To get the best results for your fine hair, consult your trusted stylist on tips for the volume you desire.

Fine hair usually has no movement, can be hard to manage, often looks limp, and lacks body. The hair is finer in texture than average and harder to deal with without using the right products. On the other hand, too much product can add weight to your hair, which results in a flattening effect after you’ve spent ample time styling it.

styling tips for

fine hair

BY MONA HARB, CURLY HAIR EXPERT, LOFTY BOUTIQUE SALON & SPA

washing You want to wash your hair as soon as it gets oily. However, just because it is less tolerant of skipping washes than thicker hair, that doesn’t mean you need to wash it every day. It will depend on what types of products you use and how you treat your hair. Before washing your hair, gently massage your scalp, which will increase blood flow and help to begin the exfoliation of your pores that may hold excess oil.

conditioning You may not need conditioning after every shampoo. When you condition, try conditioning the ends of your hair while avoiding the roots.

post-washing DRY YOUR HAIR UPSIDE DOWN TO GIVE YOURSELF MAXIMUM VOLUME.

THE

Cut

The key to getting the best look for your fine hair is getting the right haircut performed by a skilled stylist. Having the right shape for your hair type and texture, while also complementing your facial features, is essential. If you don’t have the right shape for your hair, nothing short of a miracle and a pound of lacquer will keep it in place. Another way to give fine hair a fuller look is through heavy highlights to give the illusion of volume. Since fine hair can be completely straight to very curly, choose a stylist who is aware of these differences as well as how to give you fuller looking hair through the cut. Once you have the right cut, get the best look every day with these fine hair care tips.

After your shower, gently blot your hair dry with an old t-shirt. This is gentler than a towel. It all starts with how you dry your hair. Use a warm or cool hair dryer setting with a concentrator to focus the air. You should use your fingers until your hair is 90 perecent dry, then use a soft bristle brush. Dry your hair upside down to give yourself maximum volume. After your hair is dry, flip your head over again and brush your hair completely through.

hair products With fine hair, you want to limit products but that doesn’t mean you need to avoid them. Try strategic use of hairspray to hold hair in place. You can also use a volumizing dry shampoo or a sea salt spray instead of hairspray. Try applying these products to the ends of your hair while avoiding the roots to avoid weighing down your do.

Total Gum Health Creates a Long-Lasting, Beautiful Smile Hollywood stars know the power of a beautiful smile. Celebrities seem to have perfect teeth, but just like the rest of us, many of them have had a little help from their dentist and in many stars, their periodontist too. If periodontal tooth and gum issues are not treated before buying beautiful cosmetic dentistry, you may be wasting your time and your money. Periodontal health is the foundation of a healthy smile and can make the money you spend on beautiful teeth last many more years.

Your smile can help make new friends, close a business deal, cheer up a broken heart and ensure that other people feel good about you. How you feel about your smile, directly relates to how much you actually use it. Do you like your smile? If not, you may be missing out on a beautiful and healthy smile that will give you the self-confidence you deserve. It goes one step further – healthy teeth and gums are the foundation of a healthy body – as your oral health directly impacts your body health and wellness. Advanced dentistry and good periodontal (gum) care can help you achieve the ultimate show-

stopping smile. Dental implants will give you back your smile with natural looking and fully functional teeth that best replace your own. Gum grafting can reduce a “gummy smile” to show more of your teeth and open up your beautiful smile. Laser treatments that utilize less invasive procedures can control and eliminate periodontal bacteria to help save your natural teeth and gums. An experienced periodontist can provide you with countless options for improving your smile and keeping your gums and teeth healthy for life. Are You Missing Teeth? The effect of a missing tooth is not only devastating to your smile, but it’s detrimental to your long-term oral and medical health. It’s not just about unsightly gaps; people missing teeth lose supportive gum tissue and the bone that surrounds other teeth, and eventually the supporting bone in the jaw begins to dissolve. Studies show that people with all their teeth can live, on average, 10 years longer than people with missing teeth. Having gaps where teeth are missing affects the way the jaw closes as the remaining teeth begin to tilt and drift into the gaps. Food can become trapped in these spaces, increasing the risk of decay and gum disease. The tilting and drifting can also cause problems for the opposing teeth as your bite becomes off-balance and you may begin to experience jaw and joint problems. Without the support of your teeth and facial bones, your face will begin to look prematurely aged. Lost teeth affect what you eat, how you swallow, process food, and how you speak and function. The good news is that an experienced periodontist has the advanced training beyond their

regular dental degree to prevent, diagnose and treat periodontal (gum) disease with the most advanced laser therapy to help keep your smile healthy and beautiful. A periodontist can also offer personalized solutions to replace your missing teeth, repair your damaged gums, and prevent or rebuild bone that may have been lost. Your teeth provide much more function than just the ability to chew. They are necessary for the health of the gum and jaw tissues as they provide a strong foundation for a truly beautiful smile. Take control of your dental health. Make an appointment for a complete periodontal evaluation with an experienced periodontist today.

