There are several churches in Savannah that welcome brides and grooms and have some incredible histories.

THE UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST CHURCH located on Troupe Square with its beautifully appointed sanctuary is known as the Jingle Bell Church.

History has it that the organist/choir director James Pierpont Jr. wrote the popular Christmas song “Jingle Bells” during his service at the church.

THE HISTORIC LUTHERAN CHURCH OF ASCENSION, which is noted as one of Savannah's most familiar landmarks, sits on Wright Square. The stained glass

WHITEFIELD CHAPEL AT BETHESDA SCHOOL OF BOYS Outside Savannah's historic district is a cozy, historic chapel that is breathtaking inside and out. Its quaint chapel is perfect for smaller weddings, and has exquisite white-washed benches and iron chandeliers. There's no question why it's a popular chapel with brides!

Most all churches, especially the historic ones, have strict guidelines for using their sanctuary. Always ask for a copy of the church guidelines to review these restrictions.

TELFAIR SQUARE This square has beautiful grounds and is located adjacent to the Telfair and Jepson Museum venues. While closer to Broughton, it offers a serene setting for the perfect wedding.

LAFAYETTE SQUARE If you can’t have your wedding inside the famed Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist, Lafayette Square is right nextdoor. Use the Cathedral as background to your photos for a quintessential Savannah look.

COLUMBIA SQUARE Located in a more residential area, this square is quieter and more peaceful than many of the others. Columbia Square also boasts an exquisite fountain and is located adjacent to the Kehoe House and the Owens Thomas House.

ORLEANS SQUARE With a beautiful fountain that is second only to the one at Forsyth Park, Orleans Square is one of the most soughtafter. It is convenient to the Savannah Convention Center’s Ballroom and the historic Harper Fowlkes House.

5. If your event has over 150 guests, be sure to have the required insurance coverage.

Originally built in 1895 as a family dwelling, The Whitman was turned into apartments in the 1950s, completely destroying the building’s historic integrity. When owner Steve Buckner and General Manager Bob Vardzel got a hold of the building and its plans, they were tasked with putting it back together.

“The restoration took one year, but it was such a fun experience,” says Vardzel. “We were given the original blueprints from the Historical Foundation and we literally rolled them out and planned everything back the way it was. With some modern touches of course.”

Those modern touches included a state-of-the-art chef’s kitchen, luxurious bathrooms and other modern conveniences you’d expect out of a 5-star resort. The charm of the Whitman, of course, isn’t in those modern conveniences; it comes from the sleeping porches on the left side of the house overlooking Forsyth Park.

The millwork, which was recreated from the original plans, oozes history.

Even touches as trivial as door hinges were painstakingly recreated to mimic the Victorian era.

While the ladies are getting ready on the second floor, the men can enjoy the attic-turned-game room upstairs. Equipped with surround sound, a full bar and a vintage pool table that has been in the owner’s family for over 100 years, this room is the bachelor’s dream. Even the couches function as crash pads, as each cushion is the size of a twin mattress. There’s even a full bathroom up there, perfect for primping the groomsmen.

“This is what you get when you give two guys too much time and too much money,” laughed Vardzel.

You can tell Buckner and Vardzel got a little crazy with the space. For the kids at heart, there’s a secret room hidden behind a hinged bookcase. Unless you know which button to press, you’d never know this little hideaway exists.

Inside is a small space, but it holds a large bed tucked under a window that gives just enough light to the little room. It’s the perfect little escape for a couple to get away from the rest of the wedding crowd after all the celebrating is over.

When you book your wedding at The Whitman, the beautiful Victorian becomes your “wedding headquarters.”

PROTESTANT There are no universal requirements for getting married in a Protestant church, so be sure to check with your officiant when booking your date. While it’s not a requirement, many churches recommend pre-wedding counseling to make sure the couple is on the same page.

PRE-MARITAL COUNSELING Whether you’re faith-based or not, premarital counseling is something you should seriously consider. According to Psychology Today, couples who have premarital counseling have a lower divorce rate than other couples. When you think of the many reasons for divorce (money problems, adultery, differences in raising children, etc), the smartest thing couples can do is seek counseling before saying “I do.” Your therapist, pastor, priest or rabbi will work through these common issues with you before getting hitched, saving you from a lot of problems down the road.
