Expert help for foot and leg pain OUR feet are vital for mobility and balance, they are the basis of most of our physical activities, so it’s no wonder problems and pain are common Heel, arch, ankle and knee pain are most common in both children and adults and can become life affecting or debilitating if left untreated. But there is often a simple solution, if you get a correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Experienced Musculoskeletal Podiatrist Dr. David Kavanagh, from Foot & Leg Pain Clinics says, “People often endure foot and leg pain and concerns for far too long, usually because they have been misdiagnosed and so receive inappropriate treatment for their condition or because they simply don’t know who to go to for effective treatment. The good news is that most foot and leg conditions can usually be overcome quite easily thanks to the latest medical research and treatments.” Whilst there are many doctors and health professionals available right across Victoria, one of the issues we all face is knowing who to go to for specific problems, and this certainly seems to be a

dilemma with many who suffer foot and leg pain, injuries or degenerative conditions like arthritis. “ At Foot & Leg Pain Clinics we see many people who’ve previously been to see other health practitioners, without having found a long-term solution. This can be extremely frustrating for the sufferer and can lead to problems progressing further than they need to. If you suffer any foot, leg, knee or hip pain, regardless of age, you should always seek advice from an experienced Musculoskeletal Podiatrist, one who keeps upto-date with the latest research and treatments. Such practitioners have the appropriate training, knowledge and experience to assist lower limb concerns in the very best way possible.” Dr. Kavanagh explains. Greens’ team seeks shire seats Keith Platt keith@mpnews.com.au THE Mornington Peninsula branch of the Greens says it will be fielding five candidates in the October Mornington Peninsula Shire elections. Political parties usually run shy of endorsing specific candidates but the Greens last week issued a news release announcing a “team … [that] understand the priorities of their diverse wards, and are committed to genuinely listening to and delivering

for their communities”. The outspokenness of the Greens comes a week after seven of the shire’s 10 remaining councillors told The News they were yet to decide on whether to seek re-election. Only Crs Hugh Fraser (Nepean ward), Antonella Celi (Seawinds) and David Garnock (Cerberus) were willing to admit they wanted to remain on council. More direct political influence has come from the state parliament which has banned how-to-vote cards being included with the shire’s postal elec-

Shire of Mornington David Gill announced he would seek election to Red Hill ward. “I aim to bring back a grass roots representative role to the shire instead of the present board of directors corporate structure style of decision making,” Mr Gill said. He said “the prolonged and embarrassing councillor debate” allowances for overseas travel, mileage reimbursement, private education expenses and childcare proved they were out of touch with community values. Breakfast readies pupils for the day RYE Primary School’s Breakfast Club has extended its services by an extra day and now serves meals 8.15-8.45am Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Pupils are offered toast with jam or spread, porridge, baked beans, toasties, cereal, fresh fruit and hot chocolate. The club is also running a cooking club one lunch time a fortnight, together with a life skills session for those who require one-on-one assistance. They cook up an assortment of food, such as health cookies, muffins and slices, which are served to pupils at breakfast next day. “We encourage all students to come and sit down and enjoy a healthy or extra breakfast and this is proving to have a positive effect on their education and social interaction,” the school’s Maureen Stephen said. “Some teachers also join in for breakfast.” Volunteers include Doug Grant, Maree Chrisomalidisas, Gary Storey, Geoff Foster-Swan and Mechelle Cheers. “Without their help it would be difficult to successfully run this program and, as an added bonus, it is great to see them interacting with the pupils,” Ms Stephen said. Pupils also volunteer to help with setting up and packing up each day, serving breakfast and collecting dirty dishes. They also spend time with pupils attending the breakfast club. The breakfast club has been running for about seven years with the support of St Vincent de Paul, Food Bank, Woolworths Rye, Lions Club Rye, Second Bite, Vision Australia Opportunity shop Rye and Southern Peninsula Community Fund Rye. Tough new laws to tackle carjacking, home invasions Stephen Taylor steve@mpnews.com.au CARJACKINGS and home invasions were the focus of new legislation introduced into state parliament last week. The Crimes Act 1958 will be amended to create new offences of carjacking, aggravated carjacking, home invasion and aggravated home invasion. The legislated offences will attract harsher penalties and give police the “laws they need to keep the community safe”. The legislation, developed in consultation with Victoria Police, will include statutory minimum sentences for aggravated carjacking and aggravated home invasion. And, to combat the rise of youth gangs, the legislation’s showcause provisions will apply regardless of the age of the offender. Southern Metro Region 4 Divisional Commander Glenn Weir – who

oversees the Mornington Peninsula and Frankston areas – said carjackings were “very rare in our area but any extra tools, such as the presumption against bail for these types of offences, are of value to us”. The senior policeman said he “appreciates any extra ability provided to us to deal with these types of offences”. He would not comment on harsher sentences which he said were “matters for the judiciary”. Carjackings and home invasions have become more common in the southern suburbs over the past two years. They are often linked to the rise of youth gangs out “missioning” – or breaking into houses at night to steal car keys – or bumping into cars and attacking vehicle owners who hop out to exchange names and addresses, traumatising victims. The Bail Act 1977 will also be

amended to include a presumption against bail for aggravated carjacking, home invasion and aggravated home invasion. This means the accused will need to justify why they should not be remanded. The new offence of carjacking will carry a maximum penalty of 15 years and aggravated carjacking 25 years. A statutory minimum non-parole period of three years will also apply to aggravated carjacking. A home invasion conviction will carry a maximum penalty of 25 years and aggravated home invasion a statutory minimum non-parole period of three years. A home invasion is defined as someone committing a burglary while armed or where there is a person in the house. To recognise the traumatic effect on victims, the Bill specifically introduces an element of “strict liability” which means it is irrelevant whether the offender knew if there was someone

THE RYE HOTEL

home at the time. Aggravated home invasion applies where at least three armed offenders commit a burglary where a person is present and the offender knew, or was reckless, as to whether there were people in the home. Carjacking applies when offenders steal a vehicle using force or threaten to use force. Aggravated carjacking occurs when the person committing the offence has an offensive weapon or causes injury to another person while committing the offence. Police Minister Lisa Neville said although carjackings and home invasions were happening in small numbers across Victoria “they are appalling crimes which take a huge toll on their victims and impact communities”. “The community expects that police will have the powers and resources they need to target these criminals – and that’s exactly what we’re giving them.”

Greens eye shire Continued from Page 1 “If elected I will not claim any expenses from the allowance that councillors seem to believe is an entitlement.” Meanwhile, the current council was last week again unable to decide on a new expenditure policy due to an administrative bungle. After missing out on being adopted by one vote at a meeting on 22 August the policy, which lifts a councillor’s allowable expenses to $30,000 each four-year term, looked set to be approved. But then the special meeting scheduled for Monday 29 August failed to meet the required seven days’ public notice and had to be adjourned to this week, Monday 5 September. “This is all shaping up as an abuse of council processes,” Cr Fraser told The News on Tuesday last week. “This will be the fourth attempt by management to force through council this revisionist draft councillor expenses policy before the preelection caretaker period cuts in late September. “All this silly manoeuvring will be of interest to the Ombudsman currently investigating transparency of local government decision making in the shire.”

