Feast of Entertainment Georgian colour, spectacle and heritage make Stamford’s third Georgian Festival (21-24 September) an unmissable weekend. Organisers South Kesteven District Council confirm a return of popular highlights from 2015, including the sell-out Georgian Costume Ball, historic venues such as the Town Hall opening their doors, street markets and an outdoor re-enactment of the town’s bloody Bull Run tradition. Horses and a vintage carriage will again deliver unforgettable rides through the town’s ancient streets and the historic Meadows area will host military encampments and period stallholders. Stamford’s Georgian heritage will come to life with a talk by Amanda Vickery, English historian, writer, radio and television presenter, one of a programme of talks set to enthrall and inform. New on the programme is Mad Science - with a Georgian twist - bringing kids the fun, the amazement and the wonder of all things science to The Corn Exchange for school and family shows.

t’s a memorable year for picturesque and ancient Stamford – 50 years since it became the first conservation town in the country. 2017 gives the mellow limestone town particular reason to celebrate, and extra impetus for the autumn’s Georgian Festival (21-24 September). It will be the third such festival organised by South Kesteven District Council, building on two superb events crammed with colour, spectacle, markets, military re-enactments and costume with historic venues opening their doors to host events. Stamford, boasts over 600-plus listed limestone buildings, is the perfect festival backdrop with a stone heritage which has drawn accolades over the years, and tourists from far and wide. Visitors sense the modern vibrancy and community spirit which won the national accolade of Britain’s best place to live

Unchanged stone and cobbled streets, narrow alleyways and hidden courtyards reveal niche shops, tea rooms, eateries, designer boutiques and a bustling Friday market with a Farmers Market every fortnight. Stamford’s busy Tourist Information Centre sits within the Arts Centre on St Mary’s Street - built in 1768 and one of the oldest provincial theatres in England - with accommodation information, town guides, local walks and valuable advice. Follow the Town Trail along streets that once echoed to one of England’s bloodiest customs - the Stamford Bull Run - or relax on water meadows beside the winding River Welland. Ancient 15th century almhouses at Browne’s Hospital are open during the summer and Melbourn Brothers’ All Saints Brewery combines antiquity with a decent tipple.

Grantham a town of genius and firsts
F
rom ancient coaching inns to celebrated home town status for world leaders in their fields, Grantham has tempting credentials and a host of reasons to visit. Sir Isaac Newton, born just south of Grantham at Woolsthorpe Manor, inspires a biennial Gravity Fields Festival which offers a mix of science, arts, heritage, outdoor events and sheer spectacle. It’s an event that drew an audience of 68,000 to the town in 2016, with a host of eminent patrons, speakers and world class arts entertainment. Woolsthorpe Manor staged a mini festival at the same time to celebrate the ‘Year of Wonders’ as visitors and the scientific community marked the 350th anniversary of Newton’s law of gravitational forces – prompted by the falling apple at his birthplace. Grantham Museum has a permanent exhibition dedicated to one of the town’s

most famous daughters and the country’s first woman Prime Minister – Margaret Thatcher. There is also a reminder of Edith Smith, the first woman police constable in England given full powers of arrest in 1915. Mentioned as a Royal Manor in the Domesday Book, Grantham has come a long way since the days when it was recognised as a stopping place for kings and nobleman. The Angel and Royal Hotel, originally a court of King John, still welcomes visitors to its High Street location, adding to Grantham’s wealth of hotel accommodation in and around the town. Trains on the direct east coast rail line to London are operated by Virgin and Hull Trains, bringing Grantham to within an hour’s travel from London. The town’s parish church of St Wulfram’s boasts a soaring 282ft spire – one of the most important town churches in England. Grantham’s cafe culture goes from strength to strength, with specialist cafe’s vying for trade alongside restaurants from award wining Harry’s Place, one of the smallest dining experiences with a Michelin rating in the UK, to eating places for every palate. A bustling Saturday street market serves a growing population of over 40,000, with Grantham’s growth agenda now delivering results with work well under way on the southern relief road to compliment its first class road links. Bourne
A market town with ancient roots

