welcome As I write this welcome note in the blaze of a hot summer weekend, it is hard to imagine that it is time to talk about our biggest show of the winter: our famous annual pantomime. This year we return to Agraba to visit our friend Aladdin. Agraba has moved a little further East this year so expect much more mystery, mystique and magic. The other striking feature of our Autumn programme is our Afrovibes festival which takes over the whole arts centre for half-term week at the end of October. We examine 20 years of democracy in South Africa in song, dance, drama and critical debate. Four companies from South Africa link up with many local groups to produce this amazing week, so be sure not to miss it. From the Township Café events in the Atrium Café, through to outstanding world-class a capella vocal groups in the Wilde, there is so much going on... you really must get involved. (See p4–5 for details, together with our website, and look out for the Afrovibes booklet).

Pow!! Right in the kisser! Egged on by his missus, Pa Ubu snatches the crown from Good King Wenceslas – hurray for Pa Ubu! – until the peasants get all shirty and in no time everyone’s revolting… Mad, noisy and rude, Jarry’s anarchic, satirical hoo-ha has lost none of its energy and irreverence since it opened in Paris in 1896. Grabbing the future and hurling it at the past, it tossed the rulebook out of the window and then smashed the window. Tipping its hat to Shakespeare, Ubu does the Bard as Richie and Eddie in Bottom might do him…

Private view Fri 19 Sept 6.30–8pm

It’s that time again. The pantomime season is upon us and in their search for inspiration, Print@ the Park artists take the opportunity to look at pantomime past and present; at the roles of principal boy and girl; panto dame; slapstick comedy routines; behind the scenes and follow the traditional cries of ‘oh yes you do’ or ‘oh no you don’t’, and not forgetting ‘it’s behind you’.

A selection of African inspired works will be on display in the Mirror Gallery. Works from local schools, including textiles from Heathfields School will be on display in Reception, Long Gallery and Atrium.

The World That Was Sat 20 Sept – Sun 16 Nov Print Gallery

1914: The First World War – taking a broader look at how lives were lived at home and further afield, Print @ the Park members present their most thoughtful and evocative work using varied printmaking techniques to commemorate the Centenary. Lives would be changed forever as our forebears marched towards a war that would ‘be over by Christmas’.

Using traditional printmaking techniques Print @ the Park once again comes up trumps with colourful and exciting artwork. So as you book your seats for South Hill Park’s Aladdin make sure you don’t miss Print @ the Park’s enticing selling exhibition of original work.

The Group works from the Print Room at South Hill Park. Print @ the Park has a programme of regular selling printmaking exhibitions throughout the year in the Print Gallery, so come to see this thought-provoking exhibition and take the opportunity to buy some original artwork. Step Up for South Hill Park South Hill Park Arts Centre exists for the community and because of the community. Without the kindness and generosity of those supporters who donate funds to the Centre each year it would not be possible to offer so much in return. From aspiring performers cutting their teeth in our community theatre performances to aspiring artists attending our established art and craft courses; literally thousands of people are touched by the work of South Hill Park each year. Through our fundraising campaign, Step Up for South Hill Park, patrons can support the ongoing work of their local Arts Centre from as little as £8.50 per month or single payment of £100. For more information visit www.southhillpark.org.uk/stepup or pick up a flyer.

Legacy

Online

Tickets may be exchanged up to 24 hours before the performance. Please bring your tickets to the box office in advance to arrange your exchange.

South Hill Park Arts Centre is a place where you can spend your life. A cup of coffee on that first date, then dinner and a show, a proposal in the Italian Gardens, followed by a wedding reception in the Recital Room. A few years later you can visit the panto with the children and encourage them to embark on a journey through the arts. Years later, they might even have that cup of coffee on that first date at SHP. It’s a place that can stay with you for a lifetime.

Please visit www.southhillpark.org.uk By phone 01344 484123 During the hours of 7 and 8pm our box office staff are extremely busy – you may experience a delay in your call being answered. In person Call into the Arts Centre and we can take your booking personally.

Payment An 80p admin fee is charged per transaction for bookings made with credit and debit cards in person and over the telephone. Online bookings are subject to a charge of £1.25 per booking. A levy of up to £1 is included in the ticket price to go towards the SHP Development Fund.

Reservations Reservations can be held for four days or until 48 hours prior to a performance. Reservations cannot be made on the day of the performance. Tickets not paid for within this time will be released. We are unable to reserve tickets for near sell-out shows.

Special offers Please note that only one special offer or discount can be applied to each event.

Tickets and concessions Concessions are available to children, students, registered unemployed, registered disabled and those 62 years and above and when available are shown next to the event. Please bring proof of status.

Refunds and resales Tickets, once purchased, cannot be refunded. If the show is sold out, we can try to resell your tickets for you. A £1 administration fee per ticket is charged. Resale cannot be guaranteed.

Data protection When booking a ticket, your details will be held on our database and you will be given the option of being sent information on future shows both at South Hill Park and by other arts promoters that we feel may be of interest to you. At this point please advise us should you not require either of these services.

Access We try to accommodate all visitors to the Art Centre facilities. There are disabled parking bays and ramped access to the premises allowing easy entry to the reception area. There is lift access to the first floors in the main mansion and Theatre allowing people to visit the theatre bar and Bracknell Gallery. There are also adapted toilets equipped with emergency alarms. There may be restricted access to parts of the building due to its eighteenth-century listed status, however, every effort is being made to address this and we recommend pre-booking and we will assist you in any way possible. Helpers accompanying people with disabilities are entitled to a complimentary ticket, please advise box office staff of any special requirements you have when making your booking. An infra-red hearing system has been installed in the Studio and Wilde theatres and a £5 deposit will be required.

The details in the brochure were correct at the time of going to press. However, South Hill Park reserves the right to make changes to the published programme in the event of unforeseen circumstances. We reserve the right to make discounted ticket offers to selected current or potential customers at any time.

Parking

South Hill Park is about seven minutes drive from Bracknell Town Centre in the Birch Hill area. Easily accessible from the M3 (Junction 3) and M4 (Junction 10). We are very well signposted – look for the brown road signs saying ‘Arts Centre’ or showing a comedy mask.

There is FREE but limited parking for 200 cars at South Hill Park. Please note the car park fills up quickly on busy days and you may need to seek alternative parking. Overflow parking is available at Birch Hill Shops, Birch Hill Road, which is a five minute walk across our rear grounds. Please leave yourself plenty of time to park when attending an event at South Hill Park.

Public transport South Hill Park is served well by local buses. From the Bus/Train Station to Birch Hill Shops take either the 171 or 172. It’s then a five-minute walk through our rear grounds to the arts centre building.
