By Marla Jones Managing Editor DeKALB COUNTY, Ala. — The search for missing 18-year old, Koy Spears was suspended on Saturday due to weather. Officials were looking for him in a water rescue at Bucks Pocket State Park. Two other teenagers were rescued as they were clinging onto a tree, calling for help after the Jeep they were in, was swept off the bridge into the South Sauty Creek. Helicopters, drones and rescue teams began the search around 8 p.m. Friday night. The name of the other two teenagers have not been released and this is an ongoing investigation. As the waters recede, the investigation has now become a recovery mission. Southern Torch will continue to update as more details are made available.

FLOODING CAUSES ROAD CLOSURES By Marla Jones Managing Editor

After recent flooding, several roads across DeKalb County have been damaged including Old Highway 35 in Fort Payne/Pine Ridge. (Photo by Ben Luther)

FORT PAYNE, Ala. — Several DeKalb County roads have been impacted and forcibly closed due to the large amount of rainfall we accumulated in the last week. According to County Engineer Ben Luther, County Road 835, also

known as Old Highway 35, will be closed for a minimum of several months. Luther said that the reports stating that a gas leak caused the closure were incorrect. Luther stated that the sliding of the road did cause a pipe to leak, but was not the initial reason that CR835 closed. The County Engineer's Department is

set to get together with all local utilities that are involved to come up with a plan of action next week. The DeKalb County Emergency Agency also reported that Tutwiler Gap, County Road 604 (Wade's Gap) and several bridges (County Road 39, 386) were closed. Damage will be assessed once the water has receded.

BYRNE ANNOUNCES RUN FOR U.S. SENATE STATE OF THE CITY

By Zach Hester Reporter

MOBILE, Ala. — Last week, U.S. Rep. Bradley Byrne officially entered the 2020 race for U.S. Senate against incumbent Democrat Doug Jones. Senator Jones has already declared his intentions to seek a first full-term in the Senate. Byrne, who has represented Alabama’s 1st congressional district since 2014, announces his intentions on Wednesday, February 20 during a live event in Mobile. Prior to his

service in the U.S. House of Representatives, Byrne was Chancellor of Alabama’s Department of Postsecondary Education, a member of the Alabama State Board of Education and a member of the Alabama State Senate. He is the first Republican to officially enter the race for the seat. As U.S. Senator, Byrne promises to stand on conservative principles. For more information on the issues that Rep. Byrne stands for, visit his website at bradleybyrne. com.

As Democrats hope to flip control of the Senate in 2020, plenty of national attention will be focused on what is

expected to be a tough race in Alabama. In the 2017 special election when Jones won over Republican Roy Moore, it was estimated that more than $50 million was spent during the race. “Senator Jones simply doesn’t match up with the people of the state of Alabama,” Byrne said in an interview to NBC15 in Mobile. “The people of Alabama are going to reject him in 2020.” Southern Torch will continue to update on the state of the race as we head into the 2020 election season.
