I am delighted to introduce South Hill Park Arts Centre and Theatre’s brand new season. 2018 sees the return of some firm favourites: Lift Off Dance Festival, which, for the first time, will also host the regional final of U.Dance; Blackeyed Theatre’s hilarious production of Teechers and Theatre Re’s beautiful The Nature of Forgetting, hot from its sell-out success at the Edinburgh Festival – definitely one of my top tips of the season. South Hill Park productions continue to go from strength to strength. Following the success of Macbeth in 2017, Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare’s ultimate tale of forbidden love, is re-imagined, this time with an especially commissioned score. And, Dreamworks’ smash-hit Madagascar – A Musical Adventure pounces onto the Wilde Theatre stage over Easter, a musical extravaganza for the whole family. As you would expect from South Hill Park there is something for everyone, from comedy nights to jazz and classical music, courses and workshops and films in our cosy mansion cinema. It costs over £2M per year to run the Arts Centre and with only 20% now covered by core funding grants we are always looking for new ways to fund the service we provide. As a charity, we rely on the generosity of others, from our loyal volunteers to personal and business donations and in 2018 South Hill Park will launch a series of fundraising initiatives which I hope you will support. But until then, please sign up to easyfundraising.org.uk (see page 4). Don’t forget to book South Hill Park for that special occasion: an anniversary, birthday party or even your wedding day, or enjoy a delicious meal in the Atrium Restaurant, day or evening – I can highly recommend the Sunday lunch. However you choose to spend your time at South Hill Park this spring, I hope you enjoy your visit.

The original tale of star-crossed lovers is re-imagined by the creative team who brought you Macbeth (2017). Amongst the ruins and debris from the aftermath of war, two households continue to fuel their hatred for each other, whilst young love blossoms between Romeo and Juliet. Arguably the most romantic and tragic love story ever told, South Hill Park’s stunning production is ideal for Shakespeare lovers and pupils of the Bard. An original music score makes this a unique interpretation of this well-loved Shakespeare masterpiece.

Hilarious The Stage Top of the class – 10/10 british theatre guide Blackeyed Theatre revives its highly-acclaimed production of John Godber’s classic comedy about life at a struggling academy for Mr Nixon, an unsuspecting new drama teacher. Featuring breathtaking ensemble performances and a bang-upto-date soundtrack, Teechers brings to life an array of terrifying teachers and hopeless pupils through the unique eyes of Salty, Gail and Hobby, three Year 11 students about to leave school for good. Will Mr Nixon abandon his students for a green and pleasant grammar school? Who puts the bounce in Miss Prime, the PE teacher? Will Mrs Parry ever find her Koko? And why does everyone smell of spring onions? Crammed full of unforgettable characters, political left-hooks and razor-sharp comedy, Teechers is more relevant today than ever, a modern classic with something vital to say about education for the ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’.

The Elephant Man
In an instant everything can change. Anything can happen. In the hours immediately after 9/11, two lovers watch from a New York apartment as the dust settles on a world in limbo: the possibilities of a blank slate, the past erased, an adulterous affair wiped clean. Described as ‘sharply funny… gripping’ and ‘compelling’, Neil LaBute’s play portrays two people facing each other, who ask what price, the future? Recommended 14yrs+.
Joseph Merrick, known as The Elephant Man, has been rescued from the life of a ‘Victorian freak’, by the kind hearted Treves; a talented young physician. He’s been given access to a society driven world that previously he could only have dreamt about. Some argue that Treves merely caused him to swap one life of being a freak for another. Or is it indeed possible that a man with such physical debilitating disabilities can actually lead a normal life? Recommended 14yrs+.

Noël Coward’s
Private Lives An exhilarating production ★★★★★ London Classic Theatre presents a major new touring production of Noël Coward’s sparkling comedy. In Private Lives, strong passions and stronger personalities set the stage for a classic battle of the sexes. 1930, Deauville, France. Two newly-married couples occupy adjoining honeymoon suites in the same hotel. As a distant orchestra plays, Sibyl gazes adoringly at her charismatic husband Elyot, while Victor admires his new wife, the vivacious and sophisticated Amanda. Champagne flows and the sea shimmers in the moonlight as the newlyweds prepare for the evening ahead. But when Amanda overhears a familiar voice singing a forgotten song, an old spark reignites, with spectacular consequences. Full of razor-sharp wit and quick-fire dialogue, Private Lives is Noël Coward’s most popular and enduring stage comedy. Extraordinarily written in only three days, Private Lives opened at London’s Phoenix Theatre in August 1930 to packed houses. Since then, this charming comedy of manners has retained its remarkable appeal, captivating audiences all over the world.

