Easter school for young performers Calling all budding young performers; we need you for our Easter production of the musical Just So, inspired by the stories of Rudyard Kipling. If you’re aged 6–16yrs and love acting, singing and dancing then this is the perfect school holiday boredom buster for you. This Easter we are running a week-long performance school here at South Hill Park, during which you will rehearse your socks off before taking to our Wilde Theatre stage over the bank holiday weekend to perform in our professional musical production for the public. Psssst, adults… this is a perfect alternative to regular childcare and at a fraction of the price. But we won’t tell the kids if you don’t and they’ll think you’re ace for sending them somewhere so exciting. As well as giving each young performer the chance to perform for the public this is also a great opportuity for them to olearn from West End actor/director Adam Stafford and our own children’s tutor Joe Maylan. No experience is necessary, just bags of enthusiasm.

Mark Hooper, Creative Learning writes: ‘The Wardrobe Ensemble follow up their sell-out debut show RIOT with 33. The Wardrobe Ensemble do not disappoint with their trademark humour, fast paced action and precise ensemble work. Their balance of comedy and pathos makes this performance compelling to watch. 33 combines soulful stories, macho choreography and original music to present their take on the Chilean mining disaster of 2010. The Wardrobe Ensemble masterfully tells the story of the 33 men stuck half a mile underground, the journalists in the desert above and the world that watched them from afar. A tale of friendship, hope and Elvis Presley, 33 takes you beyond the newsrooms, past the cameras and leaves you 2000 feet underground. An outlandish, touching and funny story of men on the brink of death, fame and madness.’
Tue 22 April Studio Theatre Ten Out of Ten is an Ovalhouse commission
John Potter, Press writes: ‘Ten Out of Ten is the most thought provoking piece of theatre I have seen in a long time. Three actors take each audience member on their own individual journey getting them to think of their past experiences in life, failures and how they messure success. Everyone is different, but this extremely light-hearted show will make you think of what you’ve achieved in your own life, after all life shouldn’t be about the feeling of constant failure. I left the theatre in an up-beat mood whilst having a sense of achievement for certain aspects of my life.’ It’s all terrific light-hearted fun… thoroughly engaging. Toot are one to watch. Ron McAllister, Chief Exective writes:
‘One of the most touching, believable stories at this year’s Edinburgh festival was told by a life-sized puppet of a crotchety old man called Roger, manipulated with skill and understanding by three performers, centring Mike’s been asked to father a child by his dead Dad’s on the relationship he builds with a student volunteer friend’s daughter. He doesn’t know her yet, but it is visitor. He treats his visitor with distain at first but a once in a lifetime chance. His boyfriend Bert is not convinced. Their housemate, Sofia, has her own fish to soon a close bond emerges – until the old man asks fry. She needs to find a man before it is too late but her what many of us would consider to be unthinkable. He wants his young friend to help him die. Dad keeps getting in the middle.
An award-winning, critically acclaimed portrait of fatherhood by international company Babakas. Inventive comedy and unforgettable emotion combine in a story that relates to us all.’

‘These impulses come over me all of a sudden, and I just can’t resist them.’ Hedda Gabler, one of the most notorious heroes (anti-heroes?) of theatre, saw her time as a single girl run out and so she married George Tesman, a man she clearly no longer loves – if, indeed, she ever did. Now Hedda is driven to diabolical ends trying to discover purpose in her life as she increasingly finds the world closing in on her.

A-levels are finished, but for Yorkshire’s finest pupils, their education has a long and bumpy track ahead. Back to school to train for their Oxbridge entrance exams, the group find themselves stuck in the middle of antithesis styles of teaching. Hector brings life, drama, music and fun into the classroom, while sceptical Irwin has been brought in by the Headmaster to teach a callous and harsh route to Oxbridge. But with the distractions that come with being a teenage boy and the pressure of university on their minds, the question is, will any of them survive the cut? London Contemporary Theatre is committed to creating exciting, fast-paced theatre and radio theatre.

