a taste of what’s on South Hill Park – the pulsating creative heart of Berkshire – can you feel our beating heart? So what are we creating this season? The world première of a new production of Dracula; the revival of an innovative actor/string quartet production of Othello; a community production of Fawlty Towers; a newly commissioned ‘in the dark’ production of A Christmas Carol and a brand new panto Snow White – which we will be live streaming across the country. Most of our in-house productions or co-productions are designed and built right here in the Wilde Theatre with our remarkable team led by designer Victoria Spearing, and Othello and Dracula will tour to 37 venues throughout the UK. SHP – putting Bracknell at the heart of the creative life of Berkshire – be a part of it! Ron McAllister, CEO of SHP

Broadcast Conversations
This autumn Visual Arts celebrates 40 years of being an arts centre with an Artist in Residence Retrospective showcasing the wealth of creative talents South Hill Park has harboured over the years. Current Resident Ceramicist, Samantha Robertson and Silversmiths Louise Walker and Holly Barton will also be exhibiting their latest works in Designed to Serve and HB designs.
The autumn season has a real musical tone to it and we think you’re going to love it. A brand new community choir launches and this one is for everyone. In November we have a brand new two-day songwriters’ workshop for budding singer/songwriters, the challenge will be to create a piece from scratch under the tuition of Andy Pearce and drawing on the collective experience of the group. And, of course, we are still running all of your favourite classes in drama, dance and music. I would like to thank Youth Services and Wellington College for their continued support, without this support Creative Learning would not be able to run such a fantastic programme for young people.
With the government’s austerity measures having wide-ranging impacts on public services, I think it’s important that we try to keep cultural venues open and available as spaces where ideas and opportunity can flourish. This season we are hosting the Community Media Association’s Broadcast Conversations which explore partnerships with local radio and TV, plus the Berkshire Digital business network meetings, which provide a low level opportunity for new digital developments to be shared and connections to be made.

It’s time for the sleepy village of Loxford to choose a May Queen... but there’s a problem. The committee can’t seem to find a suitable candidate: ‘Country virgins, if there be such, think too little and see too much...’ None of the local girls quite fit the bill and so all eyes focus on Albert, from the greengrocers, pure and innocent as they come. Surely a perfect candidate to be Loxford’s very first May King? But before long - crowned with a garland of orange blossom, and rewarded with £25 for his trouble – Albert is slipped a little something in his celebratory glass of lemonade and things start to go very wrong… The music fizzes, as sparkling as the lemonade that intoxicates our hero: a genuinely hilarious satire with a score of great beauty, Albert Herring is a masterpiece by a master composer.

Check in to the most disorganised hotel in the country, Fawlty Towers. Basil, Sybil, Polly and, of course, Manuel will try and make their regular and occasional new guests feel welcome at this famous hotel, but don’t be surprised if things go hilariously wrong.
‘I can give you your forbidden, secret desire – the soft bitter touch of my kiss, the surrender, the chance to live and love forever.’ The time is 1897. Mankind is on the cusp of vast technological change and media innovation. Poised between traditional beliefs and the shock of the new world, an altogether darker fear is emerging.
Three episodes of this hugely successful TV series will be performed on the Wilde Stage, so sit back and enjoy the chaos that is Fawlty Towers.
Stretching from London to the mountainous wastes of Transylvania, Bram Stoker’s timeless gothic thriller embodies the struggle to break taboos and stop the unknown outside becoming the enemy within. As Dracula’s shadow looms large over England, a small group of young men and women, lead by Professor Van Helsing, are locked in a struggle for survival where only the fittest will survive. Adapted by John Ginman, this brilliant, theatrical treatment of Bram Stoker’s adventure blends Victorian gothic with the contemporary, combining specially commissioned live music, powerful ensemble performances and innovative design, Blackeyed to create an exciting and thoughtprovoking theatrical experience.

Critically-acclaimed Transport re-invents this popular favourite among Shakespeare’s comedies. Banished from her homeland, Rosalind journeys into the wild depths of the forest to find her exiled father. A vibrant, touching, and timely story about love, statelessness and above all the human capacity to endure. Brought to you from the innovative company behind Invisible, 1001 Nights, Elegy and Europe.
Following the huge success of Romeo and Juliet, Icarus Theatre Collective returns with a re-run of Othello, a legend in his own lifetime: noble, brave, victorious. Honest Iago fuels his venom with malignance and hateful contempt. Othello’s world will be brought vividly to life as a live string quartet and stunning ensemble cast combine with some of literature’s most vibrant language and characters. A dangerous tale of ambition, jealousy and love will unfurl as Shakespeare’s classic tale of deception hurtles to its dramatic and poignant conclusion.

1882. After years of inspiration, innovation and occasional idiocy, Yorkshireman Thomas Crapper is given the commission to provide toilets for Her Majesty Queen Victoria. On the eve of the first ‘royal flush’ Thomas writes a very personal letter to a girl he hasn’t seen in over 40 years… A revealing, touching and hilarious account of the man who became Britain’s number one at getting rid of number two.

Rose, faced with a further spread of cancer, has come, on her counsellor’s advice, to a lonely Yorkshire cottage. For a week she will live alone recounting memories from her past via tape recorder, without the aid of her smothering husband and make some decisions about where she is going. Embracing her solitude avidly, she nevertheless reckons without Ralph, a very unusual odd-job man, who proves to be not the solution she seeks but the catalyst to her ultimate decision. ‘... accentuates the positive, is funny, honest and never maudlin.’ Financial Times

A joint exhibition by Artists in Residence Louise Walker and Samantha Robertson, showcasing a celebration of their shared passion for design and functionality within their respective disciplines. The work displayed demonstrates the relationship between contemporary silversmithing and ceramics. Louise explores combining contrasting metals and pushing the boundaries of traditional silversmithing ideas. She takes the conventional technique of silver soldering to a new level, developing the skill to discover new applications. Samantha’s concern with form and function combined with a love of food and drink has resulted in a range of tableware designed for purpose. Simple wheel thrown and press moulded tableware are complemented with colourful slip decoration inspired by the natural environment.

Many thanks to all who have already made donations to the cinema appeal. You truly are South Hill Park cinema stars. Your donations have really made a big difference and we have already been able to start on some of work taking the first steps towards the full digital upgrade. The final push is on to raise the funds to complete the project and totally secure the future of the cinema. If you want to find out how you could help please pick up a Cinema Appeal leaflet from reception.
Legacy South Hill Park Arts Centre is a place where you can spend your life. A cup of coffee on that first date, then dinner and a show, a proposal in the Italian Gardens, followed by a wedding reception in the Recital Room. A few years later you can visit the panto with the children and encourage them to embark on a journey through the arts. Years later, they might even have that cup of coffee on that first date at SHP. It’s a place that can stay with you for a lifetime. Or maybe you were once a stoat in Wind in the Willows, and you have seen your child as a stoat years later. Maybe one day your grandchild will be a stoat… Have you ever considered supporting South Hill Park by leaving a donation in your legacy? It can help ensure that generations to come can enjoy SHP just as you have. If you would like to discuss this in further detail, please contact SHP’s Head of Marketing on 01344 413511.
The details in the brochure were correct at the time of going to press. However, South Hill Park reserves the right to make changes to the published programme in the event of unforeseen circumstances. We reserve the right to make discounted ticket offers to selected current or potential customers at any time.