The Microcannula Technique Injectable Facial Fillers Without Bruising As a natural part of the aging process, we lose bone and soft tissues throughout the face and body. This process, combined with the effects of gravity, commonly leads to deepening wrinkles, sagging skin, and an increasingly gaunt countenance. Injectable dermal fillers offer an excellent non-surgical treatment to reverse these effects and restore a fresh, youthful appearance, and they are one of our most requested services. of hyaluronic acid, a gel-like substance that is naturally found throughout the human body. The hyaluronic acid molecule is too large to penetrate the surface of the skin, but when injected under the skin it can be used to lift, plump, and restore the smooth contours of the face and hands. Hyaluronic gels are available in various consistencies, each used for a specific purpose. For example, a robust filler is needed to sculpt

To ensure that our patients receive gentle dermal filler treatments and natural-looking results, we use the advanced microcannula technique, a delicate procedure that is customized for each patient. Here are some of the most frequent subjects we discuss when considering treatment: What are dermal fillers? The most commonlyused dermal fillers are made

the midface, whereas a softer, creamier filler is needed for the lip and eye areas. Which areas do you treat with dermal fillers? We use dermal fillers primarily for restoration of midface volume, eye rejuvenation, softening of smile and marionette lines, sculpting of the nose, chin, and jaw, lip augmentation, treatment of wrinkles, and hand rejuvenation. In all of these treatment areas, the experience and technique of the injector are paramount. Product selection, the amount used, placement, and injection technique all affect the final result. Good work produces a rejuvenation that is natural and refreshed without looking artificial. Why do you prefer the microcannula technique? The microcannula technique involves the use of a thin, flexible tube that gently pushes blood vessels and nerves to the side as it travels through the treatment area. This technique involves only one insertion site per area, and it allows the injector to follow the natural architecture of the face with precision. Prior to the procedure, the insertion site is numbed with anesthetic, and most patients feel little to no discomfort during the treatment. Tissues are lifted evenly without lumps, and with skillful cannula use the bruising rate drops to nearly zero, in contrast to a rate of nearly 60 percent when the injections are done with needles. Mastering this technique requires training and experience, but the benefits to the patient are well worth the extra effort. How long will the results last? The effects of hyaluronic acid fillers generally last between 12 – 18 months, depending on several factors: the type of filler, the amount used, the treatment

area, and how the body processes the filler over time. Most of our patients prefer hyaluronic acid fillers because of the naturallooking effects they provide, as well as the fact that the amount and placement of the fillers can be adjusted to match the treatment areas as one ages. If you are considering dermal filler treatments and would like to learn more, we encourage you to visit our office for a complimentary consultation. To schedule your appointment, please call us at 703-992-7979. We see patients from Monday through Saturday of most weeks, and we look forward to meeting you!

How to Prevent and Treat “Turkey Neck” As we age, and let’s face it, we all are, our body goes through changes both inside and out. Our skin is the largest organ of the body making it the biggest telltale sign of all.

also when underlying platysmal muscles start to detach and loosen, their edges showing through thinning skin as vertical bands from the chin to collarbone. Hence giving us what is commonly referred to as, “Turkey Neck”. You can hide your turkey neck with scarves and turtlenecks, but why not treat it, too? The colder seasons are the perfect time to give some much-needed extra attention to this area! At New Image Plastic Surgery, Dr. Roberta Gartside offers both surgical and nonsurgical options to prevent and treat Turkey Neck.

One of the most forgotten yet the noticeable areas that show signs of aging is our neck. Factors like genetics, extreme weight loss, collagen and elastin breakdown, and sun exposure can affect how your neck ages. Thin, weak, and delicate skin

and muscle cover the neck. Year after year, twisting, stretching, and the pull of gravity and any pockets of subcutaneous fat have a cumulative aging effect. Most people notice neck skin beginning to significantly sag and wrinkle around the age of 40. That’s

Kybella – This injectable is formulated to eliminate fat, specifically under the chin. It uses deoxycholic acid to break down fat cells, so your body can remove them for long-term, naturallooking improvement. Botox (Dysport, Xeomin) – In the hands of an expert, Botox injections can be effectively used to relax the platysmal bands, softening their appearance. ThermiTight – Stimulates new collagen production, helping firm and plump up skin using radio frequency heat. SkinPen – Uses micro-needling, which directly addresses the texture and firmness of the delicate skin of the neck. Microneedling works by creating hundreds of microscopic channels into the dermis to stimulate your skin’s natural production of new collagen and elastin. Neck lift – Removes excess, sagging skin, normally by pulling it upward to an incision behind the ears. A neck lift is commonly performed with a lower face lift, because the neck and lower face share muscle and skin structures. Liposuction – Helps chisel the neckline by surgically extracting extra fat in hard-to-reach pockets under the chin and along the neck.

