By day, Khalilah Birdsong is immersed in the frenetic world of entertainment, taking care of business at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta as a studio executive. Off the clock, she unleashes her inner artist in a timeless dimension of creative abandon, painting to her heart’s desire. “Four years ago I felt a strong urging to add creativity to my life in some way, shape or form. I wasn’t exactly sure what the outlet would be, but I found myself in the paint aisle of a craft store buying paint, brushes and small wooden birds,” Khalilah said. “The first stroke of paint across the bird’s wings woke me up and transported me to a calming yet charged place. I was hooked.” What started out as a relaxing hobby evolved into a professional endeavor for the gifted artist – complete with gallery representation and commission requests. While her paintings have drawn comparisons to those of abstract expressionists Alfred Leslie, Joan Mitchell and Jean-Paul Riopelle for their references to nature, Khalilah’s liberated brushstrokes reflect her own unique vision in a mesmerizing interplay of
color, shape, line and texture. She recently created several stunning large-scale canvases for Tony Conway’s incredible new special event space, Flourish. “Khalilah’s work is so profound, I didn’t hesitate when trying to decide on artwork for Flourish,” Conway said. Her talents have been admired by her work colleagues as well, with her paintings prominently featured on the set of Perry’s TV show “If Loving You Is Wrong.” “Khalilah has an understanding of color, composition and scale that some artists strive a lifetime to achieve,” said gallery owner Bill Lowe. “For her, it’s instinctual and natural. The result is painting that possesses remarkable vitality coupled with an intelligent, enigmatic quality.” Still, don’t expect her to quit her day job any time soon. “Tyler Perry Studios is a wonderful and inspiring place to work,” said Khalilah, an industry virtuoso who earned her BBA from Howard University. “I’m able to bring business skills to my painting practice that I’ve honed in my entertainment career, then segue into the calming creative process. I enjoy it all.”

He’s back! After attracting record crowds with his amazing artistry in a 2004 exhibit at the Atlanta Botanical Garden, Seattle glass guru Dale Chihuly returns this spring for his biggest outdoor show to date. “Chihuly in the Garden,” opening April 30, features over 20 dazzling installations throughout the garden’s 30-acre spread, with kaleidoscopic creations brilliantly blooming from the ground, dramatically suspended in the air and fantastically floating in water. Staggering in scope and size, each wondrous work is composed of hundreds of pieces of glass, including several new site-specific assemblages. Marking the 40th anniversary of the Atlanta Botanical Garden, the Chihuly exhibit will be on view through Oct. 30 with evening viewing available as well.

History in the Making Explore the beautiful Greek Revival mansion that has served as the Atlanta home for Georgia’s governors since 1968 in this new book penned by First Lady Sandra Deal, in collaboration with Kennesaw State University historians Catherine Lewis and Jennifer Dickey. “We had three goals when we began this project: recount the history of all the Georgia governor’s mansions, with specific focus on the West Paces Ferry Road mansion; document the rich collections in the mansion and share these resources with readers; and share behind-the-scenes stories from the eight first families who, so far, have known it best,” Sandra Deal wrote in the preface. “This history belongs to the people of the state of Georgia, and we are delighted to have the opportunity to share it.” Designed by Atlanta architect Thomas Bradbury, the Buckhead mansion is filled with Federal period furnishings and decorative arts, inspired by items chosen by Jacqueline Kennedy when she redecorated the White House 34

in the early 1960s. Most of the first-floor furnishings were made by American master craftsmen in the early 1800s. Deal said her curiosity was piqued when she and Gov. Nathan Deal moved into the home and walked the 18-acre grounds. “I was astounded.” She started asking questions to people in the know, from former first ladies Mary Perdue and Betty Sanders (who played a critical role in getting the mansion built, though she and Gov. Carl Sanders never lived in it) to longtime employees and volunteer docents, mansion manager Joy Forth and past curator Kitty Farnham. All were happy to share their knowledge and memories. “I learned so much about the mansion and its residents during the course of my research that I knew a book needed to be produced to preserve that history,” she wrote, adding that the Georgia Archives, Atlanta History Center, Special Collections at the University of Georgia, and Georgia State University were just a few of the many institutions that helped tell the story.

