The South of Iceland is unique and that part of the country which by far the greatest numbers of foreign visitors come to. There everything that makes Iceland interesting to visit can be found the year around. Here history follows you at every footstep, both ancient and recent. There is creative art, culture and flourishing trade and endless possibilities to enjoy the outdoor life in all seasons. Above all there is the awesome and rugged nature from the mountains to the sea. In all the seasons of the year tourists can find something to their liking. In the winter the sun is reflected from the pearly white snow, on long dark winter nights the northern lights dance around the starlit sky and the moon is in and out of cloud. Then beauty, peace and quiet reigns, unforgettable to those who experience it. Trips across the highlands as well as the lowlands are indescribable adventure trips during both summer and winter. The farmer minds his farm. All the year is a busy time in the country, and in the spring the country is covered with its summer foliage. Life outdoors and trips assume a new form: hiking tours, riding trips, angling in rivers and lakes. Nature takes on a new look: hot springs, lava fields, volcanoes, waterfalls, the highlands, glaciers, rivers and lakes, nature and life is reborn after the frosts of winter and the countryside is at its most beautiful. Come to the southern countryside and look at the beauty, listen to the wind and the silence, discover the peace and quiet, and last but not least you may discover yourself. Welcome to South Iceland, we’ll be happy to see you.

Hveragerðisbær
Þorlákshöfn - Ölfus
A vast number of people pass through or by Hveragerði each year. With a population of 2300 and located only 45 km from Reykjavik, Hveragerði may be seen from the vantage point of the Kambar mountain slope, as it spreads out across a 5,000 year-old lava field. Troughout the year, pillars of steam may be seen rising up out of the town – and in summer the town is truly a green community, abounding in trees. A green revolution is taking place as areas of woodland in and around Hveragerði expand, with the locals working together in order to further develop their blossoming town. Without doubt, Hveragerði´s, most precious gem is it´s geothermal area – there cannot be many communities in the world with hot springs literally in their back yard. For safety reasons, the geothermal area is securely fenced off, but may be visited by arrangement with the tourist information centre. A new hot spring area broke through the ground in the earthquake that shook Iceland´s southern part on the 29th of May 2008. It is situated in the hillside above the town. Several very active hot springs can be seen that throw colourful mud and clear water in the air. A spectactular sight that should not be missed. Besides the hot springs, Hveragerði has much to offer. Trout and salmon swim in the Varmá river, berries can be had for the picking on the heath to the west of the town, and the area abounds in excellent walking routes. Not to mention the swimming pool, hot baths, whirlpools, a natural sauna and a fitness center. Also the NLFÍ Health and Rehabilitation Clinic offers the opportunity to seek health and happiness.
Ölfus’ main town is Thorlákshöfn (Þorlákshöfn), west of Eyrarbakki. Its´ main importance is as a port as it has the only viable harbour on Iceland’s southern coastline between Grindavík in the west and Höfn in the east. It serves as the departure point for ferries to the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago. The town has a population of about 1500 people. The main industries here are ship outfitting and fish preparation, with business and service industries growing fast. Traveller services are good, with an outdoor swimming pool with hotpots, steam bath and a brand new waterslide. A good campsite is next door to the pool, with indoor cooking facilities and motor home spaces. From the swimming pool there are many walking routes around the surrounding area and longer walks along the coast, leading all the way to Selvogur and Herdísarvík and along the beach leading to Óseyrarbrú and Eyrarbakki. In the Egilsbúð library and museum there are items connected to the development of the town. The town church in Thorlákshöfn is built in a unique style, and Strandarkirkja church in Engilsvík in Selvogur is famous as a place for vows. Anyone wishing to go caving has the Raufarhólshellir caves, which are some 1360 metres long. Many scenes in the epic blockbuster movie “Flags of our Fathers” (directed by Clint Eastwood and produced by Steven Spielberg - 2005) were filmed on the black beaches close to Thorlákshöfn.There are also plans to construct a big international golf course close to Thorlákshöfn.

