DAY TRIP TURNS DEADLY
By Marla Jones Managing Editor
SCOTTSBORO, Ala. — According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, on June 4, an incident occurred on a day trip at the Jackson County Park that resulted in the death of a resident of Haymon Homes. The deceased, 31-year-old Lucius Wayne Frazier, reportedly became
violent with other residents and was then subdued by employees inside the bus. After the incident, Frazier stopped breathing and was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. After receiving numerous questions and inquiries from the public regarding this incident, Southern Torch contacted Haymon Homes. They confirmed the incident occurred and stated the
employees involved are still currently employed with the company and no further action has been taken. Their spokesperson stated they would release an official response. At the time of press, Southern Torch had not received their response. According to the Chief Deputy Rocky Harnen, the Haymon

By Marla Jones, Managing Editor FORT PAYNE, Ala. — The City of Fort Payne recently announced they would be purchasing blank pavers to go in Patriot's Memorial Park. The pavers, which will be replaced by engraved pavers as they are purchased, will be installed within the next few months. Patriot's Park is the latest development in Fort Payne to honor those who have served in the military and either lost their lives or made a significant sacrifice for their country, including veterans of World War I and II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Gulf War, Iraq War and the ongoing conflicts in Afghanistan. While Patriot's Park has taken some time to complete, Fort Payne Councilmember Wade Hill stated at last week's council meeting, "this is a labor of love for a lot of people... we are getting there." There are two paver sizes available for purchase. The 4x8 size has space for three lines of text with 18 characters per line and is sold for $100. The 8x8 size has space for six lines at 18 characters per line and is sold for $200. Purchase forms for engraved pavers are available at the Office of Fort Payne Mayor Larry Chesser, the Office of DeKalb County Revenue Commissioner Tyler Wilks, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) building in Fort Payne.

POLITICS
INSIDE THE STATEHOUSE By Steve Flowers Political Columnist MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Folks, don’t look now, but the 2020 Presidential Election is upon us. Indeed, as many as 21 Democratic aspirants are already announced and campaigning. They are quite a liberal group as you might expect. Leading the pack of Democrats trying to take Donald Trump out of the White House is an avowed, true socialist, Bernie Sanders. Behind ole Bernie are a host of ultra-liberal U.S. Senators who are socialists wannabes. They hail from either the left coasts of California or New England. Included in the pack of CNN/MSNBC/ Stephen Colbert watchers are Elizabeth “Pocahontas Warren of Massachusetts. She makes Teddy Kennedy look like a conservative. You also have Kamala Harris of California,
Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey and losing Texas Senate candidate, Beto O’Rourke, in the race. Our own anomaly Democratic Senator Doug Jones really should run for president next year. He would have a much better chance of winning the Democratic nomination for President than winning a seat in the U.S. Senate from the Heart of Dixie. He has been a liberal Democrat in Alabama his entire adult political life. He has been the soul of the liberal Alabama Democratic Party for decades. He has campaigned and voted for George McGovern, Walter Mondale, Teddy Kennedy, Jesse Jackson, Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton. Since he has been in Washington for the past year, he has organized with and voted with Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi. Therefore, he is just as
liberal with a much lengthier liberal pedigree than all of the aforementioned liberal Democratic Senators in the race; plus he has a proven Civil Rights record. The scenario that occurred in last year’s special election to fill Jeff Sessions’s seat was a perfect storm that will never occur again. First of all, it was the only show in the country and the first opportunity for liberals all over the country to show their distaste for Donald Trump and the Republican Party. Having Judge Roy Moore as an additional lightning rod just added fuel to the fire. It attracted over $20 million of liberal, left-wing money to Doug Jones. He was able to out spend Moore 21 to 3. That is almost impossible to overcome, plus, with it being a Special Election it became a referendum on Doug Jones versus Roy Moore and the Republican
vs Democratic delineation became obscured. During this race, Doug Jones built a national liberal fund-raising base from left-wing America, much like Beto O’Rourke did in Texas. They both have become national stars as Democrats in Red States. Although O’Rourke probably has an edge on Jones in looks and youth. However, recently, Jones appeared on the left leaning Democratic Stephen Colbert Show. Jones may very well be eyeing national politics. Doug Jones, as a lifelong stalwart Democrat, has worked diligently for the State and National Democratic party for most of his adult life. In recent months, he has tried to wrestle some control away from longtime Democratic dictator Joe Reed. It is practically impossible to understand what is going on in the State Democratic Party. Eventually, there
may be a new vote on the party chairmanship. The National Democratic Party has mandated a new election due to the clandestine way that Nancy Worley was elected. The state hierarchy has ignored the National Party. There is no doubt that Joe Reed is still in control of the Alabama Democratic Party. You can bet your bottom dollar that he calls all the shots. My guess is that he has his horse picked out of the 21 Democratic presidential candidates. He asked California Senator, Kamala Harris, to be the keynote speaker at his Alabama Democratic Conference
June annual event. Therefore, Senator Harris might be a good horse to bet on to win next year’s March third Alabama Democratic Presidential Primary. The Democratic Party in Alabama continues to be a big mess. The bottom line is that on the state level the Party is essentially irrelevant. The odds of a Democratic candidate for President carrying Alabama or a Democratic nominee winning any statewide race in the Heart of Dixie is slim to none. See you next week.