Peninsula in top 6 for animal cruelty Stephen Taylor steve@mpnews.com.au

Ralph returns to the fold

MORNINGTON Peninsula ranked sixth out of Victoria’s 79 local council areas for animal cruelty, according to a list of hotspots released by RSPCA Victoria. Of the 11,840 cruelty reports across the state in 2015-16, 366 were involved the welfare of animals on the peninsula. RSPCA Victoria CEO Dr Liz Walker said that geographic analysis of cruelty reporting data will support efforts to focus on the areas that need it most. “Our vision is ending cruelty to all animals – and we know that prevention is the key to ending cruelty,” she said. “Over the next 12 months we will be using this data to help identify areas that would benefit most from community education and support.” Welfare concerns for dogs, cats and horses continued to make up most issues reported to the RSPCA. Of the 366 reports received from the peninsula, 157 related to dogs (six to puppies); 21 to cats (nine to kittens); and 108 to horses. Of the issues reported on the peninsula 103 related to hygiene, grooming and housing conditions; 117 concerned underweight animals; 106 involved sick and injured animals not receiving vet treatment; 68 concerned animals with insufficient food, 59 with insufficient water and 44 with insufficient shelter; 51 concerned abandoned animals, and 33 were about animals being beaten or wounded. “Even one cruelty issue is one too

many, yet the number of reports we receive is steadily increasing every year,” Dr Walker said. “We know that the community is becoming more concerned about animal

welfare, which may be part of the reason for the continued rise in reports. “What is particularly disturbing is the fact that many of the issues reported to us involve very basic animal

RALPH the lamb is back. Defying “million-to-one odds” the black-faced lamb made it home to the Big Goose children’s farm in Moorooduc on Friday morning, much to the relief of owner Justin Orr. The five-week-old bottle-fed lamb survived 13 nights out in the wild after disappearing from the MorningtonTyabb Rd animal park, overnight Sunday 21 August. An overjoyed Mr Orr, left, said Ralph ran up to road workers putting up road signs in Tyabb about seven kilometres from where he was allegedly dumped by thieves. They recognised him from media reports and contacted the farm. The lamb has distinctive markings with a black face and ears and round black spot on his right cloven hoof. “I wouldn’t have put much money on him surviving,” Mr Orr admitted. “But he’s looking pretty good and we are bottle feeding him small amounts of milk to get him back to normal. We will get him to the vet this afternoon.” Detectives on Wednesday arrested a 21-year-old Moorooduc man and charged him with theft, handling stolen goods and animal cruelty. He will appear at Frankston Magistrates’ Court on 4 November. A Cranbourne man, 25, and Tyabb man, 21, were also arrested but have been released pending further inquiries. Ralph was named following a competition run by the park. Detectives had been told Ralph was dumped in a paddock on the Mornington-Tyabb Rd, near the intersection of Coolart Rd, Moorooduc. His return was described as a “miracle” by Detective Senior Sergeant Miro Majstorovic. Stephen Taylor

welfare matters, such the way animals are being housed and fed.” Fifteen council areas received more than 300 animal cruelty reports last financial year, making up almost half

of the total reports. Casey Council received 566 complaints; Geelong 554, Melbourne 479, Yarra Ranges 460, Bendigo 369, Mornington Peninsula 366, Hume 362 and Frankston 359.

NEWS DESK Danger at sea for older boaters OLDER boaters are much more likely to find themselves in trouble when out on the water than youngsters, according to Maritime Safety Victoria’s latest incident statistics. Figures for 2015-16 show the most likely cause of them being in the water is capsizing their boat. In just two days in early August, five people in two different incidents found themselves immersed in cold water after they capsized and none of them was able to call for help immediately. Of the five, four were aged 60 or over and their two boats had capsized, which continued the trend identified in the MSV statistics. Three of the five were off Merricks in Western Port and the other two were in Port Phillip. All managed to either swim to safety or were helped by other boat owners. Maritime Safety director Peter Corcoran said boaters should have some way of raising the alarm when they go out. “The five people rescued were all wearing lifejackets, which is the first step to surviving when you fall into the water,” he said. “Step two is having a means of raising the alarm that will work when and where you need it. Don’t rely on your mobile phone or being seen. “Wearing a comfortable, well-fitted lifejacket that has been serviced will give you time to raise the alarm or wait for help and could be the difference between life and death. “Last year there were nine fatalities – a number I want to see going down and not up.” Stephen Taylor

Artist wires up scarecrow for festival Stephen Taylor steve@mpnews.com.au WIRE sculptor Annie Glass is patiently bending and winding galvanised steel wire around her first scarecrow as a tribute to the classic children’s movie the Wizard of Oz. “I’ve always wanted an opportunity to do something artistic based around my favourite movie,” Glass said. Her larger-than-life scarecrow will have an Australian flavour with a cocky flying around him, a crow on his arm and Dorothy’s dog Toto nipping at his heels. Glass is building her scarecrow for the inaugural Artist’s Permanent Sculpture category in the Hinterland Scarecrow Festival Trail, 16 September-3 October. For the first time, there’s a $2000 prize package for artists to be part of the festival and they can create a permanent sculpture that is traditional or relates to the Aussie Icon theme. It must be made out of durable materials, such as metal, stone, fibreglass, wire or wood, and be suitable for the outdoors. “I started with a metal frame covered with chicken wire and now I’m adding the detail and personality,” Glass said. “I like the interaction between animals and people and I also like to add movement and humour to my work. I find people identify with my work easily as it reminds them of their childhoods.” Glass moved to Red Hill earlier this year with her husband Rick and their three children to set up her business.

“There’s so much open space down here to work and it’s inspiring,” she said. If artists live outside the hinterland region, festival organisers will find a temporary home for their sculpture in either Red Hill, Red Hill South, Main Ridge, Arthurs Seat, Balnarring, Merricks , Merricks North and inland near Dromana for the festival’s duration. Scarecrows can be linked on the festival website for the artist to negotiate sales directly with potential buyers. As well as the $1500 first prize, the winning scarecrow can be loaned to the festival organisers and be displayed in the Red Hill Community Park for up to two years for the community to enjoy, subject to council approval. Artists and anyone wanting to make a scarecrow for the festival can register online at scarecrowfestival.org.au The 2016 Artist’s Scarecrow competition is a forerunner for a planned permanent scarecrow sculpture trail for the hinterland region. It is sponsored by the Mornington Peninsula Shire’s Arts & Culture unit and run by the Hinterland Tourism Association.

Union calls out firefighters on response times Stephen Taylor steve@mpnews.com.au

Limited tenure: While the Eagle gondolas will soon be running up and down Arthurs Seat, these sulphur crested cockatoos have made a home in a nearby pruned and ringbarked eucalypt. Picture: Yanni

Eagle takes over from Skylift THE new cable car ride at Arthurs Seat has been officially named Eagle. Known as Skylift throughout relatively short but controversial history, the gondola ride to and from the summit is set to begin carrying passengers in early December. The name Eagle was announced at a “brand launch” on Monday, along with the message that passengers will be provided with a bird’s eye view of parts of the Mornington Peninsula and Melbourne. Total cost of the project started in October 2015 is now being put at more than $20 million. The ride’s 24 Swiss made gondolas can each hold eight passengers on the 15-minute journey

up or down Arthurs Seat. “There is no better way to communicate the scope of this gondola journey than to give it a name that its riders can truly connect with,” Arthurs Seat Skylift CEO Hans Brugman said. “The Eagle name invokes how our guests will feel as they smoothly soar over the state ark, getting a bird’s eye view of the bay and the peninsula, right across to the city and further afield.” Mr Brugman said the Eagle would create more than 60 new jobs, including ticket sellers, cafe staff and lift attendants. Details of a competition being held to choose someone to be the Eagle’s first passenger are at aseagle.com.au.

