Coming later in the year is Michael Morpurgo’s Warhorse. Keep an eye on the SHP website for more details www.southhillpark.org.uk/cinema Further phases of our digitisation project will see additionally improved sound systems including provision to assist the hearing-impaired, and installation of 3D technology to bring another dimension to your cinema experience.

Si
Dir. Woody Allen, US, 2013 98 mins Cate Blanchett, Peter Sarsgaard, Alec Baldwin
A New York socialite deeply troubled and in denial, arrives in San Francisco to impose upon her sister. Blanchett’s exhausting, exhilarating performance is like watching a great opera diva dive into a classic role. Wielding a sense of entitlement as boundless as it is unjustified, Jasmine is an insufferable, condescending, unintentionally funny woman; yet by the end of the film, she will have you in tears. It’s a magical performance by Blanchett and a fine return to form for Allen.

Dir. Paul Feig, US, 2013, 117 mins Sandra Bullock, Melissa McCarthy, Marlon Wayans, Demian Bichir
An enterprising Saudi girl enters her school’s Qur’an recitation competition so she can buy a bicycle. The first feature film to be filmed in Saudi Arabia by a woman and one of few films to emerge from the country at all. Director Haifaa Al-Mansour makes forceful points about her country’s gender politics within a story that’s light and unassuming.
In 1915, Jean Renoir, son of Impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste, returns home to convalesce after being wounded in the war. Onto the scene comes Andrée, a young woman who rejuvenates, enchants, and inspires both father and son. Visually and aurally, a sensory delight.

Only a few years from now, with Earth battered by an invasion of gigantic beasts through a trans-dimensional rift in the Pacific floor, the best brains on the planet have devised huge human-navigated robot sentinels to fight back. But they may not be enough... Blockbuster with superb and plentiful action set-pieces that are thunderous, rain-soaked, and beautifully detailed.

When DJ Alan Partridge’s home radio station is taken over by a new media conglomerate, it sets in motion a chain of events that see Alan working with the police to defuse a potentially violent siege. Steve Coogan’s Alan Partridge remains his awful self in this hilarious, utterly English comedy action picture.

Out in the Dark
Nimr, a Palestinian student and Roy, a young Israeli lawyer, meet in a Tel Aviv gay bar. Their friendship develops despite mounting difficulties. Attitudes in Palestine put Nimr’s life at risk while Roy’s family disapprove of the relationship. Tension builds when the secret services decide to turn the situation to their advantage. Straddling the Israel-Palestine divide, this bittersweet tale benefits from tender, affecting performances, and a director who sensitivity handles both sides of the conflict as pressure steadily builds and the film develops into a gripping thriller. Plus short film Far From Home Dir. Sophie Broadgate, UK, 2011, 10 mins
A post-apocalyptic science fiction drama focused on two brothers who have found a safe place in a bunker. Keswick Film Festival 2012, Golden Osprey Runner Up
An uptight FBI Special Agent is paired with a foul-mouthed Boston cop to take down a ruthless drug lord. An uproarious female buddy cop comedy, McCarthy and Bullock make for an unlikely odd-couple crime-fighting duo, but they’re a riot together. Special event
The Moo Man Thu 14 Nov 7.45pm £8.80, Members & Conc £7.30 Fri 15 Nov 10.30am Dir. Andy Heathcote/Heike Bachelier, UK, 2013, 98 mins
Flying in the face of modern farming methods Stephen Hook raises his small herd of cows on the Pevensey Levels of East Sussex. His labour of love keeps the farm in business, but commercial considerations make his day-to-day work a struggle. Hook puts a human, articulate face on the vexed, and vexing, subject of food production, in a documentary that gradually transcends its subject matter to explore man’s uneasy, unfathomable relationship with the animal kingdom. The Thursday screening will be introduced by the film’s Director, Andy Heathcote, who will host a special Q&A session afterwards.

Having raced together in Formula 3 as youngsters, playboy Brit James Hunt and analytical Austrian Niki Lauda square up against each other in the 1976 Formula 1 World Championship. The tenth race at the Nürburgring in Germany proves critical. With perfect period detail and tautly assembled racing, this re-creation of the uncompromising rivalry between chalk-and-cheese Formula One drivers is a gripping and exciting ride.
Summer in February Mon 18 Nov 7.45pm Dir. Christopher Menaul, UK, 2013, 101 mins Dominic Cooper, Emily Browning, Dan Stevens
Love, liberty and scandal among the wild and bohemian Lamorna Group, part of the Newlyn School of artists that flourished at the beginning of the 20th Century. An intimate, enchanting story played out against the picturesque beauty of the Cornish coast, in the approaching shadow of the First World War.
Easy Money Tue 19 Nov 7.45pm Dir. Daniel Espinosa, Swe, 2010, 124 mins Swedish/Serbian with subtitles Dragomir Mrsic, Joel Kinnaman, Lisa Henni, Matias Varela
A promising economics student with a taste for the high life falls in with a bad lot, including a Serbian with Mafia ties and a Chilean fugitive, to sustain his fast-spiralling lifestyle. A compellingly relentless collision between three characters – we know it’s all going to end in mayhem, but the fun is in getting there as we’re pulled this way and that by real emotions and moral uncertainty.

