By Staff Reports FORT PAYNE, Ala. — According to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office several were arrested over the last week after searches were conducted to find stolen property. Two in Sylvania were arrested after a search revealed obscene material and evidence of child sexual abuse and bestiality.

A man was also sent to the hospital on Highway 11 near Valley Head after a domestic dispute.

On Sunday, October 29th the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by a homeowner on Highway 117 to find two subjects in his house. The homeowner held the subjects, Robert Brewster (34 of Valley Head) and James Himber (39 of Henagar) until Ider Police, Henagar Police and Deputies arrived. Once Deputies and Investigators arrived Brewster and Himber was arrested and charged with burglary 3rd

at this with more charges pending on both subjects.

During the investigation of this burglary, Investigators and Deputies went to Brewster’s residence on County Road 121 to recover possible stolen items.

While at that residence Brewster was also charged with Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance and Drug Paraphernalia.

Also arrest was Melissa Louise Harrison (35 of Valley Head) for Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance and Drug Paraphernalia.

By Staff Reports FORT PAYNE, Ala. — DeKalb Deputy Daniel Mathews passed away tragically early Tuesday morning (October 31, 2017) after an auto accident. A

memorial service was held at 3 pm on Thursday, November 2 at Wilson Funeral Home.

The family received friends from 12 pm to 3 pm, and a graveside service was held immediately after the memorial at Walker’s Chapel Cemetery.

On Tuesday, The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office released a statement on mourning the loss of one of their own: “Our hearts here at the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office are saddened this morning when we learned that one of our Deputies, Daniel Mathews was in a car accident that took his life.

Remembering Deputy Mathews

RAINSVILLE, Ala. — (Video and Employee actions on our website) As part of the work session, the DeKalb County Board of Education were updated on the ongoing network upgrades, which the board is currently undergoing to improve their device functionality.

Representatives of Howard Technology Solutions from Ellis, Mississippi, who has been conducting the upgrades, were present at the meeting to update the board. Nathan White and Shephen

Cochran addressed the board.

Board Chairman Jeff Williams introduced them by saying: “I hope all of you aware by this point, we are in the midst of a major network upgrade and in that transition phase; we think that’s going well. We have some guests with us today, that are going to give us an update of where we stand.”

“We’ve been very pleased with the process of how this has went,” said Superintendent Jason Barnett. “Back when I first took office, this was kind of laying on the desk, and we

On Sunday, October 29th Investigators and Deputies went to a residence on Hwy 75 in Ider to execute a search warrant for stolen property. During the search Dustin Franco (33 of Pisgah) was arrested for Marijuana 2nd, Drug Paraphernalia, Obstructing Government Operations, and Resisting Arrest. Also arrested was Bridget Lashae Mosher, 26 of Ider, and charged with Marijuana 2nd and Drug Paraphernalia with other charges still pending.

FORT PAYNE, Ala. — (Full Video on our Website) After approving minutes from the previous meetings, the Fort Payne Board of Education began their October meeting with a presentation from

an architect on the new facilities planned for the school system.

Robert Littleton of Goodwyn, Mills, and Cawood presented plans for a new gymnasium, tech building, and an additional dressing facility. These are just a few of the projects that the firm is working on for the board's capital

improvement plan.

Littleton overviewed the plan for the new competition size gymnasium first. The gym will have large, arena type seating, retracting bleachers, and allows for courts going in both directions. The gym will

“I knew this was a major, multi-million dollar project, and didn’t want any foul steps on following through with it. So we vetted out the process and the folks that were going to be doing it, and after we met with them we were very pleased with what we heard. And of course, as we got into the process with what we experienced, and how we went through the process. I couldn’t be happier with how it went,” said Barnett.

Nathan White, Account Manager for North Alabama first addressed the board: “We’ve been super thankful for all the school’s administration. We’ve worked with power companies, administrators.”

“It’s a daunting, Daunting process. I think right now we are at five schools completed.

Ultimately our goal is not to throw equipment at the problem, it’s to improve learning spaces and environments; cutting down on headaches for your teachers, while providing consistent and reliable network connectivity,” said White.

