KANSAS CITY, Mo.--On Sunday, Fort Payne’s hometown hero, Evan McPherson of the Cincinnati Bengals, kicked a 31-yard field goal, in overtime, to win 27-24, over the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Bengals erased an 18-point deficit, and took the 24-21 lead, on a 52-yard kick by McPherson.

The Chiefs tied the game, with a 44-yard kick of their own, as time expired in regulation play.

In overtime, the Chiefs were intercepted on the third play, allowing the Bengals to take over.

McPherson kicked the 31-yard field goal, winning the American Football Conference (AFC) Championship and

advancing the Bengals to the Super Bowl.

McPherson hit field goals of 32, 31, 52, and 31 yards during the game.

McPherson remains perfect through the AFC playoffs and has made 12 consecutive field goal attempts, setting the record of the most by a rookie kicker in league history. McPherson’s 12 field goals are also the most in Bengals franchise history. He is already the first player in NFL history with four field goals made in multiple games in a single postseason.

The Bengals will face the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LVI. This is the first time in 33 years that the Bengals have made it to the big show.

The kickoff is set for Sunday, February 13 at 5:30 from SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

Tuberville has put together an excellent staff. He did a good day’s work when he secured Stephen Boyd as his Chief of Staff.

Tuberville and his staff are doing an excellent job with constituent service, which is an integral part of a senator’s job when you want to be an effective senator for your state.

Tuberville’s staff is especially interested in helping veterans in Alabama. He has a full-time staff member, who is assigned to helping Alabama veterans get their

deserved benefits for their service to our country. You could tell Tuberville was driven to making sure that military veterans and current service men and women were taken care of when he was running. His father was a career military man and Tuberville revered him. Coach Tuberville has not sought the spotlight and tried to become a Fox News darling and be a right wing ideologue.

He has taken on a workhorse mentality and has voted consistently conservative and been a team player within the GOP Senate caucus. Tuberville realizes that he will never be a Richard Shelby because he got there later in life after his career as a college football coach. He has learned that seniority counts. Arriving in the U. S. Senate at age

Seniority is king in Washington. Tuberville also understands the importance that defense spending and agriculture are to Alabama. He is applying himself to protecting these two vital concerns as any senator from Alabama should strive to accomplish.

It is all about seniority in the U.S. Senate. It will be at least 15 years before anybody we elect to this senate seat has any real power to bring home the bacon. Katie Britt is 40 and Mo Brooks is 68. You can do the math as to which one has the potential to be effective for Alabama and build seniority and power. Katie Britt not only has the youthfulness to gain seniority, but she also possesses the ability, acumen, and more importantly she wants to be an effective

senator for Alabama and protect our military bases and jobs.

Mo Brooks has shown over his 40year political career and more recently his 10-year congressional tenure that he does not want to be effective for Alabama.

He is more interested in bomb throwing than doing anything for his district or Alabama.

Brooks could not be effective, even if he wanted to. He will be 69 and the Republican leadership would dismiss him as a rightwing gadfly and an old one at that.

The wildcard in the Senate race is one Mike Durant. He came out of the blue three months ago and has bombarded the airwaves with a constant saturation of television ads. He has run a total media campaign with no oneon-one campaigning.

Few people have ever

met him. He is like a stealth candidate, who only appears on your television as a POW war hero. Durant, who hails from New Hampshire, is primarily self-funding his campaign. However, he is also being financed by a PAC headed by a wealthy donor Harriman, who wants to elect five independent nonpartisan senators in the mold of Mitt Romney of Utah and Susan Collins of Maine, which would put Durant in a small group of liberal Democrats and Republicans.

Durant may also be torpedoed by a family situation that has come to light recently.

The U.S. Senate race is fluid at this time with most people undecided on their choice. It will be interesting to watch.

RAINSVILLE, Ala.-- The colder weather this past weekend made perfect conditions for snow. The only problem is, Rainsville did not get any snow.

Well, some parts did….

A few lucky kids, on Hodges Street, woke up to about 4 inches of snow on Saturday morning.

Butler’s children were so disappointed that they missed the most recent snow that DeKalb County was blanketed with. The Butler’s were on vacation when parts of DeKalb received up to three inches of the magical snow.

The Butler’s took to the internet to purchase a snow-making machine. Conditions and temperatures had to be perfect to make the snow the

children had begged for. Saturday morning, the stars aligned for the Butler children. Mom and Dad awoke the gang to a Winter Wonderland early Saturday morning.

The children and neighbors alike enjoyed the one yard in the neighborhood that was covered in snow.

This is a prime example of a parent’s love for their children!

FP to apply for Federal Funds

FORT PAYNE, Ala.--The Fort Payne City Council held their regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday.

The Council authorized James Payton, of Ladd Environmental, to submit a pre-application for an SRF loan that would be applied to the southern leg of the sewer line replacement. This part of the project will be close to $10 million to complete. Federal funds, related to covid policies, could provide money for certain projects. The pre-application would

determine if Fort Payne would be awarded any of the federal funds.

In other business, Fort Payne City Attorney Rocky Watson spoke to the Council regarding the grant application for a sewer line to be installed for the Jacksonville Canyon Center Field School. Grant money would pay for the expansion of the line.

Fort Payne would be the owner of the line and take the responsibility for maintenance of the line. A letter must be written to accompany a grant application.

This sewer line can be tapped on by residents, who provide a pump and pay the

tap fee.

The Council approved the following Resolutions: • 2022-04, approving City Attorney Watson’s letter to JSU regarding the sewer line to the JSU Canyon Center Field School.

• 2022-05, authorizing signatories to lease papers for new sanitation trucks.

• 2022-06, informing ADEM of actions taken by the City to meet the permit requirements for the Wastewater Treatment Plant. This is a yearly required resolution.

In new business the Council: Authorized the Memorandum of

Understanding between the City of the Fort Payne School Board for the use of the Williams Avenue School building by the Police Department.

Council President Watson discussed the upcoming Council trip to Washington D.C. for the National League of Cities meeting.

The next meeting of the Fort Payne Council will be held on February 15. A public meeting will be held to accept comments on the City entering into a Memorandum of Understanding with Marathon Realty Group to bring a Food City Grocery Store to Fort Payne.