INSIDE THE HUDDLE WITH THE COLLINSVILLE PANTHERS
L (
2019 SCHEDULE By Marla Jones Sports Editor COLLINSVILLE, Ala. — In DeKalb and Jackson Counties, we know football fans are anticipating the upcoming football season as much as we are. Football is a way of life for us, even our weddings are planned around games. Each week until the season starts, Southern Torch will visit a local team and give you the inside scoop. On my first stop of Inside The Huddle, our
crew made the trek to southern DeKalb County to check out what’s going on with the Collinsville Panthers! Collinsville finished their 2018 season with a 10-2 record and lost in the second round of the state playoffs to Aliceville, 20-9. Preparation: As I pulled up to the Collinsville Panthers’ football field, I looked at my thermometer and it was 95 degrees. The heat did not stop the Panthers as they ran sprint after sprint. The Collinsville Panthers will boast one
8/23 @ Plainview 8/30 Crossville 9/6 NSM 9/13 @ Fyffe 9/20 Ider 10/4 Section 10/11 @ Asbury 10/18 Sand Rock 10/25 @ Cedar Bluff 11/1 @ Valley Head
of the most physically fit teams in the county this year.
The team ran for 30 minutes, did physical conditioning for 45
minutes and then put on their helmets for practice for another hour. They also attended two football camps during the same week with heat indexes over 100 degrees. The team is anchored by 11 seniors and nine juniors. The Panthers have nine returning on offense and nine returning on defense. Coaching Staff: Head Coach James “Ernie” Willingham, Coach Riley Edwards (Defensive Coordinator/Line, Offensive Line), Coach
Jon Tidmore (Junior High), Coach Shane Stewart (Receivers), Coach Chris Conde (Offensive Line), Coach Jeff Stanley (Offensive Line/Defensive Line), Coach Mike McElrath (Running Backs), Coach Teddy Helms (Special Teams), Coach Chuck Dutton (Linebackers), and John Morgan (Stats). I look forward to seeing the Collinsville Panthers in action this fall and expect them to go deep into the playoffs, again in the 2019 season!
•SPOTLIGHT ON COACHES• By Marla Jones, Sports Editor • marla@southerntorch.com
COLLINSVILLE, Ala. — The Southern Torch Coach of the Week is Coach James (Ernie) Willingham, Head Coach of the Collinsville Panthers Varsity Football Team. Coach Ernie Willingham is a Collinsville graduate. After receiving his degree from Jacksonville, he was the Head Coach at Appalachian from 1984-1991. He accepted a job with Albertville City Schools to coach basketball from 1991-1993 before returning to Appalachian for five more years. In 1998, Willingham landed his first football coaching job as Head Coach at Collinsville. While at Collinsville for five years, his team went 31-24. The Panthers reached the playoffs in four out of the five seasons. In 2003, Willingham answered the call to return to Appalachian, to coach basketball and took over the football program in 2004 for seven seasons, Coach Willingham moved back to his hometown, in Collinsville, in 2013. Coach Ernie Willingham is married to Nina Willingham. They have three daughters: Kim, Kayla and Kendall. Coach Willingham will be entering his twelfth season at Collinsville. He has lead the Panthers to eight playoff appearances. The Collinsville Panthers have won two region championships under the leadership of Willingham. In the 2016 season, Willingham earned his 100th win as Head Coach. Willingham is a modest man, and just said of the honor “that means you are getting old.” Southern Torch wishes Coach Willingham and his Collinsville Panthers the best of luck in their upcoming season.
