Despite mixed reviews from critics, audience excitement propelled 'Aladdin', the latest in a string of live-action Disney remakes to the top of the box office over the holiday weekend. (Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)
By Zach Hester Art Director I had somewhat of a hesitation heading into 2019’s Aladdin, the latest in a string of live-action remakes from Disney. I was apprehensive about blue Will Smith and I got into one of my random “should these remakes even be happening” phases…but all that changed when I actually sat down in the theater to watch this gorgeous film. Aladdin (mostly) follows the same story that the 1992 animated classic does. It follows street urchin and title character, Aladdin (Mena Massoud), who falls in love with the kept-away Princess Jasmine (Naomi Scott) after a chance encounter in the streets of Agrabah. However, after finding a magic lamp and befriending the wish-granting Genie (Will Smith), he sets out to get the girl of his dreams and stop the conniving grand vizier Jafar (Marwan Kenzari). I was mostly surprised by how much I loved the musical numbers, especially the big budget ones led by Will Smith. “Prince Ali” was easily my favorite that he led, but it’s easy to understand why this new version of “A Whole New World” will be the standout of the film… more on that later. Smith’s take on this legendary role turned out well, even if it didn’t match up to the power of Robin Williams, though I’m not sure anyone would’ve been able to do that. It was a great performance, just a different take. The visual effects deserve a mention. Each and every scene, from the ones inside the Cave of Wonders to the aerial shots of Agrabah, is beautiful. The CGI characters (magic

carpet, Abu, etc.) also played an important role. Both of the two characters I mentioned were well-crafted and provided great moments of comic relief that offset some of the more serious moments. More than anything else in the movie, the chemistry between Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott is outstanding. As I stated, “A Whole New World” is just fantastic, not only because of the great voices behind the microphones, but because of the loving bond these two display. These two pull off the characters that have been cemented in our brains for years so well. Scott portrays Jasmine as more than a damsel waiting to be rescued from a forced marriage and instead longs to replace her father as Sultan (and become a kinder, Agrabah version of Daenerys Targaryen). Massoud’s charm is undeniable. You really root for him right from the start. His scrappy portrayal of Aladdin will definitely be a highlight as you walk out of the theater. I think it’s safe to say that this movie came out of nowhere for me. It’s great to see an entire cast made of people who actually look
like the characters they’re meant to playing. Which is just proof that on-screen representation matters. The movie is charming and heartwarming in the same breath and perfectly represents its message, “be true to yourself.” Forget what the critics are saying, Aladdin is just delightful. Rating: ‡‡‡‡½

BASSMASTERS COMING TO SCOTTSBORO ARMSTRONG SIGNS
By B.A. Little Account Executive
SCOTTSBORO, Ala. — The Bassmasters Elite Series have announced that they are moving one of their elite tournament locations from the west coast to Scottsboro on June 21-24. Goose Pond Colony will be ground zero for the tournament, but many events are planned in conjunction with this elite fishing tournament. It is a favorite for anglers and tournament hosts which ranked Lake Guntersville ninth on the 2018 list of Bassmaster Magazine’s 100 Best Bass Lakes. According to Bassmaster, “The Bassmaster Elite Series is the highest level of professional bass fishing tournaments. Competitors must qualify for the series through the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Opens or the B.A.S.S. Nation, and anglers who are already on the Elite Series must
re-qualify each year by maintaining enough points throughout the season. The pro anglers compete all season for the opportunity to win points toward the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year award and to qualify for the Bassmaster Classic.
Meg Nippers, Events & Marketing Coordinator for the Mountain Lakes Chamber added this insight, “We see a great economic impact on tourism with any fishing tournament, but the Bassmaster Elite Series is something special. We will
be hosting 75 of the country’s top anglers here in Scottsboro at Goose Pond Colony. B.A.S.S. is well-known for putting on great events, and we know this tournament will be no different. Saturday, June 22 will be Military and First Responder Appreciation Day. Simply show a military ID to a B.A.S.S. staff member in the Bassmaster or merchandise booth to receive a free Bassmster hat (limited to the first 100 people). Sunday, June 23 is B.A.S.S. Member Appreciation Day. Show your B.A.S.S. member card to a staff member at the Bassmaster or merchandise booth to received a free Bassmaster hat (limited to the first 100 people). K98 will be broadcasting live at the event and announcing the weigh-in winners each day.
WITH SOUTHERN MISS
By Marla Jones Managing Editor RAINSVILLE, Ala. — Recently, 2018 Plainview graduate Jeffery Armstrong committed to further his basketball career with the University of Southern Mississippi. “We are extremely proud for Jeffery to be afforded this opportunity," said Plainview Head Coach Robi Coker. "We have all witnessed the amount of time and effort he has committed to making this dream possible. To be able to see him mature as a player and man has been a
true joy to watch. He is an incredible young man that has certainly left a lasting impression on our school and community. Coach Ladner and assistant coach Kyle Roane did a great job of recruiting him, and I’m thankful he’s going to be able to play for quality coaches that will do right by him. "Being in Conference USA was certainly a positive for me and my family, and it's close enough to home that my family can see me play," said Armstrong. "My goal is...to get better and be able to help our team be successful."
