Da’realis, who had a genetic condition and heart failure

Trust the Heart Care Experts Da’realis had been in and out of hospitals for years, and answers were few. So his West Palm Beach family came to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, a nationally recognized leader in children’s heart care. Our pediatric experts found he had both a rare neuromuscular condition and severe heart failure. Our team implanted a HeartMate3 left ventricular assist device (LVAD) — the first for a teenager in Florida. Today, Da’realis is home and getting back to the things he enjoys. Our expertise is why other hospitals send their most complex cases to us. And why South Florida families trust our family to care for them.

Immersing our kids in nature offers a bounty of benefits BY SANDI SCHWARTZ

ave you ever gone on a walk just to clear your mind or taken a “mental health day” from your job to visit the beach, woods, mountains or even a local park? What we all suspected intuitively, science has confirmed: spending time connecting to nature is a safe, effective tool to help minimize the effects of stress and boost mood. It also reduces our response to stress and allows us to recover from tense situations more quickly. Additionally, nature has been shown to improve focus and attention; lower the production of stress hormones like cortisol; and reduce stress-related physical symptoms like high blood pressure, increased heart rate and muscle tension. A growing number of studies over the past few decades from around the world have shown the importance of

nature in improving our family’s health and happiness. Examples cover a broad scope, including recreation activities in the wilderness, community gardens, nature art, views of nature, outdoor exercise, nature-related mindfulness and meditation, and contact with animals.

WHY NATURE IS HEALING Nature offers a soothing sensory experience like none other. Listening to birds chirping, breathing in the moist air after a rainstorm and walking barefoot on the warm sand are natural treasures that help improve our mood. Studies show that viewing natural scenery like flowers, green plants and woods leads to more relaxed feelings than looking at images with no nature at all. Colors, continued on page 12

10 Activities to Enjoy as a Family South Florida mom and author Sandi Schwartz is passionate about nature and the environment. In her recently published book, Finding Ecohappiness: Fun Nature Activities to Help Your Kids Feel Happier and Calmer, she shares many fun, hands-on, nature-loving activities for families to enjoy together. Filled with colorful images and activity checklists, the book is the first to offer a comprehensive toolkit of naturebased stress reduction tools for families with school-aged children. Topics addressed include awe and gratitude, mindfulness, creative arts, outdoor play, travel and adventure, volunteering, food and animals. Here is a sampling of activities for you to try with your kids:

1

Visit nature-filled spots that will help your children be more mindful, such as forests, hiking trails, beaches, waterfalls and botanical gardens.

2

Test out a variety of natural scents by either purchasing essential oils, sprays, and other products or searching for the scents outside in your neighborhood or at a local park.

3

Stock up on essential nature play tools like shovels, rakes, hoes, buckets, collection boxes, binoculars, a compass, a magnifying glass, a flashlight, tweezers, bug cages and nets.

4 5 6

Go on a family nature walk or look for a StoryWalk program in your community.

Try new types of green exercise as a family, such as orienteering, paddle boarding and mountain biking. Go for a walk and ask your children to point out beautiful nature scenes. Take pictures during your adventure and then have your kids either draw or paint what they saw or put together a collage of the photos.

7 8

Take art projects, like sidewalk chalk, outdoors or bring an easel out in your backyard or on the balcony so they can paint. Take your children birdwatching or sign them up for a children’s birdwatching club near you. You can find birds at public gardens, nature centers, local parks and zoos; near bodies of water like lakes, rivers and oceans; and even in your own backyard.

9

Start a family garden in your backyard. If you do not have the space for a garden, consider starting slow by growing a few herbs on your windowsill or one vegetable at a time in a large flowerpot.

10

Visit a u-pick farm or shop at a farmer’s market for fresh produce.

patterns, textures, scents and sounds are the primary ways we can experience nature through our senses. The most calming colors stem from nature. Creams, tans, pale blues and pale greens help create a quiet atmosphere. According to color psychology experts, blue calms the mind and body, lowering blood pressure, heart rate and respiration. It also minimizes feelings of anxiety and aggression and creates a sense of well-being. Interestingly enough, blue is overwhelmingly chosen as a favorite color by people around the world. The color green promotes a serene and calming environment and is associated with health, healing and well-being; soothes the body and mind; and reduces anxiety. Neutral colors — tan, beige, ecru, cream, light brown, taupe and gray — manifest an organic, earthy feeling. We can bring the benefits of nature’s calming colors inside by using more natural hues when decorating our homes. Try using cool colors like blues and greens when choosing décor for your children’s bedrooms since their calming effect help make the room feel spacious and relaxing, like the blue sky or ocean.