FIRE fighting response times by several CFA brigades near Frankston and on the Mornington Peninsula are not up to scratch, the Inquiry into Bushfire Preparedness at state parliament was told last week. This damning claim has come from the United Firefighters’ Union which is at loggerheads with the CFA and volunteer firefighters over a contentious EBA. Response timelines were provided during last week’s inquiry into the state’s preparedness for the summer bushfire threat. The UFU said the required CFA response time for getting a truck to an emergency was eight minutes, with brigades from Mt Martha failing to meet this benchmark 69 per cent of the time, Skye 62 per cent, Rye 60 per cent, Dromana 53 per cent, Keysborough 43 per cent, Mt Eliza 35 per cent and Edithvale 27 per cent. The union said brigades in increasingly urbanised areas in Melbourne’s east were failing to meet the CFA standard up to 80 per cent of the time, while the Mt Martha brigade was the peninsula’s worst performer at 69 per cent. The union said the data, which covered the period 1 January 2015-1 January 2016, had come from the CFA. A spokeswomen for the CFA would not comment on the figures, saying she was checking their veracity.

The News was referred to the March 2015 Victorian Auditor-General’s Report into emergency services response times, which claimed the CFA responded to emergencies at, or close to, target response times. However, this does not point to the performance of the specific brigades singled out by the UFU. Firefighters’ secretary Peter Marshall said the UFU was “not trying to denigrate the role of volunteer firefighters” by releasing the data. “We do, however, believe that the reality of the situation facing many regional communities and much of outer metropolitan Melbourne needs to be revealed to the public,” he said. “The simple fact is that when there is an incident in a medium urban area many brigades are consistently failing to meet the eight minute service delivery standard which is designed to ensure the protection of life and property.” Mr Marshall said it was “not good enough to turn a blind eye when lives are at risk”. “Service delivery standards are the pre-defined response times allowed for a brigade to respond to an emergency incident and have the best chance of preventing loss of life and protecting property. “In 2009 the CFA asked for 684 additional career firefighters. Volunteer brigades around the state need the back-up of full-time, paid firefighters. “The CFA’s own data shows the organisation’s alarming failures to meet response times. This is not the fault of volunteers. The previous state Liberal government cut $66 million out of the CFA.”

Held in conjunction with Equitana Melbourne, the challenge involves the allocation and schooling of brumbies caught in the wild by professional and amateur trainers. The unhandled and untrained horses, humanely caught as part of an ongoing national park management program, will be gentled and, if old enough, saddle trained over a 150-day period in the lead up to the competition. Mornington professional horse trainer Lara Poynton is well into her

brumby training. She trains unhandled horses through to advanced training, and believes the best way to improve a horse is through recognising and rewarding one-per-cent improvements. Poynton and her brumby VBA Sansa will take part in the four-day Equitana and showcase their philosophies and skills to demonstrate the trainability and versatility of the breed. The event will showcase endurance, western, show jumping, trick and

brumbies to town pleasure riding. Victorian Brumby Association president Colleen O’Brien says taking the animals from wild to wonderful is a “heartening, exciting and emotional process that leaves spectators wanting more”. “Trainers regularly keep fans up to date with blogs on the website and on social media, so everyone has a chance to learn about each animal’s personality, quirks and habits through the voice of their trainer” she said. Trainers can later buy “their” horses, or sell them in a pre-approved auction to vetted buyers. This year 18 trainers will take part in the rid-

den section and six in yearling preparation. The road to professional horse training hasn’t been easy for Poynton, who says she fell off 148 times before realising there was a better way to approach riding a horse. Now she is looking to promote safe and effective training techniques that not only work for brumbies but for horses around the world. The finals of the challenge will be held 17-20 November at the Melbourne Showgrounds. Trainer profiles and their journeys with the horses can be followed online at australianbrumbychallenge.com.au

Solving a kayaker’s obstacles on the Murray Keith Platt keith@mpnews.com.au PAUL Lucas has done a bit of yachting, but travelling thousands of kilometres down the Murray River was never on his radar. But for 89 days from 1 March that’s exactly what he did. Steering a tinny powered by a small outboard Mr Lucas was trailing behind a kayak being paddled by Dave Jacka. Onshore, the pair were in turn being shadowed by friends following the winding course of the Murray as best they could by road. What sounds like a reasonable and enjoyable enterprise for a bunch of friends had one major difference: Dave Jacka is a quadriplegic with just six per cent of full bodily function. For his trip down the Murray Jacka’s hands were taped to the paddle and he had to be hand fed by his support crew every 15 of the 2226 kilometre trip. A quadriplegic since a motorbike accident when aged 19, Jacka is no stranger to tackling difficult feats. He has flown solo around Australia in a light plane and piloted solo a microlight trike. Jacka’s abilities far exceed his disabilities. He represented Australia in the 1996 Paralympics, was awarded an Order of Australia Medal (2015) for his contribution to people with a disability through sport and is a motivational speaker, giving advice and encouragement on overcoming challenges and dealing with change.

All aboard: Quadraplegic Dave Jacka kayaked 2226 kilometres down the Murray with the help of friends and an electronic device from Solve, a disability support group.

Paul Lucas, of Mornington, joined Jacka’s Murray enterprise after meeting through the organisation Solve Disability Solutions, whose volunteer engineer, handymen and tradesmen members like nothing better to do than design and make equipment to help the disabled. Solve’s answer to Jacka’s inability to use his feet to steer the kayak was to build an electronic “suck-puff” device that moved the rudder either

left or right. It was based on a similar device Jacka used to change the revs of his plane during his flight around Australia. “I’ve been with Solve for five years and this was the most satisfying project so far, and I also got to see the equipment in use,” Mr Lucas said after his return from the river. Heritage awards focus on trade skills ENTRIES in this year’s Mornington Peninsula Heritage Awards focused on professional and trade heritage skills. The awards – a partnership between Mornington Peninsula Shire and the National Trust – demonstrations of excellence in heritage in a range of categories. The mayor Cr Graham Pittock and National Trust Board chairman Kristin Stegley made the presentations in the Mornington council chambers on Friday 2 September. Judy Walsh, of the trust’s peninsula branch, said the recipients had been “outstanding in their attention to detail and sensitivity to the differing conservation requirements, or sense of place, at the core of heritage. Recipients over the past five years have included the restoration of a 1880s Welsh slate cottage roof in Mornington by Apex Roofing and the Ray Pedersen using his gilding skills at the Somerville memorial. This year’s nominations included an award to CDA Design Group, Lotus Landscapes and Artlab Australia for the restoration of the Crosby Memorial Outdoor Chapel at YMCA’s Camp Manyung, Mt Eliza. St Peter’s Anglican Church Mornington was also awarded, along with architects Susan and Peter Ackland for their restoration of the parish’s Bellamy Hall, originally designed by peninsula architects Chancellor & Patrick in the 1960s. Rye Historical Society restored an exterior heritage colour scheme to its meeting rooms, while Penny and Clive Blazey, along with stonemason Michael Wood, were acknowledged for their lime mortar restoration of historic Heronswood, Dromana. Sense of place was recognised with an award to John Dyke, of Context Pty Ltd, for the installation of interpretive signage at Police Point Shire Park, adjacent to the Quarantine Station at Portsea. The Individual award this year went to a visual presentation honouring soldiers killed in action in WWI. Blairgowrie resident Peter Munro’s ‘Sons of Sorrento’ is described as unusual in that it is a visual interpretation available on a memory stick or DVD for education purposes. The awards will be on display in the Mornington Library window 3-17 October.