Vestmannaeyjabær There are places in Iceland that simply have to be experienced. The Westman Islands (Vestmannaeyjar) fill that group by virtue of their natural beauty, the bounty of their wildlife, particularly birds, and by being historically and geographically one of Iceland´s most distinctive places. The islands are part of a young and still active submarine volcanic system, most of them coming into being 10-20 0000 years ago. The youngest of the group, however, Surtsey, south of Heimaey, only grew fromthe sea floor in episodic eruptions from 1963-1966. The famous eruption on Heimaey, the largest and sole inhabited island was, however, even more spectacular. It began in January 1973, lasting until early July. The cone Eldfell (fire mountain in Icelandic), rose, the island became 2,3 km2 larger and block lava flows and ash burned or buried almost 400 buildings. The remains of the eruption are among the island´s most fascinating historical locales. A journey to the Westman Islands is neither more expensive nor difficult than to many mainland places. The only difference is in the preparation as prior booking whether by sea or air is advisable. From Reykjavík the trip by air is only 20 minutes, from Bakki in Landeyjar mere 6 minutes. The passenger and car ferry Herjólfur makes the trip from Þorlákshöfn in 2.45 hours, offering the obvious advantage of a relaxing sea voyage and your vehicle on hand on arrival. Heimaey may only be about 13 km2, but that small area contains enough magical scenery and birdlife to delight the visitor for days. Visitors there have always been, but as an industry tourism is a young one in the islands. It is even possible to put a date to its birth: 1973 after the eruption, when visitors from all over the world came to view the aftermath and remains of the catastrophe.
16
www.south.is
Thirty years later, Eldfell, the new cone, and the cooled and hardened lava flows, have befittingly become part of a magnificent environment, only a part of what awaits the visitors. Other popular attractions are one of Iceland´s best 18 hole golf courses, deep sea fishing, bird- and whale watching and hiking: up volcanoes, over lava fields or along the shore. Museums show the history of the two and four legged inhabitants of land as well as those of air and sea through the centuries. Comfortable accommodation is available as well as first class restaurants and coffee houses. A short daytrip, as the only option of visiting us, is therefore very much a thing of the past. The islands´ tourism industry endeavours to make visitors feel welcome and preferably wish to prolong their stay.
Selfoss - Árborg With a population of about six thousand and five hundred Selfoss is the largest town in South Iceland and is a part of the Árborg Municipality which was established in 1998. It also consists of the districts of Eyrarbakki and Stokkseyri. The distance from the capital is 57 km. In addition to the Ring Road, Iceland’s main highway, that runs east-west through the town, roads lead from Selfoss in all directions (north to the Golden Circle/ Keldur route and south to Stokkseyri/Eyrarbakki/Reykjanes peninsula). The town is an excellent centre for day tours to the many places of interest in the area. Some salmon is caught downriver from the aforementioned bridge. All necessary services for tourists (including a hospital, pharmacies, banks, shopping center, restaurants, hotels, golf course, cinema, horse farms, airport and much more) are available in Selfoss.

Eyrarbakki - Árborg
Flóahreppur
The friendly village Eyrarbakki used to be the largest commercial community and the main harbour on the South Coast of Iceland. A large number of preserved houses from the period 1890-1920 are situated in Eyrarbakki and therefore a visit is like reverting a 100 years back in time. Other popular tourist attractions are The Eyrarbakki Maritime Museum and the Árnessýsla Folk Museum, located at legendary “The House” in Eyrarbakki, built in 1765. A fine camping site, guesthouse and restaurant, are also in Eyrarbakki. On the rocky shoreline you can witness an amazing view of the Atlantic ocean, as well as watching the surf break. It is an ideal spot for hiking and bird watching. The Flói Bird Reserve lies northwest of Eyrarbakki which is an important nesting area.
Peaceful environment, historic areas and beautiful nature east of Selfoss. Agriculture is the main trade along with increasing tourism services. The culture has a long history and consists of handymen and traders. The community offers many occasions for social gatherings, i.e. the women council and a youth organization. Here is the great waterfall Urridafoss in the mighty Thjorsa-river and greatest lava flow on Earth since Ice-age: The Thjorsa-lava. Scenery is exceptionally wide; a ring of mountains, glaciers and islands. This is the location to many historic places from the Floamanna-Saga. This is the paradise of naturalists and bird-watchers.
Stokkseyri - Árborg The small village Stokkseyri is renowned for its beautiful seashore, breaking waves and birdlife. Rich handcraft and cultural life is held in high esteem in Stokkseyri. Workshops and galleries, Ghost Center and the Elves, Trolls and Northern Lights Museum are all situated in a Cultural Center, - an old fish processing factory that has found a new role due to changes in the fishing industry. The Hunting Museum keeps a large collection of mounted animals and firearms and the bunkhouse Þuríðarbúð shows an excellent example of how fishermen had to make use of what nature provided. Stokkseyri also offers a splendid seafood restaurant, an outdoor swimming pool, kayak sailing tours, a family recreation park with animals and a camping site. Further east from Stokkseyri is the Knarrarósviti lighthouse, whose architectural design is an interesting blend of functionalism and art nouveau.