Nature provides extraordinary wellness benefits. We can connect to nature in so many ways from mindfulness to outdoor exercise to visiting nature centers. A recent groundbreaking study published in Scientific Reports found that spending at least 120 minutes a week in nature is associated with good health and well-being. That’s only about 20 minutes a day. Not sure how to build a nature habit for your family? The best approach is to start with what they already love and go from there to incorporate more nature into their daily lives. If they are artistic, consider nature-related art projects since nature is filled with so much beauty to spark creativity in our kids. Ideas include nature photography, drawing and painting nature scenes, writing nature poetry, keeping a nature journal and making up nature songs and dances. They can also engage in a variety of nature art projects using natural items, such as grass weaving, making shell necklaces, collages,

mindful rock painting and creating nature mandalas or sculptures. If they are athletic, sign them up for green exercise, which refers to any activity in which we interact with nature while moving our bodies and breaking a sweat. Some ideas include hiking, swimming, biking, running and outdoor team sports. You can also get creative with an obstacle course in your backyard. You can set it up yourself or have your kids do it. Go through your house and garage and gather a variety of fitness equipment. Put together several stations for different activities, such as a jump rope, cones to weave around, a box to jump over and a basketball net to shoot a ball into. You can also have some stations that do not require equipment; for example, they can do jumping jacks, push-ups or hop on one foot. If they are adventurous, carve out some time after school, on the weekends and during school breaks to get away to places where your kids can go exploring outside and try new things. Some ideas for adventures include camping, boating, kayaking, river rafting, caving, mountain biking, rock climbing, ziplining, geocaching, skiing, surfing and doing a ropes course. If they love math and science, get them involved in nature-related science projects. One example is citizen science, which involves volunteering to collect scientific data. It is a way for children to gain science experience and help the scientific community while spending time outdoors in nature. There are citizen science opportunities for kids of all ages and levels. Your family can get involved from your own backyard or through a more organized group like a school nature or science club. Check out www.CitizenScience.gov, SciStarter, and Zooniverse to find citizen science projects. The options are truly endless to build a nature habit that your family will love and benefit from. Just keep challenging yourselves to do more, go a little bit deeper and experience something out of the ordinary. Try new nature activities, visit different places you have never explored and experiment with what brings the most joy and calm to your family. Share your experiences and the tremendous benefits of nature with friends and family so they can benefit as well.

WORDS of wisdom

The Fast and the Fearful TEEN DRIVING CAN BE A BUMPY RIDE BY CHERYL MAGUIRE

B

efore you become a parent you hear all about (or witness first-hand) the horror stories of the terrible-two tantrums in the middle of Target. Or the endless potty-training tales that cause your face to grimace and emit sounds like eeewww. But what no one warns you about is having to sit in the passenger seat while your newly permitted teen driver goes from zero to sixty faster than when they hurled their poopy diaper like an Olympian shot-put athlete. I suppose it makes sense though. I mean the human race would cease to exist if people knew that one day, they would be required to allow their child to operate a four thousand pound moving vehicle while they sat next to them bracing for an impending impact, gripping the sides of their seat as if their life depended on it (because it does). I totally get it. These stories need to remain clandestine. So instead of sharing my woes of teaching my twin teens to drive, I’ll share some signs that should be conveniently placed next to actual road signs — for all those parents like me that need some support along with a paper bag to control their hyperventilation. STOP Slamming on Your Imaginary Brake. It would have been really helpful if I saw this sign at least once when I was teaching my twin teens to drive. Because now I need to replace the car floor mat. The habitual motion of my foot pressing down has worn away the fabric rendering the mat useless like my imaginary brake. At the very least, seeing this sign could have saved me $20. But then when you add in the visit to the doctor for the foot sprain, the costs start to add up and don’t even get me started on the pain factor. I’m just saying — this sign could save lives or at least some feet and floor mats. DANGER You Are Going to Pass Out If You Don’t Breathe. I get it. Your body has transitioned into survival mode — you know that whole flight or fight response thing you learned in high school. You want to “flight” right out of that car, but you are strapped in with a seat belt and let’s face it, you have zero control over what will happen next. All you see is that the sidewalk is way too close to the car and you know that you are in the “death seat,” which for the

38

first time in your life you are truly understanding why it is referred to with this lovely title. But, it’s really important to breathe because if you pass out your teen driver will definitely be distracted and end up crashing. SPEED LIMIT Is Way Too High. I’m not sure if my twin teens have watched too many high-speed chase movies or played too many video games like Mario Kart or Rocket League, but both of them feel the need to go from 0 to 60 in less than two seconds. I’m going to have to find some more calming activities for them like reading, yoga, or better yet, they can buy me a spa gift certificate to help calm me down. U-TURN It’s Okay to Go Home. If you survived more than five minutes in the passenger seat, it’s okay to call it a day and go home. Most roller coaster rides are only five minutes because the people that created them know that if it were any longer you would probably die of a heart attack or stroke from pure fear. Those rollercoasters also have safety harnesses and all sorts of other safety measures. But you are at the mercy of your teen driver who can’t seem to figure out how to hang up the wet towel that they leave on the floor, and now you are expected to trust that they will stop in time to not hit that pedestrian. I’m just not buying it — are you? I know I said that these stories should remain secret, so all of the above mentioned is merely hypothetical — I swear.
