Cornerstone Christian Academy Varsity Girls claimed the ACAA Div 2A State Championship last Saturday, defeating

Tabernacle Christian 68-43.

On Friday, Pisgah Varsity Girls won their fifth straight Class 2A State Championship. The Lady Eagles defeated St. Luke’s Episcopal 74-54.

The Eagles, coached

by Carey Ellison, won their fifth straight state championship with a 74-54 victory over St. Luke’s in Friday’s Class 2A girls’ championship game at the BJCC Legacy Arena. Pisgah won 3A titles in 2018, 2019, and 2020 before moving to 2A and capturing titles in 2021 and now 2022.

The state championship was the school’s 10th overall and the eighth won under Ellison’s tutelage, which ties him for most girls’ state championships coached with Hazel Green’s Tim Miller and Lauderdale County’s Brant Llewellyn. Miller will be vying for his ninth Saturday when Hazel Green takes on Oxford in the Class 6A state finals and his team will also be chasing its fifth state crown in a row.

The Eagles’ 10 state titles are second only to Lauderdale County,

which has won 13. Its last championship came in Class 3A in 2016.

Lauderdale County was also the first girls’ program to win five championships in a row – winning them all in Class 3A from 2012-2016.

“To win that many in a row is just insane,” said senior Molly Heard, who won the tournament MVP award for the third consecutive year – another rare feat.

Heard filled the stat sheet for the Eagles (33-3) with 25 points, 16 rebounds, four blocked shots, three steals, and three assists. She also passed 2019 Miss Basketball Annie Hughes to become Pisgah’s all-time leading scorer with her 24th point in Friday’s game.

Heard finished her career with 2,696 points.

Hughes, now at Auburn University, had 2,694 in her prep career at Pisgah. Heard is heading to Lipscomb University.

Molly Holcomb added 23 points, including four 3-pointers, and Lila Kate Wheeler added 13 points.

Chloe Gilmore led St. Luke’s (21-9) with 19

points, sinking three of the Wildcats’ four treys.

Iamunique Bowie added 17 points and 15 rebounds, and Arbany Holder scored 14 points.

by Garreth Trawick, has advanced to the state semifinals in Birmingham for four straight seasons but fell one game shy of winning its first title. The Wildcats also finished runner-up to Spring Garden in the 2020 1A championship game.

Pisgah has played in the state semifinals for six straight seasons, finishing as 3A runner-up to Locust Fork in 2017 before starting its five-year championship reign.

“I’m so proud of my seniors,” Ellison said. “My seniors stepped up to the challenge. They led us all year.”

Melinda Gilbert is a lifelong resident of Jackson County. She is the daughter of Charles “Joe” and Margaret Gilbert of Hollywood and has one brother Bobby and Sister in Law Melinda Dean Gilbert, a niece and nephew Erin and Andrew. Her grandparents were John and Ruby Odom of Hollywood and the late Juanita Haswell and Winfred Gilbert.

Melinda is a 1986 graduate of Scottsboro High School and received her BS in Collaborative Education from Alabama A&M and her MS in Collaborative Education from Jacksonville State University.

Ms. Gilbert served on the commission from 2016 -2020

representing District 3 making her the only candidate running with experience. Since she has moved back home to Hollywood and now resides in District 2.

Gilbert states “it takes several months to get your feet on the ground as a commissioner, you have to learn about the different departments, budgets and where funds come from and are allowed to be used, I even went out with different departments to gain a better understanding of what the work entails, also, gained knowledge what has been tried and failed and tried and succeeded in helping our county.” She admits the first time was a learning process and may have made

some mistakes. But, feels like this experience, mistakes and all, will allow her to be a better commissioner if given the opportunity to serve again and she will be able to hit the ground running right away.

Gilbert wants to remind the citizens everyone in Jackson County votes for this position, whether you live in a city or township or out in the rural county area, and yes, this office is on the ballot in Scottsboro. Gilbert says “she is simply asking for another opportunity to serve her county and give back, because this county and its’ people have been good to her throughout the years.”