His goal is to unveil the horrific events damaging our planet’s health and wildlife, but boiled down to digestible bites to promote education and action. Psihoyos won an Oscar for his 2009 film, “The Cove,” a featurelength documentary that goes undercover to expose the yearly killing of dolphins in Taiji, Japan. In order to document the dolphin hunt, they employed tactics and technology never before used in a documentary. The film sparked worldwide reaction, but most importantly, Taiji’s annual cull of 23,000 dolphins is believed to have dropped to 6,000. This was the first film for Psihoyos’ Oceanic Preservation Society, which he cofounded in 2005. In their second film, “Racing Extinction,” special focus is brought to marine life again but on a wider scale, exposing China’s shark fin and Manta ray gill trade as well as the greater threat of oceanic acidification, the evil twin

of climate change, contributed to by the burning of fossil fuels. In order to uncover the truth behind the wildlife trade, he and his team go undercover in life-threatening situations, using covert-operations and false identities to infiltrate an enormous Chinese seafood wholesaler and to bust a Los Angeles restaurant for illegally selling whale meat. In a more hopeful scene, we are shown how change can happen, when a small Indonesian village is taught how to capitalize on a more lucrative tourism-driven economy, as opposed to the devastating hunting of Manta ray to supply China’s appetite for animal parts that are falsely believed to have medicinal benefits. In addition to the wildlife trade, manmade global warming from greenhouse gas emissions is contributing to a breakdown in the natural systems that support all life. “Racing Extinction” features interviews with prominent scientists like Dr. Stuart Pimm, a conservation ecologist at Duke University, warning us that half of all species will be extinct within 100 years if humanity does not change its ways. Wildlife simply cannot adapt to unprecedented changes in not only temperature, but weather, ocean chemistry and atmospheric composition. To illustrate the enormity of this problem, the team drives through Los Angeles with a specially-designed high-definition FLIR camera making carbon dioxide and methane emissions visible to the general public for the first time. “Racing Extinction” is full of cloak-and-dagger eco-activist operations, stunning visuals from iconic photographer Joel Sartore, and features a one-of-its-kind Tesla driven by racecar driver Leilani Münter. Sartore, a National Geographic photographer, has captured on film 5,500 of the world’s most endangered species in captivity for his Photo Ark (joelsartore.com). the Photo Ark Exhibit at the National Geographic Museum (nationalgeographic.com). Combining this incredible group of highly-skilled people with an action-packed approach, Psihoyos seeks to break barriers in the documentary genre and reach new audiences. Interviewed by Ecowatch’s Stefanie Spear, Psihoyos describes “with a film you can have a chance to change somebody’s heart and that’s what we want to do. The science shows that you don’t change behavior by getting people to think differently, you change people’s behavior by getting them to feel differently. That’s what we’re doing with this film, first we break people down, get people to have a little bit more compassion for other species and then build it up from there so they internalize that hey I’m responsible for this.” Louie Psihoyos’ passion is palpable, and it’s impossible to not be infected with it in his presence. He photographed for National Geographic for 17 years, sending him around the world dozens of times. During his tenure there, he produced a number of cover stories about mass extinctions throughout the ages.
Leading up to the premiere, Psihoyos and his team engaged in an educational campaign to bring awareness by projecting images of critically endangered species onto public buildings including the Empire State Building, UN Headquarters and the Vatican. Featured in this campaign, is Toughie, a Rabbs fringe-limbed tree frog, who is sadly believed to be the last of his kind. Toughie actually lives at the Atlanta Botanical Garden in a special containment area called the “frogPOD.” By sharing pictures of Toughie and other endangered animals he hopes to lift the curtain and show people how dire the situation has become for many of the earth’s creatures. Combined with this educational effort is his #StartWith1Thing social media campaign. I love this approach because I’m often asked the very question which #StartWith1Thing is trying to answer – “The problem is so big, what can I possibly do?” Change starts with each one of us where we live, and big change happens with the accumulation of many small actions. Many people who grew up with the Captain Planet cartoons have told me that’s where they learned to take responsible actions to make our communities better like recycling, conserving energy and water, restoring endangered species habitats, and using less harmful chemicals. Instilling intentional mindfulness is key to becoming a steward of the environment, because it’s not enough to just be concerned, you have to do something. so many of our favorite fruits and vegetables come into season, like strawberries, apricots, artichokes, rhubarb and garden peas. From there, the snacking options are endless. So instead of relying on unhealthy snacks like processed chips, take advantage of what nature gives us. Rather than learning the rules and restrictions of the latest fad diet or obsessing over the most recent miraculous “superfood,” choose moderation and common sense. What you make in your kitchen won’t always save you time, but it will take you one step closer to living a healthier lifestyle. After all, there are no shortcuts when it comes to cleaning up your diet – trust me, I think I’ve tried them all.
Healthy snacks only take a few extra minutes to prepare, but the benefits will leave a lasting impression on your lifestyle.
Turn chickpeas into a pop-able, healthy, crunchy snack by roasting them. To make them, preheat your oven to 450º F. Pour a quarter cup of olive oil on a rimmed baking sheet, and place in the oven for about three minutes or until hot. Then, combine two cans of rinsed and dried chickpeas with a teaspoon cayenne pepper, a teaspoon of paprika, half a tablespoon of ground cumin, and a teaspoon of coarse sea salt. Spread the chickpeas onto the hot baking sheet and bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until crisp. Transfer the chickpeas from the oil with slotted spoon and allow them to drain on paper towels.

