Benefield Celebrates 300th Win

After a victory over rival Sylvania last Friday night, Benefield became just the fifth coach to win 300 games in the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA). Benefield has led Fyffe to three Class 2A state championships, a 17-1 playoff record, and a 60-1 record since 2016. Congratulations to Coach Benefield for this great honor and we look forward to 300 more wins soon!

During the work session, Chief School Financial Officer Anthony Cooper presented the 2020-21 DeKalb County Schools budget. RAINSVILLE, Ala. — The Rainsville City Council held their meeting on Thursday, September 10 due to the Labor Day holiday. The Council suspended the rules for immediate consideration to pass Ordinance 09-10-2020 that pertains to the regulations for alcohol sales. All council members, with the exception of Marshall Stiefel who was absent, agreed upon the regulations and passed Ordinance 09-10-2020. This Ordinance will permit alcohol sales within the City of Rainsville and sales on Sunday. During any 90-day period, the gross receipts from the serving of meals and food shall constitute at least fifty percent (50%) of the total gross receipts of the business.
Southern Torch will continue to update as alcohol sales draw nearer. The Council agreed upon the members appointed to the Alcohol License Review Committee. The members are as follows: Mayor Rodger Lingerfelt, City Clerk Kelly Frazier, Police Chief Kevin Smith, Fire Chief Williemac Wright, Skeeter Logan, Tina Hosch and Ryan
Tramel. In other business: • Passed Resolution 9-10-2020 which allows the surplus of (3) pieces of furniture from the Rainsville City Hall. • Purchased a wood filing cabinet from Thomas & Son in the amount of $179.00 • Purchased a computer for the Revenue Enforcement Office in the amount of $1,225.00
Cyrus Frost. Frost suddenly passed away last Tuesday. He previously worked in the Calhoun County school system where he was added to the Calhoun County Teacher Hall of Fame in 2006 and awarded Assistant Principal of the Year in 2015. “When he came to us from Calhoun County, he was known as a great educator, a great teacher, and a great leader. He certainly lived up to that in DeKalb County,� said Barnett. “My heart, my prayers, and my sympathies go out to [his family]. There’s a piece of them that’s lost...but he’ll live on their life and their heart forevermore.� At the request of the
superintendent, the Board approved the 2020-21 Federal Advisory Council and the EmployeeQuarantine/Remote Work procedures. The Board approved the following retirements/ resignations/ terminations: • Misty Brooks, itinerant special education teacher at Geraldine HS (retirement, 9/1/20) • Stanley McClendon, bus driver at Geraldine HS (retirement, 11/1/20) • Amy Banks, itinerant special education paraprofessional at Geraldine HS (resignation, 9/30/20) • Lila Brothers, CNP worker at Crossville MS (resignation, 10/31/20) The Board approved

• Bid out the culvert repair on Parker South • Authorized Boozer Construction for work on (2) headwalls on Country Club South in the amount of $7,500. • Authorized the repair work for dumpster/pad at Kandieland Day Care in the amount of $2,400 where garbage trucks had damaged when picking up trash • Hired Tyler Ledford
as a full-time employee with the Street department for maintenance/mowing at the rate of $12.99 per hour • Hired Jake McClung as a full-time employee with the Rainsville Fire Department at the rate of $12.29 per hour • Hired Sara Barnard as Sewer/Sanitation Clerk to replace Kennedi Traylor at $11.84 per hour • Accepted the resignation of Tiffany Edwards at the Rainsville Police Department. • Purchased a debris vacuum for $7,000. • Purchased mulch for the City Park and the Field of Dreams Park, not to exceed $4,000 in cost. The next meeting of the Rainsville City Council will be September 21 with a work session beginning at 4:15 and the regular session beginning at 5 p.m.