Chin implant – Augmenting the chin can often help fill loose skin, reducing a wattle and upper-neck sagging. It’s a fast procedure. It places a custom-shaped implant, fitted to your unique jaw, through a tiny incision hidden under the chin. Lower face lift – While this surgery doesn’t focus directly on the neck, it can remove jowling and further contour the chin area. It is frequently carried out in conjunction with a neck lift. There is no one perfect treatment for everyone. For some patients with advanced aging, surgery will give the best results and they will still need to continue caring for their neck with nonsurgical treatments for prevention. For others that are concerned earlier in the game, nonsurgical treatments can help prevent or stave off the need for surgery. To learn more, call 703-742-8004 to schedule your consultation with Dr. Gartside.

Dr. Roberta Gartside is a board-certified plastic surgeon with more than 30 years of experience in the DC Metro area. She is a member of both American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) and American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and the Treasure of the VA Society for Plastic Surgeons. She is also the Chair of the Board for the Society for Women’s Health Research. Dr. Roberta Gartside is one of the most experienced and sought after surgeons in the area. She takes the time to work one-on-one with her patients to customize their treatment plans to fit their specific needs and desires. In addition to a wide range of cosmetic surgery procedures, she also offers other non-invasive treatments such as Botulinumtoxin A (Botox), facial fillers (Juvederm, Voluma, etc.), microneedling, ThermiVA (vaginal) and nonsurgical body contouring (SculpSure).

Vein Health is Women’s Health Over the summer and fall, I saw many patients with bulging, ropey veins in their legs. It’s easy to notice varicose and spider veins during short-and-sun-dress season, but just because your legs look healthy, it doesn’t mean they are. Varicosities are just one possible symptom of a larger issue: vein disease. Forty million Americans suffer from vein disease, but this disorder goes widely undiagnosed. Vein disease is a result of reduced function in the veins in your feet and legs, causing blood to flow backward and pool in the lower extremities. This pooling can cause other less obvious, but perhaps more sinister, symptoms: leg pain, cramps, swelling, fatigue, itching and burning… Left unchecked, vein disease can progress into more serious complications, including limited mobility, venous leg ulcers and Lymphedema. If you’re experiencing leg pain, whether you can see your veins or not, it could be vein disease.

10

Women are at Higher Risk of Vein Disease Vein disease is hereditary, and weight, age and lifestyle choices are all factors in causation as well. But women are unfortunately at higher risk of vein disease than men. I myself have suffered from vein disease, which guided me to this field of study in the first place. A recent population study showed 66 percent of cases occur in women. Hormonal changes that occur during puberty and menopause, along with the use of birth control pills, can all weaken the vein walls. Moms are even more at risk, and that risk increases with

N o v e m b e r /De c e m b e r 2 0 1 9 | FAIRFAXWOM A N .C OM

each pregnancy. As the baby grows within the uterus, increased pressure is put on the already hormonally weakened veins. Chronic Pelvic Pain Vein disease can also play a role in causing chronic pelvic pain in women. Chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS) is characterized by persistent pain located anywhere between the belly-button and the hips. Unlike menstrual cramps, CPPS lasts for at least six months and doesn’t get better or worse based on the menstrual cycle. CPPS has many potential causes, and vein disease is one of them. A frequent cause of CPPS is pelvic congestion syndrome (PCS), which is when varicose veins develop within the abdomen. An excess of the hormone estrogen often causes this condition — usually during pregnancy or at various stages of the menstrual cycle. Estrogen can weaken the walls of the veins, causing them to deform and expand. The vein begins to balloon, holding more and more blood, which increases the pressure in the vessel. Eventually, the pressure becomes too much for the valves whose function it is to keep blood flowing toward the heart. As these valves fail, blood begins to pool, causing painful varicose veins to develop. Because CVR focuses solely on the vein health of the lower extremities, we can diagnose and treat your PCS. All it takes is a short evaluation. There is a solution. While leg pain and bulging veins are often assumed to be an inevitability of aging, I can give my patients relief from these symptoms and prevent their vein disease from progressing further. The Center for Vein Restoration locations in Fairfax, Fair Oaks, Alexandria and

throughout the DMV can provide evaluation through a 30-minute ultrasound session. If there is a medical need, treatments are simple, pain-free and require no downtime. Myself and my colleagues are trained in a variety of noninvasive vein closure modalities, including Venaseal, ClariVein, radiofrequency and others, to provide a treatment plan customized to you. Don’t let leg pain go unchecked. Come into a CVR location today and learn more about your vein health, and start looking better, feeling better and living better today. Call 1-800-FIXLEGS (1-800-349-5347) to schedule your appointment or visit on the web at centerforvein.com.

