WELCOME
TO THE
BANGALOW MUSIC FESTIVAL
This year the Bangalow Music Festival celebrates its 15th year as one of Australia’s leading chamber music festivals. The festival also happens to coincide with the Rio Olympic games, which made me start thinking about what the Olympics represent: a celebration of outstanding feats of human achievement. From running 100m to pole vaulting 6 metres into the air, to the grace and agility of elegant gymnasts and the amazing stories of the athletes’ journeys and struggles along the way, the Olympics are a celebration of humans overcoming obstacles and achieving the impossible. In music, we also have similar stories of musicians and composers overcoming physical and mental challenges, pushing technical boundaries and personal limitations, and surviving social and financial struggles in order to reach towards achieving perfection in our art form.

AUGUST 12 - 14 2016
When you think of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, which was considered unplayable for years after it was first written, the impudent genius of Mozart and the raw emotional angst of Mahler, you can see that these artists were the core protagonists who propelled the evolution of classical music through the centuries to reach unattainable heights. Our 15th Bangalow Music Festival will explore and celebrate these outstanding human achievements and rejoice in the sumptuous beauty that classical music has inspired in the human spirit over the last 400 years. I look forward to seeing you there,
Tania Frazer Creative Director

LEGACY
Sunday 14 August, 3pm A&I Hall, Bangalow
Little did anyone know that when these pieces were first written, they would create a great legacy that would propel musicians to reach heights never imagined. Oboist LÊon Goossens and Vaughan Williams challenged the perception of the oboe as a solo instrument, while Tchaikovsky’s great violin concerto changed the accepted limitations of violin playing, leaving a powerful legacy that has stood the test of time.
