THE RIGHT THING

It's really good to see you all again. Or, I should say, it's really good to have you all see us again. We've been on a bit of a hiatus lately. After eight wonderful years of creating the best magazine we knew how to, it was time to peek under the hood and do a thorough rebuild. You see, those eight wonderful years just also happened to include some fairly turbulent ones—for all of you, the nation, and for us at South. While we were motoring along, working furiously to produce this magazine, PUBLISHER MICHAEL BROOKS there wasn't much time to do the required AND HIS WIFE FRANKIE WITH LOIS WOOTEN maintenance. When we faced an obstacle— AT THE 2014 SCAD GALA. and as it's been f or all small businesses, there were many—we figured out how to swerve around it or we drove right over it. It was fun—exhilarating, even. But we knew it would exact some serious wear and tear. So the time had come to address it. Of course, that decision didn't come easily. Restructuring would not come without pain. Fortunately, I was blessed with some much-needed positive reinforcement at just the right time. My wife and I decided to attend the SCAD Gala 2014. It was the fir t industry event we had attended in a quite some time, being that just about all of my time had been sucked into the revamp. It was there that I was reminded by Mrs. Lois Wooten, a longtime friend and subscriber to South, of how important it was to produce a product that we would be proud of and not to just work towards a publishing deadline. Lois is treasure to her family and this region. That night, as I was still wrestling with the consequences of the rebuild, she was certainly a treasure to me. I knew we had done the right thing. So, for months we've been working away making South better than ever. You'll notice some nice changes in this issue, but there's much more to come in our next, South's 50th issue, coming in May. And while we were improving your experience on the pages of South, we also got underway on a brand new digital experience because Lois, and all of you, deserve nothing less. A new South is getting ready to roll out of the shop. And she's a beauty. As always, I love to hear your thoughts about how we're doing because it's you, our reader, for whom we spend countless hours creating South. Many thanks and keep reading,

editor’s letter

As a lif el ong world tra veler, outdoor ad venturer, and business leader, I ha ve at last settled down in the South again near my family and close friends. I find that every day in Savannah and the creative coastal region presents the opportunity to feel like we are on a permanent vacation. Because our region is so rich with creative people, environmental wonders, and rich architectural and literary history, alternative adventures come into play. EDITOR PAULA S. FOGARTY AND PETER BAHOUTH. So many of us are drawn in by media personalities and celebrities, but few of us take the time to recognize the unsung heroes who have made their life’s work out of saving the planet. Peter Bahouth, a Georgia-based environmentalist, is a constant world traveler as director of the U.S. Climate Action Network, yet he shared with me the wisdom of finding escape in our own backyards. Bahouth's magical network of tree houses around his midtown Atlanta home keep him connected to nature. He also shared finding escape through art as he revives the amazing art of 3-D photography. His mind-blowing photography gives viewers the opportunity to take visual trips and to contemplate the miracle of human vision. Adventure can take on many f orms. I am happy to introduce you to a Savannah River-based journey with the dynamic duo of Robert Morris, Director of Communications for the Georgia Ports Authority, and Charles Ellis, a 5th generation Savannahian who has been scavenging the treasures—some ancient, some new—of the river’s shore. This Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn-like cruise is something any of us can enjoy and bring home inspirations as well as artifacts. Their exhibition at the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum gives a visual depiction of the many stories that are churned up by the Savannah River. Our travel guide to the top destinations in the Southeast opens with Savannah at the top of the list. The Hostess City welcomed over 12.1 million visitors in 2013—that is about three times the number hosted by Charleston. As the fir t pre-planned city in America, Savannah is home to the nation’s f ourth largest port, yet it maintains the feeling of an intimate, collegial town. General James Edward Oglethorpe’s 18th-century vision for the city plan, with strategically placed squares and trees as integral parts of the plan, makes Savannah feel like the setting for an ongoing garden party. Some of our favorite city destinations, such as Charleston, Jacksonville, Greenville, and Asheville, are called to your attention along with our dense population of coastal islands, including Tybee and Cumberland islands. As we shed our coats and jump into spring, go, see, explore, learn, play, laugh, eat, drink, and enjoy all the magical pleasures of our region.

SCAD GALA âœą FEBRUARY 1, 2014 Savannah is home to one of the top creative art schools in the entire world. Savannah College of Art and Design alumni, professors and students know it and attended the Scholarship Gala on February 1, which helped to raise money for the artistic talent that the school produces each year. Attendees were treated to an evening of entertainment, silent auction and a chance to meet artists and leaders of the community. All proceeds supported the SCAD Scholarship Endowment Fund.