Laugarvatn - Bláskógabyggð
Flúðir - Hrunamannahreppur
Laugarvatn is a shallow lake, about 2 square km in size, and is located in the uplands of Árnessýsla, midway between Thingvellir, Gullfoss and Geysir, 100 km from Reykjavík. Under its floor there are hot springs which heat the lake so that it is warm and suitable for bathing all year round. On its bank is a village of over 300 inhabitants, also named Laugarvatn. The Laugarvatnsfjall Mountain with its birch-covered slopes on the west both shelters the village and adds to the charm and beauty of the place. Between the mountain and the lake, north of the village, there is a panoramic point (Hringsjá) from which there is good view over the lake and its surroundings. In addition, amongst the green hills and woods north of the lake the area is suitable for camping, pony-trekking and hiking. Nearby you will find a lot of marked hiking routes. There are possibilities to hire a boat or a sailboard to use at lake Laugarvatn. Just outside Laugarvatn there is a golf course and the possibilities of angling in waters and rivers in the area. it is known as a popular tourist resort in Iceland, and also as the site for educational institutions like the secondary grammar school of Laugarvatn. There are two Edda Hotels located here as well.
Flúðir is a rapidly growing community in the center of Hrunamannahreppur district, about 25 minutes off the main Ring Road. The area is considered to be very fertile and beautiful. Litla-Laxá (Little Salmon River), a clear spring river runs through the village in an attractive basin. Miðfell, a small mountain towers over Flúðir, and gives the surrounding area a distinctive look. Good walking and riding paths lie to the top of Miðfell. There you can find an impressive lake and from the top is a great view over the area. The main sources of employment in Flúðir are services, industry and horticulture. Geothermal heat is utilized for greenhouses, and here is the biggest mushroom factory in Iceland. The surrounding area is a popular location for summerhouses. Flúðir has excellent services available for visitors. Among those offered are a grocery store, restaurant, swimming pool, accommodation in three star Icelandair Hotel Fluðir, camping ground, information center, golf course, horse rental, bank, post office and a small airfield. A folk museum is at the farm Gröf.

Ásahreppur
Hella – Rangárþing ytra
Ásahreppur is a community on west edge of Rangárvallasýsla, which has taken its name from “the ásar” ridges in the nature. In the area of Ásahreppur there are many, artifical caves, used as animal houses up to the 20th centure but in the first centures after the time of Iclandic settlement, used as human residence. Schools and other basic service to the inhabitants of Ásahreppur, is driven in good cooporation with their neighbour communitys in Rangárvallasýsla, Skaftárhreppur and Mýrdalshreppur.
Inhabitants in Western Rangárþing (Rangárþing ytra) are 1604. The borders of the district are by Ásahreppur district, from the river Þjórsá in the west, to the glacier Vatnajökull in the north. The south borders are from the glacier Mýrdalsjökull to the river Eystri-Rangá. In Rangárþing ytra are extensive agricultural productions. In the area you can find many well known nature resources and historical places for example Hekla, Landmannalaugar and the sagatrail of Njáls saga. Vík - Mýrdalshreppur
www.south.is
The natural beauty of the area is spectacular. There are many places of interest in the vicinity of Vík. Just east of the village’s outskirts lies one of Europe’s biggest arctic tern breeding grounds. South of Vík is a beautiful beach, which the international ISLANDS Magazine named one of the world’s ten best island beaches in 1991. A short hike within the close vicinity of Vík is sure to satisfy all serious nature lovers and bird watchers. To the south of Reynisfjall Mountain, a spectacular set of rock columns called Reynisdrangar rise majestically out of the Atlantic Ocean. Dyrhólaey, where the unique rock arch is found, is a 120-m-high promontory in the western part of the Mýrdalur district. Dyrhólaey is Iceland’s most southerly tip. North of Vík rises the bulk of the 700 km2 Mýrdalsjökull glacier, Iceland’s fourth largest. Approximately 600 meters below the ice lies the dormant sub-glacial volcano Katla. Katla is one of Iceland’s most active volcanoes, and has on average erupted twice a century, the last occasion being in 1918. Vík has good travel services and offers plenty of camping and hotel space (one Edda Hotel is found here). Among the many aspects of Vík that make it attractive to tourists are sight-seeing flights; snowmobile trips, ice-climbing and dogsledding on the Mýrdalsjökull glacier; excellent salmon and trout fishing; horseback riding, a wool center, a fish farm/retail outlet of smoked salmon (arctic char in Fagridalur) to list a few. Few other places in Iceland offer as many contrasts of nature as Mýrdalur. The area is therefore an ideal place to visit for those travelers who want to enjoy good travel services and the best of what the country’s natural environment has to offer.
Vík is Iceland’s most southerly village. Although this community of 500 inhabitants faces the open Atlantic, Vík is the only seaside settlement in Iceland left without a harbor due to natural circumstances. The average precipitation in Vik is the highest in all of Iceland - which of course means that there is a lot of rain, snow, wind, sleet, hail and fog here. This is however not always the case as the weather here changes very rapidly, the sun comes back out, and therefore rainbows are probably more frequent (and vivid) here than anywhere else in the world. 24