Priya Thirumlai, MD, FACS is an Endovenous surgeon and Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology, allowing her to focus a career in lower extremity venous disease and PCS. She has over 16 years’ experience and is a proud recipient of the Guardian Angel Award, HCA Healthcare Distinction Award and won the Most Compassionate Doctor Award twice. She joined Center for Vein Restoration in 2015. The mission of Center for Vein Restoration is to improve lives in the communities we serve by providing state-of-the-art vascular care to those with a true medical need. Facial Contouring: Beautification & Masculinization Contouring has been a popular buzzword for years and it is often mentioned in the beauty/makeup industry to accentuate certain facial features. Contouring can show lifted, defined cheeks bones. as well as define other areas of the face including the nose, jawline and the chin. Contouring with makeup uses light and dark makeup to help create illusions, shadows and highlights. It is common for women to desire to highlight their cheek bones because it is a sign of youth and a lifted face. While makeup can do wonders, dermal fillers can help supplement and change your existing bone structure. Facial contouring with dermal fillers can lift and pull areas up that have lost elasticity. One can also use FDA-approved fillers such as Restylane Lyft, Juvéderm Voluma, and Radiesse to help change the shape of the face. For example, an ideal face shape is often heartshaped or contoured with a strong cheekbones and jawline. Cheek and Jawline Contouring One should always start with the cheeks when doing facial contouring. This is because when a person determines our age, we

often look first at the eyes and the surrounding area – cheeks and under eyes. Celebrities who come to mind with strong jawlines include Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. Throughout evolution, a chiseled jawline has emerged as a sign of attractiveness for men. There are points on the face for men that can be contoured with dermal fillers, such as improving the mid face, giving a square chin and jawline, therefore, achieving a more masculine, rugged appearance. On the other hand, there are areas of a woman’s face that we can highlight to make more feminine, such as contouring the cheekbones and chin. These areas anchor the face and help tighten

and pull back the skin, so using dermal filler to restore volume loss will lift the lower face. Dermal filler is an amazing option to really make those cheekbones ‘pop’. Using dermal filler for facial contouring can also restore balance to the face. Whether it’s a result of genetics or environmental factors, such as sleeping predominantly on one side of the face, filler can correct asymmetry as well.

At Alexandria Children's Dentistry,

What should I tell my child about the first dental visit? This is one of our most commonly asked questions. First of all, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends children start seeing a dentist as early as age one! We suggest you prepare your child the same way that you would before their first haircut or trip to the shoe store. The first visit to the dentist is the most important in your child’s life so we need your help. We ask that you help to make this visit enjoyable by reinforcing our role as a “tooth doctor” who works to keep teeth healthy and happy. Be relaxed and at ease with your child. They will sense any anxiety on your part. Tell your child that we will “brush,” “count” and “take pictures” of their teeth and then talk afterwards about it. Don’t overdo it! It is best if you refrain from using words around your child that might cause unnecessary fear, such as “needle,” “shot,” “pull,” “drill,” or “hurt.” In our

Beauty Shines from the Inside “Happy girls are the prettiest.” – Audrey Hepburn. In my mid-thirties, I am a far cry from the awkward pre-teen and teenage girl I was in the past, worried about if a boy would ever like me, and crushed when I was told I was ugly. Words back then meant a lot, and I took them to heart well into my twenties – settling for whoever seemed interested in me at the time because I didn’t believe anyone else would want me or find me attractive. Now, when a drunk guy at the bar tells me I’m “ugly” because I’ve politely, or not so politely, told him I wasn’t interested, I can just smile and say I’m not for everyone, and move on. Some would say I grew into myself; I acquired a curve or two, realized my hair is much more mermaid than pixie, and stepped into a more feminine look. I would say I grew into myself, but in a completely different way. I finally figured out who I

was, what makes me shine and what really matters. Surprisingly, whether someone finds me physically attractive is not in the top 10 of things that matter, not that I don’t love a compliment here and there when I look nice.

I’ve learned the phrase “beauty is only skin deep” is a huge lie we need to stop telling our kids and ourselves. I understand the sentiment, I really do, but to me it’s still all wrong. Beauty begins from the inside and glows outward, which is why we should be focused on nourishing our bodies and souls in the beauty industry. It’s easy to go look at the latest and greatest silver bullet in skin care to make ourselves look 18 again. With Botox and collagen threads, vampire facials, microneedling, and everything else out there, why wouldn’t you give that a try? Personally, my skin care philosophy leans towards the thought process that if I wouldn’t eat it, I’m not putting it on my face. Also, if it’s going to show on my skin, am I going to put it in my body? Sure, chocolate cake sounds amazing right now, and in moderation it’s awesome, but if I eat a whole cake every day, my skin, and love handles will show it. So, maybe, beauty does start somewhere inside with what we are putting into and on our bodies. My favorite part about beauty is when someone’s inner light is just shining through like a beacon. The moment someone is talking about what they are passionate about. When you get super excited. That perfectly timed compliment bringing a sparkle into your eye on even the worst day. True beauty. The beauty on

the inside. I know some of you are rolling your eyes at me, it’s ok. I am a firm believer the plainest person physically can be the star of any room with self-confidence and some passion! Sleep, water, exercise and healthy foods, you’ve all heard it before, but I will say it again! That’s the easy part. Please get regular facials from a professional to keep your skin healthy. But most importantly, be around people and things that bring out your truest beauty. Your aura is always your best advertisement.