Crowthorne Musical Players
The Supertonics Big Band Spring Concert The Supertonics play an entertaining mix of popular swing (Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Duke Ellington) and American songbook jazz classics, plus high-energy music from musicals and the movies – even some rock & roll. The band have been playing together for over 25 years and was recently described by Bracknell News as ‘legendary’. Book early.
Sister Act Sister Act tells the hilarious story of Deloris Van Cartier, a disco diva whose life takes a surprising turn when she witnesses a murder. Under protective custody, she is hidden in the one place she won’t be found – a convent. Disguised as a nun and under the suspicious watch of Mother Superior, Deloris helps her fellow sisters find their voices as she unexpectedly rediscovers her own. A sparkling tribute to the universal power of friendship, sisterhood and music.

The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe
R’n’Beatles
A musical adaptation of CS Lewis’s classic children’s story is the tale of four children evacuated from London during the Blitz to stay with the Professor. Whilst exploring, Lucy stumbles across the wardrobe, a gateway to another world, and the adventure begins. The land of Narnia is under the spell of the wicked White Witch and very quickly the four find themselves caught up in a deadly struggle between good and evil.
If you have ever wondered what it would have been like to witness the birth of arguably the world’s greatest band, then now’s your chance to find out. The R’n’Beatles specialise in performing songs from the legendary Cavern Club and Hamburg era, including all the early hits and the songs that influenced the Fab Four.
This amateur production of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is presented by special arrangement with Samuel French Ltd.

Get Ready
Following a phenomenal run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival to sold-out audiences, award winning Protein presents a satirical look at multicultural Britain. A blend of dance, dialogue and live music, this is a witty and poignant commentary on stereotypical thinking in post-Brexit Britain. Funny, thought-provoking and consistently entertaining. The Scotsman Post-show discussion.
Harking back to the flamingo club circa 1966 and you’ll be on the right track to Get Ready. Think Dusty, think Sandie, add a splattering of British Invasion, fold in some Motown hits and top it all off with some floor stomping northern soul and you have the recipe for Get Ready. The band have played many gigs in the last two years, most recently, for the second year running, Retro Festival in Newbury.

Colour, Light & Transparency
Diana Burch Like many people, Diana Burch is affected by Seasonal Affective Disorder. The nights feel long, the days often short of the sunshine vitamin D. Diana’s ethereal structures will create a serene, interactive exhibition which responds to the viewer through movement, light and shadows. This exhibition includes a space to explore and contemplate how light, colour and movement affects mood, wellbeing and circadian rhythms. Diana works with everyday materials using processes to connect and to fragment them which all form structures and images describing the organic with the inorganic. In these darkest of winter months the space will be lit using lights from light therapy specialists Lumie to harness the natural benefits of light.
Alongside the exhibition Natural Response, by artist Diana Burch, the Cinema programme will be showing a selection of films to shine light on some topics surrounding mental health issues. Please see the full details in the Cinema listings.
With special thanks to light therapy specialists Lumie for sponsoring this exhibition.

Slow Art Day
In 2017 Bracknell Forest Council invited amateur photographers to use their creativity and to capture their interpretation of the theme ‘my favourite green spaces in Bracknell Forest’. The competition theme certainly opened up conversations about what makes a favourite place and why, and challenged photographers to capture the subject matter in their own unique way. This exhibition comprises the best entries from the annual Parks Photo Competition, which is organised by Bracknell Forest Council. Breakfast Preview Sat 24 Feb 10.30am All welcome
Jan Bastow, Catherine Guy-Murrell, Ros Ingham and Trish Roberts This exhibition explores the theme of transience. Each artist explores this theme using different perceptions of humanity, communication, replacement and reclamation. The exhibition has been produced by four local artist printmakers who create work in South Hill Park’s print studio. The artists have applied printmaking techniques to paper, textiles, Perspex and ceramics to produce wall based and sculptural work. Breakfast Preview Sat 10 March 10.30–11.30am All welcome
