By Staff Reports FORT PAYNE, Ala. — From the Office of DeKalb County Sheriff Nick Welden: Two suspects are in custody regarding the fire at Mike’s Tire in Crossville last week.

The two were caught on surveillance camera attempting to steal gasoline at approximately 3:30 am last Tuesday morning at Mike’s Tire on Highway 227. The vehicle ignited while one of the offenders was attempting to drill a hole in the gas tank.

The fire burned 5

vehicles and one of the buildings at the business; causing approximately $150,000 worth of damage.

Chris Ennis (21 of Gadsden) was officially charged today with Criminal Mischief 1st Degree and Arson 3rd Degree.

Ennis was already in custody on charges of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of Controlled Substance, Attempting to Elude, Failure to Comply, and a Probation Violation. Ennis

The Council presented the first reading of an ordinance annexing certain property located off of Roden Drive in the Fischer community and solely owned by Marlin and Ann Blalock. The property is proposed to be a sub-division. Since it was a first reading, Ordinance 2019-03 will be carried

over until the next Council meeting.

The Council approved the following Resolutions: • Resolution 2019-36Officially accepted the low bid, after negations for the interior construction of the Public Works Building. • Resolution 2019-37 Accepted the lowest qualified bid for the “Special Asphalt Mixâ€? required by ALDOT for the Jordan Road paving project.

By Staff Reports FORT PAYNE, Ala. — From the Office of DeKalb County Sheriff Nick Welden: Last Thursday night, Deputies and Agents with the Sheriff’s Office Narcotics and Criminal Interdiction Unit assisted the Collinsville Police Department with a saturation operation in the city limits of Collinsville.

Deputies wrote numerous traffic citations and warnings on the roadways as a result of traffic stops. Nine were also arrested after several narcotics related complaints from citizens were investigated.

At a residence on Gregory Avenue, seven were arrested after Methamphetamine, Marijuana, and Drug Paraphernalia was found.

Several at the residence also had outstanding warrants.

FROM PAGE 1 had led the Crossville Police Department and a Deputy with DeKalb Co. Sheriff’s Office on a foot pursuit in Crossville last Friday in an unrelated incident.

The other suspect, Drew Tidwell (19 of Albertville) was taken into custody late this afternoon by investigators. Tidwell is charged with Criminal Mischief 1st Degree and Arson 3rd Degree.

DeKalb County Sheriff Nick Welden said of the arrest: “I’d like to congratulate our investigators on a job well done in closing this case.

These guys have worked hard on it since the incident occurred last week.”

“I’d also like to thank the public for sharing the

video and helping us develop leads in the case.

Tips directly helped with charging the suspects with this crime. If this business and another nearby business did not have a surveillance system, this would have been a much more difficult case.”

Explained Sheriff Welden.

“This also needs to be a lesson to our younger people. In this case, attempting to commit a small crime turned into a much larger one. These suspects will be facing major consequences for their actions,” he concluded.

Kimberly Daniel (51 of Collinsville) was also arrested at the residence on Wednesday night.

In a separate operation on Wednesday night, the Sheriff’s Office Narcotics and Criminal Interdiction Unit conducted a search at a residence on Williams Avenue in Fort Payne with assistance of the Fort Payne Police Department.

Anthony Burt (51 of Fort Payne) and Rebecca Bevel (58 of Fort Payne) were arrested on several charges after methamphetamine, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia were found. Multiple firearms were also seized at the residence.

Bevel was charged

with Distribution of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Marijuana 2nd, Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Drug Paraphernalia. Burt was charged with Distribution of a Controlled Substance, Possession of a Controlled Substance, And Drug Paraphernalia.

DeKalb County Sheriff Nick Welden said of the operation: “One important role of the Sheriff’s Office is to assist our partner agencies with combatting the drug problem in our county.

We’re more than happy to help take this poison off the streets throughout the entire county.”

“Especially in cases such as Gregory Avenue in Collinsville. The residence was a short distance away from a park where children of the neighborhood play. Many good people live in the area, and shouldn’t have to raise their children around that,” said Sheriff Welden.

