hough he confessed his knees would hamper his efficiency, Samuel J. Bonanno again would serve his country if it were to call upon him. The 88-year-old native of the 1300 block of South Warnock Street sees nothing extraordinary about his attitude, deeming it a byproduct of his allegiance to the U.S. Marine Corps’ motto “Semper Fi,” always faithful. With the same extreme pride that helped him to defend his land during two wars, Bonanno beamed in November 2010 when his former employer acknowledged him as the oldest living Italian-American Marine. “Personnel researched matters and determined I was the one,” the Huntingdon

hough sunlight decided to take off Tuesday, lovers of leisure still found plenty of revelry to brighten their New Year’s Day festivities. Thanks to vivid and well-received performances from thousands of costumed helpers spread out over five disciplines, attendees of the 113th annual Mummers Parade warmly welcomed 2013, crowding South Broad Street, John F. Kennedy Boulevard and the Pennsylvania Convention Center to witness the pomp and pageantry that unite generations and doll out camaraderie. “We’ve come for maybe the last 10 years,” Shel Cain said of himself and wife Peggy at Broad Street and Washington Avenue, where the Comic Division launched the celebration. Word on the Street

What do you believe was 2012’s biggest news story? “The school district’s decision to recommend grade reorganizations and closings stands out for me. The plan will likely have schools at each other’s throats to stay alive. Matthew Subits, 16th and Porter streets

“This seemed like a year of tragedy, with Hurricane Sandy and the Colorado movie shooting, but the massacre at Sandy Hook [Elementary School] in Connecticut was just so devastating. Michelle DeFelice, 10th and Shunk streets

“The fight to keep us from going off the fiscal cliff really picked up at the end of the year, so because of the possible repercussions, like increased taxes, I’m going with that. Joe Torrance, Broad and McKean streets

“I’ll say the Penn State [University] child molestation scandal involving [former football assistant] Jerry Sandusky. It offended a lot of people, had others feeling torn over supporting the school and was so controversial. Violet Anderson, Broad and Jackson streets Interviews by Joseph Myers Photos by Greg Bezanis Comment at southphillyreview.com/opinion/word-on-the-street. A sweeping resolution To the Editor: Happy New Year, South Philly. I hate to start the new year on a sour note, but I’ve held it in as long as I can. Does anyone in South Philly know what a broom looks like? I’m not talking about the three or four people who actually know how to use a broom, I’m talking to the other few thousand homeowners and renters who do not. How can anyone be proud to call South Philly home? I am embarrassed beyond belief to bring any guests to my home because they have to travel through some of the filthiest streets I have ever seen in my life to get to my block. You want to have a block party? You want to have a barbecue? You want to have a New Year’s party? Great, but don’t you think you should clean up afterward? Want to shoot fireworks? I love ‘em! Clean up afterward. And the garbage does not go down the sewer. It goes in the appropriate trash receptacles. If the City wants to cure its financial crisis, all it has to start doing is giving tickets. I, myself, am a dog owner and always pick up after my dog. To all the lazy owners who do not, you make it very bad for us responsible pet owners, and I don’t care to step in your dog’s waste. Pick it up or let your dog crap in your living room so only you have to deal with it. Cleaning up after your pet is part of pet ownership. If you can’t handle it, don’t have a pet. How do you teach your children self-respect without teaching them to respect where they live? They learn by example and I see all the parents trashing the neighborhood, so I can’t place the blame on the kids. Respect your neighborhood, be an active part of your community and watch the crime go down. Yes, I contribute to my local civic organization, but a few people can’t possibly keep up with all this trash. Everyone has to pitch in. South Philly has so much to offer. I really want to be proud to live here, and the buy in is only a 99-cent broom. Please can we all pitch in and clean up, not once or twice, but all the time. I have photos of brooms for those of you who do not know what to look for in the store.

Have a happy, healthy and hopefully cleaner new year. Mary John South Philadelphia

A cry and a prayer To the Editor: How do I put into words the way I feel? I pray that God will help the families somehow. Dear God, I just can’t fnd the words. One thing I do know is we have a heaven above with 20 new angels to look down on us. So they know, we will never get to know them. I don’t know the families, but I will pray every night for them and the new angels above. God, we will need all of the help we can get. The world has gone crazy. Will the killing of babies and kids ever stop? We can’t go to a movie, take a walk or let our kids play outside. Now, it’s hard to send them to school. God, please, we need angels down here. This is the time of year that we should pray and be happy, not sad. Joe Ricci South Philadelphia Comment on these letters or topics at southphillyreview.com/opinion/letters.

