Based on Erich Maria Remarque’s pacifist novel and renowned as the classic anti-war movie, the film details the slow but steady extermination of a group of idealistic young German soldiers. The Night of the Hunter Thu 24 July 7.45pm Bracknell Film Society Dir. Charles Laughton, US, 1955, 92 mins Robert Mitchum, Lillian Gish, Shelley Winters, Billy Chapin, Sally Ann Bruce
In Charles Laughton’s sole film as director, Robert Mitchum is the heart of absolute darkness as a demonic preacher and killer whose lust for gold leads him to two children, guardians of their jailed dad’s stolen loot. It’s hard to think of a film that cuts so clear a line between innocence and depravity. One of the strangest and finest films to have come out of Hollywood SIGHT & SOUND

Dir. Olivier Dahan, Fr/US/Bel/It, 2014, 103 mins, English and French with some subtitles Nicole Kidman, Tim Roth, Frank Langella, Derek Jacobi
Six years after her celebrated Wedding of the Century, Princess Grace strives to reconcile her past and her present while her husband’s modernisation of an ailing Monaco is halted by de Gaulle. Nicole Kidman is exceptional in this real-life fairy tale and sweeping romance.
Characteristically, director Ken Loach highlights the solidarity and sense of humour of a group of working men as they face the harsh consequences of rail privatisation. The authentic feel is enhanced by a cast of unfamiliar faces, a splendid script by former railwayman Rob Dawber, and an observational style close to documentary.
