Sheriff Nick Weldon reported the seizure of a lare amount of synthetic marijuana and arrest of wanted felon, Sterling Morgan.

DEKALB COUNTY, Ala. — On Tuesday, at approximately 3 pm, a DeKalb County Narcotics Agent observed a subject with existing felony warrants driving near the DeKalb/ Etowah County line.

When the agent

attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the suspect initiated a high-speed pursuit. The suspect led the agent on an approximately 15-minute chase that reached speeds over 100 mph. The suspect eventually wrecked on County Road 397, near the Aroney Community. The subject then led the officer on a foot pursuit covering

approximately a mile before being apprehended. The subject was also found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia. The suspect, Sterling Morgan (27 of Boaz) was charged with Attempt to Elude (x2), Driving While Revoked, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Failure to Stop, Reckless Endangerment, and Resisting Arrest. Morgan is

residence in Powell. The DeKalb County Narcotics Agents performed a check on the address at approximately 3 pm on Tuesday.

After arriving on the scene, Agents observed a subject toss an object underneath the porch. After

SCOTTSBORO, Ala.-- The Scottsboro Wildcats and the North Jackson Chiefs have faced each other in the Battle of the Valley, thirty-four times.

Scottsboro defeated North Jackson 16-12 for the third straight time.

The scales were in Scottsboro’s favor with 144 rushing yards compared to North Jackson’s 65 yards.

Scottsboro had 12 first downs to North Jackson’s four.

North Jackson put the first points on the board with a 96-yard kickoff return by Brady Cunningham.

Scottsboro answered back on a 8-yard touchdown by Gavin McCrary. The extra point attempt was good, giving the

Wildcats the 7-6 advantage. The Wildcats scored a safety to go up 9-7 late in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, North Jackson regained the lead, when Macklin Guess returned the WIldcat fumble, 55-yards for the touchdown. The Chiefs went into intermission with the 12-9 advantage.

The Scottsboro Wildcats took the lead, late in the fourth quarter on a 6-yard scamper into the endzone by Freshman Jake Jones. Jones was the relief quarterback for injured Gavin McCrary.

Scottsboro intercepted the ball on North Jackson's next possession. The Wildcats ran the clock out to claim the 12-9 victory in the Battle of the Valley.

DANGERS OF SELF MEDICATING

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other health agencies have advised against the unauthorized use of the drug ivermectin to treat or prevent COVID-19 in humans.

The Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) has sent a health alert message to healthcare providers in the state requesting reporting and cautioning them about the many side effects and serious harm caused when people take this medication for unapproved use.

Ivermectin is not an anti-viral drug and is approved for humans only at specific doses for specific conditions.

An FDA consumer alert explained that ivermectin is often used in the U.S. to treat or prevent parasites in animals.

The agency has received multiple reports of patients who have required medical support and have been hospitalized after

taking high doses of ivermectin which can be highly toxic in humans. Side effects occur, and drug interactions are common.

Two forms of ivermectin are available for human use, tablets to treat parasitic worms and a topical to treat head lice and skin conditions such as rosacea. The FDA has advised against human use of ivermectin produced for animals such as cows and horses as the doses are much higher and could contain ingredients intended only for animals and are thus harmful to humans.

Ivermectin is not without side effects, even at a single dose.

With the doses being given or found in livestock products, the risk of overdosing increases as does the severity of side effects and drug interactions.

Noted interactions occur with common medications which

include but are not limited to allergy medicines, antibiotics, anticonvulsants, antidepressants, benzodiazepines, some antihypertensive medications, blood thinners and many others.

Common side effects for ivermectin include itching and hives, dizziness, headache, nausea, diarrhea and muscle pain. More serious adverse reactions associated with toxicity and possible ivermectin poisoning documented in clinical literature include loss of consciousness, drowsiness, tremor, seizure, hypotension (low blood pressure), vomiting and coma.

Ivermectin has not been given emergency use authorization (EUA) by the FDA to prevent or treat COVID-19.

There are drugs available, including monoclonal antibodies, which are FDA-EUAauthorized for COVID-19 post-

exposure prevention and treatment. The newly named Pfizer COMIRNATY (COVID-19 vaccine, mRNA) now has full FDA approval, and the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines are FDA-EUA authorized in the U.S. Nationally and within Alabama the number of calls being received by poison control centers concerning ivermectin is increasing. In Alabama, as of August 23, 2021, the number of calls from persons taking ivermectin had doubled from the prior year. The Alabama Poison Information Center is tracking calls related to ivermectin side effects, toxicity or poisoning.