Award wins: top, Camp Manyung’s restored outdoor Charles Crosby Memorial Chapel, YMCA Camp, Mt Eliza; above, Heronswood’s restored section of lime mortar to the exterior stone walls; left, Peter Munro beside the Rolls of Honour at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra, including the names of the three “Sorrento Boys.

Need for caring councillors not company directors So Cr David Gibb from Seawinds ward believes that “being a councillor is the equivalent of being a company director and it is “appropriate to pay councillors to undertake professional courses ( “Expenses set to increase The News 30/08/16). We all know that company directors love lots of perks and the poor suffering ratepayers of Mornington Peninsula Shire provide just that for our indulgent councillors who continually argue over their expense allowances, like car mileage rates and childcare costs. We just want caring local councillors to represent us and we don’t get that from a corporate structure made up of would-be company directors. Use your vote wisely in the October Council elections. Laurie Batiste, Somers

and energy into the running of the council. The Greens approach of six to go certainly rings my bells and, with the rest of the rusted on rump Cr Anne Shaw, Cr Antonella Celi, Cr David Garnock, Cr Bev Columb and Cr Andrew Dixon still holding on - surely the ratepayers and residents of the peninsula deserve better representation? Lack of transparency, inability to get back to constituents regarding queries, poor communication of planning intentions and in some cases debatable adherence to the code of conduct, are all signs that these councillors should very seriously consider not standing and allowing new people to have a go. Ian Morrison, secretary Mornington Peninsula Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association

Need for ethics, honesty

And in Frankston

Sometimes I derive great humour from the antics of our Mornington Peninsula Shire councillors; sometimes great despair. But Cr David Gibb had me guffawing with laughter and in great despair, simultaneously, when he stated that “being a councillor was the equivalent of being a company director ( “Expenses set to increase The News 30/08/16). He had us ratepayers pay for his director’s course and he may well be gone from the council’s “boardrooms forever after the next election. If any course is needed it is a course in ethics and honesty, particularly if we look at the fact that we pay rates in exchange for services like garbage collection and disposal. The council now charges us a levy of nearly $200 for garbage collection and disposal - or perhaps it’s really for trips to Paris or huge expense accounts, more than company directors in the real world get. Brian A Mitchelson, Mornington

Tick for tip The council decision to extend the working life of the Rye tip is a victory for common sense (“Rye tip a key part of waste plan The News 30/8/16). The idea that trucking waste to a distant landfill that happens to be in a different local government area is somehow going to reduce greenhouse emissions is beyond ludicrous. Working together with nearby councils to find a viable long term solution is clearly the way to go. And John Cain, the new Senate voting system is clearly more democratic, something I would have expected you to support (“Senate a worry Letters 30/8/16). The large and messy cross bench is mostly due to the government’s decision to call a double dissolution. Simon Westfold, Bittern

Time to go One down and five to go. While Cr David Gibb has done sterling service for the people of the Mornington Peninsula, he is correct in deciding not to stand and to allow some fresh ideas

Ratepayers have a wonderful opportunity to elect a new crop of councillors in the forthcoming elections. A clean sweep with fresh faces is obviously the best for Frankston ratepayers. It’s time all Frankston councillors hang up their hats. Not all councillors have been disruptive, but most have put personal views ahead of ratepayers. Repeated reports of infighting has put councillors on notice, almost being sacked, with administrators being appointed. There is no point in crying more of the same and electing the same old. Do the right thing and vote for change. Vic Langsam, Frankston

Hillside roar It seems that, with the lighter evenings and balmier days, everyone is enjoying the bucolic bliss of the Mornington Peninsula’s hinterland. Unfortunately, this time of year also heralds the season that is filled with people who think that the way to best enjoy the countryside is to ride as fast and as noisily as possible on motorcycles. Not only are these riders going too fast, often racing in rather intimidating groups but, for people on horses, the raucous racket could prove lethal. The government can and should eliminate noisy “race exhausts by enforcing the Australian Design Rules for Vehicles [ADR 83/00 External Noise]. Similarly, the police should also prosecute those who continue to ride with such abandon. There are places to race motorcycles and the peninsula is not the venue. Russell Kenery, Red Hill

Library loses heart New carpet, new automatic loans computers, but few staff. This is the new era of Our Library, reported by the mayor at a recent Mornington Peninsula Shire Council meeting as “the most popular service offered by the shire. The friendly buzz of activity has gone and the opportunity to chat about books or movies with library staff has gone. How quickly the library experience has changed – now it is merely a

Artists are their own attraction MORNINGTON Peninsula artists have adopted the logo design of one of their own to attract visitors to their galleries. "The visual environment is everything to an artist. To be surrounded by what we have here on the peninsula is nothing short of a miracle. We need our visitors to understand this important correlation between our work and the surroundings which inspire us, Susan Swenser, a graphic designer for 20 years, said of her design. Rosebud-based Swenser says her logo design

sought to capture the peninsula’s natural beauty – land and sea. The logo will be used to publicise the Peninsula Studio Trail which runs over two weekends in November. The trail takes in 18 studios where visitors can meet the artists and see them at work. Their studios will open 10am-5pm Saturday and Sunday 12, 13, 19, 20 November. To trot out the fact that Saudi Arabia has no regard for human rights as a justification for our deplorable treatment of refugees, shows how confused Bernard is when it comes to the concept of concentration camps in Australia. Why do our leaders not condemn the way our allies behave towards their own people? Is it because our treatment of the powerless in our society is not far removed from these regimes behaviour? Rupert Steiner, Balnarring Beach

Killing them softly No, Bernard Kalken Johnston, human rights are not a matter of degrees (“Illogical comparisons Letters 30/8/16). Human rights should be an absolute, and Australia’s present government and opposition are treating people in our concentration camps as not deserving of these rights. I grant you that under the Nazis people were killed in great numbers in the cruellest of ways. But Killing people slowly by pushing them to hopeless despondency or destroying them mentally just for being refugees and asking for protection from persecution, is not far removed from the excesses of historical dictators. The cruellest thing about all this [is that] our government doesn’t feel any guilt about destroying the potential of young children in these concentration camps by punishing the innocent for being alive. How can Bernard not see that all of us Australians are terribly diminished by the actions of our government and the opposition?