Skaftárhreppur
Kirkjubæjarklaustur - Skaftárhreppur
Did you know that in London 476.100 people have to share each 100 km2? If you want something different, how about visiting Skaftárhreppur, where the same amount of land is shared by only 7 people? We offer you our services in local farms and in the village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur. Here you will find some of Iceland´s natural treasures, Eldgjá, Langisjór and Lakagígar, to name only a few. It´s an area where earth and people have been shaped by fire, wind and water. Skaftárhreppur is a gateway to the southeast and a part of Vatnajökull National Park. It´s the place to be when you´re in your element.
Kirkjubæjarklaustur was known in olden times as “Kirkjubær” (Church Farm) and was an important farming estate. It is one of the most tonguetwisting words to pronounce of any location in Iceland. Kirkjubæjarklaustur has developed into a village, the only centre of population in the district, with about 150 inhabitants. Kirkjubæjarklaustur, often abbreviated to “Klaustur”, is centrally located in the district. Roads radiate from Kirkjubæjarklaustur in many different directions: the Ring Road (No. 1) runs through the district. The Laki road, just west of Kirkjubæjarklaustur, leads into the highlands. The circular Landbrot / Meðalland road serves the southern part of the district. The Fjallabak roads (north and south) lead from the Ring Road into the interior via Skaftártunga. The Álftaver road is a circular route serving Álftaver on Mýrdalssandur. Kirkjubæjarklaustur is the only place between Vik and Höfn which offers services including a fuel station, bank, post office and supermarket. Nearby tourist attractions include the Laki craters, the Eldgjá and Skaftafell National Park. An attraction close to the village is Kirkjugólf (Churchfloor), a natural pavement of basalt. These are basalt columns in the earth eroded and shaped by wind and waves, but only the top can be seen, and, as the name suggests, have the appearance of a paved church floor. It is a protected natural monument. This lava formation has similar origins to the Giant’s Causeway in Ireland. All these attractions contribute to Kirkjubaejarklaustur being a very popular stopping point for tourists.

VATNAJÖKULL REGION THE CLUSTER
Höfn - Hornafjörður
Vatnajökull region ehf, is a group of companies formed with the support of the South East Innovation Center. It incorporates not only travel companies but also cultural and food processing enterprises. Our goal is to entwine the operations of the 80 different companies who are part of this project. The region as a whole is marketed under one brand whose logo is WOW with the emphasis on locally produced agricultural goods, culinary souvenirs that can be traced directly to the region, handicrafts and other souvenirs. In this region, like in other areas of the country, many farmers have abandoned traditional farming in favor of earning a living from travel services, although many still farm their lands and also service tourists with bed and breakfast accommodation. The emphasis in marketing is the winter time. The inhabitants of the region do not only live in proximity of the Vatnajökull glacier but also to the sea. The region is therefore known to be one of the finest places for seafood—especially for the Icelandic langoustine—as fishing has always been an important industry in Hornafjördur. In addition to its famous and healthy cuisine, the clean and unspoiled nature is a hallmark of the Vatnajökull region. Here in the realm of Vatnajökull National park and the biggest glacier in the world outside the artics, we believe that there is no boundary to what we can achieve if we work together.
Hornafjörður is a blooming community in the realm of the greatest glacier in Europe, Vatnajokull in South-East part of Iceland. The district’s most populated area is Höfn. In this region you are located at the base of Vatnajökull, and the scenery is breathtaking. Skaftafell National Park, the largest National Park in Europe, is situated in the community. Last years tourism has grown enourmously and in fact become a major economic sector in the community. Diverse services are provided, including hotels, camping sites, restaurants, shops, swimming pools, golf course, marked hiking trails and various museums such as folk museum, maritimal-museum, a glacier exchibition and the centre of Þórbergur Þórðason (a major figure in Icelandic literature). Höfn’s growth in the 20th century from a small village to today’s town resulted from the developm ent of a relatively diverse fishing industry. The landed catch is now more varied than in other fishing towns, including high-value species such as the Langoustine, small lobster (Nephrops norvegicus), but a good part of the Icelandic langoustine catch is landed at Höfn and the town sometimes referred to as the lobster capital of the notht. In recent years the thow has promoted lobster as a central part of its image, for instance with a “lobster festival” being held each summer. Höfn actually means harbour, though repeated dredging has proved necessary to keep the entrance safe from sand deposits. Höfn has varius restaurants and all serve the famous lobster on the manu, and in Höfn you find a new beautiful swimming pool with remarkable view.

