Baby Isabelle, who had a heart transplant, and her family

Trusted Care for Tiny Hearts When Isabelle was born with just half a heart and not doing well, her doctors and parents turned to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Heart Institute. “Isabelle was transferred from North Florida and lived under our care until a heart was found,” said Frank Scholl, MD, Surgical Director, Heart Transplant and Heart Failure Program. “Then, in a complicated operation, we reconstructed a place for her new heart,” Dr. Scholl added. “The procedure was a great success, and that’s an amazing feeling.” “We do whatever we need to do to help these kids,” said Maryanne Chrisant, MD, Medical Director, Cardiac Transplant, Heart Failure and Cardiomyopathy. “Our results are terrific, and the quality of what we can do is known nationwide.” “Isabelle is doing good. We thank our nurses, doctors and everyone at Joe DiMaggio,” said Frances, Isabelle’s mom.

“Delivering Miracles Again and Again.” Pregnancy was never easy for Lisa and her husband. When it was time to deliver her fourth baby, Lisa did not hesitate to return to the hospital where their three other children were born: The Maternity Place at Broward Health Coral Springs.

“I have a special place in my heart for every medical professional who cared for me during my deliveries. I would describe my births as intense, but peaceful. The hospital’s atmosphere, the team’s medical expertise, and the overall safe feeling really contributed to my peace of mind.” - Lisa, Proud mom of four (Coconut Creek resident) The Maternity Place, part of the new $65 million patient tower at Broward Health Coral Springs, offers a modern, upscale and comfortable environment. • Dedicated private entrance for expectant moms • Private spa-like suites with personal bathrooms • 10 Private Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) rooms • Maternity and childbirth classes

multiple CHOICES SELECTING THE RIGHT KIND OF SCHOOL FOR YOUR KIDS

B Y TA N N I H A A S , P H . D .

Parents who are looking for the right school for their kids can be forgiven if they’re confused. There are many different kinds of schools, and it can be difficult to tell the difference between them. Following is an overview of the most common school choices, so parents can make informed decisions that best serve their needs.

| southfloridafamilylife.com

Charter Schools

Charter schools are a specific kind of public school. Like regular public schools, they receive public funding. However, they’re independently operated and have more autonomy than most public schools when it comes to curriculum and instruction. They tend to have a specific educational focus, such as performing arts or math and science. Students are often selected through a lottery rather than on their academic merit or other factors like demographics.

Distance-learning Schools

Distance-learning schools, also known as online or virtual schools, are schools where students receive instruction from home, similar to what’s happening during the pandemic but on a permanent basis. They can be public or private, and they often abide by the same educational regulations and standards as brick-and-mortar schools. Parents often choose distance-learning schools because they like their convenience and flexibility. Learn more about Florida’s programs, FLVS Flex and FLVS Global School, at www.flvs.net.

District-zoned Schools

District-zoned schools, or neighborhood schools, are the regular public schools in your area. These are publicly funded, follow state guidelines for curriculum and instruction, and are open to all kids living within their catchment area (or zone). Most parents send their kids to district-zoned schools because they’re conveniently located, and their kids are almost guaranteed to have their neighborhood friends as classmates. Visit www.browardschools.com and www.palmbeachschools.org for details.

Faith-based Schools

Faith-based schools are private schools that operate under local parish churches or temples. These schools teach regular academic subjects like language arts, math, science and social studies in addition to offering religious instruction and prayer services. Parents often choose a faith-based school because they want their kids’ education to be grounded in particular religious values.

International Baccalaureate Schools

International baccalaureate schools are schools that are members of the International Baccalaureate Association, an international educational foundation founded in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1968. They include both private and public elementary, middle and high schools. Students who graduate from these academically-rigorous high school programs are highly competitive when they apply for admission to colleges and universities around the world. Some private schools and select public schools in Broward and Palm Beach counties have IB programs at the elementary, middle and high school level. Check www.flibs.org for a complete list.

Language Immersion Schools

Language immersion schools are private and public schools in which all or most of the instruction is delivered in a language other than English. The teachers are often fluent in two or more

languages. The educational programs are typically designed for students whose native language is English, and they’re great if you want your kids to become fluent in another language. Common languages of instruction include Chinese, French, Japanese and Spanish.

Magnet Schools

Magnet schools are public schools with magnet programs that are open to kids throughout the school districts. Like charter schools, they operate alongside regular public schools, have a particular educational focus, and their instruction often emphasizes hands-on learning. Unlike charter schools, however, magnet schools usually don’t admit students via a lottery and they factor in the academic merit of students. Learn more on your school district website.

Montessori Schools

Montessori schools are private and public schools that follow the educational philosophy of the Italian physician Maria Montessori who promoted a child-centered approach that includes lots of hands-on exploration. Instead of a one-size-fits-all curriculum, Montessori schools appeal to each individual student’s interests and abilities. Another feature that distinguishes Montessori schools from traditional schools is that teachers stay with the same group of students for several years. Learn more at www.montessoripublic.org/florida.

Reggio Emilia Schools

Reggio Emilia schools are private schools that follow a specific educational philosophy that was developed by parents living in the Italian city of Reggio Emilia in the 1940s. These schools assume that kids form their own personality and therefore have a student-centered curriculum that includes experiential learning, play and self-expression. Teachers focus on the interests of individual students, ask lots of questions and engage in activities alongside their students. Learn more at www.reggioalliance.org/schools.