The Turnbull Government is putting forward a bill this week to slash $1 billion from ARENA (the Australian Renewable Energy Agency), one of our most innovative and successful renewable energy programs. It could spell the death of dozens of exciting renewable projects and thousands of clean energy jobs across the country. So much for supporting new industries: Flinders MP Greg Hunt mentions in his latest newsletter “industry policy is not about choosing between the so-called ‘old’ and ‘new’ industries, it is about government working with all sectors to create the best opportunities for businesses. I mean, let’s make sure to cut off any funds that might create industries and jobs of the future. Joe Lenzo, Safety Beach

Long wait until ships come in – if ever Keith Platt keith@mpnews.com.au THE first report by Infrastructure Victoria into the best site for Victoria’s second container port is scheduled to go to the state government in May 2017. The two options being investigated are Hastings in Western Port and Bay West in Port Phillip, but Infrastructure Victoria has cautioned that “evidence we gather may not be conclusive enough to identify a preferred location. “We won’t reduce government’s strategic flexibility by making a premature recommendation now, particularly because it would be based on evidence that is likely to change. “The final decision to invest in a second container port is still likely to be a number of years away, so deciding on its location is not necessary until this time. The government agency has stated that it sees expanding existing ports or building new ones “a last option. It says the smarter approach is to make better use of existing assets, including port road and rail links, and to manage demand, such as spreading truck movements more evenly throughout the day and night. Infrastructure Victoria has also warned that both Hastings and Bay West require “significant dredging, reclamation of land (creating new land using dredge material), and construction of land transport connections. Environment impacts of developing either site will not be made in time for

next year’s report as “both sites are located in or adjacent to environmentally-sensitive areas. Details of Infrastructure Victoria’s investigation into Victoria’s future port needs were released last week in the discussion paper “Preparing advice on Victoria’s future ports capacity. The report says the annual rate of increased container traffic being handled at Melbourne has levelled out over the past few years and now sits at less than three million a year. It says the port’s limit is eight to seven million containers a year (Victorian Ports Strategic Framework, 2004),

although in 2010 the government believed a second container port was needed by the late 2020s, with Hastings seen as the preferred location. Times and governments have changed and the current Labor government swung away from Hasting to favour Bay West. Notwithstanding which site is best, Infrastructure Victoria says it would take up to 15 years for a port to be up and running and that, if built, it should be done in stages to avoid overspending. Its costings for Bay West and Hastings will be based on a new port able to handle three million containers at

first and have the capability of being expanded for up to six or 10 million containers. However, Infrastructure Victoria’s report keeps referring back to the reason for its investigation as being if and when a new container port is needed. The report also mentions redistributing the types of cargoes handled at the existing ports of Hastings, Geelong and Portland. “The most important thing to acknowledge about planning for future commercial port capacity is the high degree of uncertainty about future conditions, the report states.

“Our main focus is on the need for, and timing of, a second container port, and where it might be located. In preparing our advice we will also consider the possible relocation of other trades between Victoria’s ports (for example, motor vehicles, chemicals, grain, break bulk cargo and fuel) or terminals for cruise ships, and what factors may drive any relocation. “Reducing uncertainty while preserving flexibility is the key driver in our analysis of the timing for investment in new ports capacity. In the short to medium term, allowing the Port of Melbourne to grow to its largest feasible capacity is the most costeffective way of meeting increased Victorian container throughput. “Maximising existing ports’ capacity ensures a second port is built only when it is needed. “The scope set out by government is clear. We need to provide advice on when to invest in extra container port capacity, and where – at either a Hastings or Bay West location, Infrastructure Victoria’s CEO Michel Masson said when releasing the discussion paper. “We will consider a range of aspects in preparing our advice, including the environmental, economic and social impacts of developing a new port. “In some areas, we are not starting from scratch. We will consider any existing work provided to us on the previous assessments of these sites, and undertake technical investigations where there are gaps in our knowledge. The discussion paper is available at yoursay.infrastructurevictoria.com.au

State ready to take helm at Port of Hastings Keith Platt keith@mpnews.com.au THE state government appears to be getting ready to take over the day-today running of the Port of Hastings. The 20-year contract with port manager Patrick Ports Hastings ends next June and the government is awaiting a report on management options from the Port of Hastings Development Authority. The authority now has a staff of eight, far fewer than the 61 – including 31 contractors – it employed just two years ago when the previous Liberal National coalition government was proceeding with plans for a container terminal at Hastings.

Those plans ended abruptly with the election of the Daniel Andrews-led Labor government, which said a decision on where to locate the state’s next major port would rest on advice from Infrastructure Victoria. Time lines for a container port being built at Hastings, if ever, are now put at 15 to 30 years. Latest figures show the port is now visited each year by 50 “big ships (50,000-100,000 tonnes) and 100 “small ships (100-2000 tonnes). However, the government says Hastings “offers significant development opportunities for bulk industries including the refined fuel, oil and gas industries. That statement was made in a 1 April

news release announcing the appointment of Malcolm Geier as CEO of the Port of Hastings Development Authority. Mr Geier took over from long term former Mornington Peninsula Shire CEO, Michael Kennedy, whose interim appointment saw him replace the authority’s first CEO, Mike Lean. “Mr Geier brings to the role substantial qualifications following a successful 10 years at the Port of Portland, with the last six years as business development manager during a major growth period which saw significant increases in exports and volume, the April news release issued by Mr Donnellan’s office stated. In the past couple of weeks the authority has cut its staff from 13 to eight.

The latest round of cuts included the executive assistant, its engineering manager, procurement manager, IT manager and acting chief financial officer. Mr Geirer said “having the state manage the port was one of the options the port authority had investigated. He said the most recent shedding of five jobs ensured the authority “is the right size moving forward. “If the state took over the port we would need to add nine staff, mirroring what’s there [employed by Patricks] now, Mr Geier said. Patrick’s has 10 staff based at Stony Point, including harbourmaster Shane Vedamuttu, who has been there for 15 years, assistant harbourmasters, and

office and maintenance staff. “I don’t know when the government will make its decision, but we will soon be submitting information to the state, Mr Geirer said. He said the port authority’s role was to “use public money efficiently, make sure we do. The Port of Hastings includes piers and wharves managed by Patrick at BlueScope Steel and Long Island Point, Hastings, and the Crib Point and Stony Point jetties. Patrick Ports also manages Western Port’s channels and the port waters. Stony Point is also used by ferries servicing French and Phillip islands and for berthing harbour tugs.