SUSPENDED ANIMATION: Though most basketball fans love a thrilling dunk, those seeking a gravity gratuity at the original George W. Childs School’s yard, 1541 S. 17th St., must go elsewhere if prolonging an aerial adventure appeals to them. The Newbold location’s rim likely will welcome fewer shots, with indoor facilities sure to beneďŹ t from winter’s onslaught. SPR

ith his child by his side, a West Passyunk man was shot multiple times, including a few to his head that caused serious brain damage, in a Girard Estate parking lot two days before Christmas. He succumbed to his injuries Sunday. Louis Porter, 45, of the 1900 block of South Bonsall Street, parked his black 2001 Cadillac DTS in the parking lot at Walgreens, 2310 Oregon Ave., at 8:16 p.m. Dec. 23, multiple police sources said. As he and his 5-year-old son walked from the car, an unknown man pulled up in a dark gray Ford sedan, exited the driver’s side, pulled out a gun and started shooting. The target backed away and tried to retreat into his auto, but the gunman kept shooting, firing a total of 17 shots, before backing out of the parking lot in his vehicle and heading in an unknown direction. While the child was unharmed, his father received a gunshot wound to his left wrist, two to his left arm and several more to his head, which caused severe brain injuries, police said. A medic transported him to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he remained in critical condition for a week. He was pronounced dead at 11:15 a.m. Sunday. Police recovered ballistic evidence, as well as the victim’s car and cell phone at the scene, authorities said. The motive was unknown at press time. The gunman was described as black, 5-foot-10 to 6-foot-2, 220 pounds and wearing a black jacket, gray hoodie and dark-colored jeans. It is believed there was another man in the passenger’s seat of the offender’s auto, but a detailed description of him was not available at press time. The vehicle was described as a dark gray Ford sedan, possibly a Taurus or Fusion with a partial tag of FSH456. To report information, call Homicide Division at 215-686-3334, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Deadly end to 2012 A bullet to the head killed a Point Breeze man and left another man with the same infliction in critical condition Friday. Police responded at 1:59 a.m. for a person with a gun on the 1700 block of Titan Street where officers discovered two wounded men in a 2013 Kia, which was running upon their arrival, Officer Christine O’Brien of Police Public Affairs said. Rahsul Busbee, aka Rahsul Meadows, was found in the driver’s seat. The 22-year-old from the 1200 block of South 21st Street was pronounced dead at the scene 13 minutes later while his 23-year-old passenger was transported to HUP in critical condition. Police did not disclose a suspect or motive by press time. To report information, call Homicide Division at 215-686-3334, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Young gun Shots rang out in West Passyunk when a teen chased a peer with gunfire Friday. Police responded to gunshots on the 2000 block of South Hemberger Street at 3:55 p.m., Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. As a teen fired toward another adolescent, one of his bullets entered a 2005 blue Chrysler minivan’s rear window and exited its front windshield, missing its 51-year-old male and 49-year-old female passenger, while another bullet struck a maroon Pontiac Montana minivan’s rear driver’s side tallight. The shooter’s target fled south on Hemberger while the gunman, who was described as black with a medium complexion, age 15 to 16, thin and wearing a brown jacket, headed the opposite direction on Hemberger, Tolliver said. Police recovered ballistics evidence at the scene, Tolliver said. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

The worker provided money from the top register and then the robber helped himself to more cash from the bottom register, totaling $2,289. He then asked if there was a safe, Tolliver said. A West Passyunk spat left a man stabbed and his girlfriend in jail on Christmas Eve. A 32-year-old and his girlfriend, Delores Taylor, 48, of the 2200 block of South Beechwood Street, were arguing inside their second-floor apartment when she allegedly stabbed him in his left side at 8:45 p.m., Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The wounded man was transported to HUP in stable condition for treatment, Tolliver said. Officers returned to the location of the crime and knocked on the door. While no one answered, they heard movement and screaming inside, Tolliver said. Upon entering, they spotted Taylor, who allegedly admitted she had committed the crime. Police recovered the knife at the scene, Tolliver said. Taylor was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and possession of an instrument of crime, according to court records. She posted 10 percent of her $25,000 bail Dec. 26.

BONANNO continued from page 1 Valley resident said last month of the ceremony at Northeast Philly’s Naval Inventory Control Point, which helped the Marine Corps to celebrate its 235th anniversary. “I hadn’t given much thought to my longevity, but I appreciate the recognition.” Bonanno found himself engaging in role reversal for the event, replacing praising the armed forces branch for its work in shaping his life with accepting its gratitude for his commitment to its causes. Sixty-one years after completing his tenure with the body, he remains an advocate of personal sacrifice for his nation’s gain. “If I could go back in time, I would still honor our flag,” the octogenarian said. “Even today, morale is missing among our soldiers. Our military is troubled.” The collective defenders faced similar woes in 1942, having entered World War II the year before because of Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. One month before his 18th birthday, Bonanno, having grown too accustomed to reading accounts of the conflict, chose to see if he could speed it along, leaving Southeast Catholic High School, formerly Seventh and Christian streets, now Ss. Neumann-Goretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St. His superiors attached him to the 3rd Marine Division, 12th Regiment, 2nd Battalion Artillery Detachment following boot camp in South Carolina, and he eventually became a participant in the nearly four-year-long Asia-Pacific portion of the struggle. He made amphibious landings on the islands of Bougainville and Guadalcanal, Guam and Japan, the last as part of the bloody Battle of Iwo Jima. “I had no fear when wearing my uniform,” Bonanno, who received furlough in May ’45, four months before the war’s conclusion, said. “I’d have given my life for my country and still would give it today.” The patriotic figure returned to duty five years later during the Korean War’s early stages. Instead of venturing overseas again, he served as a military police officer in North Carolina, with his discharge as a corporal occurring in ’52. For his valor, he received The American Theater, Korean Service, National Defense, Presidential Unit Commendation and World War II