Special Education Schools

Special education schools are private and public schools that serve students with special needs. Some focus on multiple needs, others on specific learning differences. These can include communicative, physical and social learning differences such as ADHD, autism and hearing impairment. Teachers are educated to meet the specialized learning needs of students. They often have an extensive support staff of guidance counselors, psychologists and social workers.

Waldorf Schools

Waldorf schools, also known as Steiner schools, are private schools that follow the educational philosophy of Rudolf Steiner, an Austrian philosopher and social reformer who promoted a specific kind of holistic learning that emphasizes practical skills, imagination and intellectual development. Like Montessori schools, teachers stay with the same group of students for several years to foster a close and intimate mentor-mentee relationship. Learn more at www.waldorfschoolpalmbeach.org.

SCHOOL

T

he face of education in South Florida is changing rapidly, especially with the pandemic pushing schooling online. Parents interested in finding education alternatives for their

children outside of the local school district may want to consider a faith-based or private school to meet their children’s needs. Charter schools also offer alternatives to a district-school experience, and families may opt for tutoring to supplement their children’s schooling. A number of factors go into choosing a school or tutor, such as desired teaching style, enrollment, budget and culture. The following directory is designed to help parents of K to 12 students make those choices. Families should contact the schools and agencies directly to learn more about what they offer. Parents are also encouraged to take a virtual tour and speak to other families about their experience to find the best fit for their children. 8

Setting Up SCREEN TIME 7 TIPS FOR ES T FOR KIDS IN ABLISHING SCREEN RULE THE AGE OF C S ORONAVIRUS By Michael R obb

O

ur lives have changed drastically in the past year. For parents like me (I have a 5-year-old and a 7-year-old) — who are assuming multiple roles as caregivers, teachers, and playmates — the same questions are on repeat: What in the world am I going to do with my kids all day from now until who knows when? And… how many movies is it OK for them to watch in one day? Parents tend to think of screen use guidelines as a daily maximum amount that’s acceptable. But if you look closely at popular recommendations, such as the ones from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the message — even before the coronavirus pandemic — is much more nuanced and much less focused on time. For a while now, media researchers have been advocating for a shift from screen quantity to content quality. If kids are engaged with high-quality content that stokes curiosity and fuels imagination, who’s to say that should end when they’ve hit their screen limit? Research has also uncovered the importance of kids’ experience with media, based on who uses media with kids (siblings? parents?), the purpose of the content (school? entertainment?), and who’s talking with kids about what they’re watching (Daniel Tiger and Tiger King both make for great mealtime conversation). In other words: Context matters, too. Key to this nuance is understanding that all screens are not equal. We shouldn’t act as though one hour of old DuckTales cartoons is the same as one hour of Zooming with a family member, or one hour of playing Fortnite with a friend, or one hour of drawing tutorials on YouTube. What a kid gets out of each is totally different and satisfies different needs — and that’s OK. One of the things the current crisis has really brought home is how unbelievably social kids are and want to be. In some ways, our adaptations to staying at home have made us use technology in ways that are great for children: in service of relationships. Kids may be watching more Netflix and playing more video games than usual. But they’re also videochatting more, playing games with

schoolmates and even enjoying online playdates. Though nothing will ever replace in-person interaction for children, using tech to strengthen relationships is more important than ever. With that in mind, here are some recommendations when it comes to using screens during this time: • Don’t feel guilty. We are living through a massive cultural shock. Families have enough stress to deal with, and counting screen minutes should be very low on the list of concerns for any of us. • Not all screens are created equal. Worried that the online classroom is adding to your kid’s screen time? Don’t be. Screen activities shouldn’t be lumped together. Some are educational; some are just for fun. Some are high-quality; some are a guilty pleasure. What we do on screens and how we do it is more important than time spent. • Good content is key. Choose age-appropriate, high-quality media and tech for your kids. Visit www.commonsensemedia.org to find good content. • Get creative. Let kids use your phone to shoot photos and videos and then go to town with stickers, slo-mo, and other editing tools. Give them a prompt like, “Take 10 pictures of something round, and then write a story connecting each thing.” Have them make their own memes, record a song, choreograph a dance video — anything that gets them using screens to fulfill their imaginations. • Use tech to bond. Relationships are critical to kids’ healthy development. Tech can and should help kids connect to friends and family, collaborate with each other, play, and share stories, pictures and videos. • Talk about it. We’re in a unique position where kids are likely using screens more, and we may have more opportunities to join them — or at least engage with them about what they’re watching and playing. Ask questions about their favorite games, shows and characters. Discuss ideas and issues they read about or learn about through a TV show or a game. This is an opportunity for learning about each other and sharing your values. • Balance still matters. We should aim for a balance throughout the week. So, more screens? Fine. But also find time to be outside, to be active (indoors or outdoors, with or without screens), eat well, and talk to friends and family (on the phone, on social media or on video chat). The time at home with kids presents an opportunity to bond with them, even over media. This is not the time to try to deprive kids of something they enjoy and something that research has shown to have positive effects when used appropriately. There’s a ton of great high-quality content out there — let your kids use it, use it with them, and don’t guilt yourself over something that can still be part of a healthy, balanced childhood — especially during these times of heightened stress.