Eyes have it on crime Stephen Taylor steve@mpnews.com.au A WALL of closed-circuit television screens at Frankston police station is part of the latest strategy to fight street crime. The CCTV cameras, capturing footage in high resolution to clearly identify offenders, have been installed in the divisional operation support office to focus in on crime as it happens in the street, shopping centres, train station or foreshore. Backed by Frankston Council, the camera bank is manned by police officers who may be returning to work after injury, or others unable to work on the front line, but who still want to be part of the action. They provide proactive real-time monitoring of known trouble spots. Officers can flick between locations to identify troublemakers, or radio police on the beat or in patrol cars to watch a suspect, then continue tracking suspects by switching cameras to different locations – and even watch inside shopping centres. A search function on the cameras allows police to find a man, say, wearing a “green backpack” or “red overcoat”. The cameras can focus on “people known to police”. The new surveillance cameras bring Frankston’s CCTV network to 50 cameras in addition to hundreds already in place at Bayside Shopping Centre. Frankston mayor Cr James Dooley said the network would have a positive impact on the preventative aspects of policing across Frankston. “It’s far better to prevent a crime than make a prosecution,” he said. “We can get a good idea of what is going on simply by using our resources smarter.” Cr Dooley says the CCTV strategy drew on experiences of similar operations at Geelong, Broadmeadows and Dandenong police stations and had

been a “long time coming”. “Frankston police were receptive to the idea and the community has been asking for them for a long time.” Acting Senior Sergeant Glenn Michie said the cameras provided more front-line service support – not back-office support.” Cr Dooley said the state-of-the-art cameras are a “remarkable improvement on previous models”. “The accompanying computer software technology that drives them and the real-time monitoring capability are set to have a real impact on crime prevention.” He said extra police and more effective preventative measures to reduce criminal activity have had a “positive influence on the public’s perception of Frankston, with 58 per cent of residents agreeing that the city is safe – up 6 per cent from 2012”.

“FINGERS” Mitchell Cullen with

“Council is determined to continue working proactively with the community and Frankston police to address concerns relating to crime, drug use and anti-social behaviour.” The council’s investment of $300,000 over the next four years has been complemented by a $160,000 grant from the federal government for a CCTV network along the Frankston waterfront and at the Belvedere shopping district. The Young St CCTV network will also be improved as part of the state government’s commitment to delivering the Frankston station precinct redevelopment, Cr Dooley said. The mayor said council will contribute to ongoing running costs for the new cameras. Investments in Frankston’s CCTV network follow other community safety initiatives such as a safe taxi rank and graffiti removal programs.

Cafe a cut above the rest AWAITING the judges’ nod was not as nerve wracking this year as last year for Mornington restaurateur Jill Henderson at the Restaurant and Catering Association’s 2016 Awards for Excellence presentations. And her decision to avoid any stress paid off as her Winey Cow Restaurant in Main St won two awards – best regional cafe and cafe of the year – at a function at the Melbourne Function Centre last month. Cafe of the year is open to cafes and restaurants all over Victoria and Tasmania. “We entered the awards last year for the first time and, I must admit, I was more nervous then than this time around,” Ms Henderson said. “We didn’t win then but we had scored highly, so we knew we would go close. “Perhaps this year we had lowered our expectations a little bit for the regional awards and we knew we were in with a good chance. “But we certainly weren’t expecting to win cafe of the year and I was certainly nervous going into that.” The results were “exciting”, she said. “We really did well.” Winey Cow Restaurant beat 14 other restaurants in the regional awards finals and more in the overall finals, although the names and number of other entrants are kept secret. The judging process involved undercover judges assessing a broad range of factors, including the restaurant’s food, beverages, customer service, menu selection and eating environment. “We are a licenced cafe with brunch a speciality, but we offer a whole restaurant experience,” Ms Henderson said. “Our diners can have starters, mains and dessert or simply bring their laptop and work over a coffee and baguette. “A sommelier chose our wine list, a nutritionist designed our smoothies, while our barista, Craig Simon, is the only one on the peninsula serving his own brand of coffee. “We serve local food wherever we can – it’s a menu you can eat with your eyes.” Stephen Taylor

CRAFTED from West Australian sandstone, this magnificent rural-residential property combines the best of natural materials with a contemporary style and superb quality throughout. Enjoying a tranquil setting on about 6500 square metres in the always popular Kinfauns Estate, the home is set well back from the road privately ensconced amongst the trees. Wonderful timber decking features to all sides of the property which greatly increases the already considerable size of the home - there is also a four-car garage under the roof line - and certainly with the warmer months here will be an entertainer’s paradise on summer nights. A spectacular alfresco deck seamlessly

opens through concertina doors to a formal lounge which in itself is the true standout feature of the home. A massive sandstone wall dominates the room, with soaring cathedral ceilings and exposed beams equally majestic. Amongst the more contemporary stylings of the nearby dining, kitchen and family room, the rich spotted gum timbers used here create an amazing contrast that is absolutely breathtaking. The kitchen is another design marvel, answering every storage need with a host of soft-close cupboards and drawers. Appliances include a stainless-steel oven, range hood and double-drawer dishwasher with servery windows opening out to the verandah and outdoor entertaining area.

Three bedrooms all have built-in robes and share the main bathroom with spa bath, and a powder room. A separate study could be a fifth bedroom if required. The upstairs zone is a superb retreat for parents with an enormous main bedroom enjoying a private balcony which overlooks the property, a walk-in robe and the splendid ensuite has a frameless walk-in shower, twin vanities and a spa bath. There is a healthy amount of lawn area around the home for children and pets to really enjoy themselves and lowmaintenance landscaping to the front of the home includes native grasses and palm trees, with one particularly large palm tree a great focal point as you enter the property.

ALEX LLOYD’S GRAND PLANS

With more than 30 album releases so far, Liberation Blue makes a welcome return of the label’s ‘Acoustic’ series with our first long player for 2016: ‘Acoustica’, 12 stunning, re-worked classic tunes spanning the career of ARIA winner and multi-platinum singer/ songwriter Alex Lloyd. “It was certainly something I’d thought of doing before,” Lloyd says of the Acoustica recording, the singer’s seventh full-length release. With four

ARIAs already under his belt, Lloyd was intrigued with the concept of revisiting his older material. Expect to hear radio hits ‘Amazing’, ‘Coming Home’, ‘Beautiful’, ‘Black The Sun’ and more, his extensive catalogue getting a brand new lease of life. “This project came along at a perfect time for me,” says Lloyd. “Doing these recordings really helped create a spark in me – it’s been great to re-address these songs, and I’m really happy how

it’s turned out.” In celebration of this special and unique release, Alex has put together an intimate version of his band and will be heading out across Australia on a National Tour in September and October, where everyone will be able to hear these wonderful new interpretations themselves. Alex Lloyd is playing at Grand Mornington on Friday, September 30. Book online at www.grand.net.au

MP BREWERY TO RELEASE ITS SECOND NITRO CAN

THE DELTA RIGGS The video for “Never Seen This Before” showcases the high-octane, energy filled presence that The Delta Riggs bring, and previews the carnival atmosphere they’ll bring when they hit the road in September for a huge run of dates across the country. Joining les Riggs on tour will be Gideon Bensen, whose recently released debut EP “Cold, Cold Heart” draws a squiggly line from Loud Reed to Talking Heads, and never runs out of ink.

LP. Recorded in just nine days at The Grove Studios north of Sydney, the LP Features 12 cuts that run the gamut of musical genres from the Rolling Stones inspired “Surgery of Love”, the high-powered N*E*R*D infused “Baddest Mother F*cker in the Beehive”, and the disco rock of “Never Seen This Before”.

Active Galactic, produced by the band and Jason Hollis, will be The Riggs’ third studio

Book online at www.grand.net.au

The Active Galactic Tour, presented by Triple J, will hit The Grand Hotel in Mornington on 7 October.