Victory medals, along with The Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with four battle stars and the Navy Unit Commendation with one star. “What a critical stage in history that was,” Bonanno, whom Maj. Gen. Anthony C. Zinni promoted to the rank of sergeant at a ’96 Union League ceremony, said of his military career. “I had such civic pride and wanted only to back up my belief that this is the best country in the world.” JUST AS HE had followed his heart in deciding to enlist, the Passyunk Square na-

tive sought to secure safety as an officer with the Pennsylvania Highway Patrol, beginning an eight-year stint soon after his discharge. Living with wife Rose on the 3100 block of South 13th Street, Bonanno, eager for education, used the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act, commonly called the G.I. Bill, to enhance his standing. He secured a dayshift to take evening classes at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating from the Ivy League institution with a criminal justice degree in ’59. “I wanted to establish myself as a provider and to use as much of whatever tal-

ent I had,” Bonanno said of returning to school. “I knew what I had in my heart and wanted to see what I had in my head.” He aligned himself with the Atlantic Richfield Co. in ’60, gaining ownership of two auto repair shops. The automotive field occupied Bonanno, who left South Philly for Fox Chase before settling in Huntingdon Valley, for 24 years, with the then-60-year-old securing a claims supervisor position with a Center City law firm in ’84. “It’s always given me a thrill to be productive, no matter my age,” he said. “Being active always beats the alternative.” He remained with the firm until 2003, retiring to become the caretaker for his bride, who passed the next year. Rather than let sadness envelop him, Bonanno engrossed himself in building his friendships, especially his unions with buddies in the Northeast Philly-based Lombardi/ Alessandroni/Michelangelo Lodge of the Sons of Italy, for whom he has served numerous duties, including several terms as its president. “I’ve been involved with the Sons of Italy for almost 60 years,” the proud Sicilian said. “To help communities, I’ve also been with the American Legion for the same amount of time.” The latter, a veterans organization only five years older than Bonanno, has led him to advance its commitment to mentoring youths and to sponsoring communal programs. He has used his involvement to complement what he considers a rich life, an existence that gained a great ally five years ago when he wed a second time. “Gilda has been great to me,” he said of his partner, whom he met through her friendship with his first wife. “I feel even more blessed and vivacious because of her.” He has traveled a few times to spend time with his two Florida-based stepchildren and loves what he can share with his family, especially recollections of his time abroad and the acknowledgment of his successors’ admiration for his 88 years. “I really didn’t do much aside from aging, but any honor from the Marine Corps is one any man or woman should cherish,” he said. Like his fellow college graduates who always have to address the “What’s next?” inquiry, Bonanno is pondering his ensuing act. Only his knees give him grief, as he seeks to maintain mental and physical acuity. Though his old boss has thousands of members to follow his legacy, he gladly would join them in combat. “I’m still active as a person,” he said, “so why not think of myself that way as a Marine?” SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. MUMMERS continued from page 1 “The atmosphere always makes for a great way to spend the holiday.” In extending their relationship with the parade, which originated in 1901, the residents of Seventh Street and Washington Avenue also introduced their granddaughter Marielle to the event. The 20-monthold became a frequent recipient of affection, as garbed entertainers adorned her with necklaces and offered her waves. “Today’s word is ‘costume,’” Cain said of aiding the toddler’s ability to distinguish between reality and imagination. The Bella Vista dweller and the other excited onlookers also observed the outfits and routines of the Wench Brigades, Fancies, String Bands and Fancy Brigades, with Oregon, Passyunk and Washington avenues and Ritner and Dickinson streets serving as starting points and performance areas. “I love the string bands the most,” he said of the 17 entrants. “They’re so outstanding, as is everyone else, that I don’t know how people ever judge them. I know I couldn’t.” HAWTHORNE’S CONCHITA CARVALHO has come to adore every aspect of the annual occasion. A native of Brazil, she attended her first parade as a visitor in 2009 and made Tuesday’s affair her initial one as a South Philadelphian. “I went to the Mummers Mass to pray