As Patterson and his teammates celebrated with the Blue Map (trophy) after Friday’s 77-61 victory over Mars Hill Bible in the Class 2A boys’ state basketball championship game, Patterson grabbed the trophy from his teammates. Nobody stopped him.

He lifted the Blue Map and kissed it as his teammates looked on with equally amazement and joy.

“With every championship we’ve won this year, I’ve done it,” he said. “I just like it give a good smooch.”

Patterson, named the Class 2A state tournament MVP, definitely deserved his solo moment with Blue Map after tallying 36 points, 12 rebounds and two steals at the BJCC Legacy Arena as the AHSAA’s 100th

State Basketball Championships completed crowning state champions its second classification with five classes still to go.

Section (28-9) won its first state boys’ basketball championship since 2003 and third overall.

Patterson and Section coach Derek Wynn are sons of players from the school’s first state championship in the historic 1969 season – the first to combine all schools into one AHSAA. The Alabama Interscholastic Athletic Association (AIAA), which historically served the black high schools in Alabama, merged with the AHSAA in 1968-69 and all teams competed for the same state high school championships.

“Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve been dreaming about this moment,” senior Alex Guinn said. The dream almost became a nightmare in the opening minutes with Mars Hill jumped out to an early 8-1 lead before Wynn called a 30-second timeout.

“I just told them to breath,” he said. “We

needed to just hoop.”

Added Patterson, “I felt like we knew we could hoop. I was just the one who got hot.

My teammates, they got me the ball. They got me open.”

Guinn added 15 points and Dominik Blair scored 10 points.

For Mars Hill (15-16), coached by Jim South, junior forward Connor Pigg led the way with 20 points and seven rebounds. Hugh Hargett had 14 points, three assists and three steals.

Section shook off its early scoring drought to lead 16-14 at the end of the first quarter and 39-29 at halftime. The lead grew to 24 in the fourth quarter.

“These guys found a way, and they never quit,” Wynn said.

Scottsboro—At its February 28 meeting, the Jackson County Commission approved the expenditure of $375,000 in American Rescue Plan Act fiscal recovery funds to upgrade water service in the Wannville area.

The project will extend existing water mains along County Roads 46, 116, and 246 and will provide county water services to approximately 30 residential customers currently reliant on wells.

In the coming days, the Jackson County Water Authority will begin work to install water mains, fire hydrants, and water meters in the designated areas. The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Because the wells

no longer provide safe, clean drinking water and pose a health hazard for affected residents, the project is a high priority for the Commission. “There are few things more important than clean drinking water,” said Jackson County Commission Chair Bill Nance. “We are glad to be able to improve the lives of our citizens by providing reliable and safe drinking water to the Wannville area.

Our American Rescue Plan Act funding has given us the opportunity to make this investment into our community’s infrastructure.”

Enacted in March of 2021, the American Rescue Plan Act provides counties with fiscal recovery funds to address the continued impact of the

COVID-19 pandemic on local government and economy, public health and safety, and quality of life issues.

Counties have until December 31, 2024 to obligate these funds.

The Jackson County Commission is a participant in the Investing in Alabama Counties program established by the Association of County Commissions of Alabama. The IAC program provides customized assistance, expertise, guidance, and implementation assistance to ensure the county’s federally restricted funds allocated under the American Rescue Plan Act are utilized within the requirements provided by the U.S. Department of Treasury.

The RPD, along with Rainsville Fire and Rescue responded to the residence to assess the man’s condition.

After arrival on the scene, Anthony David Nute was charged with three misdemeanors: public intoxication, resisting arrest, and third-degree assault.

Officers’ tased Nute prior to handcuffing him. Nute was then transported to the DeKalb County Corrections Center, which is operated by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Surveillance tapes show three employees of the Correction Center, Wrett Tyson, Adam Jackson, and Jon Brown, bringing Nute into a search room.

While in the search room, Nute can be seen being hit, taken to the ground, and kicked. The video also shows Nute being tased by stun guns.