nown worldwide as the birthplace of motor racing, home of both English Racing Automobiles and British Racing Motors, Bourne today is a thriving market town with a charm of its own. Its Heritage Museum is a popular visitor attraction in Baldock’s Mill, Bourne’s only remaining mill of the three listed in the Domesday Book, complete with its new mill wheels. It’s where local history comes to life, from the water and railway industries to agriculture, wartime memorabilia and Raymond Mays, Bourne’s most famous racing driver. It celebrates a motor racing heritage that saw Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart at the wheel of Bourne-manufactured Formula 1 cars. Modern Bourne welcomes visitors to that rare commodity – free parking. Significant regeneration has added a spring to its step, with independent shops and a traditional market on Thursdays. Its name comes from the Anglo Saxon meaning water or stream and it has been a thoroughfare since the times of the Romans. It is reputedly the birthplace of both Hereward the Wake, leader of the local resistance to the Norman Conquest of England, and Charles Worth, widely considered as the father of haute couture. Renowned for its open spaces, parks and woodland and with 71 listed buildings, Bourne has a pleasant setting with attractive countryside and villages to visit. Close to Bourne is one of the best walking areas in the district – Bourne Wood – a Forestry Commission-owned remnant of the

wild wood that cloaked England after the last ice age with miles of accessible well-marked tracks and a large picnic area. Don’t miss Grimsthorpe Castle to the west, open from April to September. Built in 1540 for a visit by Henry Vlll, it has magnificent state rooms with collections, tapestries and paintings, 3000 acres of landscaped parkland, gardens, adventure playground, cycle trail and hire shop.

ngland’s smallest county offers a perfect escape, with its charming market towns, delightful villages and the watery expanse of Rutland Water. Whether it is walking, cycling, sailing, bird watching, exploring or just relaxing, Rutland has a tempting array of options for visitors. Oakham and Uppingham are Rutland’s two towns, each with its own charm, markets and a host of niche shops and restaurants. Rutland Water is one of the largest man made lakes in Europe. Lyndon’s nature reserve and visitor centre is the best place to hear more about its successful osprey breeding programme and there is a bird watching centre at Egleton. Walkers and cyclists will find miles of accessible waterside routes and those seeking longer distance can tackle the Rutland Round, a 65 - mile route taking in Oakham, Uppingham, Eyebrook Reservoir, Ketton, Empingham and Thistleton.

It gives South Kesteven a chance to hark back to when Grantham was thronged with American troops rubbing shoulders with allied coalition forces in the 1944 build up to D-Day.
Wartime legacy is everywhere. Stamford’s Town Hall displays a Wilkinson Sword, commemorated to mark the Battle of Britain and RAF Woolfox Lodge to the east of the Al contributed to Operation Glimmer as a major D-Day deception operation.
The 9th Air Force Troop Carrier Command were operational from airfields at Fulbeck, Folkingham, Barkston Heath and RAFNorth Witham, transporting British and allied troops. The invasion of Europe is considered to have started the moment the wheels of the first C47 Dakota aircraft took off late on June 5 from USAAF Station 479 (North Witham) - today known as Twyford Wood near Colsterworth. Each of the 20 aircraft was carrying elite American Pathfinder troops to parachute behind enemy lines and lay radio beacons to guide in the main offensive. General Dwight Eisenhower waved them off, and co-ordinated the allied air offensive from St Vincent’s in Grantham. A year

How to get here By Road The A1 main trunk road from London to Edinburgh passes close to Stamford and Grantham. From the M1, leave at junction 25 and take the A52 from Derby to Grantham or leave at junction 21 and take the A46/607 from Leicester via Melton to Grantham. Stamford is approximately 20 miles south of Grantham via the A1.
