The owners and employees of Star Body Works give a huge thank you to the community for voting the business a Best of the Best for 2020. Star Body Works has been operating in the Rogue Valley since 1948. The current owners, brothers Mark and JR Lamensdorf, have led the business since 1989. The collision repair service is certified to work on most auto manufacturers, including Subaru, Honda, Tesla, Ford and General Motors. “Sticking together as a community and supporting each other should be our No. 1 priority,” said Mark Lamensdorf. The brothers said that Star Body Works takes pride in community involvement by being a part of Jackson County 4H program, Providence Festival of Trees, David’s Chair and many more local nonprofits and causes. “Star Body Works is proud to be supported by its community. Thank you all so much!” said JR Lamensdorf.

During a wild year, Yellow Submarine Car Wash continues to do what is most important in a service industry: make our customers happy, said owner Ben Tresser. “We will always offer our personalized ‘vehicle prep’ in addition to our state-of-the art car wash tunnel, unlimited free vacuum, wipe down towels, glass cleaner and a 24-hour clean car guarantee,” he explained. However, Tresser said Yellow Submarine Car Wash has taken the new coronavirus seriously. The staff wear face masks on-site and offer free face masks and hand sanitizer to customers. Yellow Submarine has temporarily closed car detailing operations to protect customers and employees. “We know these are tough times for everyone in the Rogue Valley, and we wish all of our customers the best of health and prosperity for the rest of 2020,” Tresser said. “We humbly thank all of our loyal customers who made this award possible.”

Co-owner Lisa McClease-Kelly sends out a thank you to Southern Oregon for voting Kelly’s Automotive Service as the Best Automotive Shop in the Rogue Valley for 10 consecutive years. “To our clients in both Grants Pass and Medford, your trust over the years is not taken for granted,” she said. “We cherish your business and are blessed to call many of you friends. Dave and I could have never imagined this when we moved to the Rogue Valley. Your votes acknowledge the absolute best staff in the industry. I can’t express how blessed we are to work with people who share our values and love to take care of people. Our purpose for being in business is to bless our staff, our clients and our community. We are so grateful to be part of one of the most giving communities on earth. Thank you for giving us your business.”

Catering to doit-yourselfers as well as professional installers and repair shops, O’Reilly’s employs some 79,000 team members in 47 states. The stores offer a customer loyalty rewards program, weekly specials and a “green” approach via recycling and sound environmental practices at both corporate offices and community stores. She is also a hair stylist. Her specialty is eyelashes, which she started doing three years ago.” Stewart applies eyelash extensions, which are a semi-permanent alternative to strip eyelashes. She applies faux mink lashes with a non-irritating glue to individual eyelashes, which lengthen the natural lash and enhance the shape of the eye. “Her lashes are phenomenal,” Young said. “She pays close attention to detail. In the same Medford location for 55 years, Black Bird Shopping Center is a local landmark and certainly the only store with two talking Congo African Grey parrots. “Patrons love shopping at our locally owned store because it has a hometown eccentricity that is a fun experience to visit and browse,” said Joy Erickson, assistant buyer. Black Bird stocks supplies for all outdoor experiences, including camping, hunting, fishing, boating, swimming and more. Erickson said Black Bird’s knowledgeable staff provides a strong customer resource, particularly in fishing and hunting. Though they stock a large inventory, staff will do their best to special order any specific customer requests. Black Bird is fun, unique and reasonably priced, Erickson added. “Whether you are looking for some great deals or higher-end products, Blackbird strives to have it all. We’re not a chain store. We are still a local, hometown store where a family can get outfitted for a camping or fishing trip without going broke.”

The Silver Dragon opened 27 years ago. Though a longstanding favorite with voters, the restaurant recently upgraded the menu to make the customer experience even better. “We’ve removed MSG from all our recipes and all our poultry dishes are now made with fresh, white breast meat,” said Jason Chen, the undermanager. “We wanted to make our menu healthier for our customers. Many people have negative reactions to MSG, so we took it out. That meant we had to reinvent the seasonings in our recipes, but customers appreciate our efforts and feedback is positive.” Chen complimented his wait staff for their ability to help customers work through any dietary restrictions. Many of their dishes are gluten- and lactose-free, also. “We offer good quality food with good quantity for the price,” he said. “We are blessed with wonderful customers, whose support and loyalty are the reasons we’ve been here so long.”

Once again, Porters in Medford is the popular choice, serving classic American dining from casual to upscale. Whether it’s a fabulous burger with a regional beer, the popular all-day/all-night happy hour or fine dining complemented by the select wine list, Porters has a plate for every pocketbook, said Rolar Yondorf, co-owner of Porters. “It’s a rarity to have an independent, locally owned restaurant and bar,” he added. “After 19 successful years in business, the crew at Porters is grateful for such a loyal following. The team at Kaleidoscope want to recognize all of their customers, said co-owner Kristi Haavig. “When we were forced to close our restaurant in March, we had to develop a system to provide curbside service that was easy for our customers and safe for our employees,” she said. “We had a huge learning curve to overcome, but our customers hung in with us. Then when the main restaurant opened, we had to make new adjustments there too. For the community to recognize our hard work in maintaining our commitment to good service is gratifying. Thank you to everyone!”

What is the secret to the great steaks at Porters Dining at the Depot in Medford? According to co-owner Rolar Yondorf, the answer is starting with great beef. “We have worked with the same local purveyor for decades— Bruce Emerson at Cherry Street Meats. He sources the best of the Northwest. Then he extra ages our custom cuts for enhanced tenderness and richer flavor. We are excited to offer prime grade, 30-day dry-aged ribeye, T-bone and porterhouse steaks.” After starting with the best beef, the key is preparation and presentation. “Our broiler chefs work to intensify those flavors with just the right amount of seasoning and chargrilling along with the desired temperature. The real trick is to consistently execute all of this hundreds of times every week,” Yondorf said. “We thank voters and all our loyal supporters for once again recognizing Porters as the best place for a steak dinner.”

Costco is a membership warehouse club with hundreds of locations worldwide. The company’s operating philosophy, according to store manager Ron Cheek, is to continually provide members with quality goods and services at the lowest possible prices. Within the Vitamins, Herbals & Dietary Supplements section, Costco stocks 240 over-the-counter options. Of those, 60 items are Costco’s own Kirkland Signature brand, 90% of which are certified by the United States Pharmacopeia for meeting standards for purity and quality. “We pride ourselves in our Kirkland Signature products for being as good, if not better, than national leading brands,” Cheek said. “At our location, sales are incredibly strong in supplements for joint care and minerals.”