Dir. Paul Greengrass, US, 2013, 134 mins Tom Hanks, Catherine Keener, Barkhad Abdi, Max Martini
The true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the US-flagged MV Maersk Alabama. Intense drama with Hanks a solid fit for the principled captain who hid his crew from the pirates and subjected himself to an ordeal on a lifeboat at the hands of his captors.
The Great Beauty Tue 26 Nov 7.45pm Dir. Paolo Sorrentino, It/Fr, 2013, 141 mins, Italian with subtitles Toni Servillo, Carlo Verdone, Sabrina Ferilli
After his 65th birthday, an aging intellectual and one-time writer reaches a point in his life when he’s beginning to mourn lost love and missed opportunities. Living a life of decadence in a wonderful and overwhelming Rome he slowly rediscovers beauty under the monotonous, empty shell of a lifetime between sinners. This heady, beautiful film will entrance you. A brilliantly executed, glitteringly hypnotic film GUARDIAN
Thu 28 Nov 7.45pm Bracknell Film Society Dir. Alfred Hitchcock, UK, 1928, 105 mins Betty Balfour, Gordon Harker, Ferdinand Von Alten
Father-daughter tensions arise when a millionaire, suspecting his playgirl daughter’s fiancé is a gold-digger, pretends the family fortune is gone. A bubbly comic parable built around Bafour’s effervescent energy, the film is an early example of Hitchcock’s long-term fascination with the foibles of the filthy rich (that were to him, one suspects, forever strange). Bracknell Film Society is delighted to welcome Jillian Jenkins who will play an improvised piano accompaniment to the film. A restoration by the BFI National Archive in association with STUDIOCANAL Principal restoration funding provided by The Eric Anker-Petersen Charity. We would like to thank the Waitrose Community Matters Scheme for enabling us subsidise the ticket price of this special musical event.

Dir. Scott McGehee/David Siegel, US, 2013, 99 mins Julianne Moore, Steve Coogan, Alexander Skarsgård
In New York City, six-year-old Maisie is caught in the middle of a bitter custody battle between her mother, a party-hardy rock star, and her father, a self-absorbed art dealer. The story is captured through the eyes of their neglected daughter, played superbly by Onata Aprile - a standout in a moving, hard-hitting and surprising adaptation of the Henry James novel. Sensitive and almost unwatchably perceptive about dysfunctional families TIMEOUT

The Artist and the Model Tue 3 Dec 7.45pm Dir. Fernando Trueba, Sp/Fr, 2012, 105 mins, French/Spanish with subtitles Jean Rochefort, Aida Folch, Claudia Cardinale, Chus Lampreave
The Second World War. Marc Cros, an elderly sculptor, lives in virtual exile in the French Pyrenees seeming to have reached the end of his life and his art. A beautiful young Spanish political refugee agrees to pose for Marc, inspiring him to embark on a last artistic (and sensual) adventure. Compelling performances and the film’s unearthly vintage glow allow us to look back wistfully on an art cinema tradition that’s sadly faded from view. A sparkling, soul-brightening gem INDEPENDENT
Emperor Wed 4 – Thu 5 Dec 7.45pm Dir. Peter Webber, US/Jap, 2013, 105 mins, English and Japanese with subtitles Matthew Fox, Tommy Lee Jones, Eriko Hatsune
At the end of the Second World War General Fellers is charged with reaching a decision of historical importance: should Emperor Hirohito be tried and hanged as a war criminal? Memories of a lost love help him discover his wisdom and humanity in this momentous decision. An impressive historical drama and an unexpectedly poignant love story.

A world-weary political journalist picks up the story of a woman’s search for her son, taken away from her decades ago after she became pregnant as a teenager and was then forced to live in a convent. A film with important things to say about the role of religion, it also offers outstanding lead performances, a healthy dose of cheekiness and a well-earned ring of complicated truth. Mon 16 Dec 7.45pm Dir. François Ozon, Fr, 2013, 95 mins, French with subtitles Marine Vacth, Géraldine Pailhas, Charlotte Rampling
The story of Isabelle, a seventeenyear-old, beginning to explore her sexuality. With its resonances of Buñuel’s Belle De Jour Ozon has found a luminous new face in former model Vacth, who combines teenage rebelliousness and mature seductiveness. The scenes between her and Pailhas have a deep subtlety and intimacy.
Hannah Arendt Tue 17 Dec 7.45pm Dir. Margarethe von Trotta, Ger/Lux/Fr, 2013, 113 mins, German/French/Hebrew with subtitles Barbara Sukowa, Axel Milberg, Janet McTeer, Julia Jentsch, Ulrich Noethen
Thoughtful biopic of influential philosopher and political theorist Hannah Arendt, who reported for The New Yorker on the 1961 war crimes trial of the ex-Nazi Adolf Eichmann. Using footage from the actual Eichmann trial and weaving a narrative that spans three countries, von Trotta beautifully turns the often invisible passion for thought into immersive, dramatic cinema. Screenings from 18 Dec to Christmas Eve will be in the January/February film leaflet – arriving on your doorsteps towards the end of November. The Cinema is closed Wednesday 25 December – Wednesday 1 January
