Welcome
Contents
It is with a mixture of sadness and pride that I present to you my last season as Artistic Director and CEO of South Hill Park Arts Centre. After 17 years running this wonderful, extraordinary arts centre, I have decided that this is the right time to move on to take on new challenges in the education sector. I would also like to take this opportunity of introducing you to Craig Titley, our new Executive Director, I hope that you will make him feel welcome and that he will enjoy working here as much as I have. I am sure you will agree that there is plenty to enjoy this autumn – from our own productions of Blackadder and The Railway Children, to Blackeyed Theatre’s atmospheric The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and Single Shoes’ magical Disappearing Act. We have some outstanding music, comedy, dance and special interest/celebrity events in the season too, and we hope that the new look brochure will help you find them easily. You will notice that we have our own promotions listed first, followed by our associate companies, and then the rest of the season is presented with four shows to a page.

The Railway Children “Oh!” said Roberta, drawing a long breath; “it was like a great dragon tearing by. Did you feel it fan us with its hot wings?” “I suppose a dragon’s lair might look very like that tunnel from the outside.” said Phyllis. E Nesbit, The Railway Children When their father is wrongly imprisoned, Bobby, Phyllis and Peter are uprooted from their London home to a small house in the country. Although despondent on arrival, the children’s spirits quickly lift and they start to embrace their new country life. When Bobby, Phyllis and Peter discover their village has its own railway station, that’s when the adventure really begins. First published in book form in 1906, it has since been adapted for television, film and stage, delighting audiences for over one hundred years. Follow the Railway Children’s journey this October half-term, in this timeless British classic of childhood innocence and exhilaration.

A Disappearing Act Performed with crisp flair Lyn Gardener, The Guardian Following its tour of Scotland, the US and Bulgaria in 2016, South Hill Park’s newest Associate Company, Single Shoe Productions, brings its latest production to the Wilde Theatre. The great magician, Philip Winterbottom, cordially requests your presence for his final act. Sadly, he’s dead. So... he won’t be there. But, he’s left his son and assistant very clear instructions for his memorial. Join Philip’s family and friends for one final disappearing act. Combining cheesy magic, exuberant music and audience participation, A Disappearing Act is a witty, inventive and sometimes awkward exploration of our mortality, the rituals we use to accept it and say goodbye to the ones we love.

The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde One of the most innovative, audacious companies working in contemporary English Theatre The Stage Doctor Henry Jekyll is a good man. Successful within his field and respected by his peers, he’s close to a neurological discovery that will change the face of medical science forever. However, his methods are less than ethical, and when a close friend and colleague threatens to expose and destroy his work, Jekyll is forced to experiment on himself, whereupon something goes very wrong…or very right. And suddenly Jekyll has a new friend, the brutal Edward Hyde. A thrilling adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s dark psychological fantasy, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde immerses you in the myth and mystery of 19th-century London’s fog-bound streets where love, betrayal and murder lurk at every chilling twist and turn. Gripping, stylish and thought-provoking, this is unmissable theatre. Go on...treat your dark side!

Sue Townsend’s Bazaar and Rummage is a witty and poignant play of ordinary people striving to overcome obstacles in an effort to rejoin society. Three severely agoraphobic women leave their houses for the first time in years, and make it to a rummage sale helped by a controlling ex-agoraphobic social worker and a trainee. But, as the afternoon progresses, the distinction between the ‘helpers’ and the ‘anxious’ becomes less clear. Suitable for 14yrs+. Studio Theatre Company is based at South Hill Park.

David Starkey: Henry Vlll: The First Brexiteer? Henry VIII bestrides our history like a colossus and the decisions he took still reverberate today. The Reformation was the first Brexit; his tumultuous personal life pitting religion against politics as brutally as in our own age of Isis. David Starkey draws on his unique knowledge of Henry’s reign, and his insights as a leading commentator on modern politics, to illuminate both the Tudor age and our own.
Superposition Superposition will take you down the rabbit hole of physics: from the quantum world of the tiny to the expanses of the universe – via a lap dancing club – seeking to answer some big questions on life. A playful journey of discovery: about science; sensuality and spirituality and how our bodies magically mirror the universe through a constellation of particles twinkling within us. Suitable for 15yrs+. Some sexual content and themes.

Leviathan
Megan Henwood + Support
Leviathan follows Ahab, a ship captain hell-bent on capturing the white whale: Moby Dick, a beast as vast and dangerous as the sea itself, yet serene and beautiful beyond all imagining. Ahab’s crew are drawn into the unhinged charisma of their captain, blindly following him on his perilous adventure towards almost certain destruction. Multi-award winning choreographer James Wilton’s cast of seven re-imagines Herman Melville’s seminal novel, Moby Dick. Post-show discussion.
A former BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winner – Megan Henwood has carved out a reputation as one of the leading lights on the UK roots music scene. With two critically acclaimed albums to her name and countless BBC radio exposure – her much anticipated third album release will coincide with this tour.

Shifting Boundaries
Basia Gorska Basia Gorska’s award-winning works are created with her own unique technique using a roller. Basia aspires to work in the most minimalistic way possible. She makes colour the protagonist of her works. She developed her own technique in order to achieve this. Basia is a resident printmaker at South Hill Park. Her works have been exhibited numerous times in countries such as Poland, Belgium, UK, USA. We are also delighted that Basia is also a tutor and offers her students unique insights into printmaking techniques.
The changing quality of light and movement on water is the starting point for this exhibition of original printmaking. The still reflection on a pond can break into a thousand ripples as a swan moves by. The flow of a river leads the eye along the bank and brings thoughts of other times and places. So much inspiration to excite the skilful members of Print @ the Park, based at South Hill Park, using various printmaking methods such as linocut, lithograph, etching, collagraph and screen-print for their new show. All works are available for sale.
Yvette Hawkins and Judith Davies Shifting Boundaries is a collaboration between artists Yvette Hawkins and Judith Davies exploring geographical and geological boundaries between Scotland and England, formed in most part by the River Tweed. The collaboration challenges the boundaries between Yvette and Judith’s practices in paper, textiles and ceramics to make works that explore materiality and brings about new ways of working.

Natural Response
Festive Folly
Diana Burch Like many people, Diana Burch is affected by Seasonal Affective Disorder. The nights feel long, the days often short of the sunshine vitamin D. Diana’s ethereal structures will create a serene, interactive exhibition which responds to the viewer through movement, light and shadows. This exhibition includes a space to explore and contemplate how light, colour and movement affects mood, wellbeing and circadian rhythms. Diana works with everyday materials using processes to connect and to fragment them which all form structures and images describing the organic with the inorganic. In these darkest of winter months the space will be lit by using lights from art therapy specialists Lumie to harness the natural benefits of light.
Working with set designer, Victoria Spearing, we will be creating an enchanting festive shop inspired by South Hill Park’s Beauty and the Beast. The space will be beautifully decorated and will exhibit original artworks which will be available to buy as part of our Unique Gifts from South Hill Park.
Light Intervention Phase 1
Fragmental, Diana Burch
This year we are working with associate artists to develop a light intervention within the grounds of South Hill Park. This artwork will be developed over the winter months, in 2017, with the artist, curator and wider South Hill Park team. The next phase will happen in the winter months 2018 concluding in a light exhibition. More information will be updated to the website. If you are interested and would like more information on this programme please contact Cat Cooke: cat.cooke@southhillpark.org.uk
With special thanks to light therapy specialists Lumie for sponsoring this exhibition.
