KELLY’S AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE In 2003, shop owners Dave and Lisa Kelly took over an existing auto repair and maintenance shop in Grants Pass and brought their own family values to their business. Two years later, they opened a second shop in Medford. According to Lisa McClease-Kelly, the company’s goal is to do the personal things that other shops might not to develop a relationship with clients and keep those relationships for years to come. Being part of the community means giving back, said Lamensdorf, so Star Body Works invests in several local nonprofits and causes.

The twin aromas of fresh-baked bread and freshbrewed coffee make this bakery café in Medford a popular place for people to gather to meet friends for cups of java and a scone or muffin or even lunch, according to owners Dan and Lisa Allen. Since 1999, the couple and their team of bakers have enjoyed bringing fresh-made food to the Rogue Valley, Lisa Allen said. The on-site stone mill is still the heart of the freshness that goes into the muffins, breads and cookies, she added. In 2011, the Allens expanded the bakery into a café to serve soups and handmade sandwiches, complemented by their many varieties of dailymade breads.

Family-owned and operated since 1989, the Back Porch Bar & Grill — formerly Back Porch BBQ — is located in historic Jacksonville. Jamie Collins owns the restaurant with her husband, Blu Collins. They bought the restaurant five years ago and renamed it. The restaurant serves authentic Texas-style barbecue, steaks, burgers, sandwiches, wraps, salads and more, she explained. “We smoke our meat on the premises and use local oak wood,” said Jamie Collins. The restaurant keeps with the theme of historic Jacksonville, decorated with wagon wheels, saddles and pictures from a bygone era. “We encourage guests to ‘kick off their boots and stay awhile,’” she added.

SHOJI’S

EL MOLCAJETE MEXICAN GRILL

BELLA UNION RESTAURANT & SALOON

For almost four decades, Shoji’s in Medford has hand-prepared lunch and dinner in the unique “Old World” Japanese style of teppanyaki (stir frying on a grill), to capture the full, juicy goodness of fresh, quality ingredients, according to owners John and Karol Cartmill. The highly trained chefs at Shoji’s, the Cartmills explained, to entertain with fun, flair, flames and flashing knives. Customers are wide-eyed in awe when they witness the chefs’ skillful knife work, their humorous antics and the excitement of a flaming volcano of onions, according to John Cartmill. The Cartmills described the restaurants décor as clean, casual and classy. Many of their customers come to Shoji’s to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries or other special occasions.

In a region with countless options for Mexican food, a little family-run place on Medford’s Stewart Avenue stood out with readers. Maria Arias, daughter of owners Sergio and Sara Arias, said it’s likely the authentic recipes and casual atmosphere that lures customers back, again and again. Opened in 2013, El Molcajete is named for what has become the restaurant’s best-selling seasoned and grilled menu item. Variations of el molcajete can be found around the valley but Arias said her family’s version is special because of the sauce from the family’s home state of Jalisco. Patrons to the grill are treated to bean dip and chips when seated and sopapillas to end each meal. “We try to keep it very friendly and simple, making sure everybody feels at home. We’re always very grateful for our customers who support us,” Arias said.

The outdoor patio at Jacksonville’s Bella Union Restaurant & Saloon shelters under a magnificent wisteria vine, reputedly 100-plus years old. Christian Hamilton, the restaurant’s owner/ operator, said it takes effort to keep the outdoor space lush. “In the summer, it’s magical under the canopy of leaves and twinkling lights,” he said. “From June through September, some customers who could be seated immediately indoors prefer to wait extra minutes to sit outside.” Bella Union is in its 30th year of offering a broad dining menu, live music, a full bar and casual atmosphere. There is outdoor seat for about 100 diners. The patio is generally closed in the winter, except on Thursdays for Oysters and Ale. “For the last 20 years, rain or shine, from October to April, we barbecue oysters on the deck,” Hamilton said. “Customers will even stand in the rain for oysters. It’s almost a badge of honor.”

Not only is this difference appreciated by the “locals,” but the out-of-town guests, the owners reported. “Most everything that comes out of the kitchen is made fresh,” said co-owner Ben Allmaras. The quality begins with the kitchen crew, who start each day at 6 a.m. by slicing, dicing and roasting everything from scratch. They make all the dough, marinara, sauces, soups and salad dressings. The creativity of the kitchen crew is apparent, Allmaras said, because they frequently introduce new appetizers, pizzas, soups and desserts on the “Off the Menu” options that come out quarterly. “Our success comes from our people, who we greatly appreciate,” Allmaras said.

