ClayWorkers’ Guild Christmas Display 2016 By Anne Eickstadt CORRESPONDENT

One of the most artistic and popular displays of its kind, the ClayWorkers’ Guild Holiday Art Pottery Sale has been a popular shopping destination for the past 10 years. The CWG annual sale is located in the Old Courthouse Arts Center on the historic Woodstock Square. Members of the ClayWorkers’ Guild of Illinois join together every November and December to offer beautifully handcrafted, artisan works of ceramic art for both display and everyday use. You can surround your home with art and use it in your everyday lives. There are fifteen CWG Illinois members on display this year for the Annual Holiday Sale. “You can’t find that anywhere else,” says Ben Rosenfield of Frog Hollow Pottery. “We are already at double the sales this year. People see and understand that they can use art in their lives every day. There are a lot of accomplished artists that are new to the guild. Some of these clay workers are people that you would have to go to Chicago or elsewhere to see.” Clay workers on display at the Holiday Sale this year include: Susan Clough, Susan Galloway, Cyndi Hicks, Jill Munger, Frank Richards, Ben Rosenfield, Patricia Volkammer, Hironobu Nishitateno, Marylou Mateja, Mary Paul Garland, John Garland, Socoyro ‘Coco’ Medina, Ann Marie Whitmore Lenzini, Jim Losh, and Lena Wells. The day I visited the display, it was being attended by Ben Rosenfield and Jill Unger. Between them, they told me a great deal about each of the artists participating in the Holiday Sale. Here is a very little of what I

The McHenry County Fairground hosted the ‘Homemade for the Holidays’ Holiday Faire on Saturday and Sunday, December 10 – 11. More than thirty small business vendors set up booths to offer unique hand-crafted items to customers. The vendors were happy to talk about their businesses. Here are a few: Ohana Farms: The word ‘ohana’ means ‘family in Hawaiian. Four family members are directly involved in the daily workings at Ohana Farms and they treat their customers like ‘ohana’. Sue Czanda (the C is silent) says, “We are family owned and we grow native shade trees and ornamental shrubs. We make all our own sale product.” – 3511 Millstream Road, Marengo, IL, www.ohana-farms.com R & R Critter Creations with Robin Sifuentes and Rick Polson: “She makes them, I sell them,” says Polson. “Robin’s been making these for twenty-five years. She is the only one who makes this design. The horses have three basic themes – sports, colleges, and cartoon characters. The giraffe is a more neutral fabric. She has twenty grandchildren. These animals are kid tested and mother approved.” They can be on Facebook at Robin Rene’e Clark Sifuentes. Perennial Sunshine Glassworks: “On our honeymoon, we went on a cruise and visited Jewel Gardens in Alaska. They have gardens with a glass studio. We did blown glass,” says Lisa-Beth Patzke-Lovero. “Three months after that,” Scott Lovero says, “We were in Door County and visited the Hands On Art Studio. That was that, we were hooked.” “We got a kiln and we started doing glass ourselves,”

• CLAYWORKERS heard: Jill Munger was one of only two students at McHenry County College chosen to have pottery items placed on display in Springfield, Illinois for a year. Marylou Mateja is a sculptor whose pottery animals are so lifelike that children will come up to pet the rabbit and the crow. Ann Marie Whitmore makes beautiful impressions in her pottery pieces by pressing antique lace into the clay. “You can make a family heirloom by asking her to use a piece of your great-grandmother’s antique lace. The lace will be fine. Different pieces of lace will make different designs,” Munger tells me. Susan Galloway of Blue Eagle Ceramics started the Clay Working program at McHenry County College. Hironobu ‘Nishi’ Nishitateno was born and raised in Japan. He has a degree in economics and studied pottery at the Kagoshima Technical Arts Center. He immigrated to the United States and established Nanten Pottery in Illinois. He has been selected to contribute pieces to national ex-