Anyone who has taken ivermectin and has signs and symptoms consistent with side effects, adverse reactions or toxicity/poisoning is advised to call the Alabama Poison Information Center at 1-800-222-1222.

INSIDE THE STATEHOUSE

By Steve Flowers Allow me to again open my political notebook for more summer political happenings in the Heart of Dixie.

As Labor Day approaches it looks as though the state constitutional officeholders, all Republicans, are going to escape serious or even any opposition.

Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth, Attorney General Steve Marshall and Agriculture Commissioner Rick Pate are running unopposed. However, all three are running aggressive campaigns or, as the old saying goes, are running scared.

It looks as though State Treasurer John McMillan will not run for reelection and may opt to be head of the new State Cannabis Commission. Waiting in the wing to run for treasurer is former State Treasurer Young Boozer. He will be a prohibitive favorite.

He did an excellent job

as Treasurer and remains very well thought of in Montgomery circles.

The Secretary of State and Auditors jobs are open with no incumbents able to run. Surprisingly, state representative Wes Allen is the only one running for Secretary of State. He dodged a bullet when Birmingham businesswoman, Laura Johnston Clark, opted to not run.

The State Auditor’s race has attracted several candidates. A recent entry is Mobilian Rusty Glover. He is a popular former state representative and state senator who ran statewide for lieutenant governor last time. He will be the favorite. I have never seen anyone who has ever met and visited with Rusty one-on-one who does not like him.

The big money in next year’s election will be on the state legislative races. All 105 State House seats and all 35 State Senate

races will be on the ballot. All 140 seats will have new lines.

They may all be similar, but all will have to deviate to some degree.

They will be drawing these new lines in a special reapportionment legislative session in late October or early November. The final census numbers just arrived within the last few days. This redistricting session is vitally important to all legislative incumbents.

It is about political self-preservation.

Redistricting also impacts the impending race for Speaker of the House, which will be determined shortly after the November 2022 General Election during the January 2023 organizational session.

Current House Speaker Mac McCutchen announced during the summer that he was not running for reelection.

This immediately set in motion a jockeying for position to be the next

Speaker. The two candidates that are emerging are Steve Clouse (R-Ozark) and Nathaniel Ledbetter (R-Dekalb County).

The race will be decided within the Republican House caucus. The House currently has a super majority with 75% of the body being Republican. This GOP dominance will continue or may even be enhanced after reapportionment.

Steve Clouse is a 27-year veteran of the House. He is the powerful Chairman of the House Ways and Means General Fund Committee. Nathaniel Ledbetter is a popular, folksy, keen, second-term representative, who is the House Majority Leader.

Both candidates start with a hard-core base of votes from legislators from their neck of the woods.

Ledbetter has a rock-solid base from the northeastern corner of the State and Sand Mountain.

Clouse has the steadfast support from southeast Alabama and the Wiregrass.

The race will probably be determined by the more populous delegation of legislators from the metropolitan areas of Jefferson/Shelby and Mobile/Baldwin.

Ledbetter has the backing of retiring Speaker McCutcheon of Huntsville and probably has an advantage in the Madison/Limestone delegation. However, Ledbetter’s ace-in-thehole may be that as Majority Leader, he is helping raise campaign money not only for incumbents, but more importantly the 20 to 25 new members who are being elected next May. If it comes down to a straight, all north Alabama versus south Alabama race, that gives Ledbetter a leg up because there are more people and legislators from north Alabama because that is where the population is as the

current census numbers reveal.

However, if a geographic war develops, look for the Montgomery River Region Republican legislators to side with south Alabama and Clouse.

Again, the Jefferson/Shelby and Mobile/Baldwin delegations may very well be where the race is decided. The Jefferson/Shelby legislators from the upscale urbane districts will favor Clouse’s experience in a private vote. This same advantage will accrue to Clouse in the silk-stocking Mobile/ Baldwin districts.

Veteran Mobile legislator Victor Gaston, who is also Speaker Pro Tem of the House, is running for reelection probably to help elect Clouse as Speaker. They are very close and dedicated friends.

Victor is very respected and may very well bring some Mobile legislators with him.

The portion of the 5k course that runs through the cave is an out and back 0.6mi that is wide enough for 2 way traffic. Runners will pick up a glow stick at the turnaround point and the decorative lighting will be on at all

times. The average temperatures for race day are a low of 54F, high of 79F. Meanwhile, inside the cave, the year-round temperature is a cool 58F. This will truly be a race like no other.

LIONS CAGE THE PANTHERS Section earns Southern Torch Team of the Week

COLLINSVILLE, Ala.-- The Section Lions defeated the Collinsville Panthers 34-6 to start the 2021 football season.

