By Zach Hester Reporter USA ­â€” If you ask anyone around my age (mid-twenties) "What year did we go to the moon?," I can almost guarantee that a song from the Disney Channel original television series Even Stevens is likely what pops into your head. The lyrics go like this: “We went to the moon in 1969 / Not 1968 but the year after...we went to the moon in 1969 / Not 1970 but a year sooner.â€? The song may be a corny way to remember the day that our world grew a little bigger, but regardless, it’s a solid reminder of the day that the United States of America, the greatest country in the entire world, placed a man on the moon.

RAINSVILLE, Ala. — (Full LIVE Video on our Facebook) At this week’s meeting of the Rainsville City Council, Council Pro Tem Ricky Byrum conducted the meeting in the absence of Mayor Rodger Lingerfelt. In the workshop, City Engineer Sam Phillips explained the expanded paving project for Rainsville city roads. The Council approved Wiregrass Construction as the low bidder at $278,971.10. The roads to be resurfaced are: 1st, 2nd,

3rd and 4th Streets SW, along with Harrison, Oak Drive and Massingale Lane. The Council approved a lease agreement between The Public Building Authority of the City of Rainsville (PBA) and the City of Rainsville. The lease began on July 1, 2019 and ends on June 30, 2020. The monthly lease payments will total $220,000 to be paid by the City. In addition to the lease payments, the City will pay $120,000 annually for the operation and maintenance of the Agricenter as required by the Code of Alabama, Section 42-25A-140.

Officer-Involved Shooting in Fort Payne By Staff Reports FORT PAYNE, Ala. — On July 16th and approximately 9:25 pm Chief Randy Bynum stated a call about a Domestic Violence situation came into the Fort Payne Police Department. Officers were dispatched to the area of the 4100 block of Fischer Road NE. The caller stated that there was a male subject attempting to pour gasoline on a female subject who was the home owner. Bynum stated when officers arrived on

the scene, the suspect, later identified as Jeffery Scott Johnson, age 40 of Fort Payne, had stolen a white minivan and left the scene. While officers were gathering information on the domestic call Mr. Johnson came back by the residence. The victim and

the officers identified the van and officers attempted to stop the vehicle Bynum said. Mr. Johnson turned onto Dean Road and traveled approximately a mile turning off his lights and traveling at a high rate of speed attempting to elude officers before turning into a driveway. Mr. Johnson backed out of the driveway and attempted to ram a Fort Payne Police vehicle. Mr. Johnson’s vehicle ended up

Chief Bynum stated a Fort Payne Police Officer attempted to get Mr. Johnson to put his vehicle in park and exit the van, instead Mr. Johnson refused officers commands and accelerated toward the officer. The Fort Payne Police Officer fired his service weapon at Mr. Johnson’s vehicle as he was in fear of being struck by Mr. Johnson. Mr. Johnson was struck by gunfire and treated at the scene by Fort Payne Officers, DeKalb County Sheriff’s Officers, Fort Payne Fire and Rescue Personnel and DeKalb County Ambulance Service Personnel. Chief Bynum stated Mr. Johnson was transported to DeKalb Regional where he was

treated for his gun shot wounds and later airlifted to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga. At the present time Mr. Johnson is being charged with Theft of Property in the first degree and Domestic Violence in the second degree, each charge has a $100,000 bond for a total of $200,000. The investigation continues with more charges forthcoming Bynum stated. Bynum stated investigation teams consisted of Fort Payne Police Department Detectives, State Bureau of Investigation, Jacksonville State Center for Applied Forensics Unit and Dekalb County Sheriff’s Office.

We’re basically putting it back in their hands.â€? Councilmember Marshall Stiefel stated that he had several concerns regarding this agreement. “Due to problems in the past, I feel that transparency with the PBA Board and Agri-Business Center needs to be a top priority. There is a lot of tax money being used to fund this facility and the City should have oversight over how the money is spent.â€? said Stiefel. CHASE from Page 1 Department, the chase began in Blount County and the vehicle traveled on Highway 75 through Douglas and into DeKalb County where officers from both the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office and Geraldine Police Department joined them. After evading spike strips, the driver hit a DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office vehicle after attempting to hit officers in Geraldine. The driver was

ultimately shot when the officers fired multiple rounds into the vehicle. The driver was taken to Marshall Medical Center South in Boaz before being airlifted to Huntsville Hospital, where at last report, he remains stable. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation is in charge of the investigation and officers with the Albertville Police Department are on paid leave as part of the department’s protocol. Whole Backstage veteran Johnny Brewer will direct this 1982 British farce with a cast of nine requiring 5 males, and 4 females. This high-energy comedy is non-stop in which lovers frolic, doors slam, clothes are tossed away, and embarrassing hijinks ensue. Noises Off! is a play within a play by the English playwright Michael Frayn, with dilemmas that develop early in the story. By Staff Reports POWELL, Ala. — Last month, members of the Atlanta-based FEMA Region 4 Incident Management Assistance Team (IMAT) visited Northeast Alabama Community College to participate in a readiness exercise ahead of the 2019 Atlantic Hurricane season. During the two-day exercise, team members evaluated their level of disaster-response readiness and ability to properly utilize all individually and team-issued equipment ranging from laptops and satellite phones to iPads and cell phones. “FEMA is so important in time of crisis and we certainly have benefited from their work in our area with the weather issues that we have had in recent years,” stated NACC President Dr. David Campbell. “We are very pleased to be able to host them for their training.” NACC serves as the Division E Emergency Operations Center (EOC) for the Alabama Emergency Management Agency. MOON from Page 1 This Saturday, July 20, 2019 is the 50th anniversary of that legendary event in modern history. Back in 1969, an estimated 530 million people watched the broadcast. President Kennedy said in 1962, “We choose to go to the moon in this

decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win.� The celebration of this crowning achievement

may have been at Houston’s Johnson Space Center here on the face of the Earth we know so well, the real triumph was taking place on the surface of a brand new world. The long-awaited goal was achieved. A man was walking on the moon. INSIDE THE STATEHOUSE By Steve Flowers Political Columnist MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The 2020 Presidential Election year has already begun. It usually begins on Labor Day of the year prior to the Election. However, in recent decades the parade has started early. They really are four-year caravans. They begin the day after the President is sworn in. Indeed, President Trump never shut down his campaign organization. He essentially has never stopped campaigning. He loves to campaign. He loves to entertain. That is really what he was before he was President and that is what he has been as President, an entertainer. He treats the Presidency as though it is an extension and continuation of his television game show. As long as he is the center of attention he is happy. Trump is amazingly

similar to our two most colorful and prominent Alabama political icons, Big Jim Folsom and George Wallace. He is just as uninhibited and disarming as Big Jim was with the same irreverence for protocol and decorum. He is similar to Wallace in that he really likes campaigning and prefers campaigning to governing. Wallace really didn’t want to govern, he just liked running and getting elected governor. Speaking of Wallace, he liked to run for President also. He ran several times. He usually ran under some third-party banner. As he ran around the country running as a third-party state’s rights candidate, he would proclaim that there is not a dimes worth of difference in the national Democratic and Republican parties. However, even Wallace could not say that with a straight face today. Folks, there are a lot of

philosophical differences in the national Republican and Democratic parties. They really should change their names to the Conservative and Liberal parties. The Republican Party is extremely conservative and the Democratic Party is very liberal. This extreme philosophy by each party is what has driven people into different political corners and is the reason for the political polarization of American politics. The electronic media and news networks have further driven and enhanced this polarization. Fox News Network is simply the network that Republicans watch. CNN and MSNBC could be and people assume they are appendages of the national Democratic Party. The CBS Stephen Colbert show is unashamedly the hate Donald Trump show. They should change the title to

that name. The two-party machinery and nomination process is designed to choose a presidential contender as their nominee that is from the extreme segment of the party. This is especially true in the Democratic ranks. Therefore, the probability of a left wing socialist like Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren being the nominee is likely. This does not bode well for our anomaly junior Democratic U.S. Senator Doug Jones. He will be running along with one of his liberal Democratic buddies. Jones has organized and voted lockstep with the Democrats since his arrival last year, which is what most folks who know Jones expected. He is a real national, liberal Democrat. He has always been and will always be a Democrat. In Jones’s defense, he

is not a demagogue. He will not change his stripes or beliefs to get elected. That was evident with his vote against the conservative Trump Supreme Court appointee, Brett Kavanaugh. Jones was the only Southern Senator to vote against Trump. Indeed, Jones is the only Democratic Senator in the Deep South. His being on the ticket with the Democratic Presidential candidate in November 2020 in the Heart of Dixie, makes his chance of being elected slim-to-none. It would be a surprise if he gets 40% even with a ton of left-wing money pouring into the state on his behalf. Last year’s General Election proved we are a Red Republican State. One of the most Republican in the Nation. Donald Trump, or for that matter any Republican, will carry Alabama next year. Mickey Mouse would carry

Alabama 60 to 40 if he were the nominee. However, Donald Duck would carry California and New York if he were the Democratic nominee. Folks, I hate to break it to you, but California and New York have more electoral votes than we do. It was just as much an anomaly that Donald Trump carried Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and even Ohio and Florida, as it was that Doug Jones won in Alabama. As we look to the 2020 elections, it is evident that Alabama is a Republican state. However, the United States is probably a Democratic nation. See you next week. By Marla Jones Sports Editor CROSSVILLE, Ala. — For our second stop on this season of Inside The Huddle, we stopped in to see the Crossville Lions. The Crossville Lions’ motto comes from Head Coach Dusty Darnell, “Quit being satisfied with just being enough.� The Lions are putting in the time to be more than enough this season through camps, workouts and endless hours of practice time. The Crossville Lions Varsity Football team is no stranger to adversity. The team has made it through rough times and

adapted the developing changes in their leadership. Block by block, the Crossville Lions are rebuilding their foundation back. They have 25 former guys that wore the black and gold that have given back to the team thus far. Their goal is to get 100 former Lions to donate $100 to be a Lion Pride donor. Their support will go to support pre-game meals, upgrades to the field house and stadium, and equipment needs. Donations can be made to the Crossville Athletic Club. The Lions finished their 2018 season with a

2-8 record, with 1-5 in region play. Coach Darnell begins his second season as Head Coach for the Lions with two returning seniors. CROSSVILLE, Ala. — The Southern Torch Coach of the Week is Dusty Darnell, Head Coach of the Crossville Lions! Darnell is an alumnus of Crossville High School and graduated in the Class of 1997. He went on to attend Jacksonville State University and graduated with a degree in physical education. He is married to Holly Darnell and they have three children: Dirks, Lynley and Dax. Darnell served as an offensive coordinator at Sardis High School for eight years before returning home to help at Crossville. This is his second year to serve as a head coach. Good luck to Dusty Darnell and the Crossville Lions this season!