Þingvellir At Thingvellir the Althing (national assembly) was established around 930 and continued to convene there until 1798. Many crucial events in Icelandic history took place at Thingvellir and it is at the heart of Icelandic nationhood. No less remarkable is the geology of Thingvellir. Visitors can get interpretation on the history and nature of Thingvellir and find hiking trails and camping grounds. Thingvellir is Iceland‘s oldest National Park and now on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Kerið Location: Kerið is beside the road from Sog to Reykholt, north of Hvítá. A 55 m deep volcanic crater, about 3000 years old. It is a part of a group of volcanic hills called Tjarnarhólar and it is now filled with water.
Þjórsárdalur Location: Þjórsárdalur is beside Þjórsá, north of Árnes. Thjórsárdalur valley was the site of a flourishing Settlement Age community that was later abandoned and then disappeared under ash in 1104, when the volcano Mount Hekla erupted for the first time in the history of Iceland. Stöng and The saga-Age Farm Sites of about 40 buildings have been unearthed in Thjórsárdalur valley and the best preserved and most remarkable is the farmhouse at Stöng excavated in 1939. Based upon the Stöng farmhouse a replica Saga-Age farmhouse was built in 1974 to mark the 1100 anniversary of the settlement of Iceland. The replica farmhouse stands at the mount of the valley, together with a replica of an early church. Open to public all summer.

Geysir
Kerlingarfjöll
Geysir has lent its name to the English language in order to christen the phenomenon of the periodically spouting hot springs. You can walk around the Geysir area, a geothermal field where hot springs are in abundance, geysers explode and pools of mud bubble. Strokkur, gives a performance every few minutes, shooting a tower of water and steam 30 meters into the air and Blesi with water the colour of turquoise delights the senses.
Location: East from the road Kjalvegur, between Langjökull and Hofsjökull. Kerlingarfjöll Mountain Park a natural playground where towering mountains rushing rivers, volcanic deserts and jagged canyons give way to brooding lava fields and craggy mountains cut by startingly green valleys. And just when you least expect it, the stunning natural contrasts of ice and fire burst to the surface in a welter of flashing colours.
Kjalvegur „Keel road“ Gullfoss - the golden falls Gullfoss is actually two separate waterfalls, the upper one has a drop of 11 metres and the lower one 21 metres. The rock of the river bed was formed during an interglacial period. For thousands of years the river has followed its coarse delighting tourists with baeuty and power.

