JONES VOTES NO
By Marla Jones, Reporter FORT PAYNE, Ala. — Today’s home fires burn faster than ever. In a typical home fire, you may have as little as one to two minutes to escape safely from the time smoke alarm sounds. Knowing how to use that time wisely, takes planning and practice. The Fort Payne Fire Department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the official sponsor

By Zach Hester Reporter WASHINGTON, D.C. — After a year of fundraising, two local bands had the honor of performing in Washington D.C. over the weekend.
Around this time last year, the Geraldine and Sylvania bands surprised DeKalb County residents with the news that they had been invited to perform at the Lincoln Memorial. During the October 7 performance, the
bands jointly performed “The Star-Spangled Banner and a medley of patriotic songs. “We are so excited to have this once-in-a-life-

(DOUG JONES | US SENATE)
By Marla Jones, Reporter WASHINGTON, D.C. — After months of deliberation, Judge Brett Kavanaugh has been confirmed to the Supreme Court of the United States. Doug Jones, one of just two Democrats that represent Alabama at the national level, voted no on his confirmation. In late September, Jones said, “The Kavanaugh nomination process has been flawed from the beginning and incomplete at the end. Dr. Ford was credible and courageous and I am concerned about the message our vote will be sending to our sons and daughters, as well as victims of sexual assault. I will be voting no. Jones explained on the Senate floor what motivated him to vote against now-Justice Kavanaugh. “I want to make my position clear today. I think this kind of political campaign for a seat on the Supreme Court of the United States, a political campaign run by either political party, should be condemned as completely contrary to the independence of the judicial branch of our government, said Jones. He went on to say that the decision to vote no was not an easy choice to make. Kavanaugh was confirmed by the Senate on Saturday 50-48 with West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin bucking party lines to vote in favor of confirmation. Justice Kavanaugh took his place on the bench on Tuesday.

We want to thank everyone for their support and assistance in making this possible, said Geraldine band director Lauren Lingerfelt Roszell. “This was a performance that these students will never forget. During the past year, both bands sold yard signs and held other fundraisers to raise money towards funding the trip. “This has been a fantastic experience for our students, said Sylvania band director Patrick Roszell. “I’d like to thank our faculty and administrators for going above and beyond in supporting these students and making this trip possible. “It was great to join [the bands] there and they did a fantastic job! said U.S. Representative Robert Aderholt. “Our nation is divided right now, but these students and their performance are exactly the type [of] things that should bring us together. For a clip of the performance, please see Congressman Aderholt’s Facebook page.
COMMISSION from Page 1 for a special act that he introduced that passed through the legislature earlier this year. Road Superintendent Tom Broyles updated the Commission regarding the CDBG grants that were all completed. He also reported that the regular paving projects were completed as well and this was the earliest completion ever for the year. Broyles also reported that the reclaiming of County Road 712 was in the process of getting chert placed on it today and should be completed by the end of the week. The District 1 building tank has been set and they are hoping that power will be installed in the next two to three weeks, according to Broyles. Jonathan Langley of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office brought forth the resignation of Will Kuykendall to be accepted by the Commission. Langley also gave a U.S. Marshal update regarding housing twenty federal inmates from the Western District of

Tennessee at a cost of $47 per day per inmate. To add twenty additional inmates, the extra officers and vans to transport them would be a startup cost of $120,000, but in return, the County would make $340,000. “Cost-wise, it will be a huge benefit to take on these additional inmates, said Langley. County Administrator Matt Sharp agreed with Langley. The Commission approved the housing of the twenty additional inmates, the purchase of two vans, and the hire of two additional officers for transport when needed. County Administrator Matt Sharp brought forth a Workers’ Compensation resolution. This resolution needs to be passed every three years and it ensures a longevity bonus for staying with the County Commission Workman’s Compensation Insurance. The Commission passed the resolution and it will be in effect until September 2021. The next meeting of the DeKalb County Commission will be held on Tuesday, October 23 at 10am in the DeKalb County Activities Building.
FIRE from Page 1 of the Fire Prevention Week for more than 90 years to promote the years Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere, which works to educate the public about basic but essential ways to quickly and safely escape a home fire.
NFPA statistics show that the number of U.S. home fires has been steadily declining over the past few decades. However, the death rate per 1000 home fires that are reported to fire departments was ten percent higher in 2016 than 1980. People feel safest in their home, but it is also the place people are at greatest risk of fire, with four out of five U.S. fire deaths occurring at home. Chief Ron Safertite of
the Fort Payne Fire Department says this year’s “Look. Listen. Learn. campaign highlights three steps people can take to help quickly and safely escape a fire: LOOK for places fire could start. LISTEN for the sound of the smoke alarm. LEARN 2 ways out of every room. For more information about Fire Prevention Week and home escape planning, visit www.firepreventionweek.org