According to a lawsuit filed, Nute suffered head trauma, abrasions, and bruises to his face, head, neck, shoulders, chest, pelvic area, back, arms, legs, and hands and feet. The lawsuit stated that Nute’s cheekbone, eye socket, nose, nasal canal, and ribs were fractured and that Nute will need reconstructive surgery.

Wrett Tyson, one of the three former jailers charged with the assault will go on trial in May. The third former jailer, Jonathan Brown, was granted youthful offender status. Brown was eligible to be tried as a youthful offender due to him being 20 years old at the time of the offense. The youthful offender status means records of his case are sealed and the maximum penalty that he will face is three years.

Nute sued Jackson, Brown, and Tyson and reached a confidential

settlement with the County’s insurance company.

The following statement was made by the Dekalb County Sheriff’s Office regarding the incident and firing of the jailers who were involved in the assault: “This incident in question occurred in March 2020. The employees involved were immediately terminated and the case was referred to an outside agency for investigation, as is standard practice for all criminal cases of this nature. We have done everything in our power to assure justice is appropriately served.

This behavior goes against our policies and the moral code of conduct we encourage at the DCSO. Like the public, we anxiously await justice in this crime.”

Sheriff Nick Welden added: “This kind of action goes against everything we stand for, and we will not stand for it.

That’s why immediate and appropriate action was taken. Our office only stands for what’s right. We deal with the wrong when it comes along, whether it’s an employee or anyone else. There is no justification in breaking the law that we are sworn to uphold regardless of who it is.”

Mayor Lingerfelt announced that the Spring Cleanup for the City of Rainsville will begin on May 2 -28. Dumpsters will be available behind the City Shop building, Monday -Friday from 7 am to 6 pm., and on Saturday, from 10 am to 6 pm.

The Council approved the purchase of a tractor from Boykin Tractor Co., Inc in the

Friday - March 10, 2022 - 3 amount of $33, 125 to be paid out of the Sewer Fund. The current tractor owned by the City is a 1991 model.

The Council also approved an 18’x 66’ expansion off the front of the current Freedom Fest Stage.

This will allow equipment to be in the dry. Jimmy Traylor Construction submitted the low bid of $45,750 and work will be completed before the Rainsville Freedom Fest 2022.

The Council congratulated Cornerstone Christian Academy and the Plainview Basketball Teams for their accomplishments in basketball.

Cornerstone and the Plainview Varsity Boys won State Championships. The Plainview Varsity Girls Basketball Team made it to the Final Four of the Alabama High School Athletic Association State Basketball Championships (AHSAA).

70 Grams of Meth Seized

FORT PAYNE, Ala. — Eight were transported to the DeKalb County Detention Center after the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office conducted a raid in the Blake Community yesterday (March 3, 2022).

Led by the DeKalb County Narcotics Unit,

Deputies, Investigators, Interdiction Agents, and the Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit arrived at the residence on County Road 515 at approximately 1 pm to execute a search warrant. During the execution of the search, approximately 70 grams of

methamphetamine were located.

Four firearms and an undisclosed amount of currency were also seized. Several subjects located at the residence or located after fleeing the area were also found to have existing warrants.

The two incumbents are Jeremy Oden and Chip Beeker.

Oden has two unknown Republican opponents. Beeker has two opponents in the GOP Primary.

One has some name identification, who has run before. Beeker and Oden will probably win reelection.

There are only three hotly contested and interesting secondary statewide races. That is because these three posts are open without an incumbent on the scene.

Popular Supreme Court Justice Mike Bolin, the former Probate Judge of Jefferson County, is term limited by an antiquated law that prohibits a judge from running for the court after age 70. There are two qualified candidates seeking to follow Judge Bolin.

Birmingham Defense Attorney Greg Cook is facing Anniston Circuit Judge Debra Jones.

Cook appears to be the favorite to win. It is apparent that the business community in the state is backing Cook. He has also been endorsed by the Alabama Farmers Federation. The latest campaign finance reports reveal Cook has $552,000 to spend compared to Jones $15,000.

The State Auditors position is open. Jim Ziegler has served his eight-year stint. This will be an interesting three-man race for this benign position.

