Geraldine Holds Hearing for Buckles
By Marla Jones Managing Editor marla@southerntorch.com
GERALDINE, Ala. — On Tuesday, a crowd gathered at the Geraldine Town Hall in support of Assistant Police Chief Jeff Buckles, who is currently on paid leave due to comments made on Facebook. The Geraldine Town Council held a special called meeting to have a due process hearing. Buckles chose to have his side of the story told in a private meeting with Town Attorney Nikki Scott and his own personal third-party, impartial lawyer. Buckles himself was not able to make a comment regarding the situation. Buckles, who has served as Assistant Chief of the Geraldine Police Department for two years, took to Facebook immediately following President Donald Trump’s
Jeff Buckles of the Geraldine Police Department is under investigation after comments made online regarding U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. (Marla Jones | Southern Torch)
State of the Union earlier this month. “Pelosi just ripped up his speech. Road Side bomb on her way home and any other Dumbocrats, Buckles stated in his post. The post was later deleted with Buckles apologizing, “I have definitely offended some people with my
remarks. It just rips my heart out that our great country is so divided. Following the incident, Geraldine Chief of Police Heath Albright stated, “The Geraldine Police Department has been made aware of a Facebook post made by one of our officers. The post has since been
deleted. The incident is being investigated. Due to the current investigation, no further comment can be made. We will make further statements at the conclusion of the investigation. Geraldine Mayor Chuck Ables stated Buckles was on paid leave, pending investigation, and no further comments could be made. According to a statement made by the Town of Geraldine, “Officer Jeff Buckles had a due process hearing before an impartial decision-maker on Tuesday, February 25. A report will be sent to the Mayor and Council at a later date. The decision on whether or not to take disciplinary action against Buckles could be made as soon as the next council meeting on Tuesday, March 3. Southern Torch will continue to update as this story develops.
Don't forget to vote on Tuesday, March 3! Polling stations will open at 7AM and close at 7PM. To find your polling place, registration information or a sample ballot, please visit the Alabama Secretary of State's website at alabamavotes.gov!

2020 Big Bass Splash
The largest bass tournament in the South in coming to Goose Pond colony. (Submitted Photo)
By B.A. Little, Reporter • beverlyannette@southerntorch.com SCOTTSBORO, Ala. – Over the past sixteen years, the Mountain Lakes Chamber of Commerce has brought Sealy Outdoors and the McDonald’s Big Bass Splash to Lake Guntersville in Scottsboro. 98-3 Wild Country (WKEA) will continue to be the exclusive radio station for anglers, spectators, and the listening audience. The tournament continues to grow every year. Bob Sealy, head of the organization said, “We are excited about coming back to Scottsboro, Alabama at this great lake. It is now the largest amateur tournament of its kind in the South. We know this lake (Guntersville) has a great bass reputation and perhaps one year the tournament here will be as large as our Texas Big Bass Splash.â€? The number of anglers that registered and fished the McDonald’s Big Bass Splash has grown every year it has been on Lake Guntersville. In 2020, the total of amateur anglers is expected to grow again as they try their skill at the $280,750 in cash and prizes to be awarded during the 16th Annual McDonald’s Big Bass Splash. The Big Bass Splash will be held March 27, 28, & 29 at Goosepond in Scottsboro. There will be fifteen places paid in cash each hour of each tournament day beginning with the 7-8 AM hour and continuing through the 1-2 PM hour for the fifteen single heaviest basses weighed in. Hourly updates will be broadcasted live on WKEA 98.3 FM for all three days. The first place of each hour will take home $1,500! Contestant(s) weighing in the first 3.00/4.00/5.00 exact weight bass each day of the tournament will win $1,000. All contestants are eligible to win a Triton 179 TRX Bass Boat, powered by Mercury, and equipped with Minn Kota and Lowrance in the famous “Elimination Drawingâ€?. Additionally, overall awards include a cash payout for 2nd through 5th place winners. Sarah Stahl, Chamber Director of Tourism added “After all that’s said and done, the 2019 McDonald’s Big Bass Splash on Lake Guntersville had an economic impact of over $3.3 Million spent in our local businesses. Anglers came from 32 states to fish in the tournament and for every ($1.00) dollar that Jackson County Tourism invested in this tournament, $3.63 was returned in the form of sales tax, lodging tax and fuel tax to our city and county.â€? Don’t forget about the “Little Anglers Tournamentâ€? that goes on at the same time. Registered kids ages 5-12 can catch any kind of fish and be eligible to win prizes. Bring the kids to the tournament and have a blast! For more information or to register, go to www.sealyoutdoors.com, call 888.698.2591 or the Chamber at 256-259-5500. Efforts Underway to Transfer TVA under Jackson County Ownership By Dylan Smith JB Managing Editor dylan@southerntorch.com JACKSON COUNTY, Ala. — Commission Chairman Tim Guffey met with Congressman Mo Brooks in Washington on Monday to discuss plans to transfer land currently under TVA ownership to local stakeholders. These plans come as county officials ramp up their efforts to launch an aggressive industry recruitment campaign. Freeing up TVA owned land would allow the county’s Economic Development Authority to market the undeveloped real estate to prospective industry. “I’m working with Congressman Mo Brooks on a project to get TVA’s Board to release all property in Jackson County
that’s not in the flood plains at a fair market value for Economic development, said Guffey. Chairman Guffey praised the Congressman’s efforts on the issue. “Congressman Brooks has really stepped up to help me put this plan together. Rep. Brooks has formerly expressed support for TVA transitioning idle land
assets to Jackson County for economic development purposes. TVA, one of the region’s most powerful corporate agencies of the federal government, currently manages nearly 293,000 acres of federally owned land across the Tennessee Valley. This is a developing story. Jackson Blaze will continue in-depth coverage of new developments.