Following on from the success of their first nitrogenated (Nitro) canned beer earlier in the year, Mornington Peninsula Brewery has followed up with #tinnage006, Sacchariferous Stout on Nitro. Utilising nitrogen rather than carbon dioxide (CO2) to carbonate beer provides the beer with a creamier, smoother texture which complements this style of beer perfectly. Sacchariferous Stout is a sweet/milk stout brewed using lactose in the brewing process, hence the name Sacchariferous, meaning containing sugar. The nitrogen dosing adds to the smooth mouthfeel of the beer, and at 4.6% ABV, it is a very approachable stout. The brewing team at MPB have coined the phrase ‘vertically with enthusiasm’ to encourage customers not to dilly dally when pouring. Because nitrogen reacts differently than CO2 when the can is opened, it requires a vertical and unbridled transfer into the glass. Although this is counter-intuitive to the

STRASSMAN’S BACK

gentle style we are accustomed to, it provides the best taste and texture. If you are lucky enough to get your hands on this limited edition run, get ready to pour vertically and vigorously. It is available from Thursday 25 August and continues to demonstrate Mornington Brewery’s capabilities.

With everyone connected to social media and the internet 24/7, will Strassman get them back under control? Strassman’s iTedE introduces an amazing new technology that brings the world’s most advanced Puppetronics to the stage. 100 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK...

Mrs Orsino dies after long illness Compiled by Melissa Walsh THE many friends of Mr and Mrs G. Shepherd, of Somerville will regret to hear of the death of their eldest daughter, Mrs Orsino, which occurred at Somerville on Monday last. The deceased has been in ill health for some considerable time. *** CR A. J. Allen, was elected President of the Shire of Frankston and Hastings at their meeting held on Thursday last. *** MESSRS Brody and Mason will hold their monthly sale at Somerville, on Wednesday next, when they expect a good yarding. *** THE friends of Major Stuart Balmain, of Coolart, Balnarring, will be interested to hear that he has been appointed D.A.A.G. of General Gough’s staff in France. *** IT is thought that the majority of nearly forty eight thousand votes in favor of Miss Jolly, as queen of the Allies Fair, constitutes a record majority for any Queen yet elected, not only in Victoria, but Australia. *** AT the Court of Petty Sessions at Frankston on Monday, there was only one case called up, that of a person travelling on the railway between Frankston and Seaford without a ticket. The accused was let off with a 20s fine. *** THE Gibson Pantomime Comedy Company will give an entertainment

in the Frankston Mechanics’ Hall, on Wednesday 28th inst. The company is well spoken of by the press, and those who attend should enjoy a pleasant evening’s amusement. *** THE annual meeting of the Somerville Fruitgrowers’ Association will be held on Monday next in the Mechanics’ Institute, at 8 p.m, when the following business will be brought forward :— report and balancesheet, election of officers, and cool stores report. *** INFORMATION came to hand last week, and was with sorrow received, that Driver M. J. Farrell, A. I. F. had died of wounds received in France, on 31st July. The deceased was well and favorably known in Frankston, and prepared Zephuron for his record Grand National victory, as well as Nilka, Bill Brandon, and Westdale, for the various races. *** THE quarterly meeting of the “Star of Peace” I O.R Lodge (junior members) was held on the 3rd inst, taking the form of a social gathering. After the business had been dealt with, the boys sat down to an excellent, supper. Mrs M’Cormack, who was present, addressed the boys on “What our boys can do” which was well received. The latter part of the evening was spent in singing, and Master W. Baxter and Victor M’Comb contributed to the program, by giving two good recitations. Two new members were initiated, and the singing of the Na-

tional Anthem brought a very enjoyable evening, to a close. *** THE new Federal rolls are now being printed. Names which are received between now and 6 p.m. on 18th September will be printed on a supplementary roll. Persons whose claims for enrolment are received by the registrar after 6 p.m. on the 18th September will not have their names placed on the rolls till after the referendum has taken place. All persons who are entitled to enrolment and who are not already on the roll, are advised to secure enrolment at once, otherwise they will have no voice at the referendum, and will also render themselves liable to prosecution, under the Compulsory Enrolment Section of the Commonwealth Electoral Act, and to a fine not exceeding £2. *** THE names of the following peninsula soldiers appear in the casualty list lately published under the head of wounded :—Privates R. Davies, Frankston ; W. Evans, Langwarrin ; G. A. Heselman, Frankston ; J.Main, Hastings; W. R. Dyson, Dromana; W. G. Cavanagh, Balnarring; F. Garlick, Mornington ; L-Corporal A. R. Watson, Mornington ; Lieut. W. L. Cook, Flinders. Under the heading of killed appears the name of Private N. A O’Shannessy, Hastings. The missing list includes L-Corporal E. G. White, Sorrento, and Private W. A. Bond, Pearcedale. We regret also to announce that Mr D. P. Cain

received a wire from the Defence Department on Saturday last, that his son, Prirate W. Cain, was reported as missing. *** THE sum of £8 11s was remitted to the Y.M.C A fund this month from the Langwarrin Red Cross Branch. The next meeting, Thursday, 28th September, will be the annual one, at which all office bearers for a further term will be elected, and the future allocation of funds decided on. Collectors are specially asked to hand in their collecting books and in the best interests of the cause a good attendance of the public is necessary, if only to show appreciation of the fine results accomplished by the collectors for the past year, and also to all those ladies and gentlemen who have devoted so much time to the work connected with the positions held by them in the society. *** A FAREWELL and presentation concert will be held on October 14th. to honor Private Tom Stephenson, further particulars of which will appear later. *** MR Logan, who had resided at Langwarrin for many years, and was well known and respected, passed peacefully away on Tuesday evening last. Deceased who was 76 years of age had been ailing for some time, and his end, although sudden, was not altogether unexpected. A widow, three married daughters, (Mrs D.Petrie, and Mrs Bert Stevens,

of Frankston) and one son are left to mourn their loss. The remains were interred in the Melbourne cemnetery on Thursday. *** A STATE School concert, to provide funds for school requirements, is to be held at the Recreation Hall on Thursday, Sept 21st. As this concert promises something good, and the funds go towards a worthy cause, it is hoped that good results will be forthcoming. The Head Teacher, with the help of the school committee, intends to collect about ten pounds for the purpose of defraying the cost of a tablet inscribed with the names of those who have gone to the front from this district. The tablet will be placed in the school room, and it is arranged that the names of all soldiers who had enlisted from within a radius of three miles from the school, be placed on it. *** THE half yearly meeting of the Progress Association, will be held on Monday, Sept. 18th, at the usual meeting place, and a good attendance is desired to deal with important matters. *** THE Prime Minister’s announcement that there is to be no resort to conscription without appeal to the people by way of referendum, was received with very mixed feelings. *** From the pages of the Mornington Standard, 9 September, 1916