for a great day, and we got one,” the resident of the 1200 block of Christian Street said of the New Year’s Eve gathering at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 2319 S. Third St. “I can’t wait to find out who the winners will be so we can give them even more cheers on Two Street.” The aforementioned spot refers to a multi-block party where participants and spectators bond and anticipate both a prosperous year and many fruitful future forays up Broad Street. Before the post-parade tradition prolonged the joy deep into the night, the gregarious acts wowed their supporters with a slew of themes, many touching on homages to the past and a few tackling contemporary issues, such as the sluggish American economy and the often feared Mayan prophecy on the future of the world. “It’s been quite a varied year and certainly one I look forward to recounting long after the final prize is given and the last pieces of confetti and silly string are picked up,” Mitchell Gordon, of the 600 block of McKean Street, said. “I don’t know anybody who likes starting a new year with a sad day or in a foul mood. The Mummers, for so many people and even more potential folks, are a great remedy for all our cares. Let’s hope happy days are here again.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/features.

Action plan A Seventh-and-Ritner-streets teen is the first local to receive protection under the president’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. By Jess Fuerst Review Contributor

K

arla Rojas crossed the Mexican-American border nearly 12 years ago with her parents. The trip took them a week. “It was really hard and complicated. There are a lot of cases just like mine out there. They come because they are running away from poverty,” the 18-year-old said. “Once we hit the desert, some people don’t make it.” She was one of the lucky ones who made the trek and ended up settling at Seventh and Ritner streets. Though she no longer faces some of the hardships she tackled in Mexico City, she’s found there is a new set of struggles in America. “People ask you how come you have a Mexican ID? How come you used this to get in this country. It’s kind of uncomfortable. My family, my parents, still go through the same thing,” she said. Rojas, however, now has a Social Security card that allows her to be legally employed in the States. She was granted this temporary protection this fall after the laborious process of applying to President Barack Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, making her the first in the area to be granted the reprieve. “If I could pick one thing [to change immediStaff photo by Greg Bezanis

Lifestyles ately], it’d be immigration reform for everybody,” she said. “It’s not fair that I have citizenship, well, not even citizenship, just a privilege to work, and the rest of my community doesn’t.” Under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the program, which launched in June, grants illegal immigrants a Social Security number for a two-year period if they meet certain requirements, which include entering the U.S. prior to age 16, residing here for at least five years and either being currently enrolled in school or having completed high school. Rojas’ family and friends do not meet many of the requirements. “Many people think without a Social Security number you have no rights, but we have many rights,” Rojas said. The dissemination of this information is one of Rojas’ primary missions, something she completes in conjunction with Juntos, 2029 S. Eighth St., a Latino immigrant community organization, which means “together” in Spansih. “I’m a cofounder of Fuerza, we founded it a year ago,” she said of the Juntos subgroup, meaning “strength” in her native language. “Basically, what we do is we fight for people to go to college. A lot of students don’t know a way to go to college. It’s a big problem in the Latino community.”

Speaking from experience, Rojas helps to inform South Philadelphians about ways to enroll in higher education, along with other rights they may not be aware, but to which they are entitled. Rojas is familiar with the plight of her fellow community members, almost having left high school herself, which would have made further education impossible. “I started it because I was in a situation my junior year. [My friends] go to school and they think they have to be perfect. I learned my junior year, as [it] is in most cases, I want to drive and I want to have a job and we think, ‘OK, we can’t because we don’t have a Social Security number,’” Rojas, who attended the Academy at Palumbo, 1100 Catharine St., said. “It made me start Fuerza, that struggle where people usually tell us we can’t do anything with our lives and we might as well give up.” Luckily, Rojas took matters into her own hands and has since been covered by government effort and enrolled in the Community College of Philadelphia for a twoyear degree as an ultrasound technician. “It was easier for me to find out info [about applying for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals]. It was a long process with a lot of requirements. I fit all the requirements so I was able to apply,” Rojas said. “Some of my friends had been here

ESCAPING POVERTY, THE Rojas family made the long journey and found a new home in the Latino community in South Philly. Among the sacrifices they made for a new chance was leaving behind family members. “I still have my grandpa in Mexico. I haven’t seen any of my family in almost 12 years,” she said. “Hopefully, one day, I’ll see him, but people tell me I should go back and cross the legal way. But how can we come here the legal way when they aren’t letting us?” The life they have set up in America is still plagued with struggles, and upon her original arrival at age 7, Rojas said she wasn’t ready to accept her fate. “My dad, he’s in the adult Juntos and

works with the adults. He was talking about some things I didn’t want to hear,” she said. “I didn’t want to see my situation — what it was really about, what we have to go through. He showed me the reality. When I saw [the truth], I saw how much my community is in pain just to get by each day.” Despite the hardships Rojas is impressed with the resilience she sees in her community. “My Latino community, even though they have problems, at the end of the day we’re sticking together, helping each other out,” Rojas said. “They’re not cheap with their money. They’ll give a dollar or 20, 15 dollars. When they know that someone doesn’t have enough money, they’ll give what they can.” Now, Rojas, who said her dream job would be working as an immigration lawyer, is focused on spreading the word, and motivating her fellow community members to know their rights and take action. “I had a hard life in Mexico. Mostly families come to give their child a better life, money,” she said. “I like it here. I can help my community, let them know they have rights and why should they be put down? There’s no need to be scared. I learned how not to be scared.” SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/lifestyles.

