FP Paves Way for Food City

FORT PAYNE, Ala.- (FULL VIDEO ON SOUTHERN TORCH FACEBOOK) At Tuesday’s meeting of the Fort Payne City Council, a Public Hearing was held to receive comments on the proposed Memorandum of Understanding between the
City of Fort Payne and Food City. In the Memorandum, Food City requested $3.1 million to locate to Fort Payne. Food City presented a statement showing their income, their charitable donations to NASCAR and others but stated that a new store would require the investment by the City of Fort Payne.
Several business owners spoke, to a large crowd, in support of two local businesses that will be affected by Food City moving to Fort Payne. The numerous business owners were against the City paying taxpayers money to lure this new business. Bruce’s Foodland has operated in Fort Payne for decades and is a locally owned grocery store.
Bobby Ledbetter/Twin City Used Cars will be displaced as Food City will be located on the property where they currently operate their business. After the Public Hearing, the Fort Payne Council voted in a 3-2 vote to bring Food City to Fort Payne. Council President Walter Watson, Councilmember Lynn Locklear Brewer, and Councilmember Phillip

Sheriff’s Office Hard at Work
FORT PAYNE, ALA- The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office stayed busy during January. Sheriff Nick Welden reports the following: 1/1/22, DeKalb County Deputies noticed a subject who appeared intoxicated in Kilpatrick. Deputies performed sobriety tests, methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia were found on the subject. Don William McDougal (50 of Crossville) was charged with Public Intoxication, Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance, and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Deputies conducted a traffic stop in the Kilpatrick area. The driver was found to be in possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. Nazario Lopez (31 of Albertville) was charged with Unlawful Possession
of Controlled Substance, Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, DUI Combined Influence, and Unlawful Possession of Prohibited Beverage. Fyffe Police Department attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver refused to stop, after stopping, it was determined the driver was under the influence. The driver was also found to be in possession of Kratom. Paul Stewart Ely (31 of Rainsville) was charged with DUI (Alcohol), Attempt to Elude, Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance, and Resisting Arrest. 2/3/22-DeKalb County Deputies were on I59 in Fort Payne, assisting in getting the interstate open due to snow and ice. A vehicle was pulled onto the shoulder of the road, Deputies pulled
over to see if the occupant needed assistance. When the window was rolled down, the smell of marijuana was detected. After a search was conducted, cocaine and marijuana were located within the vehicle. Robert Hill III (58 of Trussville) was charged with Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance, Unlawful Possession of Marijuana 2nd, and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. 2/4/22- Deputies responded to a call of trespassing on County Road 221 near Collinsville. When Deputies arrived, they found Megan Elizabeth Stringer (31 of Collinsville) at the residence. Stringer was taken into custody and transported to the DeKalb County Detention Center where they found her to be in possession of a THC concentrate. Stringer was charged with
Criminal Trespass 3rd, Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance, Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and one warrant for Failure to Appear. DeKalb County Narcotics Agents conducted a traffic stop on County Road 38 near Powell. During the stop, a half-ounce of methamphetamine was found. Jeremy Morris (43 of Fyffe) was charged with Possession with Intent and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Shawn Michael Thomas (29 of Fyffe) was charged with Unlawful Distribution of Controlled Substances, Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and one warrant for Failure to Appear. Sonya Slaton Whitten (49 of Fyffe) was charged with Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance (x5), Tampering with Physical

Evidence, Possession with Intent to Distribute, Promote Prison Contraband 2nd, Unlawful Possession of Marijuana 2nd, and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Whitten has more charges when she arrived at the DeKalb County Detention Center, she was found to be in possession of methamphetamine, cocaine, suboxone, and several different controlled medications. 1/5/22, Deputies conducted a traffic stop on County Road 141 near Cartersville, finding the driver to be in possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. Scott Wayne Parsons (51 of Ider) was charged with Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