INTERVIEW WITH

Virginia Colin, Ph.D. Director of Colin Family Mediation Group LLC

HELPING FAMILIES STAY OUT OF COURT Q: HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE THE ROLE OF THE MEDIATOR? A mediator’s primary responsibility is to facilitate a constructive discussion. Often that means helping each person hear the other person’s perspective. Most people have a hard time listening when they are in the middle of a dispute. Sometimes the mediator needs to help people stay calm enough to think clearly. Sometimes we help people recognize why they think a certain outcome is crucial and find other ways to meet the need that underlies their preferred outcome.

Q: WHEN DID YOU FIRST LEARN OF THE BENEFITS OF MEDIATION? I learned a little about how good mediation could be when I was getting divorced in the 1990s. I learned much more when I volunteered to mediate for a friend who had been in a custody battle for more than a year and a half. His ex-wife decided to give the process a chance even though she could reasonably have expected me to be biased in his favor. The process in that case was long, hard, stressful, and exhausting, but also successful. My friend came to an agreement with his ex on a custody and visitation schedule they could both live with. Their kids no longer had to live in an emotional war zone. Despite the parents’ history of hostility and frequent court hearings, they never went back to court.

“OUR CLIENTS RARELY SPEND MORE THAN $3,000 TOTAL, FOR BOTH PARTIES, AND OFTEN GET BETTER OUTCOMES.” Q: HAVE YOU HAD A PERSONAL EXPERIENCE WHERE MEDIATION HELPED? Mediation helped my husband and me finalize some decisions about when our children would spend time with each of us. And, of course, I have had hundreds of experiences seeing mediation help our clients.

(continued)

Q: WHEN DID YOU DECIDE TO BECOME A MEDIATOR? After succeeding with my friend and his ex, I thought there probably were not many people who would be willing to put themselves into the middle of that kind of hostility, and maybe even fewer who could help the parents succeed in developing an agreement. So, I thought maybe that was the work I was supposed to be doing. It felt like a calling.

Q: CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE TRAINING AND CREDENTIALS? The legislature created and the Supreme Court of Virginia oversees one of the best training programs for mediators in the country. You have to complete a specific set of programs to learn the information and skills you will need as a mediator. Then you have to co-mediate several cases with certified mentor mediators, do child support calculations, and write the agreement that two or more of your clients have developed. When one of your mentors says that you are ready to handle cases on your own, you can be certified. I got my training and apprenticeship opportunities from Northern Virginia Mediation Service, which has been doing a great job training mediators for decades. Our state also has continuing education requirements, including ethics training, for mediators who want to retain their certifications.

Q: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN MEDIATING AND WHAT KEPT YOU IN THIS FIELD? Professionally I have been mediating for 10 years. What keeps me in the field is seeing again and again how valuable mediation is for families. For example, in divorce cases, people who hire two attorneys to help them fight with each other spend tens of thousands of dollars, get angrier, more anxious, and more depressed, and have little control of the outcome of their disputes. In divorce mediation, people have professional support working together to solve their family’s shared problem. Most of our clients only spend $1,000 to $3,000 for our help creating and then writing their Marital Settlement Agreements. We don’t make the emotional distress worse, and the two clients have complete control of the decisions that get written into their agreement. “I still have a missionary feeling about this work. The world needs skilled, professional family mediators. That keeps me in the field.”

Q: WHAT SPURRED THE GROWTH OF YOUR PRACTICE AND CONTRIBUTED TO ADDING MORE MEDIATORS? Before I was trained, mediators told me you cannot earn a living as a family mediator. I thought that was crazy. With so many families obviously in need of mediation services, how could it not be possible to earn enough money helping them? I set out to prove my advisors wrong. It took time to develop my practice, but after five years I realized that if I was

getting one more new case per week than I already was, it would be more cases than I wanted to handle on my own. So, I invited other mediators I knew, including two of my mentors, to join my practice. I help the people who need us find us, the other mediators each take some of the cases, and we share the income.