weapons that Congress allowed to expire in 2004. We must also do a better job this time around in defining assault weapons, something we didn’t do under the previous ban. Once we reinstitute the assaultweapons ban, there is the problem of the estimated more than two million assault weapons already out there. In order for the ban to mean anything, someone must get those weapons off of the street. In 1996, Australia faced a similar problem. In addition to imposing severe restrictions on gun ownership, the government imposed an 1 percent tax levy to raise $500 million in order to buy back about 600,000 guns. Since we have about three times the number of assault weapons in circulation, any buyback program would cost about three times as much. Would the public support a federal buyback program that would mean more taxes? And even if we did, would a Republican-controlled Congress that refuses even to impose a modest increase in tax rates on the wealthiest among us pass such a measure? We shouldn’t kid ourselves; the political hurdle is formidable. One suggestion on which both sides of the debate seem to agree is the negative effect of violent video games and movies. But what most don’t realize is that video games are rated much the same way as movies. The Entertainment Software Ratings Board issues ratings for video games that have as little effect as movie ratings. In theory, ratings are a good idea, but in reality, they are ignored for the most part. There is no good way to enforce the ratings system without the cooperation of parents. Sad to say that many of the same parents that complain about their children being exposed to violent entertainment are the same ones who give in to their demands for popular video games and films. Government restrictions of these games’ and films’ content run into constitutionally protected free speech. By outlining the difficulty of the problems we face in preventing another Sandy Hook, it is not my purpose that we throw up our hands and do nothing. But underestimating the difficulties ahead is a sure way to court failure again. It is a sure way to ensure that we will be wringing our hands in horror at the next Sandy Hook-type tragedy. We will have to pull together as a nation. Previous opponents of gun control will have to understand that banning assault weapons and tightening requirements at gun shows will not be a first step toward outlawing legitimate hunting or home-protection interests. Gun-control advocates will have to understand the legitimate interests of gun ownership, as America is a land of diverse cultures. Both sides must respect each other in order to get these killing machines off of our streets. There is no better time to start than now. SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/opinion/ cardella.

Django (Jamie Foxx) strives to free his wife from Mississippi plantation owner, Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio).

Chained to the screen By R. Kurt Osenlund Movie Reviewer

W

ith “Inglourious Basterds,” “Kill Bill,” and even “Death Proof” all featuring score-settling plots, one could justifiably be tired of Quentin Tarantino, whose “Django Unchained” is yet another hyper-stylized revenge fantasy. But, nevertheless, one simple fact remains: A year with a Tarantino flick is a good year for movies, as so few directors fill the screen with such a giddy love of the medium. “Django” takes a hot minute to get moving, but once it accelerates, you’re deep inside a familiar world of verbose, violent bliss, whose creator rarely fails to leave an indelible mark. Riffing on slavery in the same way “Basterds” skewered Nazi Germany, “Django” is a work of sensationalistic revisionist history, merged with homage to the spaghetti-western tradition from which it pulls its name. The film stars Jamie Foxx as the titular freed slave, and Christoph Waltz as the bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz, who helps to rescue Django’s wife (Kerry Washington) from brutal plantation owner Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio). As one would hope and expect, the movie’s wild pieces come together with great cohesion, all the while offering singularly gonzo social commentary (a bit about early Klansmen’s hoods seems bound for the quotable canon, while Candie’s speech about slave phrenology is draped with the filmmaker’s trademark brilliance). Lensed by Robert Richardson, “Django” is also home to some of the year’s best imagery, like a blood-stained cotton field made beautiful in all its picturesque symbolism. The film’s best asset may just be its bevy of great performances, which Tarantino has long excelled at coaching out of

his actors. With his effortless cool, Foxx proves perfect for the lead, and Washington’s fine work in few scenes caps off a banner year for the actress. But the showstealers are DiCaprio, who breathes fire as a grade-A villain, and Samuel L. Jackson, whose fascinating and riveting turn as Stephen, Candie’s Uncle-Tom-like confidant, is easily his best performance since working with Tarantino on “Pulp Fiction.” Literally darkened in his transformation as a complex, indoctrinated traitor, Jackson emerges the MVP of this mad treatise on race relations.

