welcome Help us step back 100 years in time as we re-examine the life, times and history of people in our local community and further afield during WW1. We are collecting First World War stories, copies of documents, diary entries and photographs to create an installation which will run during the course of our WW1 season, culminating in the promenade production of Oh What a Lovely War! at South Hill Park in July. Your family may not have taken part in the war but been affected by it in some way, even displaced by it – we want to hear your story. If you would like to share your family story then please email info@sceneproductions. co.uk and Kelly will get back to you. We are very grateful to Bracknell Forest Council in their support of this project. There are plenty of other summer highlights too and whatever you do, don’t miss out on the rare opportunity to experience a full-scale professional musical when Avenue Q hits the Wilde Theatre in June.

Heroes

Developed from the international best-selling book, Ali and Nino remains a testament to the strength of love in a war-torn world. Set in the Middle East during the First World War, this is a gripping story of abduction and revenge.

By Gerald Sibleyras Translated by Tom Stoppard Studio Theatre Wed 28 – Sat 31 May 7.45pm £12.50, Conc £10.50

Meet three World War I veterans who pass their monotonous days in a military hospital by engaging in verbal battles of long-forgotten military campaigns, grumblings about the staff, and reflections on their lives. Looking over the cemetery to the poplars beyond, they dream of freedom. Will today be the day they finally make it to Indochina or perhaps only as far as the top of the hill? Winner of the Olivier Best New Comedy award, Gerald Sibleyras’ Heroes is both hilarious and poignant.

With a score heavily influenced by traditional Georgian and Persian music as well as performers drawn from around the world, Ali and Nino promises to be an epic tale of passion in the face of adversity. Directed by National Theatre of Scotland director Joe Douglas with music by Tarek Merchant, Ali and Nino marks the beginning of a major international collaboration with theatres in the Caucusus.

George Grosz (1893–1959) was one of the greatest satirical artists of the 20th century. A co-founder of the Berlin Dada group and a revolutionary in the 1920s, he made hundreds of drawings depicting the vices and injustices of a society on the brink of economic and moral collapse. Many of Grosz’s drawings were published in portfolios by the left wing publisher Malik-Verlag and this new Hayward Touring exhibition presents two of the most powerful: Ecce Homo, 1923, and Hintergrund (Background), 1928. The exhibition premiered at the Sheffield Institute of the Arts Gallery and after its presentation at South Hill Park Arts Centre it will tour to venues across the UK in 2014. The Big No derives its title from George Grosz's autobiography A Little Yes and a Big No. The exhibition is curated by film maker, curator and writer Lutz Becker.

Ron McAllister, Chief Executive writes: ‘One of the most touching, believable stories at this year’s Edinburgh festival was told by a life-sized puppet of a crotchety old man called Roger, manipulated with skill and understanding by three performers, centring on the relationship he builds with a student volunteer visitor. He treats his visitor with distain at first but soon a close bond emerges – until the old man asks what many of us would consider to be unthinkable. He wants his young friend to help him die. This is a bitter-sweet performance delivered with consummate skill. I cannot recommend it highly enough.’ The beautiful script, phenomenal puppetry, and stunning live music make this an incredible piece of theatre  THREE WEEKS

Years have passed since political prisoner Paulina suffered at the hands of her sadistic captor: a man whose face she never saw, but can still recall with terrifying clarity. Tonight, by chance, a stranger arrives at the secluded beach house she shares with her husband Gerardo, a human rights lawyer. A stranger Paulina is convinced was her tormentor and must now be held to account. Tense, moving and thought provoking – a powerful play dealing with themes of torture, justice and revenge that are more relevant today than ever.

Kyle is comfortable with his life as a gay male escort until the day he is hired by a premiership footballer and finds himself falling in love. But can Kyle maintain a relationship with a closeted footballer in a country where not one pro player is out? The Baronets have, for the last 300 years, been forced, by a witch’s curse, to commit a crime every single day of their lives or die in horrible agonies. To escape the curse and to enable him to marry the girl of his dreams the current Baronet runs away in disguise, with fateful consequences for himself, his family and the theatre-going public. The Blues Band Paul Jones, Dave Kelly, Rob Townsend, Gary Fletcher, Tom McGuinness Wed 7 May 7.30pm Wilde Theatre £21

If music matures like fine wine, 1979 was a vintage year. That’s when Paul Jones and Tom McGuinness, from the hugely successful Manfred Mann, returned to their first love, the blues. They imagined their ‘back to the roots’ project, The Blues Band, would simply earn some beer money. How wrong they were – the public were ready and waiting. Talent goes to talent. Into the ranks came slide guitar ace and superb vocalist Dave Kelly, legendary ex- John Mayall drummer Hughie Flint, (replaced in 1982 by the renowned Rob Townsend of Family), with solid bass provided by Gary Fletcher. The Blues Band’s new studio album, Few Short Lines, amply demonstrates the veneration of their peers. Bob Dylan’s keyboard accomplice, Al Kooper, plays on six tracks; Bruce Springsteen’s comrade, Southside Johnny, provides harmonica and vocals; all lavishly topped off by Paul Jones raunchily duetting with Linda Lewis; plus Dave Kelly’s pairing with Scotland’s soul queen, Maggie Bell.