Former Mobile State Representative and State Senator Rusty Glover is facing Muscle Shoals State Representative Andrew Sorrell and Jefferson County Pastor Stan Cooke. All three are getting out and working the state.

The race to succeed John Merrill as Secretary of State

will be a good race.

Merrill is term limited after eight years. State Auditor Jim Ziegler is wanting to move next door in the Capitol and become Secretary of State. Because of his name identification advantage, Ziegler will be favored to win the race. However, he will get a significant challenge from State Representative Wes Allen.

Young Wes Allen has been running for over a year and has a good many significant endorsements including Alfa. He has an impressive resume having served a decade as Probate Judge of Pike County and four years as a State Representative.

He also has two home bases. He has lived and served in office in Troy in Southeast Alabama and was born and raised in Tuscaloosa where his father Gerald Allen has been a long time State Senator.

Ed Packard, who has run the Elections Division of the Secretary of State’s office for decades, is also running. He is very well qualified.

The aforementioned current Secretary of State, John Merrill, is not seeking any elective office in 2022, even though he is still relatively young. I have said this before and it holds true today, Merrill is currently the best and most prolific retail politician in the state and one of the best I have seen in Alabama. He has a real grassroots organization in Alabama. He is literally everywhere. Even though he is not on the ballot running this year, he is out working every candidate mentioned in this column. You have not heard the last of John Merrill.

Inside The Statehouse

Incumbency is a potent, powerful, inherent advantage in politics. That fact is playing out to the nines in this year’s Alabama secondary constitutional and down ballot races.

Several of the constitutional office incumbents do not have Republican or Democratic opposition.

Of course, having a Democratic opponent is the same as not having an opponent in a statewide race in Alabama. A Democrat cannot win in a statewide contest in the Heart of Dixie.

Lt. Governor Will Ainsworth will be elected to a second four-year term without opposition. He will be waiting in the wings to follow Kay Ivey as Governor.

Agriculture Commissioner Rick Pate will be reelected without opposition. He has done a good job in this important state post.

State Treasurer Young Boozer is running unopposed for another four-year term. He does an excellent job and is uniquely qualified for the Treasurer’s job.

State Supreme Court Justice Kelli Wise is running for reelection unopposed.

Kelli is popular and is a good jurist. She is home free for six more years on the state’s high tribunal.

Attorney General Steve Marshall has token opposition in his run for reelection. One Republican and one Democrat qualified against Marshall.

However, he will coast to reelection.

There are two seats up for election on the Alabama Public Service Commission.

There are three seats on this regulatory panel. The President of the PSC runs in a presidential year.

Cory Michael Coots (31 of Rainsville) was charged with Possession with Intent to Distribute - Methamphetamine and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Andrew Lee Gonzalez (29 of Rainsville), Bryan Lee Burt (31 of Rainsville), Andrea Nicole Liles (27 of Rainsville), and Bradley Shane White (48 of Rainsville) were all charged with Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance and Unlawful Possession of

Drug Paraphernalia.

Catherine Chyanne Wells (37 of Rainsville) and Austin Taylor Wagner (24 of Rainsville) were both arrested on existing warrants with our agency.

A Trooper with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency also assisted in the operation.

The Bears (31-6) placed three players in double-digit scoring to overcome another stellar game by Winfield’s Ja’borri McGhee. McGhee led all scorers with 38 points and added 11 rebounds after scoring 36 in the Pirates’ semifinal win earlier this week. He finished 15-of-26 from the field – and 14-of-18 on 2-point attempts.

McGhee sank 7-of-10 free throws and had 11 rebounds. Logan Feltman, Winfield’s 6-foot-10 senior center,

added 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Pirates, coached by Zac Wakefield.

Luke Smith added 18 points and four assists for Plainview, and Dylan Haymon scored 16 points. Five different players made at least one 3-pointer.

Coker implied the Bears played one of their best games of the season.

“We did a great job in the half-court by limiting them to one shot,” he said. “Then, offensively, we did a great job of taking what the defense gave us. These guys are super unselfish” stated Coker.
