitters, says, “My sister Colleen came up with the idea. ‘You’re a kitchen store so people can sit around the kitchen table and eat.’ She made all of the little things out of fondant. One way we can help each other get through these challenging times is to keep our dollars local. Here are three good reasons. Reason #1: Shopping locally saves you gas and wear and tear on your vehicle. Reason #2: When you spend your money locally, you support the businesses whose property taxes pay for our municipal services. Reason #3: Many of our youth programs are supported and sponsored by local businesses and if we don’t support them, they can’t support our kids. BROUGHT TO YOU BY:

Glendale Heights Officer Mike Huff, State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) and Police K-9 Orkan pose for a picture before Roll Call on Wednesday, Dec. 21.
Tom Cullerton protects police K-9 Units K-9 Orkan and Glendale Heights Officer Mike Huff are like family. Every night, Orkan goes with Huff to the home he shares with his wife and two kids. State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) passed the Police Dog Retirement Act, to guarantee Orkan will remain part of the Huff family for years to come. Cullerton’s law, Senate Bill 3129, requiring a retiring police dog to be offered to the primary handler of the dog, will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2017. “Our family dog, Brenna, is a part of our family. I understand there is a special bond between an officer and their dog,” Cullerton said. “It’s important that we honor this relationship.” If the officer doesn’t wish to keep the dog it can be offered to another officer or employee, a nonprofit organization or a no-kill animal shelter. Police dogs, similar to Orkan, serve local police departments by helping search for drugs and explosives, aiding in searches for lost people, looking for crime
scene evidence, and protecting officers. Police dogs must remember several hand and verbal commands. Orkan is a three-and-a-half-year-old German Shephard that started his training with Huff in September of 2014. The police dog is a dual-purpose canine for the police department; he is performs drug searches as well as aiding in search-and-rescue missions. In Orkan’s free time he loves tennis balls, playing fetch and taking long walks throughout Huff’s neighborhood. His tennis ball addiction is fed by donations from local tennis clubs. Cullerton believes this is not only a way to honor the service of Illinois police officers but also a costeffective way to give police K-9’s a safe and responsible home. “I’m happy to pass a law to not only honor the service of our communities’ police officers but also honors the relationship between a family and their dog,” Cullerton said.