Tim Burton may have been off his game with the much-maligned “Dark Shadows,” but he found some sweet redemption this year with the animated “Frankenweenie,” an expansion of the director’s own 1984 short. Flecked with bits of everything from “Pet Sematary” to “Frankenstein,” the black-and-white, stop-motion feature is a small valentine to horror-movie tropes, all the while serving as a charming spin on the boy-and-his-dog tale. he debate rages. The only thing that we agree on is we don’t want any more Sandy Hook tragedies. Everyone has their own solution. We have heard them all before because we have seen these mass shootings before. Columbine melts into Virginia Tech into Sandy Hook and inevitably into some future American school. Our retention span is shockingly brief — about the time it takes to flick from one channel to the next with our remote control. Nothing seems quite as horrific as the massacre of innocent children, but alas, even this searing heartbreak will fade until the next tragedy strikes. We are easily distracted. It is one of the less admirable qualities of the human condition. Both sides in the debate make possible solutions sound amazingly simple. The first step we can and should take is the realization that there are no simple solutions. When 77 people can be slaughtered in a country like Norway, maybe the apocalypse has begun and we just haven’t noticed. Yet it is much too facile, as some suggest, by the Norway example to conclude that our problem in America is no worse than anywhere else. In Norway a mass shooting is once in a lifetime while here it is seemingly an annual ritual of horror with only the names changed. The National Rifle Association suggests we place trained, armed security guards in every school in America. The idea has been greeted with much derision. Opposition to the idea is that they are too expensive, not conducive to a learning environment or simply guns don’t belong in schools. I don’t often agree with the NRA. I find their “solutions” are mainly ways to distract us from imposing any bans or limitations on owning a weapon. But if we can tolerate armed security guards in other areas of our lives to protect us, I have no problem with doing so in schools where the commodity that we are protecting is so much more precious. We could even hire more police to serve the function. Of course, mass shootings don’t just occur in schools. They occur in any public place where crowds gather — movie theaters and shopping malls to name just two. And critics are correct that there are considerable costs involved. But they ignore the considerable costs involved in their own solutions. On the other side of the debate, most of the talk is about restoring the ban on assault rifles and other semi-automatic

imagine stopping the progression of Alzheimer’s I have friends and loved ones suffering from Alzheimer’s. But I can imagine… and hope for… a world without this terrible disease.

Maya Angelou author, poet, educator

You can help make a difference. A major brain imaging study led by the National Institutes of Health may help us learn how to stop the progression of Alzheimer’s. Please consider joining the study if you are between 55 and 90 and: • are in good general health with no memory problems, OR • are in good general health but have memory problems or concerns, OR • have a diagnosis of early Alzheimer’s disease.

hile many of your friends might avoid sweet temptations in order to move closer to the always popular New Year’s resolution of losing a few pounds, why not indulge with a warm slice of Carol McGinness’ Chocolate Chip Cake? The resident of the 2100 block of South Hancock Street even sprinkles some cinnamon and sugar on top instead of spreading icing all over, so maybe dieters will be enticed to try a small piece as well. SPR

INGREDIENTS: 1-1/2 cups of sugar 1 teaspoon of cinnamon 1/2 pound of butter 2 eggs 1 cup of sour cream 1 teaspoon of vanilla 2 cups of flour 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder 1 teaspoon of baking soda 1/4 cup of milk 1 16-ounce bag of chocolate chips

DIRECTIONS: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Combine 1/2 cup of the sugar and the cinnamon in a bowl and set aside. In a separate bowl, cream together the butter, remaining sugar and eggs. Add the sour cream and vanilla and blend together. Sift in the flour, baking powder and soda and mix. Stir in the milk and add the chocolate chips. Pour in a pan and bake for 45 minutes. After the cake cools, sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mix on top.

All’s fare Food hotspot

L

ast week, Zagat named East Passyunk the city’s top food neighborhood of the year. “From new openings to expansions to pub crawls to valet parking, the Avenue was a hotspot,” according to a Zagat blog posting. Noted additions to the avenue included Will BYOB, Noir, Belle Cakery, Fountain Porter, as well as expansions for Underdogs, Fond and Cantina. SPR

Colorectal cancer and precancerous polyps don’t always cause symptoms. So you can look healthy and feel fine and not know there may be a problem. ■ Screening helps find polyps so they can be removed before they turn into colorectal cancer. This is one cancer you can prevent! ■ Screening can also find colorectal cancer early, when treatment often leads to a cure. ■ If you’re 50 or older, make sure you really are the picture of health. Get screened for colorectal cancer.