elly Jane Quinn and Michael Jude Magnotta were united in marriage April 25, 2015, at St. Peter Chanel Catholic Church in Roswell. The traditional Catholic ceremony was officiated by Deacon Scott Sparks, with 200 guests in attendance. The bride walked down the aisle in a stunning ivory ball gown and veil with silver and gold antique embroidery by Eve of Milady. A glamorous reception followed at the home of the bride’s parents, Anthony and Gillian Quinn. “It was a sophisticated, elegant affair, almost Gatsby-like in décor,” said Kelly, singing the praises of Tony Brewer and Janet Dockery of Tony Brewer and Company, who orchestrated the big day. “It was best summed up by one of our guests who said, ‘Hollywood has come to Atlanta.’” Menu highlights from the formal seated dinner, by Soiree Catering & Events, included filet of beef tenderloin, North Georgia trout and fresh Maine lobster salad. The five-tiered French vanilla cake, regally designed by Frosted Pumpkin, took center stage beneath a white-columned canopy. The band Emerald Empire provided entertainment for guests, who also enjoyed a dessert table and late-night mini burgers and fries. 70

With the help of Paul and Donna Grady of Dewitt Smith Video productions, Kelly’s parents turned the traditional father-of-the-bride speech into an unforgettable video montage that played on several large-screen TVs. “There were family pictures, a few embarrassing stories and a signature rap by my mom. Everyone laughed and cried,” Kelly said. “It really captured their love and it’s a keepsake that we will treasure.” Kelly earned her BBA from the University of Mississippi. She is a Senior Registered Associate at Morgan Stanley. Michael is the son of James and Barbara Magnotta. A graduate of Virginia Tech, where he received a BBA, he is a managing director at AmericasMart. The couple met 12 years ago in Las Vegas, where they were dealt a most lucky hand. “We ran into some mutual friends from Atlanta who introduced us,” Kelly said. “When Michael first saw me, he said to his buddies, ‘I’m going to marry that girl.’” Michael’s good pal Bert Weiss, radio host of “The Bert Show,” was one of the witnesses of that magical meeting. The Monday following their wedding, he congratulated them with a special segment titled “Is Love At First Sight a Real Thing.” The newlyweds enjoyed a honeymoon to Parrot Cay, Turks and Caicos. A
n unprecedented $1.8 million was raised at Shepherd Center’s Legendary Party, held at Atlanta’s lavish event venue Flourish. Truly the “Party of This Century,” the annual ball was reminiscent of the famed 1966 Black-and-White Ball, hosted by Truman Capote at New York’s Plaza Hotel. Guests were greeted in the chandelier-lit courtyard with musicians playing Broadway melodies on a quartet of Baby Grand pianos, while statuesque showgirls dazzled in glittering gowns. Following cocktails in the reception hall, dinner was served in the breathtaking surrounds of the ballroom, with tables dramatically draped in black velvet and stunning arrangements of lush red roses. The four-course menu by executive chef Liz Cipro evoked 1960s classic dishes, from shrimp cocktail to filet mignon to Baked Alaska. The Seeit Choir opened the program with a moving rendition of The Lord’s Prayer, and the iconic Peter Duchin Orchestra entertained with popular hits from the past and present, keeping the crowd on their toes well past the stroke of midnight. Marking the Shepherd Center’s 40th anniversary as a nationally-acclaimed treatment center, the unforgettable evening was orchestrated by cochairs Cindy and Bill Fowler, their daughter Julie and her husband Bo Heiner, and Tony Conway of Legendary Events. Over $1.1 million was raised at the 32nd Annual United Negro College Fund Mayor’s Masked Ball, held at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis. The glitzy holiday gala featured dinner and dancing, entertainment by R & B sensation Johnny Gill, and a parade of stars and dignitaries, with 1,500 guests in attendance. “Southern Hospitality” was the theme of the 2015 Crystal Ball, describing the Arthritis Foundation’s kind and comforting support of children and adults with arthritis in the southern service area. Meals On Wheels Atlanta raised more than $610,000 at A Meal to Remember at The St. Regis Atlanta. The black-tie benefit featured a gourmet meal by French chefs flown in for the occasion, as well as fabulous live and silent auctions. Legendary Events created the dramatic room design. Co-chaired by Michelle Crosland, Marsha Middleton and Louise Sams, the gala honored Cox Enterprises and its president/CEO John Dyer for their ongoing support in ending senior hunger. From Hank Aaron’s 600th homerun bat and Georgia Tech’s Ramblin’ Wreck to a 1915 Coca-Cola bottle mold and a plaster cast of Willie B’s handprints, the Atlanta History Center’s new exhibit, “Atlanta in 50 Objects,” features