Q: WHAT TYPES OF CONFLICTS ARE IDEAL FOR THE WORK OF A MEDIATOR? The topic of a conflict is less important than the willingness of the people involved to try to find solutions. Ideally, each person is willing to negotiate in good faith, each person wants to find a solution, and each person is able, perhaps with help from the mediator, to keep emotions from overwhelming his or her ability to think. When the people involved want to solve the family problem, it does not matter whether the problem is elder care planning, family business succession, marriage mediation, or reconnecting family members who have been estranged from each other.

Q: HOW MUCH TIME AND MONEY CAN MEDIATION SAVE, LET’S SAY IN AN AVERAGE DIVORCE? When going toward divorce through lawyers and court hearings, people usually spend $10,000 to $30,000 each, and sometimes spend as much as $100,000 per person. That’s a lot of money going out of the family and into the accounts of lawyers. Our clients rarely spend more than $3,000 total, for both parties, and often get better outcomes.

Take Control of the Holidays The upcoming holidays can add stress to our already busy lives. Staying healthy starts with a full awareness of your mind, body, heart and spirit. Be mindful of what you are experiencing, so that you can take steps that take care of you. When we are stretched for time, we often try to fit as much into a day as we can, which leaves us little time to rejuvenate. There are a number of practices that you can incorporate into your routine that refuel – some taking only a few minutes. By incorporating any of these – or other practices you may enjoy – you can minimize the stress and you may even end up enjoying this time more than you thought you would. If you need some help getting through the next

few weeks, please reach out to The Women’s Center and sign up for our “healthy holidays” webinar on Nov. 12, 2019. Visit our website thewomanscenter.org for more details.

HOW MICRONEEDLING REPAIRS SEVERELY DAMAGED SKIN Featuring Allyson Burgess, RN, BSN Cosmetic lasers have come a long way since they were first introduced to aesthetic medicine. The newest lasers provide impressive results with less downtime than their predecessors, making them the go-to devices for helping patients with problems such as unwanted tattoos, scarring or hyperpigmentation. Now you can add “needling”, the new treatment removes scar tissue, deep lines, discoloration and tattoos. In recent years, microneedling has risen in popularity and is now commonly used for treatments such as scar revision, hyperpigmentation and improvement in fine lines/wrinkles. The rise in the acceptance of microneedling among dermatological and surgical practices may be attributed to its ease-ofuse, versatility, overall safety and consistently satisfactory results. Microneedling works with the skin’s natural ability to repair itself. Microneedling creates microchannels within your skin. This treatment allows for all the benefits of collagen induction therapy. With microneedling there is very little down-time. Microneedling can treat all patients of all skin types and colors. This is important for people whose skin color may not make them a good candidate for other procedures and treatments. Microneedling does not depend on chromophores (pigment or color) to work. Therefore, it does not matter how dark one’s skin tone is (naturally or if you’ve spent too much time in the sun) when considering a treatment. Microneedling can provide great results for people with all skin types. Microneedling takes advantage of the skin’s natural healing ability to safely deliver consistent results to patients with all skin types with littleto-no downtime.

ANTI-AGING BREAKTHROUGHS FOR 2020 Featuring Ivana Donley, Licensed LME Clinician Fractional Pixel and Clear Lift Lasers are the key to turning back the clock. Unlike traditional lasers, which use a stamping or scanning technique, these lasers allow the clinician to treat the targeted area with high speed and elegant efficiency. The Fractional Pixel pulses are triggered as the treatment tip is rolled across the skin, regardless of the speed at which the hand piece is moved. These modules accurately and consistently deliver

a single row of seven pixels per millimeter and it creates thousands of microscopic perforations while leaving the surrounding tissue intact. In more detail, the Pixel laser light passes through patented optics to penetrate the skin with tiny thermal channels. These micro-injury sites begin healing and, as collagen remodels, scars begin to fade, and texture starts to improve. If you are looking for a shorter downtime, ClearLift is a non-ablative approach to laser skin resurfacing. Clinicians can offer patients skin resurfacing treatments that are fast and virtually painless with visible results and no downtime. The innovative technology delivers a controlled dermal wound deep beneath the skin. The outer layer of the skin is left undamaged. All stages of healing and skin repair occur under the intact epidermis. This laser has numerous advantages, fast treatment time, no topical numbing is required, and treatments can take as little as 30 minutes. It is virtually painless, and patients report a comfortable, skin resurfacing experience. Unlike other laser treatments, patients can immediately return to their daily lifestyle. Variable tip depths can also be used for a combination of work on the same area to customize treatment in problem areas. The tips give providers the levels

of flexibility needed to transcend the skin barrier and address a variety of age-related skin imperfections. The end result is an optimal outcome for the patient.