Collinsville Police Chief Rex Leath said of the operation: “Thursday night’s arrests were by excellent teamwork from the two agencies. I would like to thank Sheriff Nick Welden and the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Without them Thursday night’s drug saturation would not have been possible.”

“We are in the fight against drugs day in and day out in Collinsville and across DeKalb County; as well as across the State of Alabama. When departments pull resources together, we can chisel away at the drug problem that is destroying families and lives in our county,” said Chief Leath.

“Most importantly, if you see something, say something! Together we can make a difference, and make DeKalb County a safe place for our children,” he concluded.

DeKALB BAND EXHIBITION SET FOR SEPT. 15

FORT PAYNE, Ala. — The marching bands of DeKalb County are preparing to take the field in exhibition this month.

The annnual DeKalb County Marching Band Expo will be held from 3pm to 5pm on Sunday, September 15 at Fort Payne High School.

The exhibition, where bands are encouraged to show off their halftime show instead of vying for trophies, helps each of

them prepare for upcoming competitions like Gadsden's MidSouth Marching Festival.

All seven of DeKalb County's marching bands will participate this year.

The performance order will be: Sylvania, Geraldine, Ider, Fyffe, Crossville, Plainview, and Fort Payne.

The event is sponsored by the DeKalb County Band Association.

Admission is $5 per person.

Two Open Congressional Seats in 2019

By Steve Flowers AL Political Columnist MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Governor Kay Ivey has had a very successful first year as governor.

One of the coups she pulled off was getting the legislature to pass legislation granting the governor the power to appoint the Board of Pardons and Paroles.

The new law will give her all the new appointments to the Parole Board. Previously, the three-member Board picked the director.

The new law went into effect on September 1, 2019 and Gov. Ivey wasted no time selecting the new director. She appointed longtime political figure, former Attorney General and former Mobile County Circuit Judge Charlie Graddick.

Ivey also supported a measure that would make the state school board appointed rather than elected. This proposal will have to be

approved by Alabama voters in next year’s election. This one may have tougher sledding.

Alabamians are reluctant to give up their rights to vote for their public officials.

Agriculture Commissioner Rick Pate is continuing a great summer political tradition in Montgomery.

Pate, who is Alabama’s 27th Commissioner of Agriculture, hosted the 9th Annual Tomato Sandwich luncheon. The menu included homegrown Wiregrass tomatoes and corn on the cob. It also includes lots of politics. Some of those in attendance were former Agriculture Commissioner and now State Treasurer John McMillan, Secretary of State John Merrill, State Auditor Jim Ziegler, and State Senators Will Barfoot and Tom Whatley.

announcement in late July that she was not going to seek reelection to a sixth two-year term next year. Roby was considered safe in the seat after withstanding a challenging election year in 2018. She drew significant opposition in the GOP Primary after her 2016 announcement that she was not supporting Donald Trump. Even though she received less votes than most of the other Republican members of the Alabama House delegation, she did survive and would have had smooth sailing and a long tenure in the House.

She was on good committees and was one of only 13 female Republican congresswomen in the U.S. House. Therefore, she was a darling in the eyes of the House leadership and had a bright future in Congress.

My guess is that she simply burned out on the demanding life of Congress where you are constantly campaigning and raising money, flying back and forth to Washington and actually doing the job of voting your district’s wishes and handling constituents’ work. She

also has two young children and a husband who has a successful law career.

She made the right decision for herself. She will have a much more enjoyable and rewarding life, and if, she practices law or lobbies, a much more lucrative lifestyle.

This leaves two open Republican seats. This second district seat, which encompasses all of the Wiregrass, parts of Montgomery and the burgeoning counties of Elmore and Autauga, will be a wide-open and very contested and interesting race. It is a Republican district.

The early favorite to win the seat is Dothan businessman Jeff Coleman. He has been very involved civic wise in the Wiregrass and statewide for years. He will also have unlimited personal funds and will spend them.