hibitions and has been honored with several awards of ‘Best in Show’ and ‘First Place in Ceramics.’ Ben Rosenfield grew up in Pleasant Ridge outside of Cincinnati, Ohio. “My grandmother was known for her baking. You will find baking items such as mixing spoons, bowls and sugar frogs in my work.” I learned much more about each of the artists displaying their work. “We’re not going to favor any artist over another,” Rosenfield tells me. A number of artists have brought different cultural influences such as German, Japanese, Mexican, Scottish/Irish, into their work. You can learn more about these artists and bring their artwork into your everyday life or give items as gifts at the Clayworker’s Guild of Illinois Annual Holiday Sale. The display will be open daily until January 7, from 11:00 am until 5:00 pm, Saturdays from 10:00 am – 7:00 pm and Sundays 10:00 am until 5:00 pm. The show will be closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. www.clayworkersguild.com or on Facebook at Clayworkers’ Guild of ANNE EICKSTADT PHOTOS Illinois. Lisa-Beth tells me. “We did not take any classes. We made a few mistakes – pieces blowing up in the kiln or things ‘slid’ and came out looking Picasso-ish. We now have two kilns.” “The hardest part is not opening the kiln to peek in at it,” says Scott. “We hope someday to have a storefront and teach classes.” www.perennialsunshine.com Grace Farm Studios and HolliBerri Icelandics shared a booth: “I bought my small flock of Icelandic sheep from Holly. My flock is in Woodstock. Holly is a member of the Icelandic Sheep Breeders of America. She can trace her pedigreed sheep to bloodlines in Iceland. Icelandic sheep have only been in the United States for thirty-five years,” says Ann Chaney. Holly Marks says, “I raise my sheep for meat and fleece.” “I harvest my sheep for fleece,” says Chaney. “I can spin and crochet. My specialty is felt.” She points to a couple of pieces in her booth. “The giraffe and the trees are needle felt. The caribou is leather appliqued onto felt. Everything is 100% locally produced and hand crafted.” “Core spun yarn is wool wrapped around a core of yarn so you get an unspun look. It is usually used for rugs and home décor. It is durable and long-lasting so it can be used in rugs, pillows, baskets, cat beds and the like. It showcases the qualities of Icelandic sheep – durable and longlasting.” www.gracefarmstudios.com “I prefer Icelandic sheep because they are smart,” says Marks. “It’s like having kindergartners, you can teach them anything. Sheepdogs do not work with Icelandic sheep. The dogs give them ‘the look’ and the sheep think, “We’re bigger” and give them ‘the look’ right back.” HolliBerri Icelandics can be found on Facebook.

The McHenry County Fairground assembled a good variety of vendors selling, breads, cookies and treats, sauces, home décor, glassware, can-

dles, jewelry and more. Then they added Santa Claus and a storytelling hayride. All in all, it created a very enjoyable experience.

Huntley Police Department recognizes 4 members By Samantha Fetzner REPORTER

Four separate members of the Huntley Police Department have received recognition for their services with the department in the last two weeks. Three of the four were officers whom were given life-saving awards in the form of medals for actions they took to save a person’s life in the course of duty. The fourth member, a Sergeant, was recognized for dedication and 15 years of service in the department, holding a variety of different positions during that time. The life-saving awards were given to officers at the Dec. 8 Huntley Village Board meeting. Two of those officers, Officer Kummer and Officer Cirks, were given the award for a call they responded on together pertaining to an unresponsive adolescent. The third officer, Officer Greene, was awarded the medal for responding to a call where the victim was experiencing a heart attack. In both instances, which both took place in the summer, the ac-

tions taken by responding officers directly correlated to the lives of the victims being saved. They were able to respond effectively and take the proper precautions until appropriate medical personnel arrived on scene. The medals were presented to each officer independently by Chief Porter during the meeting. On Dec. 15, Huntley Police Department also recognized and celebrated Sergeant Linda Hooten. Hooten has been a member of the department since 2001 and has served the Huntley community for the last 15 years. In her time, she has held numerous titles. Hooten served as both a patrol officer and a school officer, coordinator of domestic violence, and an advocate for victims and witnesses relating to cases in the department. Hooten received an award from the department and was featured on the Department’s social media page in recognition of her time and continued service to the community. Congratulations to all four members of the Huntley Police Department for their achievements!
