Oh topiary, oh topiary, how lovely are thy branches

Each year at about this time I find myself face to face with an issue. It has to do with one aspect of the holidays. In two words – the tree. I can’t get behind the idea of the tree and my lack of spirit makes me feel downright Grinchy. I don’t want to have a tiny, shrunken heart. I want to participate in the magic and miracles of the season. I want to drink eggnog. I want to be enthused about a tree in my living room. I really do. But I’m not. Something must be wrong with me. I can see the magic of the season in other aspects. I love shopping for gifts. I love the Christmas story and holiday music. I love family get-togethers and the abundance of festive food and goodies that make the season bright. But I’m not feeling the need to hug a tree (metaphorically speaking). Everyone around me is giddy with tree glee. They can’t wait for the big tree buying day to get here. They have traditions about when and where to get the best tree. About decorating it while singing carols and eating homemade cookies. About who puts the star on top and who gets to be the first to plug

This year, I thought I’d take a preemptive and creative approach to the issue. I decided we’d have a By tree that isn’t quite a tree – exactly. JILL I got the idea from Pinterest. PERTLER Contributor Instead of a tree, we’re going to have a topiary. I’m making it myself. My project started with an in the lights. They all delight in the upside-down tomato cage. starting a new tradition.” They weren’t convinced. They seldom are when I have one of my creative inspirations. Still, I refuse to let them damper my topiary spirit. And, by Dec. 25, bet I’ll have them singing new words to the traditional carol, “Oh topiary, oh topiary, how lovely are thy branches.” Jill Pertler is an award-winning syndicated columnist, published playwright, author and member of the National Society of Newspaper Columnists. In my opinion

Columnist stands corrected. Virtual Reality is worth exploring

As an editor, I often find myself reading exactly what I need to hear. Be it authors who are health coaches reminding me to drink more water and move my body, to spiritual gurus reminding me to stay in touch with my practices that keep me grounded and centered, to motivational speakers reminding me that refusing to learn new technology will make me old, I am fed by my work. It is ironic that I recently wrote a column about virtual reality headsets and my resistance to these new waves of fun. Because that is exactly what the new technology is - fun. And I don’t want to grow old so I best be embracing it. My elder son brought over his new VR headset, and we had a blast. I walked among the streams and waterfalls and watched the birds take flight. Then I was copilot with Chewbacca (call me Han Solo) facing down the DeathStar. Then I was swimming with sharks. Intense and crazy. You do feel immersed in the experience. You reach out and try to touch. You duck your head. You scream. And you will too. Equally as fun as being in the virtual reality experience yourself is watching others strap on the headset and headphones. The bobbing and weaving, the swatting in the air, and the exclamations (and sometimes expletives) are a hoot. We had a family gathering recently and three generations took their turn flying in space or riding a roller coaster. Watching each person was extremely entertaining. So I stand corrected. I do not shun new tech experiences, and I welcome VR. Everything has its place. Strolling in Paris in my living room is okay by me. I’m still old school in many ways and pretty ignorant and clueless about much technology, but I rely on my phone for all kinds of uses that even just a few years ago were

science fiction. And yet, I still see my dinosaur-ish tendencies. My sons do their banking with their phones. They don’t go to a bank to deposit a check; they take a picture of it. I cannot bring myself to do that. Sort of like when my dad had no need to go get an ATM card. Sometimes we are forced to get on board with new ways of doing things. Sometimes it happens, and we don’t even notice how wonderful it is. I remember thinking RedBox was a brilliant way to get a Friday night flick and now I don’t leave the house to click through hundreds of movies choices. I take it for granted that any device can hook up to the wireless printer. I take it for granted that we have a wireless printer. I take it for granted that the word “device” is a normal household term. I can charge my devices on the plane and I can use them, with internet, in the clouds. Heady stuff. What I wrote a couple weeks ago about saying no to VR is now updated. I still want a balance of old and new, and to embrace it all and all the in-between. We will continue to go where no man has gone before. I may not go boldly and I may not be the first, but I’ll go. I will be an old dog who learns new tricks. And still plays a good old-fashioned game of chase my tail sometimes too. Kelly Epperson invites your comments at info@kellyepperson. com. look. A couple others followed him – another feat not often accomplished. They hadn’t been this interested in my activities since the time I made homemade chocolate chip cookies two years ago. They surrounded the tomato cage, scrutinizing its every leaf. “It’s not done yet,” I said. “It’s going to look great.” “But it’s not a tree,” the youngest said. “Of course it’s not,” I said. “It’s a topiary!” “Who’s ever heard of a Christmas topiary?” he asked. “You have now,” I said. “We’re
