Local prayer meeting to DA Announces Two New Victims Service Officers support pro-life on National Day of Mourning By Staff Reports
DeKALB COUNTY, Ala. — District Attorney Mike
By Staff Reports DeKALB COUNTY, Ala. — On Saturday, February 23, DeKalb County pastors and congregants from across the county are invited to show support of the National Day of Mourning that will be observed in Albany, N.Y. The national movement is in response to recent New York legislation regarding late-term abortions. Beginning at 10am on Saturday, February 23 at the Church of God in Rainsville (155 Main Street West), residents will come together to pray. Prayer will be offered to God in repentance and to ask God to use His power to change hearts and minds. The atmosphere will be marked not by angry confrontation but by love and mercy. The organizers desire to provide an arean for local Christians to make their voices known. For more information, please contact Rev. Wayne Hrenyk at (256) 717-5040 or Katie Gillis at (256) 996-0569.
O’Dell announced today the hiring of two new Victims Service Officers for the Ninth Circuit. “We have been very blessed to be able to add two full-time Victim Service Officers to our office staff,” O’Dell stated. “We are now able to assign one to each county, (Dekalb and Cherokee), in order to be able to serve the needs of each particular county. I am very excited that we will, finally, be able to provide a full range of victims’ services to our communities.” The hiring comes as a result of a $6.3 million dollar state grant announced by Governor Kay Ivey in December, 2018. This grant allows Alabama District Attorneys to hire 88 Certified Victim Service Officers across the state. The grant was made possible by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs. Each of the 88 VSOs will work directly out of the local District Attorney’s Offices. “The criminal justice system can seem intimidating to people who have been victims of crime,” Governor Kay Ivey said in announcing the grant. “I am pleased to support this program, which will provide knowledgeable professionals to help crime victims understand the court process and ensure that
Abbey Dawson (left) will join the DA's Cherokee Office. Sherri Stewart (Right) will join the DeKalb Office. (Submitted Photos) victims are aware of other community resources that may further assist them.” “This grant is a major benefit for victims, victims’ families and district attorneys across Alabama,” O’Dell stated. “With budget reductions over the past ten years we have seen layoffs in personnel and a loss in financial resources available for victim services. Thus, the need to provide essential services to our victims has not been met like I would have hoped and wanted. The previous VSO position was primarily a ‘part-time’ position being an add-on responsibility to an already overworked staff member. Additionally, these employees had little, if any, training in providing these services. This grant provides much needed training and equipment to help facilitate the carrying-out of the VSO responsibilities.” “In most DA Offices across the state money for victim assistance has been especially tight, and helping victims has taken a back seat to the prosecution process,”
O’Dell pointed out. “We have all regretted this situation, and we joined forces with ADECA and the Governor’s Office to successfully resolve this inadequacy. We identified providing more direct and effective services to victims as a priority in our offices. This grant is a real game-changer for DAs across the state. Now, many more victims of crime and their families will have someone in the DA’s Office to both comfort them and assist them through the process of obtaining justice. I am extremely grateful to Governor Ivey, ADECA, and the District Attorneys Association for assisting in making this grant possible.” O’Dell explained that these new VSO employees will be Certified Victim Service Officers meaning that they have received intensive initial training in providing these services, enabling them to work directly with victims of crime and their families in cases such as homicides, rapes, assaults, child abuse, robbery, domestic violence, and property crimes. They
have been trained, and will continue to receive on-going training, in assisting victims in acquiring counseling, provide information about their rights and resources, communicate with and comfort victims, and assist them through the often difficult judicial process. “No one chooses to be a victim of crime,” O’Dell pointed out. “Through criminal and often violent acts of others, victims are forced into a vast and intimidating criminal justice system. District Attorneys, though challenged by meager resources, have long tried to do the best they could. With tens of thousands of felonies a year, it has proven daunting. An increase in violent crimes in recent years has meant there is an increased need for victim assistance.” “This groundbreaking partnership with the Governor, ADECA, and the District Attorneys across Alabama is a model for the nation,” O’Dell stated. “My hope and prayer is that, with the efforts of our new Certified VSOs, we will be able to ease the pain and anxiety caused by crime, while providing needed comfort, information and guidance to victims as they navigate through the criminal justice system.” The two new Certified Victim Service Officers are Abbey Dawson (Cherokee Office) and Sherri Stewart (Dekalb Office).