REMOVE FAT FIRST, BUILD MUSCLE SECOND Featuring Nuha Handoush, Licensed LME Clinician The future has arrived! People with unwanted fat, in the wrong places, are always looking for better ways, and the newest technology, to help reduce or get rid of that fat and build muscle. We are excited to announce that the newest member of the CoolSculpting family, CoolTone, has been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is now available in the Fall. CoolTone uses magnetic muscle stimulation to induce supramaximal contractions to increase muscle strength and definition in the abdomen and the buttocks. CoolTone is not only the most powerful muscle toning device on the market today, it is also pain-free. The powerful electromagnetic current that is produced to stimulate the muscle contraction is able to bypass the sensory nerves which allows for a comfortable yet effective treatment. The introduction of CoolTone into the marketplace will undoubtedly jolt the body contouring industry. The FDA approved the newest CoolTone device for use in strengthening, toning and firming the abdominal area, buttocks and thighs. CoolTone uses magnetic muscle stimulation to penetrate muscle layers, which then causes involuntary muscle contractions. The body responds to the contractions by strengthening muscle fibers, leading to increased muscle tone. Same maker of the CoolSculpting device, a non-surgical fat-elimination device that works by freezing and killing fat cells in targeted areas like the abdomen, flanks or under the chin.

TWO OF THE BEST COMBO TREATMENTS TO KILL FAT CELLS Featuring Olga Solovienko, Licensed LME Clinician Looking for the latest and most safe, effective tools to kill fat cells, with a high patient satisfaction rate? CoolScultping Cryolipolysis “fat freezing” with Vanquish Radio Frequency Adipose Tissue Melting is a perfect combo treatment to kill fat cells. These body contouring technologies are noninvasive procedures that require no surgery, no scarring and no downtime. These days, many people do not have the luxury of being away from their work for many days. CoolSculpting

Cryolipolysis, also called “fat freezing,” is an FDA-approved procedure that involves the non-invasive cooling of body fat to break down fat cells, resulting in a reduction of body fat without damage to other tissue. It has been one of the most researched and efficient procedures when it comes to stubborn areas of fat like flanks, abdomen, back bulges and thighs. During the procedure, a vacuum applicator is placed on the area, the tissue is drawn into the hand piece, and two cooling panels cool down to freeze fat cells in about 35 minutes, followed by a two-minute massage upon completion to improve the outcome. The patient then can go home and resume normal activities. Over a few months, fat cells will die and be naturally removed from the body. Vanquish Radiofrequency adipose tissue melting is a treatment that harnesses the power of radio frequency energy to target fat cells. The applicator automatically produces radiofrequency energy, which is transmitted to fat cells without affecting skin or muscle tissue. As the energy is absorbed by the fat cells, they heat up and die. Through a natural process called apoptosis the body flushes dead fat cells out of the body. This is a fascinating technology where there is no contact with the body, and the radiofrequency energy targets the fat cells. The unique contactless panel allows patients to treat a broad area at once, producing more results with no lines of demarcation. Vanquish Radiofrequency adipose tissue melting is effective to help slim the abs, belly, love handles, and thighs. It is designed to treat and adjust to each of these areas where fat is unwanted. On your thighs, the system simultaneously slims both the inner and outer thighs, and saddlebags. This allows for enhanced patient outcomes and shorter treatment times.

The European Academy of Arts

An Elite Music and Art School at Your Doorstep Dear parents, students, and music lovers, welcome to The European Academy of Arts – a world-class school and beacon of arts and culture for Northern Virginia. It’s a great honor to invite you to come and experience an exceptional music and arts education. The European Academy of Arts welcomes students of all ages and levels. Whether you are a beginner or an accomplished artist, The European Academy of Arts will greatly fulfill your personal goals and expectations. It was created to serve, to nourish, and to inspire students and families. This fine arts school stands out with its own exclusive vision, philosophy of teaching, and depth of its curriculum.

High-quality education is a prerequisite for learning a lifetime skill. Every parent dreams to see their children well-educated and successful. Yet, the seeds of their future success must be planted well ahead of time. The role of outstanding teachers thus is essential for every child’s mental, spiritual and emotional development. Throughout the course of the last decade, we were able to visit many of the local music schools in the Northern Virginia area. To our astonishment, we found their curriculum, facilities, faculty, and, most importantly, care for the students sorely lacking. Music lessons often take place in churches and

facilities, neither suitable nor equipped for the purpose. Instead of quality pianos, students practice on plastic keyboards in cramped and dirty classrooms. In these poor conditions, the appropriate education is barely possible. Students feel bored and uninterested, and their progress remains limited even after years of studying. We were convinced that such a sad state of affairs had to change. Every faculty member of The European Academy of Arts is an accomplished, world-class musician with college, graduate and postgraduate degrees from the leading American and European music schools. Winners of international competitions and performing artists, these incredible individuals shall guide every student with utmost care and attention. At The European Academy of Arts, we strongly believe that the quality of education cannot be compromised for any reason. Each student is unique to us. The European Academy of Arts offers ethnic Chinese, Korean and Indian music studies, alongside all traditional Western classical instruments and singing. We offer the largest and most professional choice of courses of any school around. For the youngest students, we offer wonderful classes for toddlers. Parent involvement is encouraged, making the learning process fun for the entire family! Typical music studies are free of any commitment beyond one, weekly lesson with the principal teacher. Two other types of music study follow the ABRSM and Russian methods with their tiered level system. Finally, The European Academy of Arts features the “Aspiring Artist” program, best suited for students, who dream to become professional artists,