White then introduced Stephen Cochran, who has handled much of the project: “Just to rattle off the numbers: 160 switches, 70,000 feet of fiber, but beyond that, completely forklifting your network,” said Cochran. “Every device, at every school, that touches the internet, is getting new IP addresses; new stuff. There is not a device that’s left unturned as part of this project.”

Board Member Mark Richards then asked, “The schools that we’ve got complete, are there any big hang ups or, anything that stands out that we are still lacking on that?”

“We turned over Geraldine First, and there was some issues that we were not anticipating. We redesigned those, and we have not had those issues again,” said Cochran.

“What were some of the other schools (that are on the new network)?” asked Board member Matt Sharp.

“We’re done with the Crossville community, and we just turned over Ider,” Cochran responded.

Cochran also said they’ve held “Bring your own Device” for teachers to bring any device in they wanted on the network to be added. They hope to replicate this at the other schools as they are moved to the new network and encourages faculty and staff to take part to ensure smooth connectivity.

Cochran then introduced Stephen Skillman, who is from Blount County, Alabama and will be helping the board with the day-to-day operations of the network.

Cochran also stated that they are tentatively anticipating the upgrades to be complete by the end of the year.

If you turn on the television or read any newspaper, you will see the violent, criminal acts on churches across our country. To help ease the minds of churchgoers across the county, the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office attended several seminars to help instruct and equip church leaders in the many ways that they can help make their sanctuary a safer place for their congregation.

The Sheriff’s Office has implemented a Church Security Program to several different Churches in DeKalb County over the last year.

The Church Security Program is put on by Chief Deputy Michael Edmondson, Lieutenant Alfred Rigstad, and Investigator Jake Fowler.

The purpose of this

program is to assist local churches in setting up a security team for their church, show them what they need to do in case a crisis happens, teach the leadership different ways to secure the church, and observe and address what the church needs to adjust to help make their facilities more secure.

Chief Edmondson says, “As we attend our church we don’t think about bad things happening there, but in this day and time we are not guaranteed. So not only do we need to keep our communities safe but we need to keep our churches safe as well."

On October 30th Investigators, DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office and Sylvania police executed a search warrant on Spear Street in Sylvania. During the search Robert Bishop, 27

of Sylvania was arrested for 2 counts Dissemination of obscene matter, Possession of obscene matter, and Bestiality. This search also lead to the arrest of Ashley Hartline, 26 of Rainsville

for sodomy 1st, Dissemination obscene material, and Production of obscene material.

Also on October 30th DeKalb County Deputies responded to a domestic violence call on US Highway 11 North of Valley Head. Upon arrival on the scene deputies found a male subject, Scottie Lee White, 27 of Valley Head lying in the roadway. White was being attended by a citizen who stopped to help. Deputies also found a female, Kristy Nacole Hatfield, 34 of Valley Head standing in the yard of the residence on Highway 11. Both

also feature locker rooms for Men's Varsity, Women's Varsity, JV teams, and visiting teams.

According to Littleton, the new gym will seat 824 on each side in the shown configuration; seating over 1600 hundred total.

The architectural firm is currently working on creating, "differences in elevation," meaning the seating will be raised with the court sunken down, to give fans more of an arena

style view of the games.

The new Tech building will feature four open bays for students to learn electrical, HVAC, and other construction skills. The bays will open to the parking lot to allow for loading and unloading of material Opened up for the parking to allow vehicles and construction to be able to unload in that

the Fort Payne Housing Authority.

deeply saddened to have lost one of our deputies and it is hard for us because we are like family here at the Sheriff’s Office.

Ted Cruz (R-TX) last week, and since Cruz’s endorsement, Moore has been endorsed by U.S. Congressman Jeff Duncan (R-South Carolina), State Senator Bill Hightower (R-Mobile), Senator John

Newt Gingrich announced his endorsement of Judge Roy Moore for the U.S. Senate in Alabama’s December 12th special election.