a diverse assemblage of prized pieces that define the city. On view through July 10, the collection was culled from suggestions by Atlanta residents, who sited everything from the railroad and the Civil War to Martin Luther King Jr. and the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games. Also telling the tale of an ever-evolving city: a CDC microscope, Atlanta Constitution editor Ralph McGill’s Presidential Medal of Freedom, and Priscilla the Pink Pig Christmas ride from Rich’s downtown department store. ews flash from travel industry trendtrackers: families currently make up one of the fastest growing segments of cruising. And considering what’s afloat in the way of coming attractions – from a new Disney Star Wars adventure to Norwegian’s first nursery for tiny tots, from Carnival’s new Family Harbor Cabins to Holland America’s first purposebuilt staterooms for family groups – it’s scarcely a stretch to say that cruise-shopping parents never had it so good. What’s more, vacation planners who think an uberluxury ship or easygoing river vessel must surely be less than eager to roll out the gangplank for Mom, Dad, and the kids should think again. When it comes to an abundance of action-packed
activities for all ages, Karen Quinn-Panzer, CruiseOne franchise owner, names Disney, Norwegian, and Royal Caribbean as top contenders. “Disney’s newest venture is a Star Wars area they are creating within Disney Dream’s Oceaneer Club for kids three to twelve,” she points out. “Kids will virtually pilot the Millennium Falcon. Disney will also add a high-tech interactive space based on the Disney Infinity video game.” Along with Norwegian’s first-ever nursery for ages six months to three years, Quinn-Panzer notes, “older kids aboard Norwegian Escape, the line’s newest ship, can enjoy the biggest ropes course at sea, walk the plank, and splash in four theme park-quality water slides.” Then there’s Royal Caribbean’s new Anthem of the Seas. indoor activity space at sea, complete with bumper cars, a roller-skating rink, a basketball court, table tennis, and the line’s first circus school!” Holland America, taking note of the 25,000 children and their families currently boarding the company’s 15 ships each year, will unveil the line’s first-ever purpose-built family accommodations when Koningsdam debuts this year. The 32 new staterooms will house five people and show off such parent-pleasing amenities as two bathrooms. As for the aforementioned Family Harbor Cabins, they debut on Carnival Vista, also set to launch this year. Situated within a dedicated zone, the staterooms are designed to accommodate five people and offer a pair of bathrooms. Grown-ups and children will have separate sleeping quarters, and small fry will be treated to their own toiletries, robes and slippers. Nearby, the Family Harbor Lounge will serve as a secluded hangout for the whole gang with big-screen TV, board games, and snacks. Prefer the luxury picture? Consider German-born Hapag-Lloyd’s elegant Europa 2. Surprisingly, for such a highend, sophisticated product, children are welcomed from age two, with child care that includes both activities on board and excursions for youngsters and teens. Newly marketed to North American travelers, the ship sports seven suites with connecting doors specifically designed for families. Plus a popular service available on days at sea: for parents who yearn to sleep in, kiddies from age two are collected straight from the suite and trundled off to breakfast. In addition, shore tours are planned for all to enjoy together – or parents may opt for an adults-only land experience while their offspring are happily entertained on board. While virtually all sizeable, familybeckoning ships have attractive facilities and activities that appeal to various age groups from young children to teens, smaller vessels are also in the game. Vacationers who would jump at the chance to ever so subtly advance their kids’ education (shhh!) by introducing them to historical treasures and culture-

rich opportunities should check out AmaWaterways. The river cruise line is partnering this year with Adventures by Disney, a first-ever offering of familyfocused journeys along European rivers. Cruisers will sail aboard the new AmaViola, custom-built with a dozen staterooms that can sleep up to three; six sets of adjoining cabins with connecting doors that can hold up to five; and four suites with convertible sofabeds for up to four. AmaViola’s newsy layout will be similarly featured aboard sister AmaStella, both vessels to be unveiled this year. “Many parents and grandparents love that they can have adult time with their own activities while the kids have fun with others their own age,” QuinnPanzer sums up. “Then everyone can enjoy family time at meals and take in entertainment together.” Making memories that will last a lifetime.