Whoever wins the second district seat will be subject to an alteration in the district.

We are expected to lose a seat after the 2020 census. Most observers expect this second district to merge into a portion of the third congressional district. It will more than likely pick

The Council approved the installation of a “speed table� on 66th Street in the vicinity of Allen Memorial Church to help control traffic.

Two Fort Payne Citizens came before the Council to discuss unattended dog in their neighborhood. The concerned citizens advised the Council that the animals were suffering from animal cruelty and that neighbors were leaving food to prevent the animals from starving to death.

The next meeting of the Fort Payne City Council will be held on Tuesday, September 17 at 12pm on the second floor of Fort Payne City Hall.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Last month, a resolution was approved by the Alabama Republican Party that called for the expulsion of Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) for what the sponsor, State Rep. Tommy Hanes (R-Bryant), refers to as “anti-American� sentiments. “I believe [Omar] has broken her oath of office with her anti-American statements. I’m calling upon the Alabama delegation in Washington to start proceedings to expel her from her seat in the House of Representatives,� said Hanes, who has represented Alabama’s 23rd state house district since 2015.

In addition to the second district open seat, the first congressional district is a battle royale. Bradley Byrne has vacated this

congressional seat to make a race for the U.S. Senate. A trio of stellar candidates are vying to be the congressman from the Mobile-Baldwin area. It will definitely remain a Republican seat. Vying for the GOP nomination are State Representative Chris Pringle, former State Senator Bill Hightower, and Mobile County Commissioner Jerry Carl.

This one will probably be more interesting than the second district.

2020 is shaping up to be a good political year in the Heart of Dixie. The primaries are early on March 3, 2020.

Ivey Declares Toll

Bridge Project 'Dead'

By Zach Hester, Reporter MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Last week, Governor Kay Ivey declared a Mobile Bay toll bridge as "dead" after officials voted to remove the project from their "Transportation Improvement Plan."

The project, which would've been the most expensive transportation plan in state history, was voted down 8-1 by the Eastern Shore Metropolitan Planning Organization (ESMPO). The organization consists of local officials around the Mobile Bay area.

"With the action taken today, there is no pathway forward, and this project is dead," said Ivey, moments after the vote. The Governor maintained that the project was critical for the region.

The group's almost unanimous decision came at the end of a 4-hour meeting where County residents expressed concerns over the bridge's tolls that could have cost up to $6 each way. Unlimited toll passes could've been purchased on a monthly basis for $90.

"If bridge equals tolls, then the citizens of coastal Alabama choose no bridge, no toll," said Daphne Mayor Dane Haygood, the chair of the ESMPO, according to video coverage from FOX10 TV. Following the failed vote, Ivey canceled the October 7 meeting of the state toll road and bridge authority, where she was scheduled to discuss the project.

By Marla Jones Sports Editor RAINSVILLE, Ala. — Fans were on the edge of their seats as Plainview defeated the North Jackson Chiefs, in a 36-35 overtime victory on Friday night.

After a scoreless first quarter marred with penalties, interceptions, and turnovers, the Plainview Bears saw the endzone first with 11:53 remaining in the first half. Brody McCurdy

bulldozed his way in from 2-yards out for the score. The extra point attempt by Geo Chapparo made the score 7-0. The North Jackson Chiefs answered back quickly with an 58-yard touchdown pass.

The PAT failed making the score 7-6. North Jackson struck again with 3:30 remaining in the first half on a 89-touchdown reception. The Chiefs went for 2 and went up 14-7. With :23 remaining

in the half, Logan Bell had a pick 6. The two-point conversion by Noah White gave the Bears the 15-14 advantage going into the half.

With 5:10 remaining in the third quarter, McCurdy added another 9-yard rushing touchdown to the Bears total. The kick by Chapparo was good, giving the Bears the 22-14 lead. With 2:36 remaining in the third quarter, North Jackson

scored on a 31-yard rushing touchdown. The extra point attempt failed. With :47 remaining in the third, McCurdy scored on a 7-yard touchdown to go into the fourth with the 28-20 lead.

