welcome Can it be 30 years since we opened the Comedy Cellar’s doors? – Yes it can! We are now officially the longest running comedy club outside of London. Simon Houlihan and his team are still programming the event and have been involved since we established the club here when I was Head of Music in 1986. Simon and I visited the infamous Tunnel Club in London back then and after dodging the flying pint glasses, we had a bit of a chat with the legendary Malcolm Hardee and decided we could make it work right here in Bracknell. And thank goodness we did, because what would Friday nights in Bracknell have been like without it?! Watch out for our series of special Comedy Club 30 events to mark the anniversary.
The other anniversary we celebrate this season is the 100th anniversary of Roald Dahl’s birth – with our own in-house production, the UK première no less, of The Magic Finger – an enchanting show for the whole family for half-term, together with a visit from Ballet Cymru with not one but two stories from Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes on Sunday 6 November. Dahl’s Deal – save £4 when you buy a combined ticket for these shows. You can witness more adult adventures too this season (including the creation of a monster in Frankenstein in September) before Christmas cheer sets in with our legendary annual panto (the delightful Cinderella this year) and a whole host of festive comedy and music. Have a wonderful autumn at South Hill Park! Ron McAllister Chief Executive, South Hill Park

Art Themen · tenor sax Fri 9 Sept
A winner of the 2008 British Jazz Awards, Art Themen first appeared on the jazz scene in the late 1950s. After involvement with the London blues scene, he fronted the Stan Tracey quartet for 20 years from 1976. He has toured worldwide, and played with many US and British luminaries. An appealing presence on the British jazz circuit for over 40 years… Originally a Dexter Gordon and Sonny Rollins disciple... Themen has proved himself remarkably attentive to the saxophone styles of subsequent generations. John Fordham
Gordon Campbell · trombone Fri 7 Oct
Trombonist Gordon Campbell is famous for his exquisitely beautiful sound. Lead Trombone in the BBC Big Band since 1984, he has played with Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Barbra Streisand, Tony Bennett, Ray Charles, Shirley Bassey and Robbie Williams. He is also Lead Trombone of the John Wilson Orchestra. Gordon Campbell’s trombone playing is one of the great glories of British musical life. He stands alone in terms of phrasing – nobody can play a ballad like him – and his tone is matchless. John Wilson
Tony Woods · alto sax Fri 4 Nov
Tony Woods’ saxophone playing is by turns lyrical and fiery. He has toured extensively and performed at festivals including Manchester and Swanage, and venues like Southbank and Ronnie Scott’s. He has recorded CDs with his own Tony Woods Project, as well as with Tim Whitehead, Pete Churchill and the late Michael Garrick. Woods is phenomenal BBC Music Magazine
Roger Beaujolais · vibraphone Fri 2 Dec
Roger Beaujolais is the first musician in the UK to make a living solely from playing the vibraphone. He has released 18 albums, performed in 25 countries on four continents, and played most of the major jazz festivals in Europe. Completely self-taught (there was no-one to teach him when he started), he is now professor of vibes at Trinity College of Music, London. His whole approach is fresh & original without straining for effect. Dave Gelly (The Observer)

Fashion is a statement, not a style. Fashion does not have to be worn casually nor outside the runway. Fashion is fit for all sizes, for all people of all ages. Paul Sinha has been making his name in the world of stand-up comedy. He’s had great gigs, he’s had horrific gigs and he’s performed at gigs from Aberdeen to Auckland and from Sheffield to Singapore. There have been nine, count ‘em, nine solo shows. Paul Sinha is many many things. He’s a brother, a doctor, a Gemini, a sports fanatic, a godparent, a proud quiz geek and according to Jim Davidson, ‘an Indian poof’. But first and foremost, he is a stand-up comedian. Alan Turing changed the world, in wartime and in our own time. When he died, nine years after the War, aged 41, few people knew of his work cracking the Enigma code of the Germans and few understood the significance of his work in computing. He had imagined the first modern computer, set about building it, and dreamt that one day intelligent machines might think. Only now is his influence recognised – and only now has the state forgiven him. Hugh Whitemore’s play spans Alan Turing’s life, from his schooldays to his death, convicted and at odds with the country he had helped to save. It is the story of the man behind the extraordinary achievements. Based on the account of Turing’s life by Andrew Hodges that inspired The Imitation Game. Elegant and poignant Time magazine
Dick & Lottie bring you a very special Ayckbourn double bill. Never played before as a pair, Invisible Friends is often described as a complimentary play to Woman in Mind: both feature a protagonist who creates an imaginary family to escape her real family. After being knocked out by stepping on the tooth end of a garden rake, Susan experiences hilarious hallucinations in which her oppressive and boring everyday life is replaced by a fantasy in which she is an ideal wife and mother with an ideal family. When Lucy’s imaginary friend Zara becomes all too real and offers to make her family disappear, Lucy is all too happy to agree. But when Zara’s much worse family appears in their place, Lucy has to deal with the consequences of her actions and find a way to bring her own family home. An extremely funny and deeply serious play which appeals to the irrepressible child in every adult and to the insufferable adult in every child London Sunday Times

It took Michael Portillo little more than 10 years to get a seat in the Commons and then rise in power and esteem to a point where he was a favoured leader of his party and possible future PM. A track record like that suggests to many a privileged friend of the
rich and famous with little or no understanding of or care for the ordinary citizen. But since leaving the House almost a decade ago Michael has endeared himself to many with his obvious respect for solid workmanship and creative energy. Michael has championed our great Victorian railways and the daily toil of the working man, as well as the underprivileged (Michael becomes a Single Mum) and the troubled (Death of a School Friend). A historian at heart, listen to his extraordinary story and then feel free to question him about it.

Just the Same Sat 10 Sept – Sun 13 Nov Long Gallery
An exhibition by young people who are, or have been, in the care of Bracknell Forest. The youngest artists on show are still in primary school and the eldest are at university. Featuring in the exhibition is the animation Just the Same, which was created at a workshop at South Hill Park over Easter 2016. The young people making the animation wanted to make others aware of the unhelpful and inaccurate stereotypes that exist about those coming from care backgrounds.

Wilderness Andrew Hardwick Mirror Gallery Sat 26 Nov – Sun 8 Jan
This winter we welcome painter Andrew Hardwick, whose paintings will form a solo exhibition in South Hill Park’s Mirror Gallery. Hardwick’s landscapes derive from familiarity with places – felt through all seasons across moorland, and more recently heathland local to Bracknell. Harwicks paintings are layered with unconventional materials and relevant artifacts producing a rich surface texture. Never untouched by notions of change, memory, history and emotion, the works remind us we are but another layer in time.
Harwick Graduated with an MA in Fine Art from Cardiff in 1997. He has had numerous solo shows across the UK and ROI and his work can also be seen in the 2016 Royal Accademy summer exhibition.
20:20 www.2020printexchange.com Sat 26 Nov – Sun 8 Jan Long Gallery
The Printroom at South Hill Park participates in the annual exchange project: 20:20 Started in 2009 as a project between Hot Bed Press in Salford and Red Hot Press in Southampton, the fast-growing project showcases a snapshot of what is happening right now in printmaking across the UK. It has grown each year with over 50,000 prints created to date. Last year nearly 600 artist took part from over 42 print studios, including Islensk Grafik from Iceland as a guest international print studio. Each artist creates an edition of 25 prints the size being 20cm square, which are collated and redistributed randomly. The entire 20:20 collection will be on tour across the UK and a selection of prints will be on display in the Long Gallery.