R&R PET RESORT Located in Phoenix, R & R Pet Resort is a full-care pet facility that offers dog and cat boarding, daily doggy day care and all-breed grooming, including cats. They are also a complete training facility and offer obedience classes, private lessons and behavior training. According to owner Sue Ross, R & R Pet Resort is open seven days a week for boarding, day care and grooming. Training sessions are scheduled by appointment. They have 120 indoor/outdoor main kennel runs, with a separate facility called “Tiny Town” for smaller guests. The entire facility is climate-controlled, and the staff caters to special diets and medications, Ross said. She added that there are many extra activities available for pets that owners may select to help make their pet’s stay even more enjoyable.

LUCKY DOG PET SALON Courtney Norris, owner of Lucky Dog Pet Salon in Medford, said she opened the salon five years ago and has seen steady growth. “We have an amazing team of skilled professional pet stylists that specialize in all breeds of dogs and cats. We offer a wide variety of services, and we stay current on the latest grooming styles and techniques,” she said. Norris believes that the salon won as “Best Groomer” because they take excellent care of their customers. “We care for each animal as if it were our own,” she said. “Our salon is clean, and we are available by appointment seven days a week. We do haircuts from the smallest Yorkie to the largest Doodle. Our customers love bringing their pets in to see us. We try to keep a relaxed ‘at-home’ atmosphere that makes for a comfortable grooming experience.”

THE GRANGE CO-OP Even with closure of its “Pet Country” specialty store last year, Grange Co-op held fast as pet lovers’ preferred provider of all things cat, dog, horse, bird and reptile. Offering an extensive lineup of specialty foods and pet care supplies, the Grange’s nine retail stores have always had hefty pet supply sales. Marketing director Jason Wall said expansion at retail stores in Medford and Central Point enabled the company to combine resources and give shoppers more access to non-pet goodies at the same time. “We were able to bring in all the stuff our customers went to the Pet Country location for,” Wall said. “And now they get the experience of also seeing the clothing store, décor and our nursery, too. It’s one stop shopping.”

Co-owner Doreen Bradshaw said their super-sweet bicolor corn and pumpkins are customer favorites. The farm store is open six days a week during the season. Other produce includes cucumbers, peppers, eggplants, tomatoes and melons. Though not organic, the farm does not use genetically-engineered seeds. Fall is a busy harvest season for the farm, including visits from school children and families who come for the u-pick pumpkin patch and hay rides. “We love what we do,” Bradshaw said. “This farm has sustained our family for over 80 years, so we feel we’ve done a good job of caring for the soil. With skilled employees and customer publications such as the GrangeKnows, marketing manager Jason Wall said taking care of customers is the key to the Grange’s loyal fan base. “We strive to have the best product as well as the best knowledge to share with our customers. Our nursery is what we’re known for,” Wall said, noting that a focus on locally sourced products is a focus at all nine retail stores. TRADER JOE’S Among 482 locations across the country, the Trader Joe’s in Medford opened in 2012. Kenya FriendDaniel, the company’s director of public relations, explained that Trader Joe’s primary focus is providing customers with “unique, as well as basic products, including natural and organic options, that are of the highest quality at outstanding prices.” If a product isn’t popular with customers, Trader Joe’s discontinues it for something else that is new and exciting. “It means a lot to us to once again be recognized by Mail Tribune readers,” Friend-Daniel said. “Every product in our stores has been selected with our customers in mind, so any time we hear that customers enjoy those products or have chosen us as their top food destination, it is always an honor.”

Boasting five generations of painters, Medfordbased Drake’s Paint and Supply owners credit an emphasis on customer service and quality product for a loyal customer following that began almost immediately on opening day in 1984. Owned by cousins Dan and John Drake, the store traces its beginnings to three brothers – their dads – working as painters who discovered a good product and wouldn’t settle for anything less. “My dad and two uncles were painters, and they had to drive to Klamath Falls to purchase Benjamin Moore paint for a job one time. After using it once, they liked it so much, they would drive to Klamath Falls to buy it for all their jobs,” Dan Drake said. “They ended up working out a deal with the store there where they picked up product and tinted it for all their customers. It was that good.”