North Jackson scored with 4:07 remaining in regulation play and went for two to tie the game 28-28.

North Jackson won the toss to go into overtime play. The Chiefs scored on the third play

of overtime with a 5-yard rushing touchdown. The extra point attempt was good. Plainview answered back scoring on fourth and eight with a 8-yard connection from Noah White to Brody Parker. The Bears went for two and Brody McCurdy scored from 3-yards out to win the battle, 36-35.

The Chiefs finished the night with 386 rushing yards and 126 passing yards. Plainview had 222 rushing yards

and 63 passing yards for the night.

Brody McCurdy led the Bears with 175 total yards and three touchdowns.

The Plainview Bears have been awarded the Southern Torch Team of the Week for their remarkable efforts in their overtime victory.

The Plainview Bears (1-1) will begin region play this week as they host the Geraldine Bulldogs (1-1).

IDER STINGS RAMS TAME THE BRONCOS

HOLLY POND, Ala. — The Ider Hornets defeat the Holly Pond Broncos, 17-2 on Friday night.

The game was back and forth throughout the night with both teams fumbling and throwing interceptions.

With 7:00 remaining in the first half, Holly Pond scored the only points of the half, on a safety, to make the score 2-0.

Ider kicked a 50 yard field goal by Benjamin Klausen with 7:00 remaining in the third to take the 3-2 lead. With 1:34 remaining in the third, Klausen connected on a long touchdown pass, to score. The PAT was good and Ider had the 10-2 advantage over the Broncos.

With 1:34 remaining in the game, Klausen intercepts the Bronco ball and runs it back 32 yards for the Ider touchdown and gave the Ider Hornets the 17-2 victory.

Seth Hawkins led the Ider Hornets with 77 yards on 21 carries. Klausen had two interceptions and two touchdowns for the night.

Ider (1-0) will travel to take on the Sand Rock Wildcats (1-0) in a region game on Friday.

SARDIS CITY, Ala. — The Sylvania Rams tamed the Sardis Lions, 21-12, on Friday night.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Rams scored with 5:25 remaining in the first half on a 70-yard touchdown by Gareth Anderson. The Rams took the 7-0 advantage into the half.

Coming back from the half, the Rams scored on a rushing touchdown to pad their lead to 14-0. Sardis answered back with a touchdown. The extra point failed. At the end of the third quarter, Sylvania lead 14-6.

With 1:37 remaining in the game, Sardis scored. The Rams stopped the two-point conversion, to maintain the 14-12 lead. After a back and forth during the fourth quarter, The Rams held Sardis on 4th and goal. Sylvania regained the ball and with :37 left, to seal the Lions fate with a touchdown and to make the final score 21-12 Sylvania (1-0) will host Susan Moore Bulldogs (2-0) in region play on Friday night.

Fort Payne struck quickly on a pass connection from J.D. Blalock to Matthew

By Marla Jones, Sports Editor GERALDINE, Ala. — The Fyffe Red Devils shutout the Geraldine Bulldogs 28-0 on Friday night.

The Red Devils, scored first on a 70-yard touchdown drive. Zach Pryon connected with Brody Dalton on a 37-yard pass. Kyle Dukes brought it in from 5-yards out, two plays later. The kick by Dalton gave the Red Devils the 7-0 advantage with 9.28 remaining in the opening quarter.

The Bulldogs fell short on a fourth down conversions, giving the ball back to the Red Devils in the second quarter. Fyffe bulldozed their way down the field and 12-plays and 80 yards later, Zach Pryon powered up the middle with :42 remaining in the first half on a quarterback keeper. The kick by Dalton was good and Fyffe went into the half with a 14-0 advantage.

To start the second half, Pyron showed out for the Red Devils. He had several runs before driving in another touchdown with 2:08 remaining in the third.

The kick by Dalton was good, padding the Red Devil lead to 21-0.