Bifrost pale ale, heady with a peaty rich aroma; New Holland Cabin Fever brown ale and Great Lakes Christmas Ale. Our server advised we enjoy the beers from light to rich. We did not know happy hour was in full swing and when the bill arrived, the prices were cut in half. Dinner began with a beet salad ($9) and a barbecued duck flatbread ($13). These were beautifully presented and delicious. Cool roasted beet and perfectly ripened Bosc pear cubes added a bit of natural sweetness to a toss of tangy goat cheese, which surrounded a mound of spicy baby arugula. Duck has appeared on pub menus ever since Northern Liberties’ Standard Tap offered it 12 years ago. Trowbridge placed thin strips of succulent duck meat on the flatbread; added some sweet, red onion caramelized right on target, a homemade barbecue sauce that was in perfect balance of savory and sweet; and heated it to perfection. I’ve been disappointed with burgers lately. Devil’s Den prime burger ($9) was medium-rare, perfectly seared on the grill, big and juicy, nestled on a soft bun, topped with a generous dab of Gorgonzola and thick slab smoked bacon and came with a pile of piping hot, crisp french fries and dill pickles. Roast chicken ($16) was another winner. A whole skin on a boneless chicken breast was opened, slightly flattened, stuffed with intensely flavored minced chorizo, seasoned just right and rolled into a roulade. Restaurant Review:

Since 2008, Devil’s Den has provided Passyunk Square with pub fare, as well as a large selection of bottled and draft beer. S ta f f P h o t o b y G r e g B e z a n i s

This was an inspiring choice. The chicken retained its juiciness, redolent with the flavors and aromas of fresh herbs and spicy sausage. After it was roasted, Trowbridge finished it in a skillet, reducing the pan juices to the most marvelous, intensely flavored gravy Edward and I have tasted since Thanksgiving dinner. Steamed rice and sautéed spinach with a touch of cream were the side dishes of the evening. Don’t miss dessert at Devil’s Den. Our waiter, who took fine care of us, told us a woman who works at the restaurant during the day makes all of the desserts. A hefty slice of pecan pie ($5) baked on a flaky buttery crust and topped with real thick whipped cream was so outrageously = Very Good

t is often a good idea to pay another visit to a restaurant after a new chef takes the reins and creates a new menu. Edward and I did just that on a cold, windy evening just after Christmas. I reviewed Devil’s Den when it opened in 2008. Cousin Carl and I found the food to be desperately lacking on all levels. Enter chef Tom Trowbridge, who revamped the menu, creating tasty dishes with fresh ingredients. Trowbridge came from Moriarty’s Pub in Center City where his big juicy burgers were among my favorites. Devil’s Den in Passyunk Square is just what a neighborhood pub should be. Edward and I were immediately warmed up by the working fireplace in the front room where every seat was taken at high-top tables and the bar. We were lucky to snag the last available table in the adjoining room. I liked the decor, especially the exposed brick walls, comfortable tables and banquettes where places were set with linen napkins — a fine touch for a pub. The fireplace also provided warmth and coziness. The beer list is still huge and overwhelming. Edward and I decided to try two different flights. The East Coast flight ($8) consisted of New York’s Southampton Bière de Garde French Country Christmas Ale, which imparted a citrus flavor; Maryland’s Heavy Seas Winter Storm; and Pennsylvania’s Stoudt’s Revel Red hoppy amber ale, and The Brew Work’s Rude Elf’s Reserve Belgian dark ale. The Winter flight ($9) took off with The Bruery 5 Golden Rings, a golden ale from Belgium that I really liked; Elysian

inter is officially here and I am trying to find new ideas for our weekday dinners. I am tired of butternut squash, Brussels sprouts, Caesar salad, roasted root vegetables and beet, walnut and goat cheese salad. I am not one for New Year’s resolutions, but this year more leafy greens will be added to our diet. I’m fortunate that Edward loves all leafy greens, so over the next few weeks I am going to seek out recipes for kale, Tuscan kale, Swiss chard and escarole. The best way to do this is to pull out the cookbooks, settle in with a nice hot cup of tea and a few bookmarks. Cookbooks organized by season was a good way to start my recipe hunt. One of my favorites is Judith Huxley’s “Table for Eight: Recipes & Menus for Entertaining with the Seasons.” I opened the January chapter and discovered an Avocado, Artichoke and Mushroom Salad, a fitting first course. I also found an easy recipe for Chocolate Pots de Crëme, a French version of chocolate pudding that is a favorite comfort desserts from my childhood. On Wednesdays, I enjoy reading Melissa Clark’s “A Good Appetite” column in The New York Times. Her recipes are always intriguing, sometimes unusual, but always easy to follow. Since I purchased a bunch of Tuscan kale, I was lucky to discover a recipe from the January chapter in her book “Cook This Now.” The chicken thigh recipe is from Clark’s “In the Kitchen with a Good Appetite.”

In Loving Memory Of Our Dear Mother

Ida (Edith) Boffa 3-26-10 • 12-29-97

On Dec. 3rd 2012 we lost a husband, brother, uncle, friend, neighbor and companion. Joe was all of these things and so much more, he will forever be in our hearts and minds. Our bench on 16th St. will never be the same without him and his beloved dogs Hoppy & Lily sitting there smiling and greeting everyone as they passed. We will always remember the happy times and the sad ones but, someone told us to “Live for him” and we are trying our best to live through one of the worst times of our lives.

