By Marla Jones, Managing Editor FORT PAYNE, Ala. — As the first day of school approaches, many parents face the financial burden of purchasing school supplies for their children. At the June 5 meeting of the Fort Payne City Council, Fort Payne City Schools Superintendent Jim Cunningham was presented with two checks for the supplies by the City Council. To lighten the load for parents in the Fort Payne School District, the Fort Payne City Council allotted $150,000 to pay for all the necessary supplies. The second check was the city’s regular donation of $50,00 per year. Cunningham thanked the Council on behalf of the approximately 3,200 students who will benefit from these donations. The allotment will allow the school system to spend around $50 per student. “I think it is important to sow into the lives of our children, because the children are our future, stated Fort Payne City Council President Brian Baine. “Giving this money to purchase school supplies not only helps the students, but it also helps the classroom and ultimately it helps the families of these children with the expense of back to school essentials. The first day of school for Fort Payne City, Cornerstone Christian Academy and DeKalb County students will be on Wednesday, August 7, 2019.

LATE TO THE MOVIES 'The Lion King' delivers stellar visuals in stunning remake

WALT DISNEY STUDIOS

By Zach Hester Reporter Anytime it comes up in conversation, I’m quick to interject that my favorite movie of all time is The Lion King. The animated classic was a pillar of my childhood. Now, twenty-five years later, it’s still just as incredible, moving and pure cinematic delight. This week, we got a remake. I was hesitant, as I always am with all Disney remakes, but more so with this film because of the influence it has held over me for so long. This year’s Aladdin remake turned out to be outstanding, so as the date neared for The Lion King “live action take, my hopes were high. Naturally, I’ve got a lot of thoughts on this film, but let’s have a quick refresher on the story. It’s Hamlet with lions. There’s your refresher. I kid. The Lion King follows the same plot as the 1994 animated masterpiece, only now with magnificently realistic CGI. The story follows Simba (JD McCrary, Donald Glover), a lion living in the Pride Lands who must take his place as the rightful ruler of his people after the murder of his father Mufasa (James Earl Jones) by his conniving uncle Scar (Chiwetel Ejiofor). Any Disney remake is bound to divide longtime fans, but The Lion King seems to be the most divisive yet. Despite knowing this beforehand, I highly enjoyed the remake of my favorite movie. Let’s begin with the animation. The film is billed as a “live action remake, but absolutely nothing in this movie is real. You read that right. It’s clear that the talking/singing animals are

computer generated but the scenic African plains and jungle are also animated. It seems like this photorealistic animation seems to be the most divisive aspect of the film with critics saying that the lack of facial expressions, the “magic of the original film is gone. I can agree with that to a certain extent, but I also think the film’s animation allows enough expressiveness to convey feelings. It definitely pales in comparison to the original in this aspect, but I never got mad at these brilliant visuals throughout the film. It’s easy to see this film as a strong contender for Best Visual Effects at next year’s Oscars. The criticism of the animation flows into the conversation on the new music in the film. The performances were obviously less over-the-top, but the new vocals from the voice cast remain great. “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King and “Can You Feel The Love Tonight? are both outstanding numbers in the remake. Pretty much anything that Beyonce does in the film is outstanding actually. From “Spirit which plays during the film (I think it should’ve been over the credits instead) to the album she actually curated called The Lion King: The Gift, the songs she features on are phenomenal. Speaking of Beyonce,