prize-winners of competitions, and musicians for a lifetime. The Academy has close artistic ties with leading music and art organizations, including Steinway, the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra, Washington Performing Arts, The Phillips Collection, The Embassy Series, The Juilliard School, among others. The European Academy of Arts is led by Dr. Edvinas Minkstimas, a Steinway Artist, a concert pianist, a winner of international piano competitions, and a graduate of both the Paris Conservatory and The Juilliard School. Together with his colleagues, Dr. Minkstimas seeks to present a stream of concerts, seminars, masterclasses, public events, presentations for the community. Residents of Chantilly, Pleasant Valley communities, as well as residents of Northern Virginia, in general, will be able to hear some of the worlds-leading artists in a cozy setting of the European Academy of Arts’ Theater. Experience superior music education and become a member of The European Academy of Arts’ Musical Family.

Dr. Edvinas Minkstimas, Steinway Artist, is a concert pianist, winner of international piano competitions, co-director of The European Academy of Arts, Artist-in-Residence of the Phillips Collection Music Series and The Embassy Series. Dr. Minkstimas is a graduate of both the Paris Conservatory of Music (CNSM de Paris, Artist Diploma, class of prof. Michel Beroff) and of The Juilliard School (MM, DMA, class of prof. Jerome Lowenthal). He serves on the board of directors of the Washington International Piano Festival, the Liberace Foundation and other arts organizations.

Alexandria Symphony: Autumn Storytelling and Holiday Merrymaking with a Twist The Alexandria Symphony Orchestra continues its 2019-2020 season of diverse programming under the direction of Maestro James Ross. In his second year as Music Director with the ASO, Ross endeavors to feature forgotten and underrepresented voices in the concert hall and present symphonic music in unconventional and creative ways. “Together we are exploring what vitality an orchestra can bring to our community,” says Maestro Ross. “Although we are dead serious about orchestral music and its much-needed humanizing impact in today’s world, we’re not afraid of surprises and presenting concerts that are both fun and moving.” Opening the ASO’s performances on Saturday, Nov. 16 and Sunday, Nov. 17, 2019, singers from the Alexandria

Choral Society and Fairfax Choral Society will join the orchestra for Lili Boulanger’s Old Buddhist Prayer. Lili was sister to the more famous Nadia Boulanger, known for her influential work in pedagogy. Although she died at 24, Lili composed many acclaimed works in her short life, and she was the first woman to win the Prix de Rome for composition in 1913. Following the choral opening, cellist Wolfgang Schmidt will perform Elgar’s Cello Concerto.

Ms. Short will perform Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, originally written for guitar and arranged for harp. She is a Classics Alive Artist, sought-after touring soloist, and enrolled at the UNC School of the Arts. December’s concerts will be presented one hour earlier than usual and with no intermission, and the entire audience is invited to stay for a post-concert reception complete with holiday treats, activities and a chance to meet the musicians. “It’s a multi-sensory concert followed by a holiday party for the whole ASO family,” says Ross. Elgar composed the concerto as his last major work, melancholy in its sentiment and also romantic and backward-looking in its style. Soloist Wolfgang Schmidt is internationally acclaimed as a touring and recording artist as well as a conductor. The November program will conclude with Dvorák’s Symphony No. 8. “Dvorák’s Eighth Symphony is full of sunshine, parables, folk dance, forest and perfectly-orchestrated storytelling,” relates Maestro Ross. The ASO will present a family-friendly holiday concert experience on Saturday, Dec. 14 and Sunday, Dec.15, 2019. Starting with the prelude to Hänsel and Gretel, the program includes the Nutcracker in two formats: excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s ballet suite and Duke Ellington’s rendition that swings. For Saturday’s performance, Ellington’s Nutcracker Suite will be accompanied by visual images by The New Live rendering the story of an African-American girl in Harlem. Additional visuals by Tim McLoraine will accompany Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite and Hänsel and Gretel. Also joining the ASO in December is Morgan Short, winner of the 43rd Mary Graham Lasley Scholarship Competition.

The Alexandria Symphony is a fully-professional orchestra drawing from the Washington, D.C. metropolitan region’s wealth of musical talent. The ASO performs Saturday evenings at the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center and Sunday matinees at the George Washington Masonic Memorial. Adult tickets start at $20, and the ASO offers discounts for seniors, students and military personnel and veterans. All youth (18 and under) tickets are $5. For tickets and more information, visit alexsym.org or call (703) 548-0885.