‘Innocence there is a mark on you!’ A visual jigsaw set amidst the backdrop of WW1, exploding from one scene to the next, combining intense physicality with projections, puppetry and a haunting soundtrack. The agonizing effects of war trauma and the utter devastation of the downtrodden man still resonate 200 years after the play was first written. As we approach the centenary of WW1, this production delves into the mind of a broken soldier; a mind plagued with apocalyptic visions, twisted, infected and plunged into homicidal lunacy.
Kath and her elderly father, Kemp, live in a house on the outskirts of a rubbish dump. Their drab existence is interrupted by the arrival of a new lodger, the enigmatic Mr Sloane. Provocative and sexually ambiguous, Sloane soon has both Kath and her brother, Ed, competing for his favours. But all is not as it seems. Behind Sloane’s nonchalant demeanour lies a calculating psychopath with a dark and secretive past. Seduction, blackmail and murder lie waiting in the wings. First staged at the Arts Theatre in London in 1964 it won the London Critics ‘Variety’ award for Best Play of the Year. Its unique blend of farce and black comedy beautifully captures the suppressed desires of the period.
This production is influenced by the styles of Berkoff and Artaud and comes with a free education pack.
London Classic Theatre has established a reputation for producing bold, imaginative theatre of the highest quality. This revival of their 2003 production of the play celebrates the 50th Anniversary of Orton’s classic black comedy.
Chillingly combines hilarity with horror… this production has a dream-like quality, powerfully evoked by immaculately slick, highly imaginative physical theatre. THE STAGE ON METAMORPHOSIS

A pure and devastating distillation of the human essence in the face of approaching death. In a nebulous place between farcicality and reality, Endgame is an embodiment of the Theatre of the Absurd. The play follows the daily routines of Hamm and Clov, a haggardly old man and his tired slave. There are two worlds within this play: the world within, the space to which these characters are confined and in which they exist, and the world without, the hellish space outside the windows of their confinement. Hamm and Clov spend the entirety of the play suffering through pain and reflecting on the meaninglessness of existence.

Two of the Guildhall’s most brilliant graduates open our Spring series with a programme that contains two monuments of the repertoire – Liszt’s thrilling B minor Piano Sonata and Rachmaninov’s great Sonata for Cello and Piano. The programme also contains works by Scarlatti, Kapustine and Schumann.
Kentaro and Sarah-Jane are distinguished graduates of the Royal College of Music. Both have solo careers, combining to give recitals as a duo. Their programme has a Spanish flavour with music by Albéniz, Mompou and Obradors, but also has songs and arias by Mozart and Richard Strauss.
Gold medal winner from the Royal Northern College, Ukrainian pianist Slava Sidorenko is already renowned as a solo performer. His programme includes Bach’s Italian Concerto, Beethoven’s Op.110 Sonata in A flat, Rachmaninov’s Corelli Variations and Variations on a theme of Paganini by Kapustin. Truly an exciting musical evening.

The distinguished young Chinese pianist, Ji Liu makes a welcome return to South Hill Park. His programme includes Schubert’s sublime C minor Sonata, Two Nocturnes Op.62 by Chopin and Liszt’s Reminiscences de Don Juan. His recital opens with something quite different – Winnsboro Cotton Mills Blues by Rzewski.
Four friends from the Royal College formed a quartet to perform Messiaen’s masterpiece, Quartet for the End of Time. Their performance at London’s Cadogan Hall last year was acknowledged to be of the finest. The programme also includes Mozart’s Violin Sonata K 454 and Brahms’s Clarinet Trio Op.114.

Tchaikovsky was at the height of his powers when he composed the glorious music for this passionate story of love, obsession and tragedy. Beautifully sung in English by excellent, young, professional singers and with full orchestra, Tchaikovsky’s finest opera promises an evening not to be missed. The poignant story of a love which, overtaken by obsession, ends in tragedy.

There will be a pre-performance talk about the opera and production at 6.15pm, given by the Artistic Director of Swansea City Opera, Brendan Wheatley, in the Wilde Bar. Please inform box office at the time of booking if you will attend the talk. Taking place after the events in The Barber of Seville, the opera recounts a single day in the palace of the Count Almaviva in Spain. The Count has designs on one of his maids, Susanna, who is going to be married to Figaro, the Count’s valet. Figaro, Susanna, and the Countess conspire to embarrass the Count and expose his infidelity. At night, all find themselves on the palace grounds, where a comic series of cases of mistaken identity results in … well you must come and find out. Beautifully staged in English with elegant 18th-century costumes and performed by some of the finest singers and orchestral players in the country, Figaro will give you an enchanting and hilarious evening’s entertainment - a feast for the eyes and ears. This company always delivers the goods and when the goods is a deliciously uplifting slice of Mozart it can be very good indeed. NORTH DEVON JOURNAL