Nala and other female roles are expanded in the film. She takes on a more of a leadership role in the battle against Scar and we actually see her journey to get to Simba during the film as well. Shenzi, the leader of the Hyenas, also sees a bigger role. It’s clear that the hyenas are more loyal to her than even Scar himself. Now we move to Scar. He seems to be the most controversial character by far in the remake. Chiwetel Ejiofor delivers a much darker, driven madman as opposed to the flamboyant, conniving genius that’s portrayed by Jeremy Irons in the original movie. “Be Prepared has been widely criticized as the “worst song in the remake, but after seeing the song (more like a slam poem) in the film, it works so well with the new take on Scar. I actually think Ejiofor’s performance was my favorite in the whole film. There also needs to be a special shoutout to Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen, who voice Timon and Pumbaa. These two absolutely steal the show every time they’re on screen. Also, who knew Eichner was such a great singer? Not me. The story of The Lion King will always be special. The original animated version has been my favorite film for a very long time and this new version did not disappoint me in the slightest. It captures the magic of the original as closely as it could while maintaining the new, realistic animation that should be considered groundbreaking in the realm of visual effects. I got the chance to see this film twice already and I’d see it again in a heartbeat. No matter what medium we see The Lion King take on in the future, after seeing this film, I know it will likely remain exceptional.

It was a beautiful movie. Loved it! — Mary Gardner

It was good, can't say that I loved it. — Staci Darwin Gilbert Be sure to leave your feedback on the next entry of Late to the Movies on Southern Torch!

Friends of

Fischer Rescue By Staff Reports FISCHER, Ala. — Friends of Fischer Rescue Squad was formed to honor the life of Laurence F. Mahoney who passed away on November 10, 2014. The family of Mr. Mahoney wanted a worthy cause for the donations that were being given in Mr. Mahoney’s memory. June, Larry’s sister felt strongly that “brother would want the funds donated to the Fischer Rescue Squad, an integral part of the community where Larry and his wife resided. The Fischer Rescue Squad is one of the oldest operating rescue squads in the State of Alabama and is the oldest in DeKalb County. The squad was organized in the early1960 by the Fischer Explorer Scouts for the purpose of search and rescue and have been in operation since. The proud volunteer members have a goal to save lives and serve their community. In Larry’s lifetime, he served his N.H. community by volunteering as a ballot clerk for over 20 years. He helped widows when he lived in Florida doing any odd job that needed to be done. His philosophy of life was that giving of your time and talents by others was the greatest gift you could give. Because Larry was a volunteer and believed so strongly in the power of volunteerism his widow, wanting to do something to honor the life of her husband created the Friends of the Fischer Rescue Squad. The Friends of the Rescue Squad meet monthly and plan and carry out the fundraising activities for which all proceeds go to the Fischer Rescue Squad. Currently we are working diligently to raise enough funds to purchase a new, reliable rescue vehicle. Since their founding meeting in March they have held two fundraising activities and raised just over $11,500.00 with a goal of $75,000.00. They strongly believe that volunteers who risk their lives while trying to save others deserve not only our respect but also our support. If you would like to help financially, please send your tax-deductible donation to “Friends of Fischer Rescue Squad in care of T. Mahoney, 146 Harley Drive NE Fort Payne, Alabama 35967.

In God We Trust PHOTO BY MARSHALL STIEFEL

By Staff Reports RAINSVILLE, Ala. — Members of the DeKalb County Republican Women presented DeKalb County Superintendent Dr. Jason Barnett with the first poster with DeKalb County Schools' motto "In God We Trust." "It's a simple message, but I believe [it's] a powerful message," said Rep. David Standridge, who introduced the bill in Alabama. "In God We Trust" officially became the national motto of the United States in 1956 when Congress passed it and President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed it into law. Alabama Law states: "An Act, Relating to government agencies and offices; to permit the use of the national motto by government agencies and offices in and on government buildings,

including government office buildings, public school classrooms, and on vehicles. The governing body of any political subdivision of the state or any state agency may display the National Motto "In God We Trust" in and on public buildings and public vehicles, including, but not limited to any of the following: School classrooms, Courthouses, Libraries, Office buildings, Law enforcement or service vehicles. Governor Kay Ivey signed this into law on July 1, 2018." The DeKalb County Republican Women's club have purchased "In God We Trust" posters for every classroom in the DeKalb County school system. It is the teachers' choice as to whether they take one for their classroom or not. The posters will be available to all teacher who would like to have one on August 1 at the "In Service" work day.