Section jumped on board early with a 9-yard touchdown by J. R. Walker, with 7:21 remaining in the first quarter. The Lions went for two but the pass failed.

With 6:41 remaining

in the second quarter, Drake McCutchen charged down the field 24 yards, leading the way for Jacob Cooper to score the extra two points. Going into the half, the Lions had the 14-0 advantage over the Panthers.

McCutchen stampeded down the field for 50 yards to score his second touchdown of the night for the Lions.

McCutchen passed the ball to Cooper for the extra two points, making the score 22-0

23-yard run by Conner Sronvi. The two-point conversion failed, making the final score Section 34, Collinsville 6.

Section did not have a punt and forced Collinsville to punt five times.

“I thought we played physical.

We’ve got good players and a good team but we gotta get in shape and we gotta get better” stated Section Head Coach Chris Hammon.

IDER, Ala.-- In a Thursday season opener, the Ider Hornets shutout the Woodville Panthers, 53-0.

Early in the first

quarter, Hunter Robinson intercepted the ball for a Hornet touchdown. The point after attempt was good, giving the Ider Hornets the early 7-0 lead.

Robinson scored with 1:14 remaining in the first. The extra point attempt by Ben Smith

was good, giving the Hornets the 14-0 advantage.

With 7:31 remaining in the first half, Robinson returned the punt for another Hornet touchdown. The extra point attempt failed, giving Ider the 20-0 .

GERALDINE, Ala.-- In a preseason Jamboree, the Piedmont Bulldogs defeated the Geraldine Bulldogs, 26-7.

The Piedmont Bulldogs could not make any headway with their first possession and were forced to punt. After a back-and-forth battle between the teams, Piedmont put their first points on the board first with a quarterback sneak. The extra point was good to give the Piedmont Bulldogs the

7-0 advantage with 5:43 remaining in the first quarter.

It was an intense battle between both teams during the entire second and third quarter with neither team adding points to the scoreboard.

Piedmont scored on a 1-yard scamper into the endzone with 11:12 remaining in the fourth quarter. The extra point attempt failed, making the score 13-0. Kobe Hall barreled down the field with a 65-yard touchdown run to put Geraldine on the board. The PAT by Carlos Mann was good, bringing the

score to 13-7 with 11:01 remaining in the fourth.

With 10:35 remaining in play, Dontavius Jordan got loose on a 60 yard run for the Piedmont touchdown.

The point-after attempt was good, advancing Piedmont, 20-7 over Geraldine. Jordan scored again for Piedmont, on a 45-yard touchdown run, with 6:45 remaining in the game, making the final score for the Jamboree 26-7.

Geraldine will travel to take on the Westminster Christian Wildcats, Friday night to start regular season play.

Dukes made a 32-yard pass connection to Austin Mulligan with 1:25 remaining in the second quarter.

Dukes plowed into the endzone for the 2-point conversion.

Fyffe snuck in another touchdown to go into the half, with the 24-0 advantage.

Aubrey Baker scored on a 1-yard scamper with 10:24 remaining in the fourth. Isabella put their only points on the board with less than two minutes remaining in the game, on a 3-yard scurry into the endzone.

“I thought it was a typical first game.

It was hot, humid and everyone got tired.

We tried to play hard for the most part but we have to get much better everywhere” stated Fyffe Head Coach Paul Benefield. “I thought WIll Stephens played hard and did his job most of the time.

Brodie Hicks ran hard and played decent on defense.

Jake Wooden played pretty good.”

Fyffe will have a bye week this week before hosting the Collinsville Panthers on September 3.

MAPLESVILLE, Ala.-- The defending Class 3A State Champions, Fyffe Red Devils scorched the Isabella Wildcats on Friday night, 30-6.

The Red Devils picked up a safety early in the first quarter. With 1:09 remaining in the opening quarter, Brodie Hicks stampeded down the field for the 15-yard touchdown. Kyle Dukes, brought in the 2-point conversion to take the 10-0 lead.

MILLBROOK, Ala.--Cornerstone Christian Academy faced New Life Christian Academy on the road, for their 2021 Season Opener. The Eagles shutout New Life, 40-0.

In the first quarter, Lucas Hale connected with Jack McGullion on a 43-yard pass for the touchdown, to take the 6-0 lead. Lucas Hale scored on a 3-yard stampede into the endzone, to give the

Eagles the 12-0 advantage at the end of one.

In the second quarter, McGullion scored on a 54-yard pass connection from Hale. Hale then connected with Eli Carter for the two point conversion to take the 20-0 lead. McGullion brought it in from 47-yards out for the score. Hale brought in the two-point conversion to go into the half with a score of 28-0.