A joint exhibition by Artists in Residence Louise Walker and Samantha Robertson, showcasing a celebration of their shared passion for design and functionality within their respective disciplines. The work displayed demonstrates the relationship between contemporary silversmithing and ceramics. Louise explores combining contrasting metals and pushing the boundaries of traditional silversmithing ideas. She takes the conventional technique of silver soldering to a new level, developing the skill to discover new applications. Samantha’s concern with form and function combined with a love of food and drink has resulted in a range of tableware designed for purpose. Simple wheel thrown and press moulded tableware are complemented with colourful slip decoration inspired by the natural environment.

Julian Gordon Mitchell’s pictures are a window into an imaginary world. Objects and spaces, at first familiar, slowly reveal their irrationality. Mitchell uses the conventions of realism to create an eerie reinvention of metaphysical art. Mitchell is a Berkshirebased artist who has exhibited widely both internationally and in the UK. His paintings have been displayed at the Royal Academy, National Portrait Gallery and Cabinet Office.
EXHIBITIONS Melanie Paice Reception Mon 11 Nov – Sun 26 Jan
Melanie explores the joy of breathing new life into objects and surfaces which have been discarded by others. Her recent body of work sprung from a desire to make use of the slates and tiles discovered whilst clearing the space where her studio was to be built. Creating the works in the new studio became a fitting cycle of re-use and renewal. Melanie Paice currently teaches Get Confident and Further Fun with Oils at South Hill Park and her work will be on display in Reception this autumn.

Crippling the Blacksmith Part Two: The Boundless Museum Jon Lockhart Bracknell Galleries Tue 22 April – Fri 16 May Private view Thu 17 April 6.30–8pm
The second instalment of Jon Lockhart’s Arts Council England funded project exploring museum display, objects and the audiences that interact with them. The year-long project explores our relationship with museum artefacts and in a broader sense how we communicate tacit knowledge in all walks of life. The project offers an exciting opportunity to shape an idea through collaborative exchange. For this stage, Jon will work directly with users of South Hill Park during Artist lab day of making and research in order to negotiate a plan and shape for the exhibition’s main contents. The plan is to create a framework in which the ‘Lockhart Protocol’ will be a template for developing maximum democratic visitor participation (MDVP) and through this process allow a broader discussion into what ‘making’ is really all about.
Artist Lab: The Boundless Ideas Emporium Jon Lockhart Tue 18 & Sat 22 Feb 10am-4pm FREE but booking is required
If you could make anything, invent anything, change the world, inspire a generation, could you do it? What marvels will our future world contain and how will the digital and concrete objects images and ephemera from our times fit into this new Utopia? Drop in and join artist Jon Lockhart on a journey into making, thinking, playing and planning.
The final show will be a dynamic explosion between our expectations of an exhibition, our knowledge of how cultural institutions should work and about why we choose to surround ourselves with the objects that contribute.

Legacy
When booking a ticket, your details will be held on our database and you will be given the option of being sent information on future shows both at South Hill Park and by other arts promoters that we feel may be of interest to you. At this point please advise us should you not require either of these services.
South Hill Park Arts Centre is a place where you can spend your life. A cup of coffee on that first date, then dinner and a show, a proposal in the Italian Gardens, followed by a wedding reception in the Recital Room. A few years later you can visit the panto with the children and encourage them to embark on a journey through the arts. Years later, they might even have that cup of coffee on that first date at SHP. It’s a place that can stay with you for a lifetime. Or maybe you were once a stoat in Wind in the Willows, and you have seen your child as a stoat years later. Maybe one day your grandchild will be a stoat… Have you ever considered supporting South Hill Park by leaving a donation in your legacy? It can help ensure that generations to come can enjoy SHP just as you have. If you would like to discuss this in further detail, please contact SHP’s Head of Marketing on 01344 413511.
The details in the brochure were correct at the time of going to press. However, South Hill Park reserves the right to make changes to the published programme in the event of unforeseen circumstances. We reserve the right to make discounted ticket offers to selected current or potential customers at any time.