Basque-ing in the Glory Cooks & Soldiers Shines
When this cozy new restaurant opened in late 2014, I remember thinking, “Cooks & Soldiers has some big shoes to fill.” How could it not, since it focuses on Basque Country’s cuisine, the same region in Southern Spain that grew culinary greats like Ferran Adrià and Juan Mari Arzak? In three separate visits, it’s clear that the newest restaurant from Castellucci Hospitality Group can hold its own. The wine list is glorious and, as you would expect, heavily weighted toward those of Spanish origin. It’s a wonderful, choose-your-own-adventure way to experience unfamiliar varietals (Bobal? Mencia? Godello? You’ll find them all represented here), under the skilled guidance of the service staff. The cocktails,

likewise, kept me intrigued. I, a perennial hater of gin, fell in love with the gin and tonic, concocted with housemade red pepper tonic. The natural sweetness of the red pepper cut was a bright, fresh twist on a classic (and, lucky for me, mellowed the juniper-laden flavor of the gin).

he lion’s share of the menu here is sharable plates, much like sister restaurant, The Iberian Pig. Pintxos Traditionales consist of toppings served atop fire-grilled bread. Hongos y Setas shines with impossibly smoky coal roasted mushrooms, goat cheese crème fraîche and decadent black truffle. For me, a close second is Pato Ahumando of smoked duck rillette, Blue de Basque cheese and bourbon-soaked cherries. At first glance, it seems to be a study in opposites. The kitchen employs traditional ingredients – Jamón Ibérico, Manchego, Spanish octopus and Chistorra sausage – and techniques. Yet, like so many stalwarts of modern Basque cuisine, the menu is peppered with fresh, experimental twists that keep interest high. For instance, the “tartare” is completely vegan, but it looks like a traditional presentation of steak. Ruby-hued tomatoes are pressed of their liquid, so they’re meaty and translucent, like stained glass. Then they’re layered on a crisp piece of toast and topped with what looks like a raw egg yolk. Instead, it’s a sublime combination of tangy yuzu and sweet carrot, with a yolk-like texture, thanks to the magic of molecular manipulation. In every dish, there was unmistakable attention to balance – the form never overtakes the function (or in this case, the taste). 118

The name Cooks & Soldiers is inspired by the annual Tamborrada festival of San Sebastián. At midnight on January 20th the mayor raises the city flag in the Konstituzio Plaza, and for 24 hours the city is awash with the sound of drums as adults, dressed as cooks and soldiers, march in different companies.

The hits just keep coming with Chef Landon Thompson’s varied menu. The Trout Navarre is cooked on the plancha (a flat top grill), with umami-laden black garlic, Iberico ham, Swiss chard, hazelnut romesco and crispy potatoes. The smokiness from the grill makes a big impact in the Pulpo: grilled octopus, guanciale, roasted new potatoes, fennel and squid ink. Perhaps less than politically correct, seared foie gras is served atop a savory black pepper sponge cake and accented with the sweet rhubarb and 25-yearold sherry vinegar. Cheekily named “Bikini” is a blend of stateside influences and Spanish ones: it’s a grilled cheese of white bread, American cheese, Iberico ham and sensual black truffles. An old favorite gets an upgrade in the form of “Chistorra in a Blanket” – sausage is glazed in sweet cider, wrapped in a toothsome croissant and served with maplemustard allioli for dipping. Meat lovers will rejoice at the Chuletón, a 1 kg. bone-in ribeye served with a rich Tempranillio bordelaise. Desserts are, likewise, a twist on the expected. Gelato, delicately spiced with pink peppercorns, pairs with creamed corn, caramel popcorn and corn crème anglaise. “Fruity Pebbles” is a playful grown-up version of a childhood favorite: cereal milk croquetas, citrus berry reduction and toasted marshmallows is a display of Pastry Chef Ashley Auer’s imagination. Even among the heavyweights of Basque cuisine, Cooks & Soldiers is a star in the making.