Inside The Statehouse By Steve Flowers Political Columnist MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Folks, our primaries are next week! On the Democratic side, the Presidential Preference Primary will be the big show and will be interesting to watch. On the right, the Republican Primary for the U.S. Senate seat will be the marquee event. In addition to the Senate Race, you have two open Republican Congressional Seats in the First and Second Districts. You also have some important statewide Supreme Court and Appellate Court races on the ballot. Incumbent Supreme Court Justice Greg Shaw and Shelby County State Senator Cam Ward, are both running to be the Republican nominee for the Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, place number one. Shaw is one of the most introverted, dignified people that ever ran for statewide office. He takes his role as a monk-like nontalking judge to heart. He has not and will not campaign. He thinks it is beneath the jurist to talk to people, much less campaign or shake hands. On the other hand, Senator Cam Ward is the ultimate people person and campaigner. Ward has worked the state from one end to the other, campaigning in every nook and cranny and county. He has outworked Shaw 20 to 1. However, ultimately in today’s statewide politics, it all boils down to money. Ninety-five percent of the people who vote next Tuesday will not decide or think about who they are going to vote for until next week. Then after they vote and elect one of them, they will not be able to tell you who they voted for or for that matter who is on the Supreme Court. This one will be interesting and probably close. Whoever
•
" "
gets the most votes Tuesday will be sworn in for a six-year term in January. Winning the GOP nomination for a judgeship in Alabama is tantamount to election in the Heart of Dixie. Two Jefferson/Shelby metro candidates are vying for a seat on the Court of Civil Appeals. State Representative Matt Fridy and Phillip Bahakel are vying for place number 2 on the Civil Appeals Court. The presiding Judge of the Court of Criminal Appeals, Mary Windom, should waltz to re-election. However, Criminal Appeals Judge Beth Kellum, who has done an excellent job, could have a tougher race with two opponents. PSC President Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh has an also-ran liberal candidate in her race. The winners of the March 3 GOP Primary or runoff on March 31 will win the 1st and 2nd congressional districts and go to Washington for two years. The fist district Mobile/Baldwin race is the best and most up in the air. It is a three-man race between former State Senator Bill Hightower, Mobile County Commissioner Jerry Carl, and Mobile State Representative Chris Pringle. It will be interesting to see which two make the March 31 runoff. Dothan businessman Jeff Coleman is the front runner to win the open 2nd Congressional district seat. The question is can he win without a runoff. It may be difficult with seven people in the race. He will
ultimately win. As earlier stated the GOP contest for the U.S. Senate is the marquee event on the scene next week. Jeff Sessions is the favorite to win back his seat. However, it will not be a cakewalk. It is doubtful he can win without a runoff. It is a spirited and close race between Coach Tommy Tuberville and Congressman Bradley Byrne to get into the runoff with Sessions. Former Chief Justice Roy Moore has done very little campaigning and will probably get less than 10% of the vote. All indications point to former Vice President Joe Biden winning our Democratic Presidential Primary. Over 75% of the votes cast in our Alabama Democratic Primary will be by African American voters, and Biden has received overwhelming endorsements from almost all of the African American hierarchy and leadership groups in the State. In addition, the two leading African American Democratic Leaders, Congresswoman Terri Sewell and Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin, have endorsed Biden. However, Joe Reed’s powerful Alabama Democratic Conference has endorsed former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg. It will be interesting to see how Bloomberg fares in Alabama next Tuesday. He has spent a lot of money. You will see an initiative on the ballot that will ask you if you want to make the State School Board appointed rather than elected. Gov. Life is better with you in it. Schedule a potentially lifesaving colonoscopy now. If you are over 45, the American Cancer Society recommends regular colorectal screenings. As a leading cause of cancer death for both men and women in the U.S., a screening can often find colorectal cancer early when it might be easier to treat. Don’t wait, make an appointment today. A colonoscopy could mean more time with the people you love. To make an appointment, call toll-free 866-394-3018.
Why have a colonoscopy?* • Regular screenings can help prevent colorectal cancer. • Polyps can be found and removed before they turn into cancer. • When found at an early stage, the 5-year survival rate is about 90%.