“There’s nothing more important for advancing the President’s agenda than having another conservative voice in the U.S. Senate – which is why we need Judge Roy Moore in Washington,” Gingrich said. “Roy Moore is a West Point graduate, Vietnam Veteran and constitutional scholar who has been a fighter for our conservative values. He will help rebuild our military and stop the gross overreach of Federal power.”

This elected body of 105 members will meet to discuss issues related to seniors but in some cases, they may have positive impacts on the State in general.

Alabama’s Silver Haired Legislature has met now for 24-years.

They have had a significant impact on Alabama Public Policy.

The idea of a body to represent seniors has been around the nation since 1973. Most states now have a Silver Haired Legislature. The idea of a senior legislative institution was created to educate older Americans about issues of local, state, and national concern.

The purpose is to insure that all 105 legislative districts have a senior legislator to mirror and provide some liaison with our 105 regular state legislators, assist them, and keep them apprised of senior issues that affect

their constituents.

The Silver legislators serve as conduits between the state’s area agencies on aging, Senior Centers, nutritional centers and generally being the eyes and ears of seniors related to finances, education, recreation, health and wellness.

Unlike the regular legislature, the Silver Hairs body is unicameral and nonpartisan. They are from all parts of the state. The age requirement is that one must be over age 60.

They pass resolutions, not bills. Their nonpartisanship makes for a much more effective and harmonious legislative session than our regular legislature.

Many of these senior legislators have historically been an extremely experienced collection of retired state employees, educators, business people, judges, former legislators, mayors, and public servants. Many have been involved with governance at all levels.

Alabama is an aging state. By 2030 those age 60 and above will represent 27 percent of Alabama’s population. It is often overlooked, but this age shift is evolving.

Currently it is estimated that nearly 20 percent of Alabama’s population is over 60. The fastest growing segment of our state’s population is our folks 70-85. Projections are at the next census one of every five Alabamians will be over 65. Therefore, it is apropos that we have a senior legislature of over 60 year olds looking after their interests.

They were at the forefront and subsequently were the reason that an Elder Abuse Statue

was passed in the state.

They were the first to address the issue of texting and driving.

Legislation came out of that resolution. They have impacted the Medicaid budgeting problems and nursing home enhancements and regulations. They were the first to bring attention to the predatory payday lending business. They brought about public transportation for senior citizens who live in rural areas and small municipalities. They have sought assistance to better fund all Department of Senior Services.

Their current leadership is stellar. The Speaker of the House is Steve Griffin of Tuscaloosa. Winston Griggs of Headland is Speaker Pro Tem. George Boswell of Wetumpka is Secretary. Sandra Harris of Alexander City is treasurer. Other leaders who serve on the board and are legislative leaders are Mary Jo Martin of Demopolis, Dean McCormack of Tuscumbia, Warner Floyd of Montgomery, Homer Homan of Brundidge, Selena Daniel of Opelika, Carol Oden of Vinemont and Ann Holman of Dothan.

While much of the focus is on the younger generation, it will be those that have helped build the state who are quietly listening to the issues and helping plan the trajectory of state programs and politics who may actually have the loudest input at the ballot box and in helping shape the legislation that insures that Alabama remembers the needs of its seniors along with all of its citizens.

PELL CITY, Ala.— The Fort Payne Wildcats defeated the Pell City Panthers 19-17, on Friday night, giving them the much needed win to advance to the Class 6A playoffs.

Fort Payne’s defense came out strong, and forced a quick three-and-out for the Panthers. A bad snap for the Pell City Panthers gave the Fort Payne Wildcats a safety. The Wildcats secondary stood strong with Levee Hall and , Jordan Bain each having a interception.

With 1:06 left in the first quarter Matthew Shaddix scored giving the Wildcats a 9-0 lead.

Mcpherson kicked a field goal giving Fort Payne a 12-0 lead in the second quarter. With 3:10 remaining in the half Mathew Shaddix had a 34-yard touchdown run making the score 19-0.

Right before the half, Pell City scored to make it 19-7 going into the half..