We will be eternally grateful to all of you. A special thanks to the nurses and staff at Penna. Hospital 6th floor Schiedt bldg. and also the nurses and staff at Methodist Hosp. Hospice unit, for all the love and care you gave Joe. God Bless all of you, Love, Joyce and Family

Talking Turkey A South of South soccer star could spend part of this summer in Eurasia courtesy of a recent recognition. By Joseph Myers R e v i e w S ta f f W r i t e r

hough he also enjoyed and excelled at baseball and basketball as a boy, Darius Madison selected soccer as his athletic vocation, believing the game could feed his wanderlust. The resident of 18th and Catharine streets has received ample proof of his position over the last few years and will add more testimony when he and the U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team travel to Mexico for next month’s Confederation of North Central American and Caribbean Association Football Championship. If they reach the semifinals, they will qualify for June’s FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey. “I had not even known I was up for consideration,” the 18-year-old said last week at Marian Anderson Recreation Center, 744 S. 17th St. “I’m always eager for bigger responsibilities, so I feel very honored.” posure to The teenager gained great exposure erted his preferred sport and the deserted diversions through the South of South facility, spending sixx years as an Anderson Monarch. He forged fascination with soccer during his freshman year at Wyndmoor’s La Salle College High School and has booted his way to prominence since, with December’s designation sure to further his fire. Two weeks after head coach Tab ther acRamos chose him and 23 other nt their land, complished players to represent Madison flew to Florida for training camp. He is spending his holiday break from the University of Virginia engaging in more preparations and anticipates putting his Sunshine State lessons to use against his unit’s Group A foes, Costa Rica and Haiti. “From my Florida trip, I learned my focus has to be even higher, along with my composure,” the forward said. “The competition figures to be tough, so only my best is going to help us to get beyond Mexico and then to Turkey.” To book time in the Eurasian country, Madison and his mates must finish first or second in their group and score a quarterfinal triumph. If they qualify for the World Cup, they will look to overcome a lackluster history, as their predecessors’ best result came when the 1989 athletes finished fourth in Saudi Arabia. “I’m hoping we can break through,” he said, acknowledging having five Major League Soccer pros should benefit his bunch. “Gaining experience will be great no matter what, but winning is certainly a mission.”

MADISON HAS MADE motivating his fellow competitors a requirement since his days at Marian Anderson. He met

coach Steve Bandura through his older brother Charles and donned his first uniform at age 5. As the Monarchs compete in baseball, basketball and soccer, he welcomed opportunities to acquire tutelage in determination and sportsmanship. When soccer claimed sovereignty over his athletic iden-

tity, he sought greater challenges, developing an infatuation with facing the best opponents. He lent his talent to Northeast Philly’s Penn Academy Strikers after parting with the Monarchs, progressing to the Philadelphia Soccer Club. Time there helped him to win a spot at the U.S. Soccer Residency Program in Bradenton, Fla., and he earned more kudos for his commitment when joining the Philadelphia Union Reserves at 15, all while helping his secondary school to remain a Catholic League force. “I’ve never shied away from pressure or obstacles,” Madison said. “In fact, I like for my teams to be roadblocks for everybody else.” His Explorers earned dominion over their parochial foes in his senior year by winning the league crown. In the 2011 final, Madison netted both goals in a 2-1 victory over Father Judge, including an overtime score that sent him charging around the field in ecstasy. That title and the District 12 Class AAA championship intensified colleges’ outreach to Madison, whose achievements that year also include competing in the High School All-American Soccer Game in Birmingham, Ala., and the Trofeo Scopigno Tournament in Rieti, Italy, for which he won the Golden Boot Award as the leading scorer. Deeming it “a phenomenal school,” he chose Virginia last February, hoping to contribute to annals that include 15 Atlantic Coast Conference titles and six national championships. He lost four games to an ankle injury but provided an offensive spark for the Cavaliers in 17 contests, with 15 starts. He attempted 33 shots, his squad’s third-highest mark while his 14 shots on goal ranked second. He registered two goals, including an overtime score at North Carolina State in November. Though his efforts landed him an All-ACC Freshman Team spot, the budding perfectionist considered his first year a rough one. “There were the typical adjustments anyone has to make when something new comes along,” the 5-foot-8 presence, whose team made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, said, “and I feel I handled myself well. I just wish I had scored a few more times.” Madison prides himself on his speed and ability to attack, with his yearning to be a better finisher topping what he feels needs improvement. He believes this year also could prove prodigious scholastically, as he likely will go from being undecided to choosing psychology as his major. Though he desires distinction in Mexico and time in Turkey, he will have a big opportunity for redemption if the national team fails. Chester’s PPL Park, where he played for the Union, will host this year’s national championships, and he would love for the Cavaliers to enter seventh heaven there. “It would be great to be close to home,” Madison said. “How great would it be to win so close to where I learned to play?” SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@southphillyreview. com or ext. 124.