The Eagles dominated the second half as well. McGullion scored on a 35-yard

rushing touchdown, giving the Eagles the 34-0 advantage. Late in the third quarter, the Eagles put their final points on the board after an interception by Sam Johnson for the score.

Jack McGullion led the Cornerstone Eagles with 82 yards on 2 carries and two touchdowns. Lucas Hale went 3-for- 3 and 107 yards in passing.

The Cornerstone Eagles will be on the road again this week, taking on Success in Montgomery for a Thursday night game.

VALLEY HEAD, Ala.--The Ragland Purple Devils defeated the Valley Head Tigers, 40-18 on Friday night.

Ragland attacked first, scoring on a 41-yard pass connection. The point after attempt failed but gave the Purple Devils the 6-0 advantage.

Valley Head answered back with 10:00 remaining in the second quarter on a 71-yard touchdown run

Valley Head came out of the half scoring on a 23-yard touchdown run by Ian Bain, to close the score to 26-12, with

7:26 remaining in the third quarter. After a blocked punt by Brandon Vazquex, Bain scored on a 63-yard touchdown to bring the score to 26-18.

With 3:44 remaining in the third, Ragland scored on a 20-yard pass connection to take the 34-18 lead.

Ragland scored two additional touchdowns in the fourth quarter, making the final of the game, 40-18.

The Valley Head Tigers will host the Section Lions on Friday night.

SYLVANIA, Ala.-- The Saks Wildcats defeated the Sylvania Rams, 42-32 in their season opener on Friday night.

The Rams received the ball to start the game. The Wildcats made an interception and scored on a pick 6. The two-point conversion failed but gave the Wildcats the early 6-0 lead with 10:57 remaining in the first quarter. On their next possession, the Wildcats connected on a 42-yard pass to set up the 2-yard scamper into the endzone. The Wildcats successfully went for two to take the 14-0 lead with 5:32 remaining in the first quarter. The Rams made a long 65-yard run before fumbling the ball on Saks' 2-yard line. Saks recovered the ball and threw a pass for 88 yards for the touchdown on third down and 8. The extra point attempt was not good, making the score 20-0. With 1:30

remaining in the first, Sylvania put their first points on the board with a 60-yard stampede down the field by Zac Anderson.

The next play was right up the middle for the touchdown. The Wildcats successfully went for 2 up the middle. At halftime, the Wildcats had the 28-12 advantage.

FORT PAYNE, Ala.--The Fort Payne Wildcats were defeated by the Athens Golden Eagles 41-40, in a nailbiter on Friday night.

The Wildcats picked up a safety when the Golden Eagles snapped the ball, and it went over the punter's head into the endzone, giving the Wildcats the 2-0 lead with 10:24 remaining in the first quarter. Fort Payne’s Kaden Dubose dashed down the field with a 36-yard touchdown making the score 9-0 with 9:13 left in the first quarter. Devin Wells intercepted the ball and returned it to make the score 16-0 with 7:30 remaining in the first.

In the second quarter, Athens scored with 10:23 remaining to make the score 16-7.

With 7:59 left in the second quarter, Darrell

Prater ran up the middle with an 18-yard touchdown to make the score 22-7. Athens scored their second touchdown of the night with 7:12 remaining in the first half making the score 23-14.

Dubose stampeded into the endzone from 3-yards out for another touchdown for the Wildcats giving them the 30-14 advantage over the Golden Eagles with 1:33 left in the second quarter.

Athens answered back with an 80- yard touchdown making the score 30-20. Alex McPherson nailed a 32-yard field goal to make the score 33-20 at the half.

In the third quarter with 5:58 remaining Sawyer Burt made a 14-yard touchdown, making the score 40-20. Athens Scored on a 14-yard pass to cut the score to 40-27with 2:17 left in the third quarter.

making the score 40-34. Athens hit another 23- yard touchdown pass to take the 41-40 lead with 7:10 left in the game. McPherson attempted a 53-yard field goal but failed, giving the Athens Golden Eagle’s the 41-40 win over the Fort Payne Wildcats.

“I give Athens a lot of credit for not giving up and coming back to win the game”, stated Head Football Coach Chris Elmore. “I am disappointed in myself for not having our players in the proper condition to finish the game. We had complete control when we were ahead 40-20 halfway through the third quarter. We just have to learn to finish the game and not lose a lead like that in the second half. We will learn and improve as we move forward.”

Fort Payne will host Gadsden City Friday night at 7 pm.