With :39 remaining in the game the Pell City Panthers scored their final touchdown of the night.

The Wildcats recovered the onside kick,and took a knee.

Jay Tyler Ellis went 11-for-16 with 129 yards, Matthew Shaddix rushed 8 for 55-yards receiving 4 for 107-yards and 1 touchdown.

Will Crow had 1 sack, 1 tackle for a loss and one caused fumble, Levee Hall had 1 interception, 1 caused

fumble, 1 tackle for a loss and 1 pass breakup. Jordan Bain had 1 assist,1 interception, 1 tackle for a loss and 1 pass break up.

Connor Schrader had 1 assist, 1 tackle for a loss and 6 pass break ups.

“It was a great win to get us into the playoffs” said Fort Payne Head Coach Paul Ellis. “ The kids could had hung their heads after the loss to Albertville,but they practiced hard and played inspired football and got a well earned trip to the playoffs. I am so proud of our team.”

The Fort Payne Wildcats will travel to Anniston tonight, and next week they will travel to take on Homewood in the first round of the AHSAA playoffs.

The Sylvania Rams attacked early, scoring two touchdowns in the first quarter. The first being on a 1-yard dash into the endzone by Tyler Wilbanks.

The extra-point attempt for Christian Andrade, who was 8-for-8 on field goal attempts for the night, was good giving the Rams the early 7-0 lead. The second score of the first quarter, was by Kris Shavers on a 35-yard gallop into the endzone. The PAT was good, giving the Rams the 14-0 advantage.

marla@southerntorch.com IDER, Ala.—The Ider Hornets defeated the Westbrook Christian Warriors on Friday night, 28-0 to become the No.3 seed in Class 2A, Region 6 play.

The Hornets attacked the Warriors quickly, scoring on a 3-yard dash into the endzone, by Sam McKay with only a minute ticked off the clock. The extra-point attempt by Logan Townson, was good and the Hornets went up

7-0.

The Hornets added more points on the board, with 5:28 remaining in the first half, with a 25-yard gallop into the endzone, by Alex Brown. The PAT was good by Townson and the Hornets, ended the half with the 14-0 advantage over the Warriors.

Chase Townson picked off the Warrior pass and returned it 30-yards for the Hornet touchdown, to start the second half. The extra point by Townson, who went 4-for-4 for the night, was good and the Hornets went up 21-0.

In the fourth quarter, Jacob Higdon added the final Ider touchdown of the night, with a 2-yard dash into the endzone. The PAT was good. The clock ran out for the Warriors, with Ider having the 28-0 advantage, for the win.

Jacob Higson led the Ider Hornets with 128 yards on 15 attempts.

In the final game of regular season play, The Ider Hornets will face the Sylvania Rams on Thursday night. For the first round of Class 2A playoffs next week, the Ider Hornets will face the Lamar County Bulldogs.

Plainview will host Moody tonight in non-regional play. The Bears will host the Weaver Bearcats in the first round of the AHSAA state playoffs, next week.

Bisons Battle the Bulldogs Panthers Cage the Lions

marla@southerntorch.com HIGDON, Ala.—The Geraldine Bulldogs fell to the North Sand Mountain Bisons, 20-13 on Friday night.

The first quarter started off in snail speed.

The Bisons missed a 22-yard field goal. The Bulldogs finally scored, with 2:25 remaining in the first, on a 2-yard dash into the endzone by David White. The extra point attempt by Jose Garcia was good, giving the Bulldogs the 7-0 lead.

North Sand Mountain added points on the board, late in the first half, with a 65-yard touchdown pass completion. The extra-point attempt was not successful giving the Bulldogs the 7-6 advantage, going into the half.

WIth 5:30 remaining in the third, the Bisons scored on a 27-yard run. The two-point conversion failed but the Bisons took the 12-7 lead. Geraldine took the lead back, with a 3-yard touchdown score by Austin King. The extra-point attempt failed, giving the Bulldogs the 13-12 advantage over the Bisons.