After a Geraldine turnover, Fyffe etched their victory in stone with a 20-yard touchdown, early in the fourth quarter, by Ike Rowell. The kick was good, making the final score of the night 28-0.

Friday night, both teams will travel to start region play. Fyffe (1-0) will travel to take on Section (0-1) while Geraldine (1-1) will travel to take on Plainview (1-1).

team win against a good Scottsboro team,� said Fort Payne Head Coach Chris Elmore. “[Our] defense played great all night. Our special teams controlled field position the entire game, and our offensive skill players were able to make big plays because of how our offensive line blocked.�

COLLINSVILLE, Ala. — The Collinsville Panthers defeated the Crossville Lions 40-13 on Friday.

Crossville struck early, with 8:35 remaining in the first, with a 52-yard touchdown by Trace Allen. The 2-point conversion was stopped by the Panthers, giving the Lions the 6-0 advantage. Collinsville answered back with 7:13 remaining in the first

quarter, with a 45 yard quarterback keeper by Kaleb Jones. The kick by Jason Perez was good, giving the Panthers the 7-6 lead. Collinsville never looked back.

In the second quarter, with 11:52 remaining, Perez kicked a 48 yard field goal.

Collinsville went up 10-6.

Dalton Hughes scored on a 10-yard stampede down the field. The kick

by Perez, padded the Panthers lead 17-6. To close out the first half for the Panthers, Jones made a 58-yard

connection to Garrett Skelton, for the score.

The kick by Perez was good and the Panthers went into the half with the 24-6 advantage.

The third quarter saw the Panthers scoring on a 52-yard run by Michael Tucker, a safety after a high snap on Crossville punt, and a 2-yard pass from Jones to Carmen Barkley giving Collinsville the 40-6 lead.

With 0:37 remaining in the game, Crossville scored on a 7-yard run by Noah Williams. The extra

point attempt was good, making the final score of the game, 40-13.

Kaleb Jones completed 5-of-8 passes for a total of 98 yards and two touchdowns for the night.

Kolby Lesley led the Lions with 16 carries for 75 yards.

Both teams will begin region play this week. Collinsville (2-0) will travel to face the North Sand Mountain Bisons. Crossville (0-2) will travel to face the Etowah Blue Devils.

TIGERS DEFEAT THE WARRIORS

VALLEY HEAD, Ala. — The Valley Head Tigers defeated the Alabama School for the Deaf, 45-8, in their season opener on Friday night.

The Tigers put on nineteen unanswered points in the first quarter. With 10:24 remaining in the first quarter, Jordan Burt galloped in thirteen yards for the score. The point after attempt by Marlon Trinidad was good, giving the Tigers the 7-0 lead. With 6:49 remaining in the first, Bryson Morgan brought it in from 10 yards. The PAT by Trinidad was blocked, making the score 13-0. With 2:10 remaining in the opening quarter, Burt scores again with a 4-yard gallop into the endzone. The point after attempt failed.

Jordan Burt scored two touchdowns in the second quarter to add to the Valley Head lead. With 6:10 remaining in the first half, Burt brought one in from 7 yards. The PAT failed. With 2:02 remaining in

the second quarter, Burt stampeded in from 61 yards.

The kick by Trinidad was good, giving the Tigers the 32-0 lead going into the half.

To start the second half off, the Tigers scored on a 6-yard touchdown by Marlon Trinidad. The kick by Trinidad was good, padding the Valley Head lead to 39-0. With 5:24 remaining in the third, Waylon Collins brought one in from 5-yards out. The point after attempt failed, giving the Tigers the 45-0 advantage. With 2:18 remaining in the third quarter, the Silent Warriors scored the final points of the night with a 68-yard run by Cory McKinnoe. The Warriors successfully went for two, making the final score of the game, 45-8.

Jordan Burt led the Valley Head Tigers with 127 yards on eight carries and four touchdowns.

Valley Head (1-0) will travel to take on Decatur Heritage Christian Academy(1-0) in region play on Friday.
