Stamford’s stone heritage has drawn accolades back through time – and tourists from far and wide.
ts unique blend of history, niche shopping, stunning architecture and an over-riding sense of community even won the supreme compliment from the Sunday Times Newspaper as ‘Britain’s Top Place to Live’. With over 600 listed buildings of mellow limestone, the UK’s first conservation town is the perfect setting for Stamford’s Georgian Festival, first held with huge success in 2013 and scheduled to take place again from September 25-27 2015. Stamford is unusual in having whole streets entirely made up of Georgian houses, yet vibrant with modern life. Visit Grantham
Mentioned as a Royal Manor in the Domesday Book, Grantham has developed hugely since the days when it was known as a stopping place for kings and nobleman. The Angel and Royal Hotel, originally a court of King John, still takes pride of place in the High Street but over the years the town has expanded and developed and is now home to many shops, indoor shopping centres and a bustling Saturday street market.

here’s also a whole host of dining experiences from Harry’s Place (just outside the town and voted 8th in the Sunday Times’ Top 100 Restaurants) to Bombay Brasserie, a winner in the East Midlands Food Awards best Indian category - as well as a wide range of other top quality restaurants to suit all tastes. With a population of over 40,000, the town has managed to retain its character but also move with the times. At the heart of Grantham is the parish church of St Wulfram’s with its soaring 282ft spire – one of the most important town churches in England – and the Guildhall houses a lively arts centre and tourist information centre. It is also known as a town of firsts; Britain’s first woman Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, was born in the town and Edith Smith, the country’s first policewoman, served here. Grantham has a wonderful choice of places to visit as well as a selection of splendid parks and open spaces for people to spend their leisure time.

Bourne today is known worldwide for its motor racing connections but its roots go back to the Roman invasion.
T
he red brick town at the foot of the limestone hills of Kesteven owes its origin to the Roman road upon which it was built – and its name to its fine quality water. Bourne (or Bourn, as it was originally known) comes from the Anglo Saxon meaning water or stream. It is the place where English Racing Automobiles (ERA) and British Racing Motors (BRM) racing cars were built, and Pilbeam Racing and Hall and Hall are today carrying on a proud tradition. Its other claim to fame is as the

birthplace of both Hereward the Wake, leader of the local resistance to the Norman Conquest of England, and Charles Worth, the man widely considered as the father of haute couture, an English fashion designer of the 19th century, whose works were produced in Paris. The Red Hall, a fine Elizabethan mansion, stands near the centre of the town, and the Abbey Church of St Peter and St Paul, founded in 1138, is one of the oldest buildings in Bourne.

Visit The Deepings Market Deeping and Deeping St James, including West Deeping and Langtoft. Nestling beside the River Welland on the southern borders of South Kesteven, sits the town of Market Deeping and the villages of Deeping St James, West Deeping and Langtoft.

ammoth elephants and woolly rhinoceros once roamed the low-lying land which is collectively known as The Deepings – a Saxon name meaning deep places. Now the area is home to fine 17th century stone houses but with all the trappings of modern day life. Market Deeping, with a population of about 14,000, has definitely left behind its pre-historic roots offering a unique combination of the traditional and the forward thinking.

Considered to be in one of best districts to live, according to a Halifax Quality of Life survey, the area has developed significantly over the years, attracting major and new businesses while still acting as an important service centre. Attractions include the triangular market place featuring fine stone buildings and former coaching inns, and the 13th Century church of St. Guthlac, with two sundials on the tower. There is also a great selection of shops and cafes on offer, or simply enjoy a stroll along the River Welland.

utland has two market towns, Oakham and Uppingham and lots of pretty villages to explore. It is a wonderful place for walking with miles of tranquil footpaths to discover, passing through tiny picturesque villages and glorious countryside with uninterrupted views. The Rutland Round is a well known and popular long distance walking route in Rutland, covering a 65-mile circular route. Rutland is packed with historic buildings, many of which have been beautifully preserved.

There are a number of very attractive churches in the county, each with interesting features and fascinating histories. One of the most exhilarating ways to explore Rutland is by bike, and there are routes to suit everyone. Rutland Water offers the leisure cyclist some of the best views of both the reservoir and the Hambleton Peninsular from its waterside tracks which circle the shoreline - plus sailing and bird watching for its famous ospreys. One of the best known and loved landmarks of Rutland is Normanton Church on the shore.

How to get here By Road The A1 main trunk road from London to Edinburgh passes close to Stamford and Grantham. From the M1, leave at junction 25 and take the A52 from Derby to Grantham or leave at junction 21 and take the A46/607 from Leicester via Melton to Grantham. Stamford is approximately 20 miles south of Grantham via the A1.
By Rail Grantham is just over an hour direct from London’s Kings Cross, and 35 minutes direct from Nottingham. There is a connecting train from Peterborough or Leicester to Stamford.