The Bisons battled back, with the coveted No. 3 spot in playoff action on the line, with a 25-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion failed but gave the Bisons the 20-13 advantage, where it stayed for the remainder of the game.

Geraldine will host Crossville for the annual “Battle of Skirum Creek” tonight. They will face the Class 3A defending State Champions, Piedmont Bulldogs on the road, in the first round of AHSAA state playoffs, next week.

marla@southerntorch.com COLLINSVILLE, Ala.—The Collinsville Panthers defeated the Section Lions 35-14,in Class 2A region play, to end a four-game losing streak on Friday night.

With 7:27 remaining in the first quarter, Section scored on a 4-yard run. The extra point attempt was good and the Lions went up 7-0. With 5:59 remaining in the first, Collinsville answered back with a 1-yard dash into the endzone by Dalton Hughes.

Isiah Avila was good, tying the game 7-7. With 5:05 remaining in the first quarter, Kaleb Jones connected with Mason McKinney on a perfect 28-yard pass, to score. The kick was good and the Panthers went up 14-7 at the end of the first quarter.

To start the second quarter off right for Collinsville, Jones dashed in from 1-yard out to score.

The kick by Avila was good and the Panthers took the 21-7 lead. Section answered back with a 31-yard pass connection for the touchdown. The kick was good, narrowing the score to 21-14. With 3:32

remaining in the first half, Jones darted in from 1-yard out. The kick was good and Collinsville went into the half, with the 28-14 advantage over the Lions.

The last half of the game was a battle with neither team scoring in the third quarter. Collinsville added the final points, with a 4-yard scamper into the endzone by McKinney with 3:32 remaining in the game, giving the Panthers the 28-14 victory.

The Collinsville Panthers will finish their regular season, hosting the Valley Head Tigers on Thursday.

Devils dismantle the Dogs Lions Make the Playoffs

marla@southerntorch.com FYFFE, Ala.—The Fyffe Red Devils dismantled the Gaston Bulldogs, not allowing a first down and defeating them 56-0, in Class 2A regional play on Friday night.

The Red Devils attacked early with a 46-yard touchdown run by Silas Hicks. The extra point attempt by Brody Dalton was good, giving the Red Devils the 7-0 advantage.

With 6:47 remaining in the first quarter, Payton Anderson ran one in from 14-yards out. The PAT gave the Red Devils the 14-0 lead. With 4:17 left in the first quarter, Quarterback Seth Benefield made a 25-yard pass connection with Chase Adams, to go up 21-0. With 1:49 remaining in the first Brant Rowell charged in from 15-yards out to make the final touchdown of the first quarter, giving the Red Devils the 28-0 lead over the Bulldogs.

To start the second quarter, Payton Anderson galloped in for the 27-yard touchdown. Brant Rowell brought one in from 81-yards for yet another Red Devil touchdown, to make the score 42-0. With :52 remaining in the first half, Jake Stone stampeded for 20-yards down the field for the final touchdown of the first half. The Red Devils went into the half with an astonishing 49-0 advantage over the Gaston Bulldogs.

ALEXANDRIA, Ala.—The Alexandria Valley Cubs defeated the Crossville Lions 60-14 on Friday night. Despite the loss, the Crossville Lions clinched a spot in the Class 5A, Region 7 playoffs. The will travel to face the No. 1 ranked, Briarwood Lions, on Friday night.

Crossville scored their lone touchdown of the first half, when Blanton Jones

connected with a 14-yard bomb to Andrew Driskell.

The No. 3 seed in Class 5A, Region 7 attacked the Lions quickly and by the half, had the 53-6 advantage.

Late in the fourth quarter, Blanton Jones scored on a 22-yard, quarterback keeper. Jones led the Lions with 185 yards on 16 attempts and completed 11-of-20 passes for 101 yards.

“Obviously, it has been a rough month for us, with our three big games coming in consecutive order but we

were able to to take care of business early in the year” said Crossville Head Coach, Miles Holcomb. “It is a great feeling to be playing Week 11. Im super proud of our guys for handling the adversity we have gone through over the past month but we do not plan to be finished anytime soon.”