NACC NAMED MILITARY FRIENDLY FOR 2019
By Staff Reports
DeKALB COUNTY, Ala. — Northeast Alabama Community College has once again been included in the annual list of the Nation's Top Military Friendly ® Schools. "We are very pleased to be designated as a military friendly school," said Dr. David Campbell, NACC President. "Military personnel have served and sacrificed for our country. We want to honor their service by doing whatever we can for them in pursuing their education goals." For the tenth year in a row, VIQTORY's Military Friendly ® Schools list has come to set the standard for higher education institutions to provide the best opportunities for veterans and their spouses. This prestigious list provides a comprehensive guide for veterans and their families using data sources from federal agencies and proprietary survey information from participating organizations. Institutions that earn the designation of being a Military Friendly ® School were evaluated using both public data sources and responses from a
propietary survey completed by the school. This year, 766 schools earned this prestigious designation. Thelist provides a comprehensive guide for veterans and their families using data sources from federal agencies and proprietary survey information from participating organizations. Northeast has a VA Education Success Center in Room 104 of the Wallace Administration Building. "It is a designated area for our VA students to utilize computers and
printers for any of their educational needs," said Jennifer Brown, Financial Aid Assistant who assists veterans. "We also have CAC card readers available for our military students." For more information about veterans' benefits and financial aid, contact Brown via phone at (256) 228-6001 or (256)638-4418 ext. 2275 or by email at brownj@nacc.edu. POLITICS
INSIDE THE STATEHOUSE Alabama Leads the Way with Women in Governmental Leadership
By Steve Flowers AL Political Columnist MONTGOMERY, Ala. — There has been a lot of talk about the advancement of women in politics over the past year. It has been suggested that more progressive states have led the way with this change. Alabama can very well make the case that we lead the nation in women taking leadership roles in our state. It is very doubtful that any state in the nation can claim a female governor and a female chief executive of their states leading business organization. Kay Ivey became Governor on January 14, after having been elected to her own four-year term in November. Kay had previously been the State Treasurer for eight-years and Lt. Governor for six-years. She was serving an unexpired term as Governor for two-years prior to her election last
year. On January 2, Katie Boyd Britt took over the reins of the state’s most powerful political organization, the Business Council of Alabama. She is the first woman to serve as the BCA’s President and Chief Executive Officer. She is not only the first woman CEO, she is by far the youngest CEO in BCA history. Katie Britt comes to the BCA from Senator Richard Shelby’s office where she has been our Senior Senator’s Chief of Staff. Alabama Power CEO, Mark Crosswhite, who chairs the BCA’s Executive Committee said, “As the top staff member for Senator Shelby, she has worked daily with businesses and elected officials from Alabama and the country. Katie has always been a bright star on the Alabama political stage. She grew up in Enterprise and served as President of the Student Government

Association at the University of Alabama then graduated from the University of Alabama School of Law. Before becoming Chief of Staff, she worked in several posts in Senator Shelby’s office including Press Secretary. She is married to Wesley Britt, a former Alabama and professional football player and they have two children. As Senator Shelby’s top advisor for the last five years, she has headed his Judicial Nomination Task Force. She has spearheaded the effort to recommend young talent for the eight vacancies serving Alabama on the Federal Circuit and District Court Benches. As the Senator’s Chief of Staff, Katie has managed all of Shelby’s DC and state operations including matters relating to personnel throughout his six offices. She has overseen an administrative annual budget of almost $4 million. In addition, as Chief of Staff, she has been our Senior Senator’s ambassador before constituents’ community leaders, industry association heads and senior executives across our state and nation.
Upon taking the BCA reins, Katie said, “My heart is in Alabama. Our state has made significant progress in recent years and I am honored to have been chosen to lead the BCA during this time of growth.” Kay and Katie are not the only female governmental leaders. Twinkle Cavanaugh serves as President of the Alabama Public Service Commission. She has been a state leader for decades. She is a past Chairman of the State Republican Party. Our seven-member congressional delegation boasts of two female delegates to Congress. Given the fact that we only have seven congressional seats, two out of seven is a pretty good percentage. Congresswoman Terri Sewell has represented the Seventh District of Alabama for close to a decade. She is on a fast leadership track in the Democratic House caucus. She is a Harvard educated lawyer who was born and raised in Selma. Her sprawling district, includes Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Montgomery and all of the Black Belt. Congresswoman
Martha Roby has represented southeast Alabama’s second district for close to a decade. She is also on a fast track within her party ranks. She is a favorite among the House Republican leadership. Therefore, folks, Alabama does not take a backseat to any state when it comes to females in leadership roles in government. Gov. Kay Ivey came out strongly in favor of a gasoline tax to meet the state’s infrastructure needs in her Inaugural Address. If successful, she
will not only go down in history as the first female Republican governor and first female governor elected in her own right, she will also leave a legacy of improving Alabama economically for decades to come. See you next week. Steve Flowers is Alabama’s leading political columnist. His column appears in more than 60 Alabama newspapers. He served 16 years in the state legislature.