Skógafoss
Pompei of the North
One of Iceland‘s most splendid waterfalls, Skógafoss tumbles 60 metres from the cliffs by Skógar. Before cascading off the cliffs as Skógafoss, the river flows through the Skógárgil gorge, which boasts more than twenty more waterfalls, each with its own charm.
More than 30 years have passed since the volcanic eruption in Vestmannaeyjar and the memories and signs of that spectacular natural fury are somewhat fading, but the lava and ash of the eruption silently covers almost 400 homes and buildings, a third of the town in 1973. “Pompei of the North” is the name given to the project to excavate some of these homes. Its objective is to give visitors the opportunity to see with their own eyes what actually happened in 1973. Here is a unique, modern archeology dig that cannot be compared to anything else. The plan is to excavate 7-10 houses that were covered by ash. The project was started during the last part of June 2005. It is a carefully planned and ambitious task that is expected to take several years. The house that stood at Suðurvegur 25 can already be seen and the next step is to continue excavating down the street of Suðurvegur. The object is, that in time, a small village will rise out of the ash and those that see it will be able to more easily comprehend the extent of devastation that a volcanic eruption can cause. This excavation should largely influence the interest of visitors to come to Vestmannaeyjar. The excavation of “Pompei of the North” will be a special experience every step of the way up Suðurvegur.
Heimaklettur The highest rock formation in the Westman islands. Its highest peak is no more than 283 meters, not demanding too much of your valuable time. Neither does it demand arduous climbing as ladders have been placed in the most difficult areas. And the view from the top is magnificent, whichever direction you prefer.
Stórhöfði Drive to the top of Stórhöfði, in the Westman islands, the windiest place in Iceland and possibly the whole of Europe, where four calm days are the limit in an average year and wind speed can pass 30 m/sec. Needless to say the view is fabulous.

Mýrdalsjökull Mýrdalsjökul‘s peak reaches 1493m and Katla Volcano inside the glacier erupts on average every 40-60 years. Sixteen eruptions have been recorded since the settlement of Iceland over 1100 years ago, the last in 1918.
Dyrhólaey Sheer headland rising 120m out of the sea with a huge natural arch near Vík í Mýrdal. Reynisdrangur Sea Stacks, Eldhraun Lava Fields and Mýrdalssandur Sands. An amazing area of strength and beauty.
Lakagígar Lakagígar (Laki Craters) lie in a row, 25 km in length, in Síðumannaafréttur. The craters stretch from the tuff mountain Hnúta to the northeast through Mt. Laki (818 m above sea level), ending at Vatnajökull. Mt Laki commands splendid views of the craters and the surrounding landscape. Lakagígar are a part of Vatnajökull National Park, The largest National Park in Europe. In 1783, a huge lava flow streamed from Lakagígar in what became known as the “Skaftá Fires.” This is believed to have been one of the greatest lava flows in a single eruption in the history of the world: the molten lava filled the gorges through which the Skaftá and Hverfisfljót rivers flowed, and swept down in two branches into inhabited areas,to spread over the lowlands where it laid waste many farms. The eruption produced large quantities of volcanic ash. For residents of the region, and Iceland as a whole, the results of the eruption were catastrophic: this time is known as “Móðuharðindin” (the Haze Famine).

Eldgjá
Langisjór
In Skaftártunguafréttur, in West-Skaftafellssýsla, close to Kirkjubæjar klaustur, the eruptive fissure Eldgjá is to be found. Eldgjá is an approx. 40 km long eruptive fissure, approx. 600 meters wide in many places, and up to 200 meters deep. When it was formed, probably around 934, there were likely eruptions along the whole extent of it. The fissure is believed to extend from Mýrdalsjökull glacier, to the east towards the lake Lambavatn, which is just west of Laki. From Eldgjá, extensive streams of lava have flowed through Landbrot and Meðalland, reaching sea at Alviðruhamrar in Álftaver. The lava-field is believed to cover 700 km², which makes it one of the vastest lava-fields on earth since the last ice age. Eldgjá is believed to belong to the same crater system as Katla. Eldgjá is a unique natural phenomenon and is listed as natural remnants. Plans to make Eldgjá and its surrounding area a part of Vatnajökull National Park are in place.
Langisjór is a lake that’s 20 km long and 2 km wide in some places. The lake is to the southwest of Vatnajökull, between the mountains Tungnárfjöll and Fögrufjöll, in a beautiful and picturesque landscape. Its square measure is 27 km², it reaches a depth of 75 m and the water surface is 670 m above sea level. The view of mountains at the lake is magnificent, to the south of Langisjór is Sveinstindur and to the east Fögrufjöll. The mountains reach Langisjór at many places with abrupt cliffs. The lake is among the purest mountain lakes in Iceland. There are many islands on the lake and the landscape is spectacular.