Upstream Seeding new digital performance Deadline for proposals Mon 28 April 9am Application details available from www.shplive.tv

SHPLive has made an impact on a number of communities which have not been able to engage with SHP physically. We have done this by broadcasting our last two pantomimes to old people’s homes and children’s hospices and hospitals. In the last year we broadcast new pieces of musical theatre to the industry through whatsonstage.com and looked at new ways of encouraging audiences to engage with contemporary dance though our Dare You Watch project. We have also worked off-site supporting projects in Aldeburgh and Guildford.

31

SHPLive.TV and greenhouse have teamed up to provide seed funds for new performed works which embrace the potential of live streaming to an audience on the web and in the performance space. We’re looking for digitally native performance which understands the potential of the internet to create an exciting transmedia experience. This could be interactive cinema, a hypermedia narrative, a mobile immersive game, a transmedia story or a performance that reaches out beyond the stage.

‘Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum’ Sail the seven seas this summer with Jim Hawkins and help this misfit crew find Billy Bones’ treasure. With an hilarious subplot based on Goldoni’s The Servant Of Two Masters, this fun-filled show will have audiences, young and old, bursting with laughter. Jim Hawkins is a young boy who lives at his parents’ inn, The Admiral Benbow, in the eighteenth century. An old sea captain named Billy Bones dies in the inn after being presented with a black spot, an official pirate verdict of judgment. Jim is stirred to action by the spot and its mysterious, accurate portent of Billy’s death. Hastily, Jim unlocks Billy’s sea chest, finding a logbook and map inside. Hearing steps outside, he leaves with the documents before Billy’s pursuers ransack the inn.

Shakespeare’s notorious story of the tangled love triangle that resides between four lovers on the eve of a Royal Wedding. Lysander is in love with Hermia, Hermia is also in love with Lysander, Helena loves Demetrius, but Demetrius loves Helena. Due to Egeus’ wish for his daughter Hermia to marry Demetrius, Lysander and Hermia decide to run away into the forest, however Demetrius and Helena follow. Meanwhile, a group of Athenians are rehearsing a play in the depths of the wood, where the fairy King Oberon is angry at his queen Titania, and to seek revenge, sends his merry servant, Puck to acquire a magical flower to make her fall in love with the first thing she sees when waking from her sleep. Chaos erupts as two opposite worlds collide, mistaken identity and love at first sight proves to be a reality for some but makes an ass of others. Crippling the Blacksmith Part Two: The Boundless Museum Jon Lockhart

Tue 22 April – Fri 16 May

Bracknell Galleries

Private view Thu 17 April 6.30–8pm

The second instalment of Jon Lockhart's Arts Council England funded project exploring museum display, objects and how we interact with them. The year-long project explores our relationship with museum artefacts and in a broader sense how we share tacit knowledge. The project offers an exciting opportunity to shape ideas of collaboration between artists and public institutions. For this stage, Jon has worked directly with users of South Hill Park during open access making and research sessions, negotiating a plan and shape for the exhibition’s main contents. The plan is to create a framework in which the ‘Lockhart Protocol’ becomes a template for developing maximum democratic visitor participation (MDVP) and through this process open the discussion into what ‘making’ really means. The exhibition is a meeting point between artwork, artefact and museum display. Our expectations of how cultural institutions present work, our relationship to the work and the reasons that we choose to surround ourselves with certain objects will be explored.

40

Join artist Jon Lockhart in The Bracknell Gallery, where you can experiment with a range of objects, images, sounds and ideas. You are invited to bring along objects, instruments (that you have made, that you play and traditional instruments too) and anything of genuine interest to you. We will then create soundscapes and ‘objectscapes’ that grow during the drop in sessions. This new work will intermingle with the current exhibition.

Step Up for South Hill Park South Hill Park Arts Centre exists for the community and because of the community. Without the kindness and generosity of those supporters who donate funds to the Centre each year it would not be possible to offer so much in return. South Hill Park Arts Centre is a place where you can spend your life. A cup of coffee on that first date, then dinner and a show, a proposal in the Italian Gardens, followed by a wedding reception in the Recital Room. A few years later you can visit the panto with the children and encourage them to embark on a journey through the arts. Years later, they might even have that cup of coffee on that first date at SHP. It’s a place that can stay with you for a lifetime. Or maybe you were once a stoat in Wind in the Willows, and you have seen your child as a stoat years later. Maybe one day your grandchild will be a stoat…

Gift Vouchers Gift vouchers are now available for any event from our box office