By Staff Reports POWELL, Ala. — On October 6, 2018, the Student Government Association at Northeast Alabama Community College (NACC) sponsored the 2019 Miss Northeast Alabama Community College Pageant at the Tom Bevill Lyceum on the Northeast campus. The pageant consisted of nine contestants who attend NACC representing many local communities. Miss Brooklyn Chapman of Scottsboro, was crowned Miss Northeast 2019. The Judges’ Interview Award was presented to Brooklyn as well, and Poise and Appearance Award was presented to Adrianne Fox of Fort Payne. POLITICS
Inside the Statehouse
By Steve Flowers AL Political Columnist MONTGOMERY, Ala. — In politics, perception is reality. It is perceived and therefore factual that a Democrat cannot win a statewide race in Alabama. The proof is in the pudding. We have 29 elected statewide officeholders in the Heart of Dixie. All 29 are Republicans. In addition, 6 out of 7 of our members in Congress are Republican. We have one lone Democratic member of Congress. Terri Sewell occupies the seat in Congress designed to be held by an African American. We do have a
temporary accidental anomaly U.S. Senator in Doug Jones. However, as any nominal political observer knows, he is only there until the next election. He is the epitome of the political adage that more people vote against someone than for someone. People were simply voting against Roy Moore and more liberal money poured into Alabama to beat Moore than has ever been sent into Alabama in history and probably ever will be. It was the only race in the country and every socialist liberal group or individual in the nation jumped on board to beat Moore. That anomaly will never happen again. To his credit, Jones is not a demagogue. He is and
has always been a liberal national Democrat. He has been a card carrying, bonafide liberal his entire adult life. He is ideologically more at home and comfortable buddying around with Chuck Schumer, Elizabeth Warren and Nancy Pelosi than with Richard Shelby, Robert Aderholt or Bradley Bryne. He has campaigned for, contributed to and been a Democratic delegate for Walter Mondale, Ted Kennedy, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. He is a true believer. He has felt his oats a bit and gotten involved in trying to change the state Democratic Party organization, which by the way is not very organized. He endorsed his candidate Peck Fox against Nancy Worley for the chairmanship of the defunct Alabama Democratic Party. Worley prevailed because Joe Reed still controls the reigns of the Democratic Party brand in the state. Make no doubt about it, the Democratic Party is the party of African Americans in Alabama. There are a few liberal white Democrats in the state that Reed parades out as face cards. However, he
wants it to remain his party, and essentially that is the case. Make no mistake about it, Alabama politics is still driven by race. Whites are primarily Republicans. Blacks are totally Democratic. Politics is nothing more than simply counting. Basic math if you will. There are simply more white folks that vote than black folks who vote. That is why 29 out of 29 state officeholders are Republican. The Democrats have fielded three viable candidates for statewide office in the upcoming November General Election. They will run good races, but they are not going to win. It will be 29 out of 29 come January. Walt Maddox is the best candidate that the Democrats have had in several decades for Governor. Maddox is 45 and has been Mayor of Tuscaloosa, one of Alabama’s premier and most prosperous cities for 10 years. He is better qualified and much more able to serve as Governor than Kay Ivey. However, Kay is a Republican quasi incumbent, running in a
very good economic time. Her handlers are doing an excellent job of running out the clock and keeping quiet. All they have to do is show pictures of Kay cutting ribbons, claiming credit for economic expansion, aligning herself with Trump and clinging to Confederate monuments. The bottom line is she will win because she is the Republican candidate. Joseph Siegelman, the son of former Governor Don Siegelman, is a viable candidate for Attorney General. He not only is viable but is vibrant and attractive. He is 30-years old with movie star good looks and he also has a good-looking dog. He
exudes integrity and ethics. However, Marshall will prevail over Siegelman because he is the GOP candidate. Although it may be surprising how many votes young Siegelman gets. A lot of folks, including a good many moderate Republicans, believe Siegelman’s dad, Don, was done wrong. He will reap a good many sympathy votes. The third viable Democratic candidate is Robert Vance, Jr., in the race for Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. He will run a good race. However, Tom Parker will prevail because he is the Republican candidate.