Stonecats hang on in epic PENINSULA LEAGUE

By Toe Punt IF it bleeds, you can kill it! That was a famous line used by arguably the greatest ever AFL footballer Leigh Matthews in 2001 when he was referring to his great Brisbane Lions side beating Essendon. For movie buffs, they’ll know he grabbed the line from Arnold Schwarzenegger in the movie Predator. Suffice to say that it can be used again in reference to the great Frankston YCW, a team that was wounded on Saturday in the second semi-final against Mt Eliza but as great sides do, still managed to win a thriller 18.7 (115) to 17.8 (110). What it proved to Peninsula football supporters is that the 2016 premiership is not a one horse race. That wasn’t the case at the halfway mark of the season when Mt Eliza was belted by the Stonecats at Wooralla Drive by almost 100 points. Mt Eliza were down and on the canvas early in the match when they trailed by as much as six goals. Every time they came at YCW the champs responded. Even in the last quarter when somehow Mt Eliza got their noses in front, YCW were able to steady the ship and get back out to a 20 point lead. However, what we saw late in the game was something we haven’t see from a side against YCW in the past. What people admire about the Stonecats is their ability to absorb pressure for long periods, physically and mentally wear down a side and perform for better longer – they have been doing it for more than a decade. Opposition in the past have failed to be able to go the distance. That changed on Saturday. Mt Eliza came storming home late to get within five points in an entertaining, high quality, intense game of football. At one end of the ground, YCW’s Anthony Bruhn was dominating with seven goals. At the other end, Justin Van Unen returned from a serious hamstring injury to boot seven goals. The midfield battles of Rohan Heasley and Lachy Wallace were a feature, both outstanding for their respective teams. The hard and tough Luke Collins and Dave Barton went toe to toe and were significant for their teams. Paul Minchington proved again how good a player he is, especially on the big stage and Scott McLeod and Kevin Lylak were at their best for the winners. Matt Lille had a tough job in the ruck for the Redlegs but rose to the occasion, Sam Gill led from the front and Jimmy Clayton almost received the ultimate celebration in his club record breaking 222nd game. The game had everything – freakish acts, selfless acts and 35 goals in a second semi – it was a crowd pleaser. The Stonecats got what they wanted though – a pathway straight to the grand final. Mt Eliza will need to front up again this Sunday in the Preliminary Final with a lot more work to do. Mt Eliza will play Pines in the Preliminary Final this Sunday after it smashed Bonbeach for the third time this season. Pythons forwards Aaron Edwards, Guy Hendry and Tim Bongetti dominated the Sharks, who overused the footy. The Sharks were blown away early and never got close to the Pythons. The top three are the last three standing in the Peninsula finals race. High five: Despite being pushed by Mt Eliza, Frankston YCW got across the line by five points. Blues and Bombers to square off in Granny NEPEAN LEAGUE By Toe Punt HASTINGS will play Frankston Bombers in the 2016 Nepean Division Grand Final this Saturday at Frankston Park after hanging on to win a thriller against Rosebud. The Blues have beaten Red Hill, Somerville and now Rosebud in the lead up to the big dance and have just one more top five side to beat to claim the 2016 title. The minor premiers Frankston are the only team to stand in their way, having the ideal preparation of a rest in week one of the finals and then another break after advancing through after winning their second semi-final. Hastings kicked the opening goal of the game and were never headed in the match despite being challenged, eventually winning 14.11 (95) to 12.16 (88). Blues coach Brendan Dunne told the RPP commentary team straight after the game that his side “had been building for the past six weeks” to get to this point. “The Sorrento match at home in tough, wet conditions was a defining moment for the group,” Dunne said. “We lose that match and our season could have gone the other way. We win and the season is set up for us. “It felt like something clicked within the group on that day and we haven’t really looked back. “We have been training extremely well, our performances have been a

lot more consistent and we have absolute buy in from the entire group about the way we want to play our footy. “There is a Hastings brand now and it’s taken three years to slowly build to get to this point,” Dunne said. The coach was absolutely superb throughout the match, leading the backline along with Paul Rogasch, both taking telling marks, laying important tackles and providing enormous structure and leadership during the tense final quarter. Dunne said his body was feeling the effects of running back with the flight of the ball one too many times, but conceded he wouldn’t swap the feeling for anything. “I’m grateful to be still playing and having an opportunity to win a premiership,” Dunne said. “I missed 21 weeks of work though injury last year and I thought that might have been it. I did the preseason, the body felt great and here I am now. It’s a really good feeling. “All we’ve done though is earn the right. It’s a good achievement to get there, but you don’t play to get there, you play to win it. We’ve got the opportunity,” Dunne said. Dunne was clearly one of Hastings’ best on Saturday, along with Rogasch and underrated full back Lance Brouwer, who is rarely beaten despite having some big jobs most weeks. The Hastings’ forward line again looked dangerous with Dale Alanis,

Luke Hewitt, Col McVeigh and Stevey Robb all kicking multiple goals. Robb lit up Tyabb in the final quarter. Hewitt could have put the opposition to the sword and should have finished with five or six goals. He was still outstanding though. Through the middle, Mark Devereaux and Pete Mawson got first use of the footy, Josh Mulheron competed well with Ben Dwyer and Shaun Foster, Luke Clark and Matt Clifford played the swing men roles to perfection, both reliable and damaging in all areas of the ground. Despite getting out to a four goal break deep in the last quarter, Rosebud never stopped coming. You have to take your hat off to the Buds. They were relentless and their leaders in Rhys Bancroft, Greg Bentley, Dwyer, Brenton Payne and Ryan Spooner willed their team to the finish line. The Downie brothers are bonafide stars! Keegan should be on an AFL Rookie List, such is his enormous talent. His aerial ability is breathtaking. He finished with three goals. His little brother Sean got belted from pillar to post but continued to pick himself up off the deck. Sean kicked a game-high four majors. Dale Stephens and Daniel Wilson were also stand outs for the Buds. It was a sensational season for Rosebud, given the calibre of players they lost during the pre-season. For Hastings, they are in the big dance against Frankston Bombers this Saturday at Frankston Park.

Are you at risk of falling? –We can help you FALLS are the leading cause of unintentional injury in older Australians. As well as physical injury, falls can cause loss of confidence and fear of falling, so over time, older people may become less active, which may increase their risk of falling. Evidence suggests falls can be prevented by exercising, modifying the environment (particularly at home) and reducing some medications. Vitamin D and calcium supplements can also reduce fall-related fractures. (State Government Victoria) In Victoria, falls accounted for almost three-quarters (72%) of injury related hospital admissions and more than half (53%) of injury related emergency department presentations (Clapperton & Fernando 2014). At St. John of God Frankston Rehabilitation Hospital, our evidence based falls prevention programs target the most at risk in our community. You don’t have to have experienced a fall to take part in a falls prevention program you may only be experiencing some balance problems and are at risk of sustaining a fall. Our multidisciplinary rehabilitation team will complete a comprehensive individual assessment and prescribe the right program for you. Our team is led by a rehabilitation physician and includes a physiotherapist, occupational therapist, nurse, dietician, social worker, psychologist and exercise physiologist. Our outpatient group program runs over six weeks with participants

attending twice per week. The education component will teach you what is important in preventing falls, whilst the exercise component will help you get fitter, stronger and improve your balance, thereby reducing the risk of falling. You will learn key strategies you can use at home or in the community and

many of our patients find they become more and more independent as their confidence grows with every session. Don’t let the fear of falling, impede your ability to venture out and enjoy life to the fullest. Make the first step, contact us and see what we can do to help reduce your risk of falling.

How do you attend our hospital? Inpatients – you can choose who provides your rehabilitation after your acute hospital stay. Simply ask to have your rehabilitation at our hospital and one of our Rehabilitation Assessment Nurses will visit you to plan your stay with us. Outpatients - A referral from your