Vatnajökull National Park - Europe’s largest The national park includes the ice cap and its surroundings, with a total area of 13,600 km2, or 13% of Iceland. Few places in the world exhibit such a wide range of natural phenomena. The battle between ice and fire still rages within park boundaries. Much of Southeast Iceland lies within the realm of the park, giving quick access to the glacier. Vatnajökull - the world’s biggest glacier outside of the Arctic regions The glacier seems so close to the people of Southeast Iceland that they sometimes refer to the ice as if it were part of their backyard. Each of the icefalls and glacier tongues flowing towards the lowlands possesses an individual character and offers a variety of scenes.
Skaftafell Öræfi was Iceland’s most isolated district, before the bridges to the west of it were completed in the early seventies. The natural contrasts are breathtaking: black sands below white glaciers, desolate wastes and green vegetation. Such a green oasis welcomes you at Skaftafell, just beside the broad desert of the Skeiðarársandur sands and the raging Skeiðará river. These contrasts and many more remind the visitor of nature’s changeability.
Öræfajökull Extending south from the Vatnajökull ice cap and towering to 2115 m, Öræfajökull is Iceland’s highest mountain. Its height actually depends on the season and the depth of snow, since the peak itself, Hvannadalshnúkur, is topped by ice which is thickest in spring and thinnest in autumn. The mountain and its vicinity are very popular among hikers and skiers.

Ingólfshöfði
Black sand beaches and bars
At the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, Ingólfshöfði is a headland which is isolated by black sands and perilous rivers from the rest of the mainland. However, it is home to thousands of nesting seabirds, especially puffins and the great skua. This historical cape is named after the first settler of Iceland, Ingólfur Arnarson, who spent his first winter here with his family after moving to Iceland, 874-875.
The glacier grinds off the bedrock below it, which generally consists of dark-grey basalt. Glacier rivers carry much of this material to the sea, where the waves, but also currents and winds to a lesser extent, spread and pile it up in complicated, scenic ways. Such basalt particles have formed a unique beach on the shore of Hornafjörður, with more dark sand stretching far to the west.
Glacial lagoon
Haukafell
The size of the main lagoon, called Jökulsárlón, is about 20 square kilometres. In 1932 the same area was still covered by ice. Then the glacier started retreating, so that today up to 100 metres of ice break off from it every year and are still forming this internationally unique lagoon. Since the lagoon is open to the sea, it contains 50% salt water and 50% fresh water. Many species of fish are found here, as well as seals, which can number into the hundreds during winter.
In 1985 the local Forestry Society started planting saplings at Haukafell. Not only are the trees now becoming established, but there are bountiful berries to be picked every August. This pleasant outdoor spot also has a good campsite and washing facilities.
Fláajökull This is one of the many outlet glaciers flowing south from Vatnajökull ice cap. Access to such ice tongues varies, and crevices make the ice dangerous to walk on without a guide. Moving about a metre a day, these tongues play a central role in shaping the landscape. Fláajökull has retreated over two kilometres in the past century. A lagoon has now collected behind an embankment; this you can drive along to its east end, from where a marked trail will lead you to the ice.

Heinaberg
Hoffell
The Heinaberg area is part of the national park, and offers interesting sets of basalt columns in addition to the glacier tongue Heinabergsjökull and the lagoon. The valley Heinabergsdalur, 7 km long, reaches to Vatnsdalur valley, which ice used to dam off and keep full of water. Nowadays, the view down into the valley is magnificent, since massive icebergs are often left stranded along its floor.
Driving or hiking along the sands of Hoffellssandur, you reach the ice of Hoffellsjökull. On your way to the glacier, while enjoying the scenery where earlier glaciers carved out the mountain slopes, note the borehole that has brought up geothermal water. You will find numerous hiking trails starting by the gabbro mountain named Geitafell, at the edge of the glacier. Hoffell is in the national park.
Lónsöræfi / Stafafellsfjöll The Stafafellsfjöll mountains, today also called Lónsöræfi, dominate the skyline east of Vatnajökull glacier and have long included one of Iceland’s most extensive protected areas. Besides the deep, rugged canyons, the landscape displays a wide range of colours due to rhyolite and other attractive rocks. In contrast, there are lushly vegetated, sheltered valleys, and a good chance of spotting reindeer. The numerous trails make this a perfect hiking territory.
Wildlife Reindeer roam wild through the realm of Vatnajökull. While mostly keeping to the mountains in summer, in winter they migrate to the lowlands, and can often be enjoyed from car windows along the roads. Be sure to drive carefully in order not to hit one, especially after dark. The Vatnajökull realm is also rich in birds, particularly since Southeast Iceland is their first point of arrival as they migrate from elsewhere in Europe to breed in their Icelandic homes or even farther north. Large groups can also be observed here as they gather to fly back south every autumn.